    Depending on your hair texture locs will bunch but they smooth out with time and the entire loc looks uniform - it's just part of the process.

    My Loctician purposely started my hair in 2 strand twists that she parted precisely and plans to split on my first maintenance appointment! I am excited because I haven't seen ANY loc journeys started this way on video. But when she suggested it, it rang true for me because I had just come out of a period of time when I wore 2 strands a LOT, and I realized that each portion loc'ed. She said it was a good alternative for my longer THICK hair and I think she is right. I was torn between comb could and two strands and now I feel like I have the best of both worlds. Thanks for making this video... your Locs are coming along beautifully. BTW, I know the pain of retightning Sisterlocks, I had 472 of them for 6.5 years before I combed them out. Now I will happily rock my 144 😁. Be blessed on your journey and thanks again!

      How much time did you use before you went for maintenance? ScrappaDeeDooDa

    • @Scrappadeedooda
      @Scrappadeedooda 4 года назад +2

      Kimberly, I waited about 4 weeks before my first maintenance appt, then another 4 weeks before she popped them apart. I went every 6 weeks or so my first year but if I skipped an appointment I just retwisted myself and now I go about every 8 weeks or whenever I feel like it. I can easily palmroll and retwist on my own now.

    I wanted my hair to be latched from the start but my stylist had me start with comb coils. I am a guy who always had a fade before but that helped me develop patience with my hair and I appreciated it but I love latching and do it every few months now that I'm locked.
    Also, I've given up on castor oil as well. It's probably fine, but I'm heavy handed when I put products on my head so I use a coconut oil, aloe gel, and peppermint oil mix to moisturize now. I love your vids! Thanks for posting!

  • @Windsingerful

    I think most folks have some bunching when they begin locs, because that's the longer hair contracting, part of the locking process' start. I'm just shy of 2 years, started with 2ST, and I have some bumps, but I see they are less pronounced than they used to be, and plus, they contribute to the uniqueness of my locs. I determined that when I get about 3 years, with the length and maturity of my locs solidified, I may give them a trim and any bumps from those beginning days would go bye-bye. I also think there's things I might've done differently in starting my locs, looking back. But I've come this far...no turning back. Forward to accepting the locs I have as they are, and look forward to what they are becoming.

    Hi, I'm new to your channel. As far as the bunching, mine started bunching when I started doing braid outs when my locs were about 4-5 months old. I had to tug on them to get the bunching out. You live and you learn. All of the uniqueness adds a little character to them. Take Care

  • @najeebasheer9093
    @najeebasheer9093 8 лет назад +1

    One thing I understand about starting with braids is that you will see that braid pattern for a very long time I've seen people on here that still have that braid pattern a year later. I decided to go with sisterlocks and we are told to braid and band just when washing to avoid bunching and unraveling, but not necessary a night. It took two days and a lot of coins but I haven't regretted it for a second except that I wish they were all the same size like the larger ones at my crown (which are still very small) but that's only because I maintain them myself.

  • @jennifer_loves_8766
    @jennifer_loves_8766 8 лет назад +7

    I have that same bunching as well ..... all so very true and on point... I used braids to start my locs and they were locs at about 6 weeks but I washed them every 3 to 4 days

  • @psylettagilroy
    @psylettagilroy 8 лет назад +12

    Your locks look AMAZING! I started with interlocks and I am SO glad that I did, because I have to shampoo my hair often due to a scalp condition. Even though mine were VERY short when I started, I STILL have bunching, but I love my locks. In regards to products and red flags...YES! I recently decided to try neem oil and that HAS to be the STINKIEST oil that there is and I KNOW that that it will take QUITE some time to get the stench out of my hair. I had read that it helps with seborrheic dermatitis and I have been SO desperate to get rid of flakes that I was willing to try most anything. In the end, my scalp didn't like it AND now I have to work hard to get rid of the stench from my hair AND my pillow. Other than that, I learned early on that I need to "do me", because there are a lot of recommendations out there and MOST of them DO NOT work for me. I have truly enjoyed your videos. You seem to put a lot of thought into them. I love the vibes, too. So relaxing and encouraging!

    • @fro_realll
      @fro_realll 8 лет назад

      gilroygal36 I've considered locking my hair, but was afraid to do so because of my seborrehic dermatitis. Has it made your locking process difficult because of it?

    • @psylettagilroy
      @psylettagilroy 8 лет назад

      No ma'am, because I interlocked. That way it doesn't unravel as easily. I did have some of them loosen up or come out around the perimeter, but my hair was super short and I shampoo it every two to three days. If I don't I will get sores on my scalp. I also cannot use ANY oils or products, and interlocking does not require them.

      Hi! No, I never tried the neem pills. I am very hesitant to take many supplements because of my sensitive tummy.

    • @fayetaylor1998
      @fayetaylor1998 8 лет назад

      gilroygal36 you are not lying when you say that Neem is the Stinkiest! ha I was on the hunt for the best oils for my hair and came across it. But when that smell hit my nose. I was like no Buenos! The aroma is too strong for me but I heard it's a good oil though. But like you said everything doesn't work for every body.

    I once wanted sister locks and one of the things many sisters told me was to separate locks DAILY. Also Banding during wash days. Less less product. No thick oil like castor or Shea bc it attracts lint.

