- This is the recipe for Love's BBQ's famous BBQ beans. I did this recipe on my lonestargrillz.com/ pellet smoker, but in a pinch you can use a crock pot! Please find the recipe and instructions below.
30 oz PINTO beans (2 cans drained)
15 oz tomato puree (I used Hunts)
1.5 cups Brown Sugar (I used Organic)
1 Tsp Salt
½ Tsp Garlic Powder
½ Tsp Onion Powder
½ Tsp Black Pepper
¼ Tsp Nutmeg
¼ Tsp Cumin
1 Tbs Ground Rosemary (Amazon if you can't find it)
Mix this all up in a pot, then layer the top with about 1 pound of ground pork trimmings, and do not mix them in yet. Place it in your pit running at 225ºF (Love's used oak). After 3-4 hours, mix the trimmings into the beans. I did 3 hours. Let them cool, then put them in the fridge to "marinate". Heat up the beans the next day, and you will taste Love's Famous Beans just like they served up to hungry customers! Excess fat can be blotted up a bit if necessary, but the rendered pork fat is one of the secrets of this classic recipe!

It’s like being a kid on Christmas morning, when you reconnect with a taste of the past that you thought was gone forever, isn’t it? I’ve got to try that one. Thanks for sharing that recipe and the story behind it!
It's not unusual for the beans to be my favorite dish at a good BBQ spot. I often order extra to take home.
Perfect time to get a bbq bean recipe going into spring/summer grilling and smoking season. Thanks Greg! 👍
Makes me think of Blazing Saddles! LOL!
I'm always looking for a good bean recipe and this look amazing. I will give it a try Greg.
Great looking cast iron pot. Beans looked good too
I used to go there as a kid.
I didn't really care for beans as a kid, but recipes like this made me really appreciate the flavor and texture they can provide. Nice cook Greg!
Yes the amazing texture is a plus.
We had a Love's here in Chula Vista. I MISS LOVE'S!!!!!!
This bean recipe is spot on. I made them yesterday, and they taste exactly like what Love's beans were back in the 70's and through the 80's. There are so many copycat recipes that are just not right out there. Thanks for this great video!
Thank you for the feedback. Yeah! This recipe brings back great memories for me!
I love a good smoked beans video. This looks really killer. Thanks Greg!!!
"Love" this recipe Greg! Something new to add to my side apps. BBQ here has some differences compared to US, but I try to convince the locals by doing cooks for large events. Bodas, quinceañeras, cumpleaños etc. I have been a long time subcriber and your recipes and cooks have helped me tremendously. Cheers from the Yucatán Península.
OMG!!!! This was the holy grail of bake beans. I grew up eating these at that restaurant This is so cool. Do you think you can find the recipes for other items on their menu?
Check out my Love's playlist. I did the ribs and chicken. The most recent rib video is the culmination of people that worked at Love's emailing me.
@BallisticBBQ Hi can you please make their cheesebread? It was my favorite as a kid. Thank you!
Can't wait to try this. That is so cool you were able to get the actual recipe for these beans. Cheers!
It's easy to see on your face how much this recipe means to you, thanks so much for sharing it. Now it will live on!
Wow!
Your a God send ....I have been craving these beans for over 20 years! Thank you!! 🙏😎
Wow! Heart attack beans!
There are two restaurants I visit that have really good bbq beans. There pretty different in flavor and in how they're made but I really like them both. I'm going to give this a try.
Michael thank you!! Greg I love when you upload. It gives me that nostalgia feeling of what RUclips used to be. Awesome video brother. I'm definitely making these!!!
I used to go there when I was stationed on the west coast
As a British person who loves beans on toast I feel this maybe the upgrade I've been looking for 😎
BBQ baked beans on garlic toast is amazing
I made these yesterday. Chowed down on these today. They live up to your billing. Best BBQ beans ever.
Hey Greg. Looks delicious.
Hey man. You got a lot of grills. What about a video tour of all your grills, pros and cons. Your fav, etc.
