I rely heavily on org roam 2. every single day I use it, and I wouldn’t want to miss it ever

It's great when a software meets one's needs.

I’ve always been more of a fan of the tree-of-blocks based approach that the original Roam took since it aligns more with how I think when I write notes (maybe one could call it “thinking in threads”). I haven’t looked much into Org Roam, but somehow (like Obsidian) it didn’t click with me, mainly because I was missing that bullet/block structure. Now that I think about it, maybe I could make use of headings and auto-indentation to imitate it…
I also have the impression that the note-taking and second-brain hype has been wearing off in recent years, which may have contributed to the lack of interest in developing Org Roam. People have gotten tired and disenchanted by the fact that note-taking tools cannot actually solve their problems without continuous effort and a clear purpose on what to do with them. However, I would still love to see this project evolve further, in whatever direction they envision, since Org Mode is still such a good fit for that.

Deep thoughts. They are much appreciated. I concur about those softwares not clicking with me.

There's more stuff now but the character of the web with regard to multimedia has not changed in a long time. The dominance of plain-text has got nothing to do with the items themselves (see XML, which is adapted to any EDI situation). If you keep notes on a building project, your notes don't hold the building materials either, they may contain links or comments (in text) on how to get to more media-rich content. Images can be integrated. To integrate moving images isn't even useful because they cannot be scanned in an instant (unlike an image). The purpose of a "Zettelkasten" is the organization of your mind and your workflow, and not the organisation of your material.

You have made some great points. I appreciate esp. the analogy with building materials and also the last point about organizing one's own mind. That's the tough part. The distinction is crucial but one we seldom make.

I am not sure what exactly he means with that post. Metadata is text, can still be useful. Transcripts of audio, video; ai/ML recognition of objects in pictures, photos etc; my own descriptions is metadata .... So it is more of a failure of imagination then hard limit; or he means working with multimedia in some higher level way. Manipulating / transforming multimedia is not possible in emacs.

My biggest complaint about computing is that Apple and microsoft does make use of indexing of files, they see everything we click, open, copy etc, but we are not provided with api to this functionality so we can not currently use it productively in our own systems, save it and work with that data. if windows knows url of picture i downloaded, why i can not use that information too...

What i love is that i can dictate, or listen to high quality text to speech in both windows and apple ecosystem by using included operating system capability. So text does not always mean i need to read it / write it.

    org-roam-ui-mode can be improved,
I records my 10 years experience in org-roam with org-brain which also has the same situation
    They fully fullfill my requirement.
Keep muliti-media infomation is not a problem for me, I have tons of dance videos.

I'm not sure if the problem is really plain text. I'm a long term org-mode user, and I wasted way too much time trying to get org-roam to simply work. And then it would break again. I finally gave up, and moved to Obsidian -- the setup was simple, and it stores text, images, video, web pages... all organized by a modern markdown skeleton. It's still not Word, it's still not Evernote, it's still not Excel or Zotero. But it's fine, and it still has plain text durability.

Yes, I agree that org roam is tricky. As for Obsidian I have not tried it. Thanks for your feedback.

The problem seems to be related with the idea of a everything is a file/plaintext concept. This is from old school bsd or Unix days and had some wisdom behind it.
