Andy "aTrippyFarmer" Dole is a 6th generation farmer from Central Illinois. On this farm, Andy works alongside his father, Marty, his uncles, Chris and Jeff, and his sister, Katie, to grow corn and soybeans on some of the finest dirt in the world. Andy and his family are deeply rooted in the area, operating a large farm that traces it origins back into the 1800s. Although some tracts did not stand the test of time, Andy and his family still grow corn and soybeans on fields that have been in the family for longer than even the oldest members of the farm have been alive. We do, we have, and we always will take tremendous pride in calling this piece of paradise our home. Andy was a Bronze Tablet graduate of the University of Illinois in the field of Crop Sciences, following the same path as his father and late grandfather.
It would be misleading for Andy to claim that this life is one that came by chance; rather, as a member of two multi-generational farm families, it was simply in his blood. His passion for agriculture traces back to his early youth--some of his fondest, earliest memories being of days spent riding in the combine with his father and grandfather. Although his understanding of the lifestyle was much less complex in the beginning, the love he has for farming, and its industry has only appreciated through time. As this dream blossomed into adulthood, Andy now works relentlessly, and tirelessly, to chase his own dreams and to build a farming operation of his own alongside his family.
We, as a whole operation, are handymen, electricians, mechanics, landscapers, accountants, economists, caretakers, stewards, and, most importantly, farmers, and we take an incredible amount of pride in our work. There is no challenge too overwhelming, no situation too stressful, and no problem too difficult for us to take on, and we want to take you along with us. Welcome to our farm and welcome to our lives. You have the best seat in the house to watch the everyday chaos of farming unfold--we usually only get concerned when things aren't going wrong!

I grew up on a farm. I remember every chore being very difficult in some way or another. Even though these guys have state of the art equipment, they still have their hands full with a great deal of strenuous physical labor and never enough time to get it done. My hats off to these guys and all the farmers that are true heroes in helping to make sure we have food on our tables every day. If I was younger I would go help these guys with no pay expected just to show them that America needs more folks just like them. Best of luck with the planting season.

He sure is growing up fast. It is amazing and sad at the same time, so we do our best to enjoy all of the laughs and frustrations. I don't think that he fully understands the situation. It is hard to tell sometimes what they comprehend and what they don't, so I guess we will find out in August when he has a baby brother!

Love seeing the videos from a different farmers perspective. I farm in michigan and all we are getting is rain and we can’t plant. We’ve gotten 20 acres in and that’s it. Glad you guys are starting to plant. Safe season.

I've noticed from watching these channels that a lot of this newer equipment is 10 miles an hour when I was working on any farm 7 miles an hour was the fastest you could ever go but with this newer equiptment it sure seems strange going that fast across the field

It is amazing how much ground a modern planter can cover. Much different than my experience in the 1980's, four rows at a time on an open station tractor.
That is an understatement, and we don't even run close to the biggest size planter. There are some that will lap us!

Hey Andy, The biggest loss of time on a farm is wheels and batteries. In my opinion. All tractor implements tires should come with run flat tires.

Lemongrass. Cleans up your water from all the bacteria mold grime etc. Great for home use, too. Put some bee hives out there, wildflowers, black locust etc
I remember back in late 70s everybody had hard dirt clods the size of your head that only a forest city du-all, if anyone remembers that brand, would bring back into shape. There were times had to overlaphalf to reallywork good. 24 inches requires 25 inches of plastic tile to pop into place if I remember correctly. Battery specialist is best place for batteries, hands down.
Lad enjoy the old boys while you still have them. I am an old boy now and I miss my dad and uncle’s hell I miss my grandfather and grand uncle’s, they fought and criticised each other and me but they would have died for each other, great men and great farmers, now I am the only one of my generation still farming with my sons and grandkids, we probably produce more in one year than all of them produced in their combined lifetimes and farm more land than they would believe but it was their work and wisdom that has us here. Best of luck with the planting.
I enjoy working with my family, and I sure do appreciate all of the opportunities that they have given me. I think it would be a disgrace to not give them a hard time occasionally. That's just what we do!
Great start to 2023 ! with all the bells and whistles on new equipment more often then not we don't see when you cant make the bells whistle or the whistles bell , its wonderful when we sit in the tractor of these million dollar rigs and we see how far we have come just within the life time of your dad ! what took 14days to plant 30 years ago now is done in days with less people ,i like long form videos but ill watch what ever format you end up on God bless you and yours and don't sweat the little stuff .