When you're in Love's, the whole world's delicious.
Thanks for this Greg. I'm thinking add hotdogs!
I did your love's chicken, and it was amazing. Now I have a side dish.
Really great video! Dried rosemary...interesting. Cant wait to try it! 👍👍
Looks amazing!! I can only imagine how great your 4th of July cookouts are. 👍
Thank Ray!
They still have a website running to sell sauce.
I grew up eating at three restaurants that are no longer in orange county Love’s Chris and Pitts and bobs big boy thankfully Chris and Pitts is still in LA County I’m making these beans
Great recipe and thank you so much for sharing this recipe 👍👍👍
Yess! How I remember these! I made them today with smoked bacon to served tomorrow. Thank you.
THANK YOU FOR DOING A LOVES PLAYLIST!
I look forward to a video (hoping) on Loves Beef Ribs! If my memory is correct, they were different than their pork ribs. Perhaps there was point were they were grilled after smoked?! Ha ha it’s been so long, I just miss them!
this is great! I do something similar. I add Jack, applesauce and a little BBQ sauce to mine. Put them under pork when I smoke them. Thanks for sharing.
Yummy!
Making today , any one who claims they are Life Changing i am in the whole Hog ...Had to cook the Beans( no tinned Pinto in Australia that i can find) from scratch and used mace instead of nutmeg . every thing else is exactly, well chunks about 1/2 inch square belly pork in from the start .In the smoker . i may have added table spoon more brown sugar ..I bought and spent the last 3 days seasoning a brand new cast iron 9 quart dutch oven for this recipe . Thanks GREG! Going to give this a spin next weekend!
Very different from the Love’s Copycat versions you can find online. Going to try your recipe! Thanks!
Lots of bogus copycat Loves recipes. This one is near spot on.
@@Dive-Bar-Casanova thanks! Even more reason to try this one!
Fantastic
Wow Greg, I remember Love’s now we have go to BBQ beans. Thanks brother 😋
I'm going to get these ingredients and try this, thanks for the recipe.
my god this has to be amazing
I remember how good they were. Also, I remember Loves used a small sized Pinto bean. You may have to soak from raw to get that too. Canned beans are twice the size.
Have make these because right now 17th street makes the best beans I've ever had. Let the contest begin lol
The oldest Chris n Pitts just closed last month 😢 ..love nostalgia videos.
The one in Downey? That sucks!!! Thanks for watching!
@@BallisticBBQ The Whittier location
@@ThrashTillDeth83 Thank you. I looked that up after I read your comment. I have never been to a Chris Pitts, but the Bellflower location has long been on my list, mainly based on how cool that place looks. I'll pick up the pace and go there this month in case they close it too.
Whittier closed down because of a fire. Downey and Bellflower are still open! The best beef ribs.
Very nice looking beans. Cheers, Greg! 👍👍✌️
Really a great bean recipe Greg! Cheers.
I once worked at a restaurant that was under the corporate empire that included cocos, They hosted a party for the managers and they had BBQ beans that tasted like LOVES beans, turns out Dick Love (part of LoVE family) worked as a manager, and made them for the party. The Valley Ranch in Van Nuys had a similar recipe. I used to frequent the Woodland Hills Love location.
I'll bet a little brisket meat would set that off bigtime!
These look really good
Thank you for watching. They're really good!
Looks delish!
It is! Thank you for watching!
Thank you for another great video
Thank you for watching James.
My wife and I frequently went to Love’s in West Covina before they closed down that was a very sad day. Thanks for sharing this recipe.
Thanks for watching. Yeah... I was going there as a young child and as a married adult. The company still exists and I'd love to see them come back.
Love your videos, Greg - All The Best from over here in Bristol, UK ! As usual, I'll be trying this recipe once I've cut it down to in size to match our usual UK portion sizes !! Great tips re the meat (fat!) and the rosemary powder - thanks. Over here, I always cook ratatouille the day before I need it - it tastes so much better after cooling and just sitting for 24 hours - so good, in fact I often eat it cold !!
