The best shows in philly happen at the first unitarian church
i can confirm this
Now if that isn’t the truest thing ive heard
Why is there so much good bands there?
damn this drummer is an inspiration.
he should be sorta the one and only
Eric Emm has gotta be one of the most underrated bass players I've seen, dude can counterpoint anything Ian does and it fits so perfectly, that tapping section at Afro Pop is just amazing.
0:28 Haven't Lived Afropop
6:48 Slice Where You Live Like Pie
12:22 Let's Face It Pal, You Didn't Need That Eye Surgery
19:22 A Lot Of People Tell Me I Have A Fake British Accent
Damon che is the one that convinced me into having alcoholism
lmao
with Eric Emm on the bass was my favorite lineup of this band
don cab played all their shows in extremely well lit church halls
Ian Williams is magnificent.
this is the one Don Cab video I always come back to. video and audio are fantastic and it makes me feel like i'm in the Church basement. love that room so much. also love watching Ian chomp gum while playing.
Is this church still active?
@@yellowclouds3722 the basement is an active venue, most would say historic at this point. Almost 3 decades of incredible shows spanning all genres. The upstairs church is still active and shows have been held in both the church and sanctuary.
ian williams fueled my bubble gum addiction💔

btw what yr. is that Fender Precision (Mocha) ?
totally agree
@@talpajam Who gives a fuck abou' tha'?
The one and only time I was extremely fortunate (and always grateful) to see this iteration of Don Cab live must've been on this same tour (at Club Modified in Phoenix, for what I feel like was 1999 for the time period between Singles Breaking up and American Don). Anyways got to really briefly meet Ian Williams directly after their set at their merch booth on the way out, and I remember awkwardly asking him what I should buy (as far as their record and CD selection, of course meaning stuff by bands other than Don Caballero that I wasn't at all familiar with), and Williams immediately recommended Damon Che's band Thee Speaking Canaries LP "Life-Like Homes" on Scat records, which was awesome considering it's Che on guitar and vocals. But to witness these guys live was truly an amazing experience...truly one of a kind...Che is a drumming legend.
I'm thinking I caught them too though at the old Knitting Factory in NYC with Holland's The Ex. It was a rather interesting evening
I bought that same album for that same reason on that same tour but in KCMO.
It’s funny hearing that even though Ian and Damon were on the verge of possibly killing each other by the time the band broke up, Ian still respected him as an artist.
@@averyjenson it wasnt really like that, those guys didnt hate each other, they just had clashing personalities. gotta remember that they were in that band for all those years, damon kinda founded it. liken it to the snake the mongoose between damon and ian. i was very lucky to have seen em a lotta times, maybe 10 or 12 times over the years even, in a few different states. they were truly the most amazing band in the world to me, and damon's drumming absolutely exploded my mind as a drummer, ian as a guitarist too.
I'm glad I get reminded monthly through youtube recommendations how fucking phenomenal Don Caballero were.
Still are! Look at Don Cab's RUclips channel, Damon is still ripping it to this day
Thanks. This was shot with one of the first generation Sony Digital 8 Camcorders, TRV103 I believe with a Radio Shack electret condenser mic. The Sony Nightshot mode came in handy a few times. though green as seen in Don Cab 2000 Upstage vid:-)
This is the best day ever, never take it down
"I'm Damon Che... Everytime I play live I have the flu.."
What is it with Ian Williams and playing in bands where the drummer puts their cymbals way too high up
exceptional recording.. the sound was picked up very well
Back in 94 someone said oh you like them guys? Now imagine them /w lyrics. /handed me Tool - Opiate.
(That was in For Respect days mind you)
CD Catalog was all Helmet/Melvins/Fugazi/Quicksand/Starkweather/Naked City/Shudder To Think/LARD
Wow. a few weeks before the end of the real don cab...Pristine recording quality too. That is awesome! thanks for sharing..
That was about a year after this. They didn’t break up until late 2000
Damon Che just looks totally pissed off at all times.
He was drinking a lot back then
I would too If I was their drummer
I can't think why
He was…for the most part.
Anger and intense concentration. I feel like having to follow along with Ian's loops on the spot would wear on anyone
great job!
I like those nice commentary moments where a musician just says something so simple and normal that it's either their voice or the tone or just the simple execution of how they say it makes it kinda cool in my opinion. Someone is bound to yell or laugh or just straight clap or do a ''WOOHOO!''
Thank you so much for uploading.
This is my favourite Don Cab video ever. Thx for posting.
Slice were you live like a pie ♥
I love his small part in "High Fidelity"
jesus, they goddamn don't make 'math' like they used to.
More please!
Thanks a bunch, Its just I am looking for some recorder of this quality and figured something from 1999 might be reasonably priced by now :)
Thank you so much man, my version of American Don didn't have the song :O I've been missing out! Lol
These dudes are a memory of goodness. Too bad they hated each other. We could've had more albums out of them. I guess were lucky to get what we got out of em.
