Don’t Do Sadness/Blue Wind from Spring Awakening
Empty Chairs at Empty Tables from Les Miserables
Doubt Comes In from Hadestown
It’s Quiet Uptown from Hamilton
I Am The One Reprise from Next to Normal
Afternoon from Alice By Heart
"Eurydice, dying now a second time, uttered no complaint against her husband. What was there to complain of, but that she had been loved?"
That quote makes me cry so hard and every time I hear doubt comes in I think about it
What song is this?
@@taronrose8896 Not a song, the original myth
@@taronrose8896 The quote is from Ovid's Metamorphoses.
ughhh eva's voice during "it's me" and "orpheus." kills me
I knew that Orpheus was going to turn, but holy crapola Anaïs was SO GOOD in setting up that suspense. She has Hermes saying at the start "Maybe it will turn out this time" so it gives you that false sense of security. And oh my GOSH doubt comes in is just *chefs kiss*
one of the things that’s so remarkable about doubt comes in is the way you hear the crowd audibly gasp because THEY WERE SO CLOSE
I’d like to add,
1. the second act of falsettos
2.edges of the world from fun home
3. Something’s missing from come from away
Doubt Comes In always gets me even though I know what’s gonna happen 😭 And It’s Quiet Uptown never fails to make me sad 😔
I’ve listened to doubt comes in a lot, so when I saw Hadestown in person, I was actually sadder during wait for me (reprise) because I knew what was coming
But also what I love about DCI is that during part of it, you also can’t see Eurydice, which I think helps you understand Orpheus
I'm still healing from Alice by Heart
Alice By Heart has been my favorite musical for forever. Molly Gordon and Colton Ryan give such an amazing performance that I couldn't imagine anyone else playing Alice and Alfred.
god this comment is so cheesy but that's genuinely how i feel.
I love Spring Awakening and all of these shows, but Alice By Heart is just incredible (and so heartbreaking)! The lyrics, the melodies, and the performances -- I'm crazy about the harmonies of Colton Ryan and Molly Gordon! Colton Ryan's voice is so incredibly beautiful!
couldn’t of said it better myself!
Spring Awakening is so utterly heartbreaking its insane
As soon as Michael in the bathroom started playing I started crying.
7:17
This gets me everytime!! The sadness in his Lins voice just makes me so emotional. "it's quiet uptown" is such a heartbreaking and beautiful number. I love it.
Yep. When he cries, I cry.
I agree. I've seen some amazing performances of people screaming/crying in grief, but his performance is of someone completely crushed and broken with grief.
For the Next to Normal clip, Dan’s not actually seeing Gabe, Gabe is just a physical representation of Dan’s grief. Gabe grabbing him and San finally saying his name represents Dan finally coming to terms with his grief, and yeah that song makes me sob too 😭
I disagree. Throughout the entire play, Dan NEVER looks directly at Gabe until this moment. Several times he walks right past him looking in the opposite direction, stubbornly refusing to see what Diana sees. In the I Am the One confrontation Aaron bounces all around Brian crowding his physical space, and still Brian keeps his gaze anywhere else. Only here when, as you said, he finally allows himself to feel his own grief does he look directly at him. I think in this moment he does "see" what Diana has seen all along, what his son could have been.
@@richardketterer7965 omg this is my new favorite interpretation *chef’s kiss*
@@richardketterer7965 Just a complement: Gabe is dead, the person we see throughout the play is a manifestation of Diana's mental illness - which is why he convinces her to stop taking her meds, why he convinces her to kill herself. But he's not just a hallucination, but he's the personification of mental illness - which is what he talks about in the songs I'm alive and Aftershocks. So, when Dan recognizes Gabe and talks to him, we learn that Dan has suffered from mental illness all along as well - after all, he's responding to a hallucination. Not only that, but he finally gives in (which is when he tenderly calls the hallucination 'Gabe') instead of trying to fight it off as he has throughout the play and his life. Also, the line 'Why didn't you go with her?' implies he's seen Gabe before - he just chose to ignore him, like in the song I've been, where Gabe tries to harmonize with Dan and succeeds for a second before Dan stops the harmonizing and starts singing the lyrics.
@@richardketterer7965 I agree with you Richard. One thing, though. Brian D'Arcy James isn't playing Dan in this clip, J. Robert Spencer is. Brian had already left the show before it went to Broadway.
I disagree with both you and Richard.
This actually shows that Dan has been suffering from the same condition as his wife, but he's being suppressing, denying, and ignoring it. But now that his wife is gone and he doesn't have to be the "strong" one in the relationship, he is vulnerable enough to let his barriers fall, acknowledging Gabe (which is the same 'thing' his wife tried to treat). That's why he has such a hard time saying his name, he doesn't want to admit that he, too, has a problem.
That moment in "Next to Normal" is truly heartbreaking. Once Dan acknowledges Gabe, Gabriel is gone forever, just what Dan had given 16 years to avoid. Life can begin if they choose it!
“Starting of small” I started sobbing instantly, I’m worried for the rest of the video
the two musical theatre moments that always bring me to tears are afternoon ABH, which is so underrated, and the finale of miss saigon. “hold me one more time” just breaks me.
That line broke me too.
That part of Next to Normal breaks me every time I see or hear it.
I was in a production of Alice by heart a few months ago, me and my cast-mates always cried backstage during afternoon and there were many occasions crying on stage during winter blooms, and there were occasions I cried listening to another room in your head, such an emotional musical, especially if your in your feels before listening to the soundtrack
