Excellent gross science! Back in the early 90's, I was in the Peace Corps, and one of our main projects was working on guinea worm eradication. Hell, Jimmy Carter even came & visited our post in Mauritania, and we got to sit down with the man & have dinner with him. Carter's organization is single-handedly responsible for the wide-spread awareness of this disease, and for its eradication. Carter even went to Sudan, got both sides to agree to a guinea worm eradication plan - they agreed on nothing else, other than killing each other, but the warlords agreed on this. It was called the "Guinea Worm Ceasefire," and it's the longest on record.
Wow from 3 million to 126 cases is astonishing!!! Proof that education and awareness is key! I will have to check in on the status of these little critters over the next few years to see if they have indeed become extinct.
I wonder what would happen if I got infected. I'm an amputee so the worm would face a 50-50 chance of ending up in a leg that does not end in a foot. Having had my share of painful blisters on my stump, I can't imagine what this would like.
My question is this... If the worm is eradicated (which we all think would be good) is this worm the water fleas main source of food? Then, will the water fleas also start to die? Then, I am curious what eats the water fleas? Will losing one part of the food chain essentially cause more damage than we realize?
The food chain is huge, most things eat several different things. Example, if cows were to go extinct, we still have pigs and plants and other animals.
The larva don’t die when eaten by the water fleas they live inside until humans drive the water with fleas, do you want people to have these gross worms in them to save the planet)
The worm has pulled out some tricks though, it started jumping to dogs, which was a surprise but some countermeasures were quickly put up. But it does bring up the question if the parasite was able to extend its reach from its main host species in a fairly short period of time, has that extension reached further then that as the species itself is now under pressure.
When we went to New Hampshire I was drinking water out of the lake and my mom said you’ll get mosquitoes in your stomach so I drink one more gulp then I was done. A couple days later I was fine no mosquito babies no guinea worms no baby guinea worms nothing I was completely OK
hey, just thought of a subject for your exploration: why do earthworms appear during the rain? moreso, why do they retract in their holes when light is shun onto them?
What kind of impact on the non-human parts of the environment would we expect from the eradication (is extinction appropriate here?) of these nematodes? I'm always curious about how important an individual species is to their ecology.
In the video she said that the females can reach up to three feet long and they need to be extracted carefully in order to avoid breaking them. Most people are under 6 feet tall which means that these worms can be over half their host's length. It's not surprising that it takes a long time to extract them.
rodentlover100 Which means that they are a very new species, as humans have not been around for long... or they were previously capable of infecting other, now extinct or immune hosts.
how can removing a worm take weeks if you cant break it, do you just do your life with a worm hanging out of your foot when you wait for your doctor to come back or something? XD ~confused individual
Nearly all complete parasites are useless to the food web iirc. Half-parasites like mosquitos or bot flies aren't useless because they're food for lots of other animal species but guinea worms for example are completely useless, because between humans and them, the only other animal involved is the water flea, and the water fleas don't need guinea worm larvae to survive.
You were not kidding.
Also: Hi, Anna! :D
Save the Guinea worm!
PBS Idea Channel Hi Mike! And yeah... when I say gross, I mean gross.
***** The best way you can save them is to allow one to live in your body. You're OK with that, right? ;)
Denis Lafontaine anything for a worm! ;)
Excellent gross science!

Cool!
+earthwulf murderer !!!! how could you sir , you're just as bad as cecil the lion killer .........SAVE THE WORM !!!!! SWALLOW A WATER FLEA !!
James Hyman swallow a water flea WITHOUT the genea worm XD
COOOLLLL
also eww

@@anastasiabirde8800 Darn found my new account which I abandoned and went to my old account.. (this one..)
That must’ve burned🔥

That's some horror movie stuff right there.
Great video by the way, fun for the whole family.
I'm still waiting on that extinction, April 2019

cheyanne Glenn The worm larvae are not food for the water fleas, water fleas are the intermediate host for the worm.

Considering 99% of all species that have ever existed are now extinct and life still exists I don’t think I am concerned, at all.
both you and Joe are amazing. It would be great also if there are others who explain natural physics like you two do in molecular biology
Number of cases in 2021 to date (sept 7th) is 5. There have been 4 cases reported in Chad and just 1 in Ethiopia.
I appreciate your accurate closed captioning on these very interesting videos.
Yeah v interesting seahorse duck which we're going to dismiss? As the huge thick worm is broken? What a front 👽

