I was curious of the legality, so went looking. At least for Part 91, it appears to be somewhat explicitly allowed. Per 14 CFR § 91.209:
"Operate an aircraft that is equipped with an anticollision light system, unless it has lighted anticollision lights. However, the anticollision lights need not be lighted when the pilot-in-command determines that, because of operating conditions, it would be in the interest of safety to turn the lights off."
Beyond that, there's always the blanket statement "In an emergency that requires immediate decision and action for the safety of the flight, the pilot in command of an aircraft may deviate..."
That said, I don't think I'd run dark unless I was IFR in positively controlled airspace. With ADS-B it's arguably not unreasonably risky to do it VFR for a minute, and my opinion would probably change if my retinas were being seared by a stupidly powerful Alicrapess laser.

I have been a charter boat captain for over 23 years and with All the other elements weather and what not and issues with the vessel or any number of small issues..limited viz is a huge one for us. We don't have ATC, we have a regular ol radar anyone can purchase for $2500 on a MFD system.
Point being when I am in whiteout fog and it's low light (early or late) the last phucken thing I/ we need is another distraction.
I have commercial and private pilots as customers and both have said in their opinions running boats is way harder due to the lack of someone else watching.

Did you happen to catch what happened with FlexJet LXJ347 on Tuesday, April 30th? They dove several thousand feet at 21.33 UTC, and quickly diverted to Columbia.
Here's what little I cobbled together: They took off from Pontiac MI, everything was normal until some time after they reached FL450. Then they did a hard turn and an insane rapid five from 45000 ft to 10000 ft in a matter of minutes, diverted to Columbia while still descending. I tried to catch it on LiveATC, but I can only track the audio until ZOB45 Ultra Hi, somewhere above Findlay (OH) around 21.20-ish UTC, where they're directed to contact 128.77 which is ZID98. Except instead of turning towards ZID98, they appear to veer towards what I think is ZID97 (Marion, Delaware, Columbia). They go from squawking 7700 at 21.33 UTC to being on the ground at 21.53. Insanely curious as to what caused the dive.

@@mattz1230That’s exactly how it works if the missile is programmed to not filter out the source. Normally missiles are somewhat source-averse for obvious reasons. In general homing onto a “laser pointer” source is much easier than onto an illuminated target. There’s just much more light. A very narrow filter can also be used to discard most other light so that the missile only sees the source. With a green laser it’s especially nice since there are two wavelengths - the pumping IR and the unconverted green. That’s a very characteristic green laser pointer signature and no other natural or man-made sources have it. In other words - homing onto a green laser pointer with a high degree of certainty is a much easier task than homing onto other light sources.

      @@absurdengineering NOT AT ALL.
A missile is looking for a spot of reflected energy at a specific wavelength. When a laser EMITS it is in a very tight cone, less than a half a mil- essentially a point. Because this light is not being scattered, the seeker can't see it. The light has to strike a target and lose coherence to be used for seeking.
And if you think that seekers can be programmed to not seek a source, then you don't understand lasers.

@@mattz1230Designated target homing missiles have light intensity limits so if shit happens they won’t cause friendly fire incidents.
There’s plenty of scattered light from a green laser pointer, and the wavelengths are so unique that a decent pair of image-intensified image sensors, one filtered for IR, the other for the green wavelength, will do the job of picking it out in the urban environment no problem.
The target-designated missiles you talk about were designed for a particular job they do well. had hoped it is obvious that the missile’s tracker would need to be custom designed for this green-laser hunting job. No off-the-shelf missile would do it, nor should it.

Mr Anonymous, if you actually knew something about these LASER Pointers.
Most of them are not "high powered", they are Class IIIB LASER devices emitting less than 10mW of radiated energy. The simple fact is human eyes are the MOST receptive to GREEN. Because of this, Green Lasers are the most visible.
"High Powered" applies to devices emitting 100mW or more and can actually visually burn/cut materials and cause near instant physical blindness. I actually own "high power" lasers, but at least for matters at hand, I never point them skywards without doing a visual ( looking for NAV/Strobes ) and ADSB/RADAR verified check for traffic within a 75 Degree Arc of the sky around me.
10mW of LASER energy can travel on-wards of 15 miles and be still visible though heavily dispersed and looks more like a super long range spotlight than anything resembling a LASER 'dot' that also depends on origination point of line of sight and horizon distance.
the problem is, rather than actually tackling the issue with LASER detection, our brilliant Government just decided to ban them, this forced all the cheaper companies who mislabel devices for a quick sell to get products sold, and those of us who are responsible enough, used to have access to decent pointers and devices now, have to fork out $1000+ for devices that certify to remain to be sold.
outright banning them only made the issue worse.

Lasers (especially cheap pointers) diverge extremely quickly to the point where they're basically not an eye hazard after 500-1000ft. The issue is it's still a lot of light and if a laser hits the cockpit it will illuminate the cockpit causing the pilots to lose their adjusted night vision which is very dangerous.