Spring Awakening 😭 gets me every time along with Falsettos and Bare: A pop opera (as I write this i realise how many moments I’m weak for…… It’s Quiet Uptown?????)
"I could go on for a while but I'll leave you alone" would be a good title for literally anything
Love seeing Alice by Heart contextualised and showcased as the genuine masterpiece it is. It's my favourite show, thank you for including!
actually, in the Hamilton one, Eliza/Phillipa Soo lost a family member and Lin asked her if she was okay when she put her head on his shoulder. let the tears flow.
I heard that it's so sad 😞
@@Isabellaa_ia yeah, RIP Pippa family member
Isn't that the mannerism of every show? How do you know that?
alright the fact that you put chris as marius really was just *chef's kiss*
I remember watching Next to Normal and uncontrollably sobbing during this scene!!
I'm shocked that Miss Saigon wasn't included. I have seen so many touring Broadway productions of musicals that are infamous for making people cry (i.e. Finding Neverland, The King and I, Hamilton, Les Miserables, Rent, Wicked, and Dear Evan Hansen). I even saw the renowned 2017 Broadway revival of Once On This Island (which had tears flooding my eyes at the end). However, none of them made me feel as much gutwrenching sadness as Miss Saigon did.
I finally listened to it, I will definitely have to make a sequel now!
I just watched Alice by Heart a couple of days ago, and it was the first musical to ever make me cry. Like it left me broken for a good couple of hours.
where did you find it???
@@briannaunger2875 I have a bootleg if you’d like
@@isabellamoya3934 yes please omg!!!!!
@@briannaunger2875 shoot. The link doesn’t work any more 😭😭 I’m sorry!!
I love that you chose the Chris McCarrell's Marius for the video. I love his performance so much!
I've known Chris since he was a kid. SUCH a talent! I'm so happy he got to play this role on Broadway!
Yesss I’m so glad you used the Chris mccarrel empty chairs at empty tables. It is my all time favourite version ❤️
the clip of its quiet uptown is the one where pippa had just lost a family member recently and she starts to tear up at the end. you can see lin whispering asking if shes ok in the higher resolution versions. he doesnt take his eyes off her their entire exit.
Bro Tuck Everlasting makes me want to cry every time I watch it 😢
Also the dances that Alice in Alfred do in afternoon are the dace they do in those long eyes and I just wanna cry
I had to watch this on double speed because I didn’t have time to watch the whole thing, and some of these songs almost sound happy when they’re on double speed
That Empty Chairs was expertly staged. His friends standing behind him when he had his back turned and then disappearing when he looked for them. Wow…
Dear Evan Hansen was left out. I can't tell you how many times Ben Levi Ross made me sob when I saw Dear Evan Hansen on tour a few years ago.
The entirety of Miss Saigon really
Using the superior performance of Empty Chairs at Empty Tables I see
me, clicking on this video: there’s no way i’ll cry, right?
I WAS NOT PREPARED FOR THESE TEARS
Andy Mientus and Chris McCarrel make me cry EVERY TIME with Empty Chairs. Theirs are my favorites.
Also George Salazar sounds autotuned every time he sings? How does one do that??
alicebyheartalicebyheart
3:12 The moment when all of his friends blow out their candles and Marius is left alone makes me cry every time.
Why would you put ABH as the thumbnail I’m sobbing before I even start the video
My favorite sad Broadway moment was Phantom of the Opera... like the whole thing, basically lol
My pick would be “Something Just Broke” from Assassins. There are 2 songs in the show that focus on normal people, one being “How I Saved Roosevelt” about the things they did that prevented Zangara from pulling off his assassination attempt, and the other being the aforementioned “Something Just Broke.” The song focuses on an average person’s reaction to the Kennedy assassination. They describe where they were when they heard the news, talk about how they could never forget, so on and so forth. It is HEARTBREAKING and definitely a worthwhile inclusion, considering that there are people in the audience who weren’t alive for that, unlike for the 1997 version.
Alice by heart... wish this one play in my country
I see Alice by Heart in the thumbnail, I click
Aaron Tveit as Gabe is just soooooo good
넥 ㅠㅠㅠ "가브리엘....내 아들" 이 부분 항상 눈물나

I only clicked on this vid cause Colton Ryan
I'll add monday/invisible from trevor cos seeing that happen to a child is just heartbreaking.

Maria from West Side Story.
I need a bootleg of Alice by heart so bad ;(
definitely not alice by heart is what i watch. It does have winter blooms cut out though, but i just listen to it on the cast recording album
@@Cozycovegaming omg thank you so much 😭❤

Next to Normal will always get me. I always felt like Dan never properly grieved because he was trying so hard to keep it together for his wife who was falling apart. He never let her properly grieve either and always try to help her. People need to grieve in their own way to heal which is why she left. Then he had nothing to do but to face his own grief. I always imagined he does see Gabe in that moment as a way to heal, but it hurts again like he is losing him again. Just so heartbreaking. Some great moments and probably explains why I always cry now I cry when I'm happy or sad. I'm a mess. Thanks Broadway! I love you but I wish you also weren't so friggin expensive. That saddest moment is the pricing of some of these shows that I never got to experience live because they were over $100 a ticket. WOOOF
I am so surprised that Alexander Hamilton being PUERTO RICAN is not on this list
whos the guy singing empty chairs?
Chris McCarrell
The wonder, the legend himself Chris Mcarrell
