I can see that, in volume 8 The morning departure chapter 2 just as Guts was about to leave, Griffith stated that he belongs to him. Going on to the morning departure chapter 3 both of em started fighting Griffith said in his head "I might really kill him!! Even then, if I can't have him...I don't care!!" Implying tough love "well dam if I can't have you no one can" but yeah they definitely had a little bit of love brewing in the love pot, maybe not much romantically but Griffith turned into a yandere right then lol.

I think it was his way of going all in. Before he transforms he grabs Gut's hand. He still has some humanity left but when the demons tell him what needs to be done he knows he can't have both his ambition and his friends so he makes them hate him so he can fully let go. Throughout the entire golden age arc you can see this inner conflict ambition vs friendship, him vs them, and in the end he chose himself and became something truly evil. In many ways representations of evil are watered down now days but not Berserk.

It's so depressing and horrific whilst also being a compelling story that shows the horros of SA and betrayal like no other story I've seen. It really puts you in that mindset of "What kind of suffering have I been blind to?"
That is what I love so much about this story. It's a tragedy that doesn't just traumatize you, it traumatizes you in a way that makes you empathetic to the world around you.
If Griffith had a funeral, no one will be present. Not even the priest and the people who will carry and bury his coffin. His tombstone will just say "Die B*tch, You deserve it." without mentioning his name ever
