  • Join me for the final checks and pull of my 2021 marten trapline. Had my best check day of the season, as well as some long slow ones. Covered lots of ground, had fun, learned new things and hopefully became a slightly better trapper. Enjoy!

    Great video as a marten trapper my self I was spanking em this season but after listening to the for cast and no live auction I elected to pull my north line and trap closer to home. Fuel prices on the rise and fur prices too low oh well I will still get a few more marten yet cheers !Great work

    That’s some really nice fur. The marten are light but the fisher are absolutely beautiful. Those in a normal year are big money. This year I’m not sure how there going to do when it’s all said and done. I know you know. What’s a mature male fisher worth? Thanks for the vid

    • @trappingtoday
      @trappingtoday  2 года назад +1

      Thanks Tom! Yeah we tend to have a lower than average marten here, but our fisher are considered some of the best. The market is still so poor....I'm thinking fishers may average $40 if that, but I'm hoping to get more for mine. I will likely have them tanned.

    Can I ask why do you choose Ground traps for martens instead of Tree traps?

    • @trappingtoday
      @trappingtoday  2 года назад +2

      I catch more on the ground, and we are required to use those boxes, and it takes much more time and effort to mount them to trees, find a tree, etc. Sometimes I put em in trees.

  • @swampwhiteoak1
    @swampwhiteoak1 2 года назад +1

    Consider for next year (unless season dates are a problem) that it might be wise to begin marten trapping at this date when they will be getting hungry. What is your comment?
    Consider applying more patience! Give the line time to work. Give animals time to find the sets.

    • @trappingtoday
      @trappingtoday  2 года назад +2

      Thank you for the suggestions. Couple things to remember: every year is different. Last year I caught 25 marten in the first 14 days of the season. Also, many years we get so much snow in November that you can't get in the woods without a snowmobile and I wouldn't be able to haul all those boxes around. So my motto is, trap when you can. As far as patience, it's more a financial thing. We have to check our traps every 3-5 days and it costs me at least $60 in gas plus vehicle wear and tear each time i run the line. And I have to take a vacation day from work every week I have this line going. Can only lose so much money before deciding it's long enough. If we had a 7 day check I'd likely have run these through to the end of the season.

    • @swampwhiteoak1
      @swampwhiteoak1 Год назад

      Apologies because my intent was not to criticize you and your trapline activities.
      Every person best knows their own trapline circumstances.
      Our traplines will give us a lesson in reality.
      Many characteristics determine the reality of our trapping seasons - weather, animal populations, finances, work, and family obligations.
      Pulling the last traps of the season is always bittersweet.
      As trappers we have the closest relationship with nature, and it is a tremendous privilege.

    • @mikewhitman745
      @mikewhitman745 Год назад

      So your saying marten are only hungry for part of the year? How does that work because I was under the impression they prefer to eat year round?

  • @nickschiavone7330

    Do you have to use that style box in Maine or can you use an open style box.

    • @trappingtoday
      @trappingtoday  2 года назад +1

      Hi Nick, this style box is legally required to trap in order to avoid incidental capture of lynx, which are still listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act, although they now have a healthy and abundant population (long story!)

    Sir, two stupid questions: Are you allowed to cover the trap boxes with pine branches to keep the snow "above" the trap and keep the hole open longer? Are you allowed to set a snare in the rear of the trap to catch the ones that don't want to use the front door? :) Congratulations on your mink! :)

    how much snow do you feel comfortable driving on before switching to snowmobile on those back roads. long walk out

    • @trappingtoday
      @trappingtoday  2 года назад

      Good question Kirsten. If I have to chain up all 4 tires to get around I start pulling traps or get the snowmobile. Very long walk home for sure. I have an inreach, also high lift jack, come a longs and lots of rope/chain. I worry more about the truck breaking down than anything.
