I usually don't see artists performing without earpieces, this is actually the first time I notice someone doing it. Either way, this is such a good performance and daaamn that sax... In my opinion, Kendrick is one of the best today.
Tbh a load of artists aren't comfortable with "in-ears". If you've never sang and heard yourself only through your headphones/in-ears it's really weird as hell for quite a while.
i mean... it is a song written to justify the inexcusable, hence: "But I could never right my wrongs 'Less I write it down for real, P.S" just wanted to add this bcuz it felt necessary, but what aidan said was enough.
@@aidanalcaraz5855You CLEARLY missed the point. Sometimes when watching someone perform live, you can tell how much they're really feeling it. That was apparent in this video, and it had nuthin' to do with Kendrick writing the song. Perhaps he was vibin' the way that he was because of the band...whatever the reason, it was dope.
Yes! I totally agree. I heard it here first and looked up the original and yeah man, this is better. Kudos to that band, but kudos to Kendrick too, his flow was superb. Love it.
the guy on the saxophone is terrace martin. this version of the song was produced by him. his album 3chordfold pulse features a live version of it but there are studio versions available
Best part is you can tell he's really feeling his music just by his voice and face and I love that! He's by far, one of the best out right now. The whole Good Kid Maad City album is phenomenal!
Kendrick is the only rapper that my dad and any other late 80's and early 90's grownups can relate to because, he so fresh, and has that back in da day soul. RESPECT!
I think I've watched this about 15 times....! All the instruments sounded so great and Kendrick is a talent. Didn't slip on any of the rhymes and the band was in sync. So many different people had to come together to make that sound the way it did and they rocked it
Yeah I wasn't trying to hate on Em or anything. That's just what came to mind first for me as I actually remember seeing that on SNL and being a bit disappointed. I imagine for television they might have made some adjustments that he normally wouldnt do for a live performance. And I havent seen him live so I'm sure you're right on. What I think make's Kendrick's performance stand out so much is because he is on such a big stage, he just did it all himself, no hype man, just live instruments
I cant lie I prefer the song with just Kendrick. Not because of the beef. I just really prefer his voice and lyrics in the song. It flows better too. The way he writes fits the hook better too. Maybe thats just me.
Hell yeah coming from a drummer I LOVE to see a comment like this! I love doing drum covers to my favorite artists because it just gives the song a magic feeling that the track alone just can't do
Kendrick Lamar is the best MC in his generation nobody touch his skills he's too far from any new generation rappers . That album good kid mad city one the greatest hip-hop albums ever made
man I swear the musical arrangements of Kendricks live performances are just so fucking astounding! every musician is a master of his craft. I would pay for an album with just live kendrick tracks.
Man this Performance showed me he uses rap as a instrument. The way he jams and has no earpiece in. It feels like a soul singer who just used flowing words instead of vocal runs.
Rap with a live band is so great
he is also singing a little bit
@@agamaz5650 Not yet
Yea. Npr tiny desk is so good. Mac Saba and paak are my favorites
rip steve irwin if you want more live band music with rap go check out the maybach music series by Rick Ross
rip steve irwin not really depend on who’s in stage too
The saxophone in the background really added to the music
+Michael Harper (Mike) l
Michael Harper Gives it a more swing vibe compared to the studio track.

What does the earpiece actually do?
Anna K monitorise the sound and he can listen to himself and the music
Its cause the snl stage is small enough to where he might be able to hear himself through the monitors infront of him just fine
Respect to you.
Tbh a load of artists aren't comfortable with "in-ears". If you've never sang and heard yourself only through your headphones/in-ears it's really weird as hell for quite a while.
That sax addition was genius
Sounds like it was meant for TPAB
Sax was played by Terrace Martin!
Singing your song live is scary. Doing it without an earpiece is brave. Nice job, Kendrick Lamar. Keep up the good work.
Sax is amazing
Why is it brave to do it without an earpiece?
+Dan Willigenburg because he cant hear himself over the band the earpiece just lets it echo so they can hear and adjust their voices
@@brandonw4359 that’s Terrace Martin!
It's so MUCH BETTER LIVE

Erik Giovani his live shows with the band is better too lol
And without that goofy ah Drake verse

Kendrick needs to do Unplugged eventually
I would LOVE to see him do a Tiny Desk Concert.
Wow he really like his song. He looks like he's jamming to it.
Why wouldnt he he wrote them 😂
I’m having trouble trying to understand this comment 🧐

This is actually better than the original. Man Kendrick should be putting this on an album.

