Wow, what a great story teller! My dad ferried an Aero Commander gear down from Arizona to San Antonio in the 60s. An engine quit over Mexico, low over mountains & prop wouldn't feather. One engine, gear down & windmilling prop means he's descending fast. Fooling with controls & searching for _any_ landing spot (were none) the other engine died. Dad decided to jump as he was wearing a parachute required on ferries. The door wouldn't open! Apparent safety feature so nobody walks into a spinning prop. Back in cockpit, looking for place to land, messing with controls he hit a primer & an engine roared to life for a few seconds & died again. He pushed the other primer & engine did the same. He flew the rest of the way to San Antonio _pushing primers,_ one at a time as they were further apart than he could stretch two fingers, manipulating a few seconds of engine power on each one to (barely) climb & maintain level flight.

I trained a guy to replace me when I was due to be promoted at Checker Auto, in the early 80’s. I taught him everything I knew including how we kept the deposit secure. Unfortunately we had to take it to the Yellow Front store at the other end of the shopping center as we were both in the same company and they only wanted to pay for one armored truck to transfer the cash. It’s a miracle we weren’t robbed walking back and forth with the deposit and bag full of change for the registers. Anyway this trainee decided it would be a good idea to pull money from the deposit somewhere between the two stores. When the company found out how much was missing they hired a private investigator and when he came up blank we all had to go in for a lie detector test. So there went my promotion, yet neither myself, the store manager or the PI they hired figured out how he was doing it. Training somebody to replace me? I don’t like to do that anymore!

When you buy your flys. You get what you pay for. When you produce your own. It gives you choices. Hook type, gauge, size. Colours, types of materials, do you want to add or omit a wing, tag, tail, change the profile, slimmer, more buggy, if dry, change hackle type, standard, parachute, paradun. Stage of life. Emerger, crippled, about to take off, egg layer, spent. Most importantly the moment the fish takes your fly the pride and achievement. As you progress you start producing for friends, club, teammates, ect. With life things change how long before you can no longer fish. You can still spend time behind the vice. Being 64 with health issues how long before it happens?
