- This is a compilation of N64 commercials that ran on American television between 1996 and 2001.
Man, remember how much Nintendo's ad campaign started looking like Sega's during later years of the 16-bit era? They certainly didn't stop there, either. Some of these are legit edgy in surprisingly ways, and all of them are hilariously dated thanks to their "attitude" and the way they strive for shock value. A couple of them actually succeed, too.
I'm personally a huge fan of the Blitz commercial that blasts an old lady through a grocery store display. And anyone else catch The Sherminator in the Yoshi's Story clip, the notices for Nintendo's AOL keyword, or the clip that Family Guy apparently referred to when thinking up ways to mess with Helen Keller?
Which campaign did you like better? "Change the system," or "Get N or get out"?
If you didn't live through the late 90s but are curious as to what things might've been like, this collection pretty much sums it up.
(Aside from a few clips I've had saved on an old hard drive for years, these were sourced from collections hosted at the Internet Archive.)

I *_"got out"_* as a kid. I was a Sega fan back in the day. But, I still played a lot of Nintendo games, as well.
*_"Get N or Get Out!"_* sounds (to me, at least) kinda like Nintendo was saying, *_"If you can't handle the N64, then GTFO!"_*
*_"Change the System"_* sounds more like ( 😑 *_"Brave gamer, with that controller YOU hold in YOUR hand. You have the power to change not just the game itself..., but the SYSTEM."_* ). It's a better slogan.

Ultra nostalgia
Don't get me wrong, the 90s were a great decade, I just didn't like the crazy censorship in cartoons and video games because many Americans got away with the wrong assumption which is what led to many things getting censored when localized in English back in the day. Princess Daisy didn't appear much in video games during the '90s because she looked too similar to Peach in her first appearance, many people didn't realize she was a different character in the first place. During the 90s' many people didn't know that Daisy and Peach are different characters only because their classic designs looked too similar to each other.
Same Here. Especially DK64, SM64, MK64, Kirby, & Hey You, Pikachu.

That Smash Bros. commercial is still my favorite Nintendo commercial ever made. Whoever created that was an advertising genius. Either that, or they just knew my secret desire of wanting to see Pikachu get abused, since I was working at a GameStop at the time in 1999, early in the Pokemon craze, and most of our sales and calls were about Pokemon goods.
I gave a trivia question based on the first commercial to a man doing anime convention game shows: "In a memorable commercial for Super Smash Brothers for the N64, who sang the opening song: the Beatles, the Rascals, or the Turtles?" (The Turtles, who did "Happy Together").
Even though I was super into *_Pokémon_* when it came out, its enormous popularity did annoy me all the time.
The thing that easily takes me back to that is the *_"South Park"_* episode with *_Chinpokomon_* ( *_"It's Super Toy No.1"_* ).
@@Dorian_Scott I happened to be taping South Park at that time, since I was working nights at GameStop. Let me tell you, that episode was the talk of the store when it aired, and I lent that tape out to so many of the other employees who were equally tired of the whole Pokemon craze by that point.

I quote that Mario milk commercial to this day. It had to have been my favorite commercial back then
I thank you for allowing me to revisit 30 minutes of my childhood, the ones I remember the most were the _Perfect Dark_ , _Smash Bros._ and Mario milk commercials, but you also activated my brain cells with nostalgia with some other great ones, like _Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards_ .
There is a mod for Mario 64 that adds a milk power-up that makes him grow and plays the music from the commercial…
That smash bros commercial gets me everytime. I remember the first time i saw it. I was doing my homework in kitchen while my mom was watching tv. This commercial aired and i just heard my mom loud laughter and noticed it was a smash bros commercial
Growing up makes you realize how lucky you had it as a kid. I couldn’t imagine seeing me and three people excited for a Goldeneye, Mario Kart 64 or Turok 2 game session nowadays, but back then, those were the norm on the weekends.
Dude tell me about it. I remember when my friends would come over, and me and one of my friends were facing head to head in Pokemon Stadium. He was Mewtwo and I was Arcturo (the blue bird). I kept freezing him and he couldn't do anything, so out of frustration he shut the system off haha. Good times. 😂
I remeber sitting in homeroom at 13 years old and seeing the commerical for Super Smash Bros on Channel 1 News lol was so excited to see it in that environment.

