I did a Trail 10k last month wasn’t having a good day. Forgot my 📱 so no music, just a didn’t have it in and nearly 4K got overtaken by an over weight man and a pensioner. That finished me. I started walking and kept going. After 5k the tail Enders slowly ran past me and the tail walker caught me up. just ran my first half this week. my legs and feet felt like they were going to split open. just means i need more practice! good luck with your running :)
big thank you from me to you guys for your inspiration., I've just completed a solo half marathon today. 1 hour 53 mins, not bad for 55 year old. i set myself a goal at the beginning of year to complete a half marathon. unfortunately in March i tested positive for covid , this set me back for a couple of months, trying to recover and getting the energy and fitness back has been a bit of a up hill battle, but ive done it and i feel so proud of myself.
Not bad for 55 years old? You are amazingly fit!!! The record for the top athletes is 57:52. Brillant time, I just completed my first solo half at 3:32 and I am 33. You and I are both badasses. I hope you only get faster. Same for me. Take care!
Ran my first half marathon today and absolutely loved every second of it. Did it in 2:16 which is something for me to work on going forward. Now I'm home feet up and reliving the whole thing. After a rubbish year of breaking up with my girlfriend and having my 2 year old son live 150 miles away now this feels like a minor boost that I can do anything if I put my mind to it. Love all your videos such a good inspiration and help with good tips and advice and can't wait to do more half marathons and join a running club in the new year!!
I just ran my first half marathon as a 13 y.o. with my coach in April. We trained up to 10 miles in the park. At mile 9 during the race, that's when I hit the "wall" mentally, and if my coach hadn't been there right beside me, I would've given up. It also helped that my parents tried to meet me at as many mile markers as they could. I started training right after my cross country season ended, so I was in pretty good shape to begin with. I did at least 4 miles every day, and also did lots of tempo runs and hill repeats. All of my training really helped me in my race! My goal was to get sub 2 hours, and I got 1:59:59! Love the channel! Keep up the great work! These tips are really useful!
Thanks so much to the running channel team, i ran my first halfmarathon ever today!!! 2:30:22 im soo happy and proud, your videos have helped me from couch to halfmarathon!!!
I ran my First half in Berlin last year and my training was appalling. However, the crowd were amazing and there was support on every inch of the route. I ran with my mum who kept me going and I didn't stop, we finished in 2 hours 20. I was so proud and emotional crossing the finish hand in hand with my mum through the Brandenburg Gate! My advice for your first half is to find one with big support! The crowd truly keeps you going and also..... Vaseline.

Chris G great advice! I remember my first 1/2. Set out at 1 min faster pace per k for the first 13 k. Died at 15k and ended up completing the last 6k at 2 min slower than my planned pace. Finished 1:48:50 I also tried energy gels, something I had never done before, and instantly vomited. I did my first half marathon on Saturday and did it in a time of 1 hour 37 mins. Was really happy with it and makes me want to do some races. Also really enjoyed it
I’ve been running for over 40 year on and off, but more regular now. I remember when I took up running, I started by doing a mile, I felt knackered, then I would try 2 miles the next time, running through the mile distance without even thinking about it and getting to the 2 miles and again being knackered and so on. And before you know it, you’re up to a Half Marathon distance. I still use this technique and now up to 17 miles, my furthest distance. I believe there’s a bit of psychology involved. Also it will get to the point where never mind what your heads telling you, your body will soon tell you when it’s had enough.
I’m training for a half marathon with a goal of full marathon at the end of the year! It’s hard to believe half a year ago I was very overweight, and now am challenging myself to distance running.
I did a couple of halve marathons and for me it works great to run 3 times a week with 1 long 10- 15 km and 2 short runs 5-8 km. And a week before the race run a solid 15km and then rest for the rest of the week till 2 days before the race do a short run of 3-5km. Its magic, you will be so powerful during race day. Also don't start to fast and don't forget to do a quick warming up before the race and remember all the great tips of this video :)
Then you should absolutely include walking breaks or even walk with running stretches for the beginning, if you're working hard during long runs from the get-go you will have a much harder time building the aerobic base you'll need in order to actually get faster for a long distance.
Huzzah Running channel I did a half marathon solo run in a park yesterday!!! 3:32 huzzah!!!!! I am so thankful! Your tips were so helpful. 5 months of training. I love you guys!!!
Great to see an "average" runner again 😊 cant wait to see your first marathon!! Currently i am training for my 5 marathon (trying to run 50 marathons in the 50 states of the USA)
I find that when dealing with negative thoughts / mental stories in the head while running it works best for me to not make the thinking more complicated by trying to think positive thoughts. Makes things only more complicated and keep you in the head while running. Just be aware of them and see a thought as a thought, dont indentify with the negative ones that go through your mind while running. Keep focused on you breathing or make a conversation with someone if you are battling to much in your mind.
