    I use avocado oil when coking in cast iron. If something like steak, bacon, or burgers are cooked I will scrape the pan with a metal spatula just after removing the meat from the pan. This is to break it all lose for easy clean up and is unusually good enough.
    When things do remain stuck to the pan after it cools off and scrubbing it in the sink will not get it off, then I will boil some water in the pan and scrape it all off (With a metal spatula) while the water is boiling in the pan. If there are still some stubborn pieces, which is rare, I will use a tough green scrubbing pad.
    After the pan finally scrubs clean in the sink I put the pan on the stove and dry it with heat. After all the water evaporates I put avocado oil on it and spread it around the pan.
    This always gets things off that will not scrub off in the sink.
    I use cast iron every day along with stainless pots. No nonstick coated pans or pots. I never have an issue with things sticking to my cast iron, even while cooking.

    I've only been using cast iron for a couple years, and love it. Maybe it's just my lack of knowledge, but it seems to me your process is complicated. After cooking steak, or anything that leaves a crust like that, I just heat the pan, move it to the sink (with hot water), and use a cheap plastic scraper to remove the crust, followed by a good scrub brush. Cleaning takes about 30 seconds, before heating again to dry and season.

    Metal ball, heat and lard. This is my way of doing it.1.Wash asap, with metal ball easy as. 2. Soak it with hot water if burned. for hard case, add hot water boiling the skillet for couple of minutes then leave it cool down overnight. 3. After wash it, dry out the skillet in medium heat for couple of minutes till burning fingers when touch it. 4. Remove it from heat and start seasoning. From last 15 years, i found this method quick and easy. My skillet remaining nonstick still in excellent condition.

    • @MrCastIron
      @MrCastIron  Год назад

      Great questions, Cathy! Baking soda is not bad. As far as the sticky cast iron, you might want to wash it really good with hot soapy water and then rinse and dry it completely. I see confusion and concerns in the comments: in my experience cast iron is a lot more robust and resistant than many think. They make engine blocks from the stuff. Cast iron cooking is shrouded in myths and tales passed down through the ages. In short: overheating is bad, unevenly heating and thermal shock are about the only things that can really hurt it…and rust. Rust is the primary reason for the seasoning. The surface becoming nonstick-ish is a side effect.
    The seasoning is just a coating. It’s replaceable and does need to be maintained. The longer it builds the better it gets.
    There’s a plethora of ways that work: find what works for you and roll with it. 💪♥️🙏

      If you're at a campfire, using heat is the way to go. If you're working at an inside kitchen, unless you have a real good exhaust hood on your range, you will probably set off a fire alarm. Anyway, I have always found it takes about 30 seconds or so if you clean your cast iron immediately after you use it. If you let the crud get cold on it, then you have to use extreme heat or a lot of time.

      What I do is heat up my cast-iron skillet so that it’s hot, and take it to the sink and add hot water, and the steam will release everything from the skillet, and you can scrape it with a plastic spatula or a Lodge Scraper, rinse, and dry it with a paper towel. Then put it on the stove to completely dry the skillet, then wipe it with a thin layer of oil and let it cool!

    Seasoning your cast iron skillet with several layers is not for the non-stick effect. It is to protect your skillet from rust. You will not get the quality like Teflon coating. If you really want the non-stick effect, just properly care for the iron coating of your cast iron skillet. It is easier than you think. Just wash your skillet or remove the thick layer of greasy carbon with an electric drill and a wire brush. Or you can use any other method you like. Then treat it with white vinegar to remove rust if it has appeared. After that, wipe the skillet well with a dry cloth or paper towel. Do not dry your skillet on the stove or in the oven after white vinegar. There is one last step left. Just grease your skillet with a thin layer of vegetable oil. And that's it. Your skillet is ready to cook.

      It depends on how bad it is. If not too bad, use hot soapy water using a mild detergent like Dawn dish soap. If it is extremely bad and I don’t have access to a lye tank, I would use Easy-Off Heavy Duty oven cleaner with the yellow cap because it contains lye. Lye will strip the seasoning off, so if you do this method, you will have to reseason it. I hope this helps answer your question. Thanks for the great video. Salt will draw out water from anything it touches. Think about curing bacon, the salt takes ll the moisture out of it. Salt is also an anti-bacterial so you are also killing off bacteria. Tiny amounts of salt will be trapped in the microscopic pits in the surface of the cast iron that will definitely help to keep the pan germ free. All in all, using salt to clean cast iron is a brilliant idea.

      @annaburns5382 you may have a fairly new skillet. Mine is 65 years old. While it is still hot, I rinse it out clean. Nothing sticks. Just a thought, Salt acts as an abrasive, like sand paper. You may be damaging your seasoning. Try to season your skillet again. Use crisco. Coat liberally. Turn skillet upside down. Stick in oven at 375 degrees. Bake for about 4 hours. Do not remove from oven, just turn it off. Let it cool down slowly. You may have to do this several times. Hope that works.

      I've found the same. If I heat up the pan to a little above boiling, and pour some hot water into it (usually from my kettle), it'll loosen up most of the baked on food pretty quickly. I can then scrape it (through the water) with a wooden spoon. Then I drain the water, and immediately wipe it with paper towels. (If you don't do this immediately, the loosened food will dry and get stuck on again!) After all that, I'll heat up the pan, add in some oil, then salt, then scrub it a bit. The salt takes care of the loosened remnants and nicely leaves behind the oil you want to protect your pan. Then you can heat it up again for a post-seasoning treatment..
