Fantastic videos Jon! No nonsense, just technical, insightful, and meaningful step by step tutorials on working with arrangements and sound. Please keep them coming!
I just finished an exercise in writing a Vangelis-style trailer. I was struggling with managing growly but bass-saturated synth pads. Volume and panning weren’t getting me to clarity and maximum impact. Removing a layer wasn’t an option. I introduced Channel EQ and it did help, but I wasn’t fully understanding the forces at play. The simple concept of competing bass frequencies - the right framing - was an epiphany. I now have a way to sort this out. Thank you! Again! I nominate Jono for Logic Pro Teacher of the Year. Cheers!
Agree with other commenters. Your tutorials are awesome. Learned more in last hour on your channel than several days on other channels. More please! Keep up the great work!
Hey Jono, happy new year and looking forward to more great tutorials! Being a bass player, this was such a cool video, quite a lot going on to get that bass sounding nice and clean, but you have given me so much to look into on my recordings and I can now, with much more confidence get it right for the different types of bass I may use on different genres of music. Thank you so much for such a great tutorial as always.
so i finally understood side chain! there is a lot of situations where i need to make one setting or plug in mirror or respond to other systematically. Automation for example, how to couple automation? So if you have more on this i am more than thankful!

@@MusicTechOfficial (Jono) a good tutorial on Mid/Sides EQing/Compressing, mixing, 3rd party plugins versus stock plugins for various task, summing, effects in electronic dance music could be a hit. Cheers.

THat's the clearest description of mixing the bass I've come across. You mentioned at the beginning that the other approach to mixing the bass with the kick is to give the bass the priority-do you have an example of when you would do that?
Brilliant tutorial ! well explained. I just have one question. If the synth bass in your example was to play more than one note in a sequence (which causes the frequency wave in the EQ to shift), would further EQ reduction in the low end then be required ? I ask this because when I have tried doing this myself, but I notice that other notes the synth bass plays end up sounding louder/boomier than the one at 60hz, due to the frequency of the new notes no longer being at the 60hz spot ? If that makes sense.
Hi Ryan. Many thanks. It does make sense and the short answer is yes, depending on the tone of your chosen bass sound, you may well need to EQ each note/frequency carefully, if you're looking for ultimate precision. I think it’s a great idea to mix with your eyes since many speakers and rooms hide certain elements. I love logics analysis tools.
