Hyperlinks in Org Mode is future proof. When new link types are added, they are extended here and we benefit from using the same editing, navigation, presentation features for the new link types. New link types become just another item in familiar environs. No more learning curves, installing new packages, learning new key bindings.
Org Mode at first had just a few link types. Now there are so many, I lost count. Some link types are fully integrated with TRAMP, Magit, DIRED, bookmarks, info nodes, etc. For me the DOI links, as shown briefly in this video, helps with my bibliographic references database, annotations, and latex layout for journals and publications.
Links are fundamental building blocks for not just Org Mode but all of Emacs.

If you type C-c k and then any command, Emacs gives information about the command.