Thank you for the tips I did my first Half marathon just under an 1 hour and 53 minutes I was so happy that I have finished but I got a better surprise when I actually got second in my age division My goal set was to finish under two hours
Good luck to you, you'll do fine!! Run if you can, walk if you can't, crawl if you must! I haven't run a half marathon in almost 15 years, and have one in 3 days too... and I've only run a long run of 6 miles. Eek!
Thanks Anna. Some great advice for half marathon newbies. Finding your ‘happy pace’ is very important for anybody stepping up to any new distance. I would personally set a time target but keep it modest so you’re not putting yourself under too much pressure. Finish safely and enjoy the day.
My tip and it is kind of mentioned in the video is have 1 long run (not your longest, at least a month before the race and don't hurt yourself) where you run the last 3-4 kilometres at race pace having run a couple of kilometres earlier in the run at a faster pace (almost tempo, 10km pace). Your legs will feel a bit like jelly, but come race day when you see the 18km/11mile mark you will know you can finish at pace. If you're hurting before that mark, aim to get to it (18km) then finish from there. This was how I got myself though wanting to stop at 15-17km running my first half marathon last year.
Thanks so much, thia. was so informative. I'm planning on doing my half in November. I'm a little nervous, but I'm determined to do it. This has been my goal since I did my first 10 mile run.
I did my first half marathon training a while ago. At around 14 to 15 km I felt so great as if I could keep running like this forever. But it started to get harder when I reached 18k and I had to stop by a kiosk to grab a bottle of soft drink at 19k. I half ran half walked to finish the train because I didn't want to admit that I failed to finish the first half marathon training. So I definitely have the mental strength. I have my first half marathon race next March and I don't care whether I would be the last one. Anyway there has to be someone who comes back the latest.
that was really useful - a ton of tips i can apply - excellent. there's one thing i'd challenge: "it's ok to walk the entire half marathon" - thing is, these events are done on a tight budget and the organisers/local council start to dismantle the course after a set time
I am running my sixth half marathon on Sunday. I am a disabled runner I will be actually walking it in our training program is 18 weeks they ease me into it slowly
Half marathons are my favourite distance. Im an ex fatty whos still a bit of a chubber, and who didnt even start running til i was like 35, so speed really isnt my thing, but the longer the distance (or harder the run) the more the field comes back to me. Due to this, my masochist brain entered me into a half in november thats entirely up a mountain with like, 1200 meters elevation gain. Im kinda crapping myself and i love it lol oh, its got cutoff times too, just to feed my inner worrier. anyway, just go enter one, theyre great!
That sounds like you've set yourself a tough challenge! But it wouldn't be a challenge if there wasn't a bit of doubt as to whether you can do it or not! Good luck!
"10-12 weeks to be ready to run the half marathon"... well... more like 36 years, but that will be different for everyone I guess :D Never thought about nutrition before running ... or during... or at all, to be honest, so I definitly learned something here. At some point, I just stuck to "I'll just get going, and see how far I get...". There were 2 half marathons in between, with the average pace pretty much spot on for all of the 21ish kilometers. But then again, the second time I ever ran more than 10 km was when COVID had already struck, so a race was never an option, until now. With all the ongoing stuff, I'm still looking forward to my first proper half marathon race, where I'll probably incorporate much of what I learned on this channel and on others. Right now, my PB is at about 2:33, and to be honest, for someone who couldn't make it through the 400m in school, who relies on daily medication for his asthma, I'm very much fine with that. One thing that helped me a lot to go from "I hate running, but it's probably good for my health" to "whooohoo, let's go!" was changing my shoes. Went from regular cheapish running shoes to barefoot to minimal shoes and never looked back. No blisters, no pain the other day...
Excellent. I do like a nice half-marathon. Good distance - out long enough racing (races are an expensive business) worth traveling a distance to compete (get up early > car > 90 minutes drive etc) . A great test of fitness, of speed work for Marathons. I don't claim to be very fast but I try to treat a half as the longest short run whilst a marathon is the shortest long run! The last race I had (before the present situation) was the Bath Half - seems a loooong time ago; March 15th!! A cracking race : however over £40 to enter (fortunate to have an old bloke's gfa so £0): running events - like many things - a treat for the less well off and an enclave for the Middle Classes....I have digressed! I thoroughly recommend people to make the commitment to run a half.
