@@MrdBean The people of the temple were being charged hefty taxes by the british and many people in the city were doing forced labor. people became poor and and people like Adenline Gibson abused their oppression to purchase artifacts from people who may have even lacked ownership. it was a time of brutal colonial oppression for the people at the time.
Not sure . Though they claim they had allegedly boUght the Pillars from Temples authorities/ Trust, which given the period it was done, it was more likely taken without much of a by your leave!
An interesting and absorbing speech on temple architecture especially of Madurai. Worth listening to. But how these columns, sculptures etc, were acquired by the West, is a matter of controversy. The claim of purchase by some visitor is very much dubious and not supported by any evidence, which will stand legal scrutiny. No one had authority to sell the same officially, and they are either forcibly taken or some local man, or groupay have made money by selling such priceless architectural heritages. Whatever is found in west is either stolen or forcibly from Asia, Africa, Arabian countries during the period of colonisation.
Awesome explanation
Do we know how those columns reached the museum?
Yes it was give by ADENLINE PEPPER GIBSON