Thanks Greg - As RVers, "weenies and beans" are a staple. - This looks like a great alternate recipe to try. - Cheers!
I remember going to Love's they were great. And going to Chris & Pitts, another great bbq place.
wowwwwww my friend , this is amazing recipe ! definitely thats something I will try
I made this for our grad party and it was well received!
I've never had a pot of beans that wasn't better the next day, definitely going to try this recipe...Thanks For Sharing.
Thanks Michael! Cheers!
Nice recipe❤
I like how easy and good this recipe is! Finally, I have one! Thanks! I replaced the pork with brisket trimming, and it turned out perfect!
Nice! I had actually intended on doing a pork and brisket blend in this video, but I just rolled with pork. I'm going to try brisket next time. Glad you like the recipe!
@@BallisticBBQ I rendered the fat to tallow I've put some. and smoked the trimming till 170 and chopped it and put it in beans. it's a treat when you get a bite of the brisket. Totally recommend trying it. Thank you again 🙏🏼
@@Qatar87 100% I'll give it a go.
Currently have these on the pit!!
I miss Loves. The chain sold and the quality changed and of course out of business. Everything on the menu was amazing and like no other. We’re trying to figure out the Loves coleslaw and know one ingredient was powdered Rye. Still at it.
There is a big, aching hole in my heart for Love’s. I used to go to the location in Woodland Hills, and I miss that place so much! Thank you, Greg, I deeply appreciate your effort in tracking down and recreating this recipe. I have one question for you though; if I recall correctly, Love’s used pickling spice in preparing their BBQ beans. Am I recalling incorrectly, or was there some adjustment from the original recipe?
Damn That looks insanely delicious.. Definitely gonna give it a bash.
Loves was my favorite growing up in Orange. When they closed we went to Chris and Pitts!
love me some sweet and smoky beans! Wife and I like to make slow cooker chili and I guarantee it's always better the next day, especially if you heat it back up in the slow cooker!
Crockpot with a little liquid smoke? Would that work?
Nice!!
Thank you, Martin!
@@BallisticBBQ would love to talk about GasStop with you.
Wow!!! I just made this recipe and it tastes amazing. I’m curious as to what it’s going to taste like tomorrow once they’re reheated.
wow I didnt think anyone remebered Loves. It was such a great place back in the day. I used to go to the one they had near the BH area. Another one I dearly miss is Mr. Cecil's bbq. Not sure if you know or remember it.
Just give me a bowl, and I'll go away.
Love your Channel Greg. Made the beans and they were delicious. Personally, I would probably do 1 cup of brown sugar next time.
They do look great and my beans alway seem to be lacking in something.I Live the Uk with probably the only LSG pellet here and I’m going to try them this Saturday at our bonfire night party. Thanks for sharing this.
Nutmeg, cumin and rosemary that will be the little something to keep em guessing. I will be trying this shortly. They will cook under the ribs nicely.
Moving forward, that's going to be my plan. Add a bit more lean initially, then allow these to cook under whatever is on the pit. Cheers, David!
Now THAT is some pork and beans!
Porky heaven!
@@BallisticBBQ I will definitely make that recipe. Thank you!
I used to go to the Love's in Woodland Hills or Calabasas. Great food and yes the beans were awesome. I've heard that they may be making a comeback!
I know that they still have a website and are selling sauce. There is a tab to inquire about opening a franchise, but I don't know of any actual open restaurants. If you find out let me know!
@@BallisticBBQ Will do Greg 👍
@@BallisticBBQ: Hey Greg what about the pickling spice?? I am pretty sure I remember seeing seeds in Love's beans. And in one of your attempts at reproducing them (a few months ago) you DID use pickling spice. You didn't miss it, or not notice a difference, or what?
Man I love my Grilla OG smoker but boy I'd love to have that Lone Star!