Going To Have my First Half Marathon💓 Lets See What Will be my timings😄 My 1st 15k -1:05:39 My 1st 10k-47:56 Now I m gonno Add A 1st 21k Timing To after 2weeks Hahha My friends say your pace is Good Lets smash the Half Marathon Guys😎
what i did for my half marathon, was half run half walk, take a break halfway through, take a 30 minute nap and eat a chocolate milkshake, then come beack and half run half walk the last 3 miles. But i didn't practice at all and im 12 so very epic aslo it took like 5 hours
I started training for the half marathon flying pig here in Cincinnati in January. I hadn't seriously ran in over 10 years and I was never very good or fast at it. So my goal is to finish under 2:10 for this year, then I'll push for at least under 2 hours for the next one if I don't run the full marathon. So far I've gone from strugging to run 3 miles to struggling to run 7 miles, and a 4 mile run is pretty comfortable now. Although I don't really run at a talking pace. Military training kicks in and "If you can talk, you're not pushing yourself hard enough". Competitiveness works against me here. I'm bad at listening to my body and will push myself more than I should. I'm overweight (need to lose 30 lbs to be a healthy weight) and I still try to run like when I was 21.
Great video and information you have there for running the half, besides training you defintely need to run the right pace this is not a 10K run when I ran the half one of the best things I did was run with someone with the same pace and ability,, the miles especially in the second half flew by alot easier and finished the race better than I expected.
Thanks Henry! Glad you found a pacer friend helpful. And of course most of the bigger racers do out on official pacers that you can run with too which will help 👌
Thanks for this video, I used stratigies from this video on setting proper finishing goal and sticking to the plan and pace accordingly during the race. I finished in 2hr 12 mins which is a little more than that average, but close :)
Running my first 1/2 in March 2020! I'm very new to running in general, so I'm fairly anxious, but also really looking forward to it. Day 1 of my training was today, looking forward to the rest. Thanks for the really encouraging video!
Awesome! You’ll be great! Enjoy the training and celebrate each of the milestones. Hopefully there’s loads of handy videos for you on the Running Channel that should help
Doing my first half marathon in September. Terrified. I know I'm going to come last but my goal is to just finish before the cut off time of 4hrs...thats it. My only goal.
Thank you so much for all the advice! I am running a half on Sunday, it is not my first but my first since working with my running coach. I am quite nervous but determined to get it done! Thank you again, this channel is amazing and it is lovely to see all the comments on this video too. Xx
You also don't have to run for as long a time on race day as you're going a lot faster than a training room which is part of why it's doable even if you've never ran that distance before
I haven't competed in a half marathon since i was 18. I ran my first half on my 18th bday and my 2nd half on my 19th. Iam now 27 and i miss it so much. The same race i did is coming up in january and iam determined to get back into it, im ready for those emotional feels of missing it so much~but those happy ones also. Great tips !
I've ran 2 marathons, but never a half marathon race. I HAVE run a half marathon long run just for fun, and my PR is 2:06:06. This May will be my first, so I'm looking for all the tips I can get so I can succeed and crush that PR and break that 2 hour mark.

Excellent tips Anna I often run this distance and longer now sometimes 2 times a week However i remember first starting out as an older non runner in my late 30's I ran my first 1/2 in training I was very sore and stiff legs for a week after that Ive learned alot over the last 15 years Keep up the awesome advice coming Always enjoy your videos 👍😁🏃♂️
Awesome! Good luck! It’s normal to be excited and nervous - just trust your training and enjoy it! You only get chance to run your first half marathon once 👍 Let us know how you get on
When I ran the first half marathon I wasn't experienced enough. I was in a good shape but didn't train specifically for this distance. I ran the first 10 km in 38 minutes and I didn't feel tired . After 3 km I suddenly felt tired and felt stiff .it was really hard to get to the finishing line. After this one it took me other 4 half marathons to learn that it s better to run the first 10 k slower.
Last fall I did my first 10km cold turkey no training and it was only a little uncomfortable. Doing a half marathon in the spring and since I only need to do what I did 2x I feel 16 weeks is overblown. Was going to run a chill 5km and see my time and if that is manageable my training is done
Well done Im running a full marathon on October 13th I remember finishing my first and thinking great thats done never again That was 4 years ago This next one is number 5 Ive lost count of the 1/2 marathons and trail runs up to 30k ive done but the marathon requires alot more trainning and commitment both mental and physical Wish you all the best with your training Remember the last 10k is a mental challenge telling you to keep going when the rest of your body wants to quit Dont quit and when you cross that finish line you will be rewarded with an elation that you wont forget 👍🏃♂️😁
@@barefootbeachrunner9498 that means so much to me!!! Your story inspired me further🏃🏾♀️💪🏾 Training is so much harder. I've ran so many half marathons as well and barely trained and I'm quickly seeing that this marathon wont be as easy at all. Good luck on your 5th! you're amazing 😁😁
On the Run/Walk discussion, it just causes me pain. Lets say I am running 6 miles. I run the mile 1, walk 1/4 mile and run the remaining 3/4 mile, walk 1/4 mile and run the remaining 3/4 mile, repeat At around the 4th mile, my shin muscles are super tight and causes too much pain to run comfortably. BUT, if I run out the whole 6 miles, I never feel that muscle tightness.