    I love your channel. I see that you are well informed and that you prepare each video and I appreciate that. SO thank you. I am so sorry to hear about your castor oil issue. I find that the cure all for my locs and removing unwanted scents is baking soda. I know it is very stripping, but it works really well for castor oil and other oils as well. I do baking soda to the scalp and then a water, ACV, ALOE VERA mix on top. That way my locs are super clean, scent free, and conditioned (without the stripped feeling). The Aloe vera is key. I use fresh aloe blended so fine that there is no residue - it is a great conditioner with great results and causes little to no slippage for me. (I do have a dandruff issue, that is the main reason why I apply baking soda it to the scalp). I do no apply it to my hair. I let the mixture run the length of my hair.
    In regards to the interlocking, I was like you in some ways. I did go to a SL trainee and received terrible locs that I ended up taking out. I reinstalled most of them myself (a SL consultant did the top section....long story). I reinstalled with braids, however my hair was long and the braid pattern doesn't really disappear on long hair. After a year I two strand twisted the braided portion (which is now locking). I was advised to do two strand twist from the beginning by a really good loctition because when it locks it would look similar to SLs. The loctition was right. I wish I had followed her advice. *the braids did keep my locs from bunching.*
    In regards to braiding and banding, I used to do it but I had to stop. I have bad dandruff and braiding and banding didn't allow me to get a clean scalp, and I would have build up at the base. So I stopped all of it and continued to wash on a weekly basis and haven't looked back. Dandruff is under control with the help of tea tree and oregano oil with my weekly wash. And I don't separate my locks after washing. I have a super tight curl pattern so it allows me to separate my locks every 4 washes/weeks. And I retighten every five weeks.
    So in conclusion, we live and learn...and share with others.
    *side bar: love castor oil and the smell...the thickness deters me from putting it in my hair. As a loose natural I swore by it though! I still do for when I am sick!

    I started my locs 2nd July. Coils but found the back would not hold si i interlocked the ones which would not hold and now the back of my hair is locked and the front half is way behind. so i belive interlocking does speed the process. My friend who started the same time with coils has always banded her hair at night and has extreme bunching.

    I've been watching your loc journey for a while. Mine are a bit thicker than yours, they'll be 2 years in April, but I've definitely had some of your experiences. I started mine with coils at a salon but have done all the maintenance myself. I knew nothing about banding, so I too have a similar amount of bunching like you do, also mostly around the crown of my head. (Also the first 9 months of my locs' life was spent in a developing country with realllllly hard water, many people there experience hair loss issues with it - so I wonder if that also attributed to my bunching issues). I have also had a bit of marrying at the root that I have yet to entirely correct (oops lol, we'll see what happens). And I also have some castor oil that I use off and on because I don't really want to waste it, but I really don't like how thick it is. I can still feel it weighing down my locs for months after using it, and it isn't until I use some ACV or blue dawn soap several times that I can get the sticky castor oil feel out of my locs. Ugh.

    For your texture of hair coils would have came out. My brother has your hair and he had 3 sets of coils before he switched to interlocks like I told him. He does get them palm rolled for his retwist but his installation was interlocks. With Sisterlocks we braid and band before washing and separate after washing.

    • @Bindi_Marc
      @Bindi_Marc  8 лет назад

      Interestingly, before I had locs, I used to wear coils (I called them finger coils) and they would stay in my hair indefinitely. I had no idea that was a technique used to start coils. And, yup, absolutely about the sisterlocks... that's where I kept hearing the idea of banding from.. the sisterlock community.

    I have a question about the castor oil, was it black castor oil (ppl usually get jamaican) and did you try to add in any essential oils? The smell doesn't really bother me, but I know a lot of ppl that say essential oils helped them with the smell (and they can also benefit your hair depending on which one you choose!)
    But I'm 100% on board with the "don't follow the trend and judge for yourself". I tell that to every natural I meet lol

    If i could start over i would have started out with coils vs 2 strand twists...they just unravel n then i would have to retwist...plus i feel like the hair locs faster when finger coils. Just my exp

    Newbie here and i'm confused: the "bunching" at the bottom, isn't that budding? I thought that was to be expected

    Great video! Always insightful. I'm into my second month with my second set of locs and while my hair was started with coils for a second time, I'm a lot more patient. I have noticed that my hair is a lot more softer and finer after I cut my locs but it's starting to thicken up and the twists are starting to hold up longer.

    Your naturally beautiful! I have a question, you previously were a minitwister. I too am prepping to be a minitwister long term (planning to install 200-400 twist because I'm not confident enough with my loc strategy). I have a good night time stretching strategy in place, a great biweekly wash technique with minitwist installed and even a great retwist method (After a fresh poo/DC I plan to section off 10 plats of twist and Bantu them for one week per month and take one section and take one twist down detangle it and retwist one by one. After the whole section is complete I Bantu it back up til their all done then I stretch my hair overnight and enjoy them another whole month). My question to you is do you regret committing to locks? Would you rather have stayed a long term micro minitwister.

      *My question to you is do you regret committing to locks? Would you rather have stayed a long term micro minitwister.*
      Definitely not. I specifically wanted locs so it was never long term mini twisting vs locking for me. I went in knowing locs was what I wanted. Now if locs aren't what you want... long term twisting is a good alternative.

      Thank you so much for the reply, I'm merely afraid to do it on my own without knowing all the ends and outs before DOING IT because I know it's permanent and either it's a touchdown or the inevitable big chop because I didn't do it right. So yes, I guess I'd better stick with micro minitwist until I can afford to see a licensed skilled loctician. Your awesome, thanks!