Hey brother, this is a bean recipe that I think I could get into. A lot of the other homemade barbecue bean recipes. Just take too darn long. I’ll be giving this a try on my Lonestar as well. Blessings to you and the family. We will talk soon.
Thank you Brother-Mike! Cheers, to you and yours.
Thank you for this Love's BBQ bean recipe. It is very good, but after using all the listed ingredients along with your instructions I thought it was missing that tang of vinegar. So I added a little apple cider vinegar and that made it taste as I remembered. I have been trying to copy the original Love's BBQ bean recipe for several years and before Love's closed. I used my wood smoker and added some BBQ beef brisket trimmings along with the chopped pork and fat. Love's BBQ beans always had some type of texture in with the beens so some of my recipe attempts included ground pickling spices. Think I will include that next time I do your recipe along with some apple cider vinegar.
Thank you for the comment! How much vinegar did you add?
@@BallisticBBQ Just a little to taste.
Hey Greg, I made it. Is it supposed to be this sweet? The sugar overpowers everything. I've never had the original.
If they taste practically like candy, you're on the right track!
@@wired525 Thanks for the info. Maybe it's not for me then.
Great that you got the recipe from a viewer, Greg! I've been looking for a good baked beans recipe. Olga and I don't like things too sweet, so what do you think of using just 0.5 cup of brown sugar?
I'm sure it would still be good, it just wouldn't be the true "Love's" recipe. This being said, this blend of spices really sets these beans apart from others that I have had.
You want some good beans? I made some smoked pinto beans in my Ugly Drum Smoker during a brisket smoke. I soaked the dried beans overnight in water, then rinsed and put into a foil tray and covered with water, plus a couple inches. Add seasonings to your particular taste - I always cube up some salt pork for my beans along with some chopped onions. Now, I have a double grate in my smoker, so I put the beans in the tray above the fire basket then put the brisket above the beans. All the drippings from the brisket go into the beans- which also means whatever rub you used gets carried into them. Whenever you check the brisket, check the water level in the beans and add as necessary. When the brisket hits your wrap temp - around 170 internal, cover the beans with foil as well - taste them, as they are probably done, but it doesn't hurt to let them bake more.
This was a huge hit at a 4th of July family get together. There were no leftover beans, even though there was leftover brisket.
Those beans sound pretty f'n amazing. What kind of pellets did you use?
Sup Greg, way different than mine in a good way I think lol, took a snapshot, don't have my smoker, I can eat beans, so try in crockpot? I'm sure will be great👍, let you know, tyvm tc 🍔🥩
By chance anyone provide their French salad dressing recipe? Love's was great back in the day no doubt!
Where can I find a printable version of this recipe
Still waiting on LSG v Yoder shoot-out.
Loves is still around, they have truck stops all over the US, not sure if it's the same but their logo looks like it.
That's a totally different Love's, not related.
I just made these for tomorrows BBQ. I only used 1/3 of the sugar, and ground the cumin and the rosemary in a mortar which went fast and easy. The kitchen smells absolutely fantastic and it is a new and interesting aroma! I hope the wife and kids hate them so I can have them all.
Well received here. To me, the rosemary was overpowering. I'd go with less next time. Even looked back to see if I had read the recipe wrong. We had ground pork from the store that was only 10 % fat. I mixed it about half/half with lard. Thanks for providing it.
I want to make this recipe for our weekend. I want to double the recipe. Can I double all the ingredients and get same results
Table clothes and finger bowls!
I remember their cheese bread
can I use an instapot?
I'm sure you could, but I can't give advise on times and things like that. I don't own an instapot.
4:42 that’s what she said
Don't have a smoker can I bake them in an oven?
what about mac and cheese
Would finely chopped bacon work as a substitute?
It would work, but it wouldn't be quite the same. I would rather use a very finely chopped pork loin or something.
Wouldn't pork loin be too lean? Did you maybe mean pork belly?@@BallisticBBQ
