  • Fast and fun sailing on this overnight outing with Brigit, my 1960 O'day Ospray daysailer. At times, the waves were a bit much for my taste, and the weather challenging, but that's all part of the adventure.

    If you only have your jib sail up the boat will always want to turn away from the wind. Have seen many people get caught but that when leaving the dock or ramp with just their jib sail up when a gust comes through

      Yes you will likely have lee helm, but it's a viable option for some points of sail (down wind).

    Well done video! I have an AMF Sunbird 16' Cuddy sloop that I have sailed many times in Galveston Bay. Boats like yours and mine can be surprisingly sea worthy once you have gained some experience sailing in conditions you experienced. Surfing waves down wind can be a blast! Have fun and be safe.

    The lake I sail in gets much like this most days. On the cusp of not comfortable but once in a groove good sailing!

    Have you been to lake attitash in Mass? I swear I saw a boat like this with red sails. I was in the green sunfish!

    An of topic question. What do you think of boom roll the sail reefing onto the boom. Is it possible on a small boat to just roll the sail up on to the boom then attach to the mast w/ a degree of safety in les that 15knts of wind? I not trying to go fast just to get on the water and sail.

    • @cumberlandrover
      @cumberlandrover  2 месяца назад

      The main problem is that the rolled up main will cover the primary blocks on the boom for the mainsheet. It may be possible to rig aft boom sheeting, but that would not be ideal. Many O'days were designed with this roller reefing feature built in, but it requires special hardware. I have never tried this method. Never had access to the necessary hardware. Sailing without the jib greatly reduces power and heeling on my Ospray. You could experiment with sailing under only the main, and only the jib. Obviously, the boat will not point as high into the wind.

    What a workout! You and Sydney should trailer that little girl out to NC and get on the Pamlico Sound.

    Good trip. Big waves, a following sea, shifty winds, rain, thunder, lightning, sunshine and calm... quite a trip for an overnighter. Ahoy from Charlotte Harbor Florida...

    My American 16 is very, very similar to your Ospray. I like how easy the little boat is to handle alone, but the cuddy is too small.

    Ky Lake has claimed many a boat when the afternoon storms brew in summer. It's scared me more than once. Waves do funny things when depth goes from 100 to 4' in the middle of the lake in places.

    really pretty boat, though coming from New Zealand I found it funny you calling the weather "rough" cause to us that's nice weather lol.
    we used to sail 12 ft Sunburst dinghies and 17ft Sea Scout cutters in 2-3 Meter swells (roughly 6ft+) on the regular and it was so much fun, your boat could definitely handle worse.
    Great Video though!

      Same here. Rain is usually no big deal, but this was my first time caught out in a thunderstorm. It was a little intimidating.

      Absolutely. It wouldn't be an adventure without a few challenges. And it's good to know what the skipper and boat can handle. I definitely increased my experience and confidence on this trip.

    I've wondered why the cuddy was so small on these but I guess it is just a storage space. Looks like a pretty good boat though!

    • @cumberlandrover
      @cumberlandrover  11 месяцев назад +1

      Yep, it's basically just storage space. It can provide some shelter from the elements, but not big enough to sleep in. Would be a good place for kids or a dog to get out of the sun.

      @@cumberlandrover stepping the mast has been an issue. I think I have a plan now

    • @cumberlandrover
      @cumberlandrover  8 месяцев назад

      It's pretty tough with the original setup. You have to pick the mast up vertically and lower it through the cuddy. I would only attempt it on level ground in very light air. A tabernacle kit from D&R Marine makes stepping the mast easy. @@beorbeorian150

    • @beorbeorian150
      @beorbeorian150 8 месяцев назад

      @@cumberlandrover - I should have just did that. But deep into creating a system to help. You may not have this issue in your boat but one issue I had was the foam under the benches and in the bow was completely soaked. I pulled it all out. Replaced with plastic bottles. The foam weighed 100 pound.
