    Thank you for the video. Some fantastic designs... I agree with lots of points here. Personally it feels like the more you RV, a descent kitchen and a toilet/shower could be acceptable by the most people as long as it is functional and feels well done. On the other hand the three elements: 1-Bed, 2-Sitting/living/dining space 3-Storage space varies by needs, by a lot. Factors such as being a full-timer(s) vs. occasional RVer, or being a single, couple, with kids, pets... being active with lots of gear, people who can get homesick quick(nothing wrong with it!) and prefers "homey" feeling. Or the ones who demand; "I need a proper, office like space, while drinking my coffee and sitting down with my book/laptop pretty much every morning!" types, etc... To people who are going into RVing, I suggest them to monitor their moods during morning and right before the bed hours. These are the moments when we are the most tired or energized in general. Our demands peak and we're not as flexible with ourselves during those times. Another point is Rving is being flexible by itself. You just have to. Basically, it's a moving-living space that is limited by the road lane width… Anyways, enjoy the view out there!

    • @lisasomewhere88
      @lisasomewhere88  Год назад +2

      Very wise words! Yeah, you really need to know yourself and not what you wish you would do or think you would do when RVing. True! It's all so individual..
      Thank you! :)

    Another bed option not mentioned is two twin beds (or two sofas during the day) with a walkway in between, leading to a rear bathroom, like in one of the Travado models. (The kitchen sits right behind the driver seat.)
    We chose the basic fixed bed for three reasons -- 1. the massive garage underneath in which we can fit a double inflatable kayak, two bikes, chairs, outside table, etc.; 2. we prefer not to make and unmake the bed each day; and 3. with a separate sofa & table area up front, it works better when one of us goes to bed early or sleeps in later. Thanks for the video.

    • @lisasomewhere88
      @lisasomewhere88  2 года назад +1

      Oh right, I didn"t see that one yet, thanks! But yeah, if you got the space in the vehicle for other "hang out areas" and want lots of storage, a fixed bed is the way to go! :)

  • @friedkrill

    Amaaaazing! this is my kind of nerdery :) Thank you. I can see how unhappy I would be to reach any stage of exhaustion and not have a bed already set up. Or 2 in the afternoon, loafing in a national park, and looking to lie down for a 1 hour nap aaaaand... setting up a bed for the privilege. Ewwww. Even more than that, I can't imagine waking up on a cold morning, poorly slept, and having to executive function my way into putting my bed away before having a place to sit and work. It's fixed for me! Thank you so much for this comprehensive review.

    If the mattress is a also the seat cushions, I can imagine just sitting on the bed with a table that is over it a few inches. That saves the hassle of taking it apart and stowing the linens. Also, am loving the idea of a bed that drops down from the ceiling! Could have a platform below it to hang out on when bed is raised. Great video!

    I have another lift idea that I think should work - Why do we want to have a bed blocking our head space while awake, why not instead have a couch "blocking" our head space while we are sleeping so we don't need it anyway. In other words, not the bed moves down, but the platform with couch moves up... revealing a bed under it.This would be less cramped during the day because even if the resulting head clearance may be more or less the same, the ceiling is clean and you don't see the bed at all.

    • @lisasomewhere88

    Thank you lisa for such an AWESOME summary of so many possible bed options!
    I have also been watching VAN videos for the past two years for inspiration :D. I want to convert a small van (5.4m in length), and came up with an idea of how I want to do the bed to maximise space. And I always felt it was weird that I had not seen anyone actually build the bed that way in any of the hundreds videos I've watched :D. And suddenly here it is! The nr 3 on your list. So nice to see it actually being built and so nice you had linked to the original video so that I could even get even more inspiration on how to actually build it. Kudos!

    I think im going to go for a more japanese style layout, meaning, doing alot of things on the floor so that I can utilize as much of the floor space as possible for whatever might arise. Maybe a Japanese style dinner table with cushions around it for the chairs. Then the table can do something foldy and modular somewhere when not in need or use. I also need a desk area to make mysic and edit video. And room to stretch and what not too. Thinking I'll have alot of very narrow furniture that won't impede the main space much st all for things like the kitchenette and storage. Hidden luggage loo with a hidden fridge near the front maybe? And if I ever actually need the van to transport anything large ish, I can also use it for that. Keep it as useful in as many different ways as possible. Multi functionally modular and whatnot lol.

    I have hated our van build since we built it with a friend who was set on the design. The fixed bed going all the way from the back doors and about 6 inches into the middle door has always driven me crazy. I am very likely going to tear it out and redo it combining a couple of these (yours and one or two others) to make our 144 sprinter be much more comfortable to live in for two of us and a dog. Thank you for comparing all of these. I definitely agree with your rating scale! Thank you!

    Very comprehensive video, but you glossed over the twin bed design like in the Travato 59K. This has some distinct advantages. Like single travelers can keep one side made up as a dedicated bed and the other side as a sitting area. Or being able to have a comfortable mattress without any seams (even couples if they're willing to sleep separately).

    • @lisasomewhere88

      That's a good point, I think in the UK more people prefer your set up, as far as I've seen. The other argument would be that when you mainly use the sliding door to get in and out, you're immediately in the bedroom, so opening the door to a kitchen feels less intimate. That's how I feel about it. But I get your point!

    I have been surprised everyone seems to be okay with sleeping on a split-up mattress. I had one split in half down the middle and one of us would often wake up in the gap.. also some of these designs are excellent birth control, since you'll avoid having sex entirely

    • @lisasomewhere88
      @lisasomewhere88  2 года назад

      Hahaha... I agree, a split mattress is not always ideal - there it's just really important that they're super tight and don't move. Then you shouldn't sink into the gap.

    I don't really like any of these. Rear U shape sitting area that has minimal conversion is what Im leaning towards - NO TABLE. We want it as open and clutter free as possible. All the gadget stuff is so heavy, overbuilt and clumsy. Also.... so many of the builds are focused on van life, we want a travel van for camping and travel, not for living. Different pyramid and approach.

    "Sleep horizontally?" How does one sleep vertically? 🤷‍♂️

    • @lisasomewhere88
      @lisasomewhere88  4 месяца назад +1

      That's in terms of the vans direction, seen from a planning perspective. vertically meaning along the long side of the vehicle. :)

    After watching many, many build videos I think my personal favorite so far has been the one used by RP in their Rebellion 4x4. It gives plenty of room to sleep, it's not claustrophobic at all, it allows either person to leave the bed without crawling over the other, it provides a decent dinette option, you could leave the bed permanently set up if desired, it provides good access to the roof, and it accommodates a large garage beneath. The only catch is that they've used the super high roof option for the Sprinter, which isn't widely available. But if I ever get the opportunity to do my own build I'm almost certain to follow that basic layout.

    I just don't get it. Beds in a van are such a waste of space and time. Long live the humble hammock. Quick and easy to set up. Comfortable. Stuffable and stowable. No problem finding a level spot for the van. No need for blocks and levelers.

    • @lisasomewhere88
      @lisasomewhere88  2 месяца назад

      Yes, they are so comfortable! Great idea for a solo traveller! :) But not feasible trying to sleep 2.