That's what said about "i" he should have put the snl VERISON on the Album!!!
bjoker2421 and he did
Nasser Adam This keeps his performances memorable and legendary.
one of my fav kendrick performances ever
I think Kendrick might be elavating mainstream hip hop.
+Louis-Alexandre Simard As in he is becoming bad? or making mainstream hip-hop better? If its making hip hop better i agree
+Karatemaster07 Elevating would only mean being better. Not worse. To elevate is to bring something to the next level or to raise something up.

Looking back at this comment in 2022, and you were correct.
Love the live band.
Right! They step it up with that smooth band, wow!
Yeah, they're awesome! Do they have a name or something?
This song is too chill mayne!
Omg!! Glad liked it tupac!!☺😂

U inspired Kendrick Tupac
Tupac approves
It's kind of funny how Janet Jackson performed Anytime Anyplace on SNL back in 1994 then Kendrick comes on SNL with a sample of her song.....cool.
The irony
band is smooth
The guy on the sax is killing it. Is this version available for download?

aww baby kendrick
This version is beautiful omg
This performance is fantastic, it actually really reminds me of Marvin Gaye. Especially with the awesome live band.
The guy on the bass. DAMN killin it bro
jj smith on bass. He was Mary j. Blige's bassist for a long time.
holy shit he’s a psychic

Both Kendrick and the live band went in sounds amazing :)

There's something about real instruments that really make a song ... I lovee this !!
Have to come back to this, every now and again
The song sounds so much better with that live band!
A lot of his songs do... I definitely want to see him live.
The best part is he sounds the same live, not like most rappers who sound completely different. His voice is pure love.
Kendrick is the only rapper that my dad and any other late 80's and early 90's grownups can relate to because, he so fresh, and has that back in da day soul. RESPECT!

That band tho! Kendrick was vibing man. Shout out to all of his success.
Kendrick brought back the one thing modern rappers seem to have completely forgotten: A sick ass flow.
Not a big hip hop fan, but I think Kendrick just made me a new listener. Great job with the band too!
I love that Adam says "Once again, Kendrick Lamar" because ONCE AGAIN I'M HERE LISTENING TO THIS SONG. Kendrick the GOAT
This live version got me wanting to pimp a butterfly. 😁

He's making love to that microphone, oh gosh! I love him!
he sounds the same as he does on his tracks. true talent.
Kendrick killed it live, his flow is so clear. That saxophone player was killing it.
So smooth 🔥🔥
the fact that his music can be played by instruments instead of having to be played over the speakers is great
kendrick's lyrics are amazing one of my favorite songs right here especially the drake feature
x7 grammy nominations we better go home with nothin less than 3

Unlike all today's rap, you can hear his passion in his words
now this is true music, where genres dont shun each other out but instead join together to make beautiful music.
That was a tight performance! A nice jazzed out R&B feel but it was a rap song. I loved it!
Kendrick is forever Hip Hop Royalty!🐐✨💯
Is this his normal touring band? I'd love to see him live. This band is the truth and he's killing it

This is why I think Kendrick should do a Red Bull Symphonic show.
How can you dislike this... seriously !!
Eminem lip syncs though, at least on his TV performances. Kendrick is the best I've ever heard to do it without the help of background vocals.

Still one of the best live performances I've seen on tv.
I love how he had Terrace Martin (saxophone) and MixedbyAli with him for this
