The song is a revenge song. In Kendricks Song "sing about me" his friend is killed. In this song he gets revenge by having sex with the killers girl. The first two verses are about having sex with her, and how she uses the sex to get over the pain of her lover being in prison for life. Kendrick uses his influence as a famous rapper to lay with her. In the 3rd verve he talks about prison walls. And it's revealed the woman is the baby daddy of the killer. And how much she misses him in prison. Until Kendrick comes back around to comfort her.

Ive been listening to this album for about a year and a half. today when i was listening to this song on spotify i learned that the song is actually about him sleeping with a woman, who is an ex lover to a man who killed his best friend years ago. The man is serving life in prison. The first verse is about him sleeping with the ex lover, then the verse where he gets so engulfed, is him expressing how he was fucking the chick out of revenge. In the last verse theres a part where he is saying that he hopes the guy that killed his friend listens to this song and the song "sing about me" from GKMD. (which the first verse in "sing about me", is about his friend that was killed, told from the deceased older brothers perspective.) i love this song even more after learning this.

The whole song describes Kendrick fucking the girl of a guy who killed his boy as retaliation ("killed my homeboy and God spared your life"). The first verse is about sex, and he later says in the song "so when you play the song rewind the first verse, about me abusing my power so you can hurt. About me and her in the shower whenever she horny...about the only girl cared about you when you asked her, and how she fucking on a famous rapper" It's really fucking genius.

To anyone that isn't familiar with Kendrick Lamar or TO PIMP A BUTTERFLY, here's the best way I can attempt to put it in words:
It's brutally honest about a number of real-world issues (e.g. the rise and fall of African-American culture, depression, religion, materialism, etc.) and those issues are brought to life over a groovy mix of rap, jazz, funk, and R&B melodies. If you want to experience music that has equal substance and style, this one's for you.
Hope this helps! Thanks for reading!

I'm sure theres many other things you took from the album but i can't imagine it being as good without the relatablity aspect, the subject matter might even be uncomfortable.

    To Pimp A Butterfly
“The caterpillar is a prisoner to the streets that conceived it
Its only job is to eat or consume everything around it, in order to protect itself from this mad city
While consuming its environment the caterpillar begins to notice ways to survive
One thing it noticed is how much the world shuns him, but praises the butterfly
The butterfly represents the talent, the thoughtfulness, and the beauty within the caterpillar
But having a harsh outlook on life the caterpillar sees the butterfly as weak and figures out a way to pimp it to his own benefits
Already surrounded by this mad city the caterpillar goes to work on the cocoon which institutionalizes him
He can no longer see past his own thoughts
    He’s trapped
When trapped inside these walls certain ideas take roots, such as going home, and bringing back new concepts to this mad city
    The result?
Wings begin to emerge, breaking the cycle of feeling stagnant
Finally free, the butterfly sheds light on situations that the caterpillar never considered, ending the internal struggle
Although the butterfly and caterpillar are completely different, they are one and the same."

My man literally mentions Compton in every other bar he spits and Ellen be like, "I'm such a fan... You're from Compton, right?" BRUH...

+Rafael Campos Sometimes people say weird things when they don't feel comfortable talking about a topic. Ellen knows that she's not part of the crowd and she knows her audience is worse off. She's trying not to say something stupid, which is admirable.

Ellen is a huge music fan. Her question wasn’t for her own sake, it was for the audience who doesn’t have a clue who Kendrick Lamar is. She knows lyrics to music you would never expect which is one of the reasons I love her and she is so humble. She does a lot, for a lot of people and foundations.

Man he really resents the guy that killed his friend. He has his eyes closed imagining him sitting behind that wall and you can see those many emotions spewing out of him. Anger, passion, sadness, guilt. Man dude is next level
