Ha! How did you know what my next video was going to be.
And oh so soothing to listen to
Have you got a link to that video?
Literally. I don't even care what he is making. I just click on whatever I haven't seen yet. Never disappointed.
I'm sure your letter carrier thanks you! As a rural letter carrier I subconsciously rate all my customers based on the quality of the mailbox and Christmas goodies.
Ha! Every home is different, but for ours it really is the first thing you see when coming in. I wanted it to put my best foot forward for that very reason.
The show plow drivers in my neighborhood would really love this.
Ha! I bet. Our neighborhood doesn't get plowed, so not an issue here.
It’s really refreshing to see someone marketing a product at or below the actual rating. I’d say that pole saw can easily measure 2.25hp.
Great build as always mike. Your videos are therapy.
15:11. That trick alone was worth the price of admission, lol. Gonna use it to make some 1/2" key holders from 3/4" dowel stock.
Thank you. That is a neat trick for sure.
The dow making tip was incredible! Tank you! Also linseed paint is a good permanent outdoor finish
Thank you for the tip. I'll look into linseed paint.
Great band name, Nine Thousand Cuts. Well done, Mikey.
Totally. Thank you.
It’s absolutely glorious! I love the massive rock with the post scribed to it and of course the painstaking joinery… as it should be built!
Thank you very much.
Pro tip: when trying to find the center just angle the tape measure on the workpiece to the next nearest whole number. for your example that would be 5". then mark at 2.5" and its the center.
That is a good tip. Thank you.
@@MikeFarrington yea once you do it once you're gona feel really silly for not doing it from the second you picked up a tape looking for center. Its ok. we all felt the same thing.
@@jeepxj We'll see. Peoples brains work in different ways. I'll give it a try but, the measuring from both sides could help me prevent a math error. Hope that makes sense.
@@MikeFarrington in theory it always finds the center. you dont need to know your overall dimension.
@@MikeFarrington You can do both. Angle one way to get an easily divisible number, mark, then angle the other way.
Wow - you do beautiful work and entertain, too! I would love to spend a vacation of one or two weeks in your shop. Your knowledge of the craft is impressive.
Thank you.
That might be the most understated line in all Woodworking YT, “Good lumber makes all the difference, it’s such a pleasure to work with nice materials.” Truer words have never been spoken!
Thank you. Good materials make the difference.
Love the clip for your sanding blade/disk. 👍.💖🌞🌵😷
Thank you Suzi.
The project and video were both great! Coming from someone who will never spend the time to film any of my projects, please keep filming and posting yours lol
Thank you. Will do.
Great job! Glad to see you picking up some checks in the last scene.
I wish.
Keeping it positive, like, I’m positive I dig your videos and appreciate what you do.
@@Mikemalone7873 Thank you. I'm with ya, gotta stay positive.
You should get yourself a Super Surfacer. I've never seen one in real life and I think they're only common in Japan, but every time I see one I want one. I've been watching Japanese woodworkers on RUclips and there are so many specialty Japanese tools that simply don't exist here for whatever reason. (I've been watching "Shoyan Japanese Carpenter" and "Ishitani Furniture".)
Funny you mention it, I have wanted one for a while. I just found out about one for sale near me on eBay, but I missed the end of the auction by an hour or so.
While I enjoy working with wood and building things, I realize now how I would have never be able to make a living at it. I have not had the patience as I see you demonstrate in your videos. I once built a playhouse for my kids when they were young but I didn't use any plans. It worked and they and the neighbor kids enjoyed playing in it. But it would never have been worthy of a video. Just wanted to say that while I will never have never lived up excellence in my journey, I do very much appreciate your excellence. I have been a fan of your site for a long time! Thanks for your videos!
Thank you.
I noticed that you didn’t bring over your newspaper tube to the new structure. Thanks for sharing this insightful video. Hopefully some neighborhood fool will not attempt to move this box with his moving vehicle. Our driveway fronts on a state highway. We lost two mailbox posts to vehicles; on the second encounter the driver left an oil pan in exchange for the steel rebar that was pounded 18” deep in ground and about 18” inside the cedar post. I will have to look for a rock if we have to replace another mailbox.
Wishing you and your family a blessed week, gentle weather and restful evenings. Cheers
Thank you. Sorry to hear about your mailboxes. Fortunately, we are on a quite dead end road.
