I've known Gary for 12 yrs and based on his recommendation I bought an A77 to use side by side with my Canon 1Ds M2. (I use Canon L glass 90% of the time)
So far it has compared better for auto focus when using the Sony 16-50 F2.8, equal for daylight exposure, and better for dim light exposure. The A77 is more than capable of producing professional images under harsh and varying conditions. Also the Tokina 11-16, F2.8 lens is excellent! Very impressed so far. I highly recommend the A77.

I grabbed one of these used just for the lens that came with it. I have the Sony a 7Sii but really like this camera so I'm going to keep it especially for its 12 frames per second and this camera takes really stunning photos. Every year they come up with different cameras we're so many new features in them that we hardly ever use we tend to get how wonderful the technology was a few years back this camera is going to be used for portraits and high-speed shoots. This camera after so many years is still amazing

I have been in doubt for what model to choose on my new digital SLR. I have read, asked, wachted, researched and compare almost every aspect of the "mid range" cameras and yet had no sure pick, BUT in this video, YOU have been VERY VERY helpful!! I'm getting that camera!
    Thank you very much!!

That was really great, you touched on many things; and introduced me to a lot of stuff. I've got a couple of these A77-1 cameras both with pro bases and I reckon they are so good they can be around for a long time to come. Again thank you.

Apologies if you already know this, but to get around the problem of light from the popup flash when you want to use it to trigger a wireless flash, you can simply cover it with a piece of exposed film, or any kind of IR filter or piece of IR acrylic sheet, etc. Bit of a DIY looking workaround, but it saves having to use that extra flash like the Sony guys suggested. :-)

So excited about this camera, I ordered it yesterday along with the Carl Zeiss 135mm f /1.8, I think it will be a great combination.

    Gary,
Have you been using the A99? I'm on the fence between the A99 and a D800. Your unbiased evaluations go a long way in my book, so I'm wondering what your experiences are with the new Sony full frame?
    Thanks!

I Love my a77 with my Zeiss 24-70 2.8. It is a lifetime companion and it will do the job, always. This is a camera to become a legend and I highly recommend the Nikon and Canon people to check it out. Sony+Minolta=Alpha, what more do we need to say.

When I got this camera, people said that not too many professional use this. I replied, "Good. I'm not a professional." Hmpph. It's the best comeback I could think of at the time. I had this now for 5 weeks and I love it. Everyone has Canon or Nikon, but I chose this because I have some legacy Minolta lenses. It works great with these old lenses. My dad just had it stored in his attic for 20 years. Glad to bring new life to them. But I'm look forward to purchasing the Sigma 1.4 35mm!!

Gary I have the Cowboy studios radio triggers for my A77, they were prettttty damn cheap and have allowed me to do quite a few things I wouldn't have been able to do without. I'll upgrade later when money isn't so tight but they work great, especially for the cost.

  • @SianaGearz

It's often considered in class of mirrorless cameras in spite of it having a mirror in there. I'm sure you know the difference, the SLR is named by its mirror (reflex) which serves the viewfinder, here the viewfinder is not driven by a mirror, and the mirror is only for fast autofocus.

If you want to use your built in flash to trigger off camera Sony speed lights you can set the shutter speed to 1/250. This will allow the flash to remotely sync but the built in flash will not show on your image. Give it a shot!

  • @CGphotoOp

Mr. Fong I own this camera and bought a puffer for it but the puffer doesn't mount on the hot shoe well. It only goes in about a third of the way in. Any idea why and will you come out with a puffer for the Sony SLT DSLRs? Thanks.

  • @seekwekkeg

@anojan001 you are right, it seems he selected high continuous drive mode (8fps) instead of 12 fps speed priority mode on the mode dial.

  • @aFra109
    @aFra109 11 лет назад

I found if you take your shutter speed to 1/200th (high speed sync) wireless, you still need to raise the flash to enter into a flash mode. At 1/200th, your on board camera flash will NOT fire, and only your wireless ttl flash will. (of course at 1/200th, your flashes will be slightly less efficient.) Works (line of sight) about 30ft away :)

1Pixel king and Pixel knight do work with A77! You're wrong about certain things, it's not 21MP, its 24MP( slip of the tongue i believe) And the Camera does have a mirror, but a stationary translucent one. It is not mirrorless! I dont know why you didnt mention other things like IBIS image stabilizing, focus peaking, sweep panorama, Auto HDR, MFNR, PDAF in live view(only camera to have it) smart teleconverter, and other detailed information you get on the OLED EVF, its features and advantages!

@@onzkicg I bought a used A77 (but hardly used, 7.5k shots taken) last fall, ugrading from the A65 (and the A55 before that). I love the camera, especially with the trusty ol' Sigma 17-70 2.8-4.0. Full frame is just so much more expensive I will skip it until my children are out of the house. So, like 15 years. ;-)

Reinhard Scheibe Thanks! I got a77v too, and yes I’m glad I did. Thanks for reminding me about it- it’s always been in my storage, got a bit lazy to learn and shoot during winter :)

@@onzkicg I always keep it on the living room table to have it at hand quickly, and take it along whenever there is a good chance for me to take some pics. Although, most of the time, I am in snapshot mode. My tripod is probably the least used piece of my equipment. :-D

Hi CG - please return it to place of purchase for a refund. I have an early-production A77 and A65 as well as A230, and the A77 has the flash pushed very far forward. The mounting plate should be ok, but it does not give the full effect because of the A77's placement. We are not offering it as a solution for the A77 until - yes - we come out with the new model. Thank you for your patience!

Not entirely sure, and this is probably a very noobish statement as I am still learning, but I know with my NEX-6 once I get faster than the 1/160 shutter speeds, my on camera flash still triggers the external flash, but it does not throw any light from the on camera flash (like it does not HSS, which is an advantage in this case). This might even be in the manual - but I like to experiment hands on and read only when I am stumped. It also might just be an unintended GOOD "bug/hack"! Also a very different camera, but still Sony.

Having a77 in your hand is like you have magnet in metal hand. I have 1ds Mark II also because of prismatic view in veins., having that camera in hand makes you think more about gravity then photography, it "desperately" wants to go away trying to leave your hand.
Sony a77 is just perfect for someone who need to bond with all in one camera but pioneer electronic viewfinder is real pain in the ass when it comes to serious stuff. I hate it sometimes. Also, "almost" full frame is not full frame.