Qué música tan compleja, pero al mismo tiempo divertida de escuchar.
I demand a classic lineup reunion.
Isnt really classic lineup
Think this is one of the first Don Caballero vids that I have found here that is listenable.
the sound you get at first unitarian church is pretty amazing, i dunno if youve ever been to a show there but its a total treat, an even bigger treat to get to play there. ive had so many amazing moments there both seeing shows and playing shows that its kinda surreal that we have this amazing artifact to enjoy forever.
That guitar player is Ian Williams thank you very much.
WHO DISLIKED THIS?
yes!! i can answer you!! six ignorant and useless uneducated individuals
Small brain invertebrates
¡¡¡Más!!!
Kind of looks like Eric Wareheim sitting there by the guitar player.
Totally does .
@@josephwarren3308 Awesome!!
It's confirmed and I still don't believe it No fucking way!
As if Eric wasn't cool enough already
He confirmed via Twitter that it is in fact him
My 4th birthday was on this day!
how does your ego feel like, in that case?
fucking'a man, i could lissten to their playing for hours
1:00 there's my chippy
Back on the Williams days!
That's because it is him.
preslusao sam ga vise puta nego bilo koji njihov album
those crash cymbals might need to be raised up some.
and the snare needs to be lowered, far too high
Math Rock should be the soundtrack for the tv serie "Touch"
Whatever weird sexual tension Damon and Ian had with each other makes for some great playing
Damon was constantly drunk and I think Ian's a bit of a dick so that probably didn't help. Lots of tension and hostility between the two, I think they're still on bad terms to this day and they're both in their 50s.
Oh wow Ian is 50 now
@Jack Wilson From what I read in "The final dark days of Don Caballero" it seemed like Damon was a drunken egomaniac with a short temper. Ian seems like he's pretty egotistical himself and also pretty inconsiderate.
Said in the voice of a teenager that you exclusively hear in any visual media put out by the US in the last 10 years. You know that 'starts high' thing
@@lukerogers151 come on now, don't say something that isn't fully true. Both Ian and Damon talk warmly about each other and their playing to others. Go look at Ian's Instagram and you'll see at least 4 photos of the two of them he shared from the last few months. A lot can happen in 20 years.
as in with what technolog, bc for this to be recorded in 1999 its quite incredible quality and I am interested in purchasing it. The sound comes off great and the video does a fine job as well.
That's "Let's Face it Pal, You Didn't Need That Eye Surgery". The part you're referring to in the video seems to be played a bit differently live than in the album version
eric w. up front what uppppp.
It is
was wondering how did you record this?
Sweet Pythagoras!
Definitely him.
Does anyone know what Ian's pedal chain is for this show? I only recognise the Akai Headrush, and that the yellow pedal is a Danelectro of some sorts.
yeah that is the danelectro daddy´o
First one looks like an AB box (3 cables, 2 switches, no knobs), and that makes sense since he could send all the loops to one amp and use the other one to play on top of it, then once he "gets" another part, he switches to that loop amp for overdubs. Then the next one is of course Headrush E1 -> Roland Footswitch -> Daddy-O -> TU2.
los matematicos de la music
At about 19m, is Che talking about the "gain", or the "gate" on the kick? Sounds fine on this recording :)
this is my birthday
What is the song playing at 15:45?!?!?!?! I listen to Don Cab all the time and can't name this one.
I was looking for K Pop.
Does anybody know what kind of bass that is?
do you really not recognize a Fender P-bass?
Slice Where You Live....
it is Eric is from the philly area
where's the rest?
its probably him! He used to play in indie bands in Philly around this time period
Eric *also* likes Battles, so it probably is him!
two Raymond Babbitts in this band is two too many to survive!!
That les paul must reek of armpit.
I guess your vulgarity may be only matched by your own inability to play guitar
@@Margiempar the Fuck ever.
that was funny and deserves applause.
That's a violin
WHy did they hate each other?
are you from the past ?
on Afropop does Ian set a loop, then 1:17 tune his guitar to another tuning ?
Yessir! He does that for The Peter Criss Jazz too
Sweet Pythagorean Theorem!
does anybody have the setlist for this?

A Lot Of People Tell Me I Have A Fake British Accent
Andrew Deriglazov thanks man
is that eric wareheim in the crowd @0:55 ?
pretty sure it's him
no man that looks like louis theroux sitting there
How do these noises come from humans
Simple answer, they're not human.
des fous
yo is that eric warheim in the background?
Damn looks just like him
Music career
Wareheim played in several Philadelphia area bands, including the new wave punk band Twelve Tone System, of which Tim Heidecker was also briefly a member

Can someone identify his pedals here? I know one is a channel switcher for his amp and I know he's using a looper. Help plsss
Also a danelectro pedal maybe???