That Smash bros. commercial is one of the greatest ads of all time, without question. It could've been an ad during the Super Bowl.

The guy at 11:08 was on an episode of The Office. When I saw him on there I was like "hey it's the car couch guy from that n64 commercial!" 😂

Fun fact one of my college professors actually apart of the crew from the smash 64 commercial. He has a framed photo with everyone in the mascot suits. What a great picture

I was only born in late December 3 1992! Then finally got a N64 for my 31st birthday this year in years! So glad I did!
The nostalgia of watching these commercials makes me even more proud to be a collector for the system. This is still my favorite console to play.

(17:50) is the most nostalgic of them all. Exactly the commercial I was looking for… the floating screen showing vast genre of n64 games. I was in awe of that commercial. I wanted to see more. That’s very effective advertisement. Unfortunately this commercial didn’t air much, I believe I only saw it twice but loved it both times. “Man this thing goes on forever.” Yeah it had me as a 11 yr old.
We need an N64 classic edition mini console asap

I love the N64 But people say the Controllers don’t age well and they do have a Point because the joystick is pone to eroding and becoming loose and unresponsive
Yeah, the sticks on most of my N64 controllers are verging on death too.
I always hated the analog stick on the N64 controller. It really doesn't take long for it to be loose.
The quickest way to despise it entirely, is to play *_"Mario Party 2"_* (... The Japanese version). _Past Me_ still has painful memories of all of those minigames.
Yeah, people hated the analog stick. I have two controllers with broken ones.
And not to mention because of this they forced people to buy more controllers but they decided to sell replacement joysticks because of this but it’s difficult to do making that option unless you know what your doing completely pointless

Video game companies that went out of business were in their prime in the 90s. Midway, Hudson Soft, THQ, lots of companies
Now this is MY Nintendo, not the modern day boring overly PC, family friendly times of Wii & Switch Nintendo. The late 90's to mid 00's were the greatest time for gaming.

The only ones you missed are Banjo-Kazooie, Banjo-Tooie, Jet Force Gemini, Conker's Bad Fur Day, Pokemon Stadium 2, Pokemon Puzzle League, Bomberman 64, Rampage World Tour, Mischief Makers, Toy Story 2, and Spiderman (2000).
A lot of Nintendo 64 games I never seen. What I don't like about most of these commercials is it isn't showing enough gameplay. Not sure if it attracts more sales back then but I guess it doesn't matter too much since super mario 64 was the start of a 3D revolution for gaming.
Mario Got Milk commercial was the first n64 commercial I saw and that’s what led to the best childhood video game memories

I'm really hoping we get most of the old library back over time! I realize I played most of these games shown as a kid, but never actually beat them and trying to go back to a 64 controller was actually torture after the rise of dual analog sticks lol

Funny, did anyone notice at 16:02 at the house party they are playing on a flat screen TV, which didn't exist in households at the time and the N64 isn't even designed to play on those screens without an upscaler/converter.

The last commercial, which is Ocarina of Time, was the only one that was serious unlike the rest of the commercials which are wacky and bombastic.

The N64 commercials don't really mean much anymore, because the games and the system itself are quite obsolete, but it is nice to look back at the old history of Nintendo's prime days with cheesy promotions. Most of the games here, I still own and beaten to this day.

Most of these commercials likely aired on kids networks such as Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network, and the various Saturday Morning Blocks such as Fox Kids and Kids WB. Absolutely not Perfect Dark tho. I wonder what sort of networks that commercial aired on?