Yes - I use the 9000 cut process often. Just seems to be so much more work to setup a router or dado stack.
Glad to know that professionals do the same.
Plus the dado leaves scoring marks.
That turned out really nice. 👍🏽
Thank you! Cheers!
Wow better than norms now that’s impressive 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻🇮🇪🇮🇪
Thank you.
A great project, Mike. Love that a true carpentry master often has a Band-Aid on a finger. Your' videos are not only educational, but very relaxing too.
Thank you Phil. If I told you how I cut my finger you'd laugh.
The artist strikes again.
Thank you.
Thank you! Recently purchased the materials for my mailbox (was also inspired by the 3rd Coast video), now I have all the motivation i need to make a complete mess and lasting finished product!
Nice, go for it.
Great project. Last year, I built a new mailbox based on a design similar to yours -- less the boulder. It was a very satisfying project with nice results. Yours has been the same, it is clear.
Nicely done!!!
Very cool!
Really beautiful work! Inspiring.
Thank you.
If that’s the miter saw that I think it is…Nice! 💯
Yes, that is a very high end saw.
That’s the most gangster mailbox I’ve ever seen.
Thank you.
Pro tip: Thnak you = Thank you 😁
Well done on the mailbox, it looks amazing and I now want one.
Glad you like it!
That’s beautiful. Very nice work. Take care
Thank you! Cheers!
@@MikeFarrington While I was watching I was hoping you did not live in an area that receives any snow. Plow trucks can be brutal on mailboxes. It looks like that’s not an issue. Awesome job
@@mtadams2009 It snows like crazy here, but our roads do not get plowed.
@@MikeFarrington Well that’s good. Where I live my mailbox gets destroyed every few years from the plows.
Looks great.
Thanks!
Like a rock, standin' arrow straight
Like a rock, chargin' from the gate
Like a rock, carryin' the weight
Like a rock
Mike, what song? Easy....easy
I worked in a bowling alley for 5 years back in the 90s, I know every word to every Bob Seger song.
Lovely piece of craftsmanship. You made something simple as a postbox a pleasure to watch.
Thank you Phil.
Mike lm in the Uk and sir you could put this in harrods what is the most expensive shop in London Mike you are a real G as my son says 😊👍
Thank you, that is quite the compliment.
Very nice Mike! Some excellent techniques and tips in this video that are helpful even though I will probably never make this project.
Glad it was helpful!
High quality detailed build, nice work! Lol if someone hits that mailbox they will certainly fill it! I’ve been thinking about building one with a large oversized mail box to keep delivery drivers off of my drive way. 👍
Fill it with what?
@@idontthinkso666 Hi Pat, I’ve had my mailbox hit several times before. Slamming into this one you would certainly fill it as it as a large rock they would also hit.
That's a good idea!
@@idontthinkso666 blood....probably.
10:00 for accuracy when choosing a drafting triangle, get the larger one. Just like a level, bigger is better! 💖🌞🌵😷
Thank you Suzi.
@@MikeFarrington, I haven't been getting notifications of your videos, so I'll be doing a Mike Farrington marathon this weekend! 💖🌞🌵😷
@@suzisaintjames I am totally bummed to hear this, unfortunately, I have heard this from others as well. There is nothing I can do, I just take the beating the algorithm dishes out. Thank you very much for you views and comments over the years. It really means a lot.
One factor of notifications could be because of the frequency of your videos. I understand that it takes time to do these projects, and that time doubles or quadruples when you are filming... But have you considered doing RUclips's new "shorts" videos? You could do a series of basic woodworking 101 tips for newbies like me! For example, I learned that for my current project that I need full extension, bottom mount drawer slides, for a pull out shelf. And that cabinet handles come with all sorts of different hole widths... so don't drill the holes until you get your handles home. ... Or you could film somethings that you might be showing your shop apprentice to how to do.💖🌞🌵😷
@@suzisaintjames I agree that my posting frequency is quite low. I like the idea of 101 style videos, let me put some thought into that. I do have a video all planned out where the Shop Apprentice and I go back in time 35 years to the first project I ever built, which I still use to this day. If you have any questions you think I can help with feel free to email me via my website.
Hello Mike, When the Chairman of the board says upgrade, we upgrade. Great job learned a lot. From one of the billions of fans. LOL Songs to enjoy from your female fans. The Eagles "Take it Easy" and "Those Shoes" Thank you
Thank you Delilah. Take it Easy has a special place in my heart. It was the first song my dad played for me when I was just a little boy. He played a few others from the Eagles greatest hits, then we moved on to Born in the USA.
