I was hoping for a true four-piece; ride / hi-hat / snare / kick. Try that! Use a thin ride to double up as a crash.
Black Emperor a true 4-piece would be snare, tom, tom, kick. cymbals don't count as "pieces." what you suggested would be cool though, it could be done.

Well, i've seen one deathmetal band in which drummer didn't even had any toms, but had like bazilion of cymbals ahaha. So that's not even bad. Still even better than my current setup :D

I keep wondering why noone uses drop clutches for their hihats (anymore)? I love it. Gives you a "half open" sound without the need to rest your foot on the pedal.

David Bland of Full of Hell was notorious for playing some crushing grind on a 4 piece kit, as well as using one single kick pedal. Usually i tend to stray away from bands that have single kick drummers, but FoH are certainly an exception.

I really hope he's earning loads of money, what with his mind bending drumming ability & he's massively entertaining humour he should be!! I seem to be watching he's vids all the time & other vids & stuff including those from Mike Mangini, Gavin Harrison & Thomas Lang, have all been put on the back burner! I have the same feeling listening to him, who I discovered a few days ago, as I had when I first heard Rush & Mr Peart 38 years ago & at age 17!
