As a musician, I find this fascinating. Even though the sound quality isn't perfect, I could listen to this and in some ways I like it better than original key. It just shows how major to minor changes everything. These songs are like alternate universe versions. There is a certain genius to what Mr Berg is doing here. I imagine using Melodyne to rework these songs wasn't easy to do. Looking forward to other strange key work songs.
I completely agree. Many commentators here say they find it depressing. I find it intriguing, quizzical. Much more interesting than the original key. The chord progressions are much less predictable and leave me guessing what the next note will be. I’d love to hear more reworked songs. Wonderful!

If you are a GenXer who grew up hearing this song 3-5X a day in 1987 when you were like 15 or 16, you know this just ain't right. I was mildly relieved to hear that first wicked, falsetto "take" at 1:09 in the proper key - it helped to somewhat restore my blown equilibrium.
I think this song is a good candidate for a song in locrian. The original had a significant dorian element with a lot of focus on the supertonic. When shifted down to the minor key, these elements manifest as locrian. You can hear the locrian tritone especially in the main riff of the song (that comes in at 0:17).
I feel like if I was at a party and someone slipped someone into my drink. And slowly the room started spinning as everyone start staring and laughing at me. And suddenly the room is getting darker and more sinister. But I won't knock out- I'm just stuck in this loop as Take On Me is playing in the background but slowly gets more and more distorted and dangerous. Then I wake up is the forest with people coming after me. The music is still playing as I slowly run away, farther and farther away from the party. Then the music fades into the distance now that I'm safe.
I know it's been 2 years, but I just wanted to say that it sounds weird at the start because the song starts on the II chord naturally, which would normally be in Minor if the songs key is in Major, but when swapped to Minor, the II chord becomes diminished, making it a very dissonant (unpleasant to the ears) sound. Although it's not a chord playing, it's technically an arpeggiated B diminished chord, rather than what you normally hear; an arpeggiated B minor chord.
This gives me the impression that the singer is fighting, keeping himself reassured with thoughts of getting back to his loved one, but in his heart he knows he's completely outmatched and is not going to get out alive.

In the case of this, Don’t Stop Me Now, and The Lion Sleeps Tonight, the minor key has turned them into evil villain anthems. In the case of Country Roads, it has turned the song into absolute hell to listen to.