If you're asking H.M. Murdock from The A-Team, I believe it would be a 2 horsey power pull saw! Amazing build as always Mike!!
Ha! Love it. Thank you.
Very nice. I have been wanting to do this very thing for our mail box as well as a house number post.
Go for it!
Nice work! The next one will be 'Mailbox of Majesty' :)
Ha! I like that one.
Beautiful project!
Thank you! 😊
Nicely done. A great addition to the compound!
Thank you.
Amazing project, humor, and shirt selection. I lost it at “it saws most things”.
Ha! Thank you. I always thought Sawzall was a little much.
From this video alone I think your mortiser has earned the title “the Mighty Mortiser”. Thanks for another great video.
That is such a nice tool.
Nice job. Here in NZ our specs say letterbox needs to be big enough to hold A4 size mags and envelopes. We have a lot of small useless boxes sold in stores here, but as a posty they are such a pain to put mail in. Yes you can fold the item to fit but many are stamped saying do not bend. (Certificates or photos etc). I love the way you included your numbers, looks a more pro finish and overall nicer look. One concern may be that being a solid wood post it might crack or warp and twist overtime.
Good info. Thank you. All lumber in the project was dried to about 10%, which means it will be stable outdoors in this environment. So cracking, or any other defect is very unlikely.
a little bit of Japanese-esque! Nice!
Indeed.
Looks awesome! Thanks for sharing all your tips and tricks with us.
My pleasure!
It turned out beautiful. Nice project! Like the dowel making tip. Thanks
That is a really neat tip for sure.
Beautiful . (thank goodness you don't have street plows)
Ha! Out in the country, I'm the plow driver, so if it gets hit, its on me.
Anyone want to road trip with me to 1234, Colorado? We can watch Mike do wood stuffs, in-person...
Weee. Lets go.
Terrific content as usual Mike. Love the humorous commentary too. Great stuff.
Glad you enjoyed it
The moment you forget to replace the 1234 with your real street # and confuse the crap out of your mail person
Ha!
Nice job. Loved the ideas here. My last place I found a granite core ( square) for the post..
That is awesome!
The tractor demo wins the internet today!
Ha! Thank you.
This is art😢 such beautiful work
Thank you.
Mike, nice to see another great video. I use my sanding disc on most every project.
That is really great to hear. Thank you.
Geez. You my friend have a lot of very nice, expensive machinery. Puts my small shop to shame. Nice job.
Thank you. I am a professional cabinet maker, hence the shop and tools.
Good Job bro,
Thank you so much 😀
Awesome! ❤️
Thank you! Cheers!
What a beautiful build ( as always) 👏🏻👏🏻 🙋🏻♀️🇬🇧💕jane
Thank you so much 😀
Your hilarious man. I love the quick witty jokes throughout your videos. This was fun to watch and definitely inspiring for me to replace out goofy crooked mailbox that’s currently teetering on a metal pole.
Glad you enjoyed!
2hp huh - I guess you’ve got some serious guns 💪🏽!!!!
Ha!
@@MikeFarrington also beautiful work - I just did a similar project for my farm stand signs .. I can never understand why people use the fake rickety ones, even on beautiful houses…
@@Hoenerfarms I'm with you. Especially if its the entrance to the property.
Thnak you for being such an inspiration. See what I did there 😀
Ha!
Over designed, over built, over budget, over finished.. I love it!
Thanks Mike.
Thnak you for sharing ;-)
My pleasure!
There are entire RUclips videos dedicated to showing crappy methods of making dowels and you just threw this gem as an offhand remark. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it! I try and stick neat tips in my videos in an attempt to keep them compelling.
Liked-Subscribed-Notified. NICE SHOP! I have a PowerMatic 66 tablesaw, and a Laguna 18" bandsaw.. but your shop outclasses mine
Thank you. Great to have you onboard. I am a professional woodworker, hence my shop is pretty well outfitted.
How appropriate, a "Make it a Blockbuster Night" shirt followed by an "inconceivable" one LOL
Ha! I have been upping my shirt game lately.
What can I say but it was an awesome build. Great to see the apprentice, he is growing up fast. Next he will be asking for a salary
Thank you. He is getting big so fast.