The looper is an aki head rush
The Marshall Head is probably a JCM 900, and the Ampeg is confirmed to be an SVT, I feel like those are Ian's essentials anyways, just (several) looper(s) and a bit of crunchy overdrive from the Marshall and sometimes the gain-heavy distortion of the Ampeg. I think the Danelectro you spotted may be a distortion as well, idk
@@BrunoOfCanada it's a danelectro grilled cheese. can't tell you exactly what he'd use it for, but it must be something pretty specific considering that pedal is straight up garbage. but it probably shines somewhere in their discography
@@soundescapemn Late response, ¿but wasn't it used on What Burns and Singles Breaking Up era? There's a live video of him where he's toggling a distortion on and off to create that call-and-response effect in Room Temperature Lounge, as well as the distorted parts in Slice Where You Live Like A Pie. It sounds kinda garbage like the Grilled Cheese, but I dig it.
Let me act like little child:Why?xD
wow the internal tension is too obvious.
All I see are three guys lost in their music. Betting you wouldn't say that if you didn't already know the behind the scenes story. Or are there specific moments you're referring to?
I don't know the "behind the scenes" story, nor was I referring to anything outside of this video. But the part with a steady count at the end during "Haven't Lived Afropop" has Damon Che looking uninterested and annoyed, with Ian Williams's body language indicating that maybe this part of the song had some disagreements. Eric Emm looks disinterested throughout, which is never helpful. Do he and Che ever even make eye contact during this video?
Are you familiar with "asks" in a relationship context? For example, your spouse has cues that they need you to respond to - you don't need to respond to every single one, but enough to signal that you care. These can be verbal or nonverbal. A verbal example is when your significant other says "I love you" - it's a prompt to say "I love you, too." If you leave that initial ask unanswered too often, the person doing the asking can feel less secure.
Asks happen in all sorts of relationships, including bands. Look how often Ian Williams looks toward his bandmates while clearly enjoying himself - they hardly look at him at all.
i noticed this dynamic happens a lot to ian with his current band, battles lmao.
The songs are incredibly difficult to play, which is a better explanation for poor body language and looks of intense consecration than speculating about the internal lives/conflict of the bands members
It goes beyond even just being difficult to play. In Battles and this particular era of Don Caballero, the musicians are following prerecorded elements, whether a loop pedal or preprogrammed sounds or what have you. The band did break up in 2000, but I don't think there is much in this video at all to indicate that that would have been the case.
fuck im from bensalem pa and i love buddy rich but some thin about these guys..
tim and eric are friends of damon.
0:55 Looks like Louis Theroux sitting down next to the stage.
My friend asked me to describe these guys after I saw them the first time. I told him that they were a poor man's King Krimson.
Mark Wilkins who gives a fuck what you told some random dude you arrogant prick 😂
Dad rock worship
never understood why people say this
@@SiliconMolybdenumNitrogen well clearly you cared enough to be insulted and go straight for the as hominem when I was in no way insulting them. I personally liked the presentation hence why I took the time to, you know, check out the video.
@@colevollrath6705 probably b cause when I saw King Krimson they were playing the Warfield in San Francisco and when I saw Don Cabellero it was in one of the rooms at the old Knitting Factory in NYC. That and dude wore his guitar up under his chin like Robert Fripp. And like I told the guy above you it wasn't intended to be an insult. I also had no idea other people had said this.
joey from friends on guitar
looks more like louis theroux
7:04 How the FUCK
Or Louis Theroux
zuckerberg on bass
joey mc Jim Carrey on guitar
who else is sorta confirming their gayness through ian williams?
The funny thing wit Ian is that he's not like, mind-blowingly attractive, but his overall demeanor hits you right in the "holy fuck I'm gay" spot
Fuck, I thought I was the only one
someone could please put a shirt on that drummer, thanks
you'd think with all that drumming that Damon would have a little more upper body tone. flab city.
I love this band and understand their music highlights the drums/drummer,but i really want to see if the guitar player can actually play chords &w/out a looper.😁 Great Band any way.
Listen to Don Caballero 2
Considering he knows what notes to layer over each other, I think this is a bit of a silly question.
Loop pedals don't make you worse, asshole. In fact it probably makes you better if you know how to compile layers of notes at a time AND live.
@@almightyhotdoglady5383 seconding this, using a looper pedal is surprisingly hard cause you have to have really good time or the loop comes out like shit
@mr.nazareth4501 It's ungodly hard to make loops that work melodically AND get them in time during live shows. Even Ian has trouble with timing his loops pretty often. You'll find in a lot of Ian era Don shows, Damon has to readjust to Ian's loops a lot
Looks like Louis Theroux.
They're all frum Phill-e
All from Pittsburgh, actually