It is hilarious how she speaks of all these gross facts with such a big smile that never falters.
Scary. Scary. And very entertaining.
yay no more nightmare fuel worms
no more nightmare fuel worms you are aware of infecting you. Got it
@@zawsrdtygbhjimokpl6998 this is the most terrifying response I've ever gotten
Broken thick dragon worm had a seahorse behind it but in reality it's a duck with a right arm behind which has become a Very interesting back
WW3 should be Humans (and all hot-blooded mammals) Vs Mosquitoes. Those damn pests cause so much death indirectly.
You re doing great! Please make a video about Loxothylacus panopaei! #best_parasite_EVER. Keep up the good work ! :D
paprikasama Thank you! And I might just have some L. panopaei coming your way soon... ;)
paprikasama Hey there! Here's video on Loxothylacus, as requested: ruclips.net/video/rQdfBfqHnLs/видео.html
Enjoy!
its a shame that this channel doesnt make new videos anymore :(
... I have a blister on my foot and I'm now panicing
These videos are so underrated
Imagine that while your watching this your foot started to itch..
i have a question so please answer this question, gross science. do the worms just travel into your foot or do they also travel around your body?
+AgarGaming 2044 Well, since Gross Science hasn't answered you yet:
They travel into your stomach, then your intestine and then out your foot. :)
I'm gonna need a bucket for this one..
the worm’s little face was so cute XD
Oh look. The symbol of medicine is getting extinct
First time I've seen you and you've got my sub!
When we went to New Hampshire I was drinking water out of the lake and my mom said you’ll get mosquitoes in your stomach so I drink one more gulp then I was done. A couple days later I was fine no mosquito babies no guinea worms no baby guinea worms nothing I was completely OK
I’m pretty sure it’s been fully eradicated
This was made exactly 2 years ago
My cousin is from Africa and she had the disease and she said it was the worst thing in her life
If only we could similarly drive hookworm to extinction, the world would be a much better place for all.
Tough critters to survive a stomach. I wonder how they do it.
well its been 4 years now so... i hope they're gone or at least nearly impossible to get.
Now that it's 2016? Is it eliminated yet? or will it be take another few years what's your opinion anna?!
hey, just thought of a subject for your exploration: why do earthworms appear during the rain? moreso, why do they retract in their holes when light is shun onto them?
That one is easy. Their holes get full of water and they crawl out to avoid drowning.
What kind of impact on the non-human parts of the environment would we expect from the eradication (is extinction appropriate here?) of these nematodes? I'm always curious about how important an individual species is to their ecology.
How do the guinea worms survive your stomach acids, but not the fleas?
*Gets a tickling feeling in feet*
Guinea worm affects many in the west coast of India. It's locally known as Naaruu.
If your only reproductive host is smart enough to avoid infection, you are doomed.
why is it so painful when the worm comes out and how could it take weeks for it to come out is it because of the hooks or barbs on them ?
In the video she said that the females can reach up to three feet long and they need to be extracted carefully in order to avoid breaking them. Most people are under 6 feet tall which means that these worms can be over half their host's length. It's not surprising that it takes a long time to extract them.
are patients hooked up to a slowly rotating machine for some weeks then...?
but waterfleas are pretty big HOW WOULD YOU NOT NOTICE
how does that flimsy little thing digs through muscle and fat tissues?? unbelievable all the way to your hands or feet.
I was watching this while eating and now I’m scared to drink water
its over this year
Who’s here after the channel is gone
"hello llama"
I have a question! How to eliminate some worms that took control of institutions of our country here in Brazil?
"Hello, lover.." Lol
lol
That's an NTD.
They normally wrap around your leg bone. Ikr, ew.

I need to stop eating when I watch your vids.
These worms are endangered now we need to protect them
After every video I go in the corner and make a barf noise. This time I nearly actually barfed. BLAH
Nice, but kind of lame to not give The Carter Center credit in the video. They have been working on this for years.
im gonna call dragons worms now
Those dang nematodes!
i thought the first disease to get eradicated was small pox
It's fine, didn't want to leave my house anyway, everything is fine
I told you pick your “friends" wisely. But we like to learn the hard way like always

I just ate.
why cant they live in other animals? or will thy adapt.
Soooooo, drink juice instead?
WHAT THE WORM!?!?!?!?!?!?!?
"Hello lova"😂😂😂😂
*Im afraid of water now*
Wait, so the worms are a recent evolution if they only have human parasites or did they have other hosts that went extinct?
+MegaMementoMori They only live in humans. Other animals have powerful defenses against them.
rodentlover100
Which means that they are a very new species, as humans have not been around for long... or they were previously capable of infecting other, now extinct or immune hosts.
+MegaMementoMori they probably found early hominids an easy target, and then it evolved with us.
***** Makes logical sense.
Dragons....slain.
Best ending evaaaaa
Hahaha
(But I'm against complete extinction, perhaps it should be somehow preserved for future scientific research & discoveries)
The first parasite to be eradicated? What about the pubic louse?
Why do i always eat food when i watch these videos?
wtf the quality of the videos tho
Are they dead? PLEASE SAY THEY ARE
It Dosent Fly :(
eat fermented and spicy food to rid your insides of worms and stuff..

ok, that's enough internet for today...
The guinea worms may have an important ecological niche
Xavier Mahele I'm sure they don't, or else the eradication attempts wouldn't be happening to the same extent.
Nearly all complete parasites are useless to the food web iirc.

Oh hell no
thanks
Isn't the human flea also extinct? I think these days we get fleas that have evolved to live of other animals biting us for a change of diet.