Nice video, again. :D
Thanks again!
Sweet!
Beautiful addition to the ole homestead. Unfortunately where I live, we have far too many "youths" (yeah, we'll call them that for RUclips's benefit) that are inclined to do damage to mailboxes. I have to live with something far less decorative that's cheaper and quicker to repair/replace as necessary.
Oh, and its great to see the shop apprentice back in the shop again. Man has he grown.
He is getting big for sure. My hope is that when my youth is of age he will not be one of the ones damaging mailboxes.
Pro tip: When going out of your way to not show your house number on your project, make sure to remove the house number sign on the rock behind your mailbox :P
I didn't take that out because I thought it wasn't legible.
Rocking!
Hold it, the way to install a post into a bolder is set the post on the top and use your rubber mallet to beat the post down into the rock, no problem the woods really dry. Should be pice of cake.
Or you can if your not good with a rubber mallet just use a threaded rod epoxyed into the stone.
I was waiting for you to pull out thd handy dandy festool loose tennioning tool and put some stone loose tenons it it.
Nice video! Think you'd like the comic Mark Normand if you haven't yet heard his stuff!
Thank you. I am a fan of Marks.
I feel old now seeing that your shop apprentice is nearly 18 !!
Crazy how fast time rolls by.
Great job. That's certainly gonna last a while. Well done.
Hope so!
All mere mortals: “How is the WORLD did Mike cut such a PERFECT mortise in SOLID ROCK?!?!?” Mike: I’ll just scribe the post to the rock and shave it down a touch … there. Done.”
My thought was wood cuts easier.
Totally opened this video to figure out your address. So bummed I won't be able to visit unannounced. Freaking cool mailbox though!!
Thank you.
Overengineered. A bit posh. Showoff-ish.
I love it!
Ha! Thank you.
Thnak you Mike, for another informative and entertaining video. Your block plane is having an identity crisis. Is it mighty or is it trusty?
Haha! Well technically that is a slightly different one. My Trusty block place is the good ole adjustable mouth block plane from Lie Nielsen, but I recently picked up the rabbet block plane. So it needed a new name.
1-2-3-4? That's the kind of thing an idiot would have on his luggage! 😁
Ha! Funny you mention that, I was going to make that joke, but that would make two videos in a row with a Space Balls reference. Which, I think even Mel Brookes would think it over kill.
I'm betting that while working on the "tusk", you were listening to Fleetwood Mac? Just a guess. 😁 (Great job on the mailbox post, btw)
That is a great song for sure.
TRILLIONS!!!!
Well lets not go too far.
Nice job.
Are you making a video of the new slider and your new radial arm saw station?
Big fan!
Thank you. Yes, that is a bigger project and as such the editing is taking much longer.
I"m doing the same project except with an oak tree that died in my yard.
That sounds totally cool.
How do you think this would hold up in the snowy north where the snow coming off the wing blade can knock a post out of plumb if not break the post?
I live in a very snowy climate. However, our roads are not plowed. If I truck hit this thing it would break pretty quick.
Who’s the guy you thanks for inspiration at the end ?
Hes a fellow RUclipsr. Look him up.
Great project Mike..... There are a few million females admirers scouring Google Earth now for that beauty... 😂😂
Haha.
Whoa. What's up with that miter saw? Long time viewer here. You had a DeWalt for as long as I can remember.
I have since upgraded the miter station. I have a video for that project that has not yet been edited.
Hey mike
A vid of the omga???
How’s it working out
"I'm just not gonna do that for a mailbox post" You're right with a substandard design and construction using cheap tools why waste further time.
Indeed, thank you.
I am sure that everyone wants to know, where did you get the self-healing forstner bit?
Thats a CMT bit, and fixes hole nicely.
I think you still got the address number in at 19:38. Great video as always!
Ha! Good eye, I didn't that it was legible enough to worry about it.
Does any read the Postal Code on mail box placement and build?
Are you talking about the rules for mailbox installation?
👍👍👍👍
Thank you.
Why not a handmade cedar mailbox.
What type of miter saw is that
Omga.
Does anyone realize there is a movie recommendation in this video? "1-2-3-4? That is the stupidest address number I've ever heard! That is something an idiot would have on his luggage!"
Still do not get it? Spaceballs!
Ha! Indeed. I was going to make a stronger reference to Space Balls, but that would make two videos in a row that I referenced it.