Hey there Andy and Crew, I hope this finds you all well and good!
Using a "feeling that you had while transporting your planter" as a tool for determining how your tractor should be "ballasted" is a new one on me?
I would be willing to bet, that you should've been "removing" ballast, and not adding it.
When you were cultivating, you were concerned about seeing your tractor ruts, which reduces yield an average of 17%.
Reducing soil compaction by reducing the axle weight of your tractors, (along with everything else) is the most economical, and beneficial way to increase yields, and fuel efficiency, while reducing unnecessary wear and tear on your tractors.
I would love to come and bring a couple of students from Virginia Tech with me to do a "Soil Compaction Analysis" on one or two of your fields, however I find myself currently with neither time, or available students to travel to Central Illinois, however both of these should be remedied by Fall.

Nope we don’t even do that anymore since the corn heads are stored on carts now!!

You need to mark that drainage spot and come back to see the crop (difference). Sure it’ll be a small spot but still interesting
It is hard to make a fair comparison...I think it's just safe to say that it'll be better unless the disturbance in soil takes a year or two to settle out.

I know I’m a bit late to the show here, but that hissing noise at 49 minute mark sounds like cavitation.
It could've been some air trapped in the system... it's a non-issue at this point. The hydraulic downforce system is also notorious for vibrating/pulsing when not pushing against the ground.
Today is May 2nd. Heard on news there was a multi car wreck with several deaths up on I-55 in central IL. Authorities said pile up was caused by dust from high winds and farmers working fields. Was that anywhere near you?

That was just south of Springfield, which is about 70ish miles to the west of us. It isn't really uncommon for the wind to pick up dust if it is dry, but these seems like an unlucky combination of the severity and the location. It is a really unfortunate deal!

Yeah that was about 75 miles to the west/northwest of us. It isn't uncommon for the soil to pickup a little bit if the wind is strong and the ground is dry...just usually doesn't happen next to an interstate!

Those are water well pump houses. A local water cooperative pulls water from that field for their service.
Doesn’t have exact emerge on the bean planter but still plants at exact emerge speeds*

We mow with the 7800 and run a big auger in the fall. The 4520 is officially retired!
First time viewing your channel. You do a real good job explaining the planting process. Very educational. My question is do closing and opening disc on a planter wear out quicker in cover crop or no tilled ground compared to tilled ground? Looking forward to watching more videos.

Like the video but just have a quick question 1 when do you know when it the right time to plant
2 how long does it take before you can harvest.
The right time to plant is when the soil is dry and the weather is starting to warm up. For us, thst usually occurs in April. Length to harvest would depend on the maturity of crops planted. In our area, it’ll take about 5-6 months to harvest these crops.
I get the feeling that the transfer of decision making on your farm is challenging at times. Sometimes it's easy for the younger generations to fail to recognize what the older generations have had to do to survive and hopefully be able to pass on a viable farming operation. The younger generations will have their challenges too as time goes on but what those that lived through the 1970's and 1980's did is probably more than most today would. If I were to be asked what words of wisdom I would pass on it would be no doubt similar to your dad's, at the end of the day, there must be money in the bank after paying the bills. The technology, new equipment, peer pressure from those who are not agriculturally affiliated, are fine, but agriculture rewards those who love it for what it is and are willing to pay the price. That's why there are only 1% of the population involved. The cost is too high.
I definitely agree that farmers of my age have been spoiled by supportive grain prices, yields, and fancy equipment. The generations before me have really paid the price for our current success, and I am really grateful for that. My dad, although willing to upgrade to newer equipment and add other upgrades, is tremendous at saving money and doing things to get by. People see the fleet of equipment and think that it was all purchased with one check, but it is decades worth of investment that has led to this point. Farming has been relatively simple for the past 15 years. I really think about anyone could've made money growing corn and soybeans, though there are some farms that are exceptional at the business of farming. Thanks for the comment!

A minute is a little bit of an overestimation. Farming is not the same thing that it was a century ago. Many of these individual fields all provided for one family. Often, there is remains of an old house or farm in certain fields. There are much less than there were years ago!

There is no fair average. From North to South, there is a lot of variability in soil quality. In central Illinois, where we farm, productive ground has been selling for almost 19-20,000 per acre.
On the 8370r, do you run water in the tires, front and rear?
Nope!