Great review thank you for the input will get the two as soon as my one dies. In this world of carbon fiber plated shoes, not everyone has the budget to buy a racing shoes and so many reviewers on RUclips only think that racing shoes must have carbon fiber plate but for so many regular runner actually can race with lightweight shoes. I am using the Rincon one and it is great, saving it only for faster days and race days.
Even if you are last, you still beat the millions on the sofa

That's awesome! Well done!
This is the time I take to run 10km :(
@@filosvyz You're still crushing it, keep going :D
I’ve been running for over 40 year on and off, but more regular now. I remember when I took up running, I started by doing a mile, I felt knackered, then I would try 2 miles the next time, running through the mile distance without even thinking about it and getting to the 2 miles and again being knackered and so on. And before you know it, you’re up to a Half Marathon distance. I still use this technique and now up to 17 miles, my furthest distance. I believe there’s a bit of psychology involved. Also it will get to the point where never mind what your heads telling you, your body will soon tell you when it’s had enough.
I’m 17, running my first half-marathon on Sunday! Looking forward to it and aiming for 1:55! :) Thanks for the tips!
Good luck Will!
Running my first half marathon tomorrow TMM 2020. I hope I can ace it!
Good luck! You’ll be great 🙌
I’m training for a half marathon with a goal of full marathon at the end of the year!
Awesome tips, thanks for sharing!! And thank you!
Anna, I love the way you bound out of your front door, do a few leg lifts, and then turn and sprint away in the opposite direction!
Lol no matter how slow I run I will never be able to converse while I do it. I need all that spare oxygen lol
Kelley I thought it was just me, good to know I’m not alone 😀
Right?!?!
Then you should absolutely include walking breaks or even walk with running stretches for the beginning, if you're working hard during long runs from the get-go you will have a much harder time building the aerobic base you'll need in order to actually get faster for a long distance.
I signed up for a half marathon yesterday and the race is in 4 days and I have ran once in the last 3 weeks. Wish me luck!
LOVE the idea of dedicating a mile to someone special!
Huzzah Running channel I did a half marathon solo run in a park yesterday!!! 3:32 huzzah!!!!! I am so thankful! Your tips were so helpful. 5 months of training. I love you guys!!!
That is awesome - well done! We're so happy you've found our videos helpful :-). What's your next goal?
Thanks for the advice. This morning smashed my half marathon PB 1:40:56. Thought that was good for a 56 year old. Keep the advice coming it works.
Nice work Carl!
My mantra for my first half., pain is temporary success is forever
Running my first half marathon in 3 days! Very under prepared but I'll do my best!
Great shout. ‘Happy pace’ is a great phrase!
Just come across your channel in the build up to my first marathon after only ever running 10k and it’s brilliant. Thank you so much
👍
Training for my first half marathon. This advice is just what I needed to stay positive.
Awesome! Good luck and hope the tips help you!
Running my first half on December 23rd! Just running it by myself, no race to spur me on. Very excited!
Good luck! Let us know how you go
@@runningchannel Thanks, will do!
@@runningchannel As promised said I'd let you know, I completed it in 1hr47 with an average of 5:05 per KM!!
Ana thank you for your tips and pointers. I hope to use them on my first half marathon in November in San Francisco.
Let us know how you get on Robert!
These tips are awesome! I'm so thankful I found this channel. My first half is in 10 days!
Good luck!
This is a fantastic channel...keep up the good work guys.....Humorous and friendly
Thanks so much Christopher 🙌
that was really useful - a ton of tips i can apply - excellent. there's one thing i'd challenge: "it's ok to walk the entire half marathon" - thing is, these events are done on a tight budget and the organisers/local council start to dismantle the course after a set time
I am running my sixth half marathon on Sunday.
Good luck!
How did it go?
How was it?
“Take 13 weeks to train for a half marathon. Mine is tomorrow
Mine is next week
Mine is today😬
Less than 3 weeks. Lost 5 weeks training
Same for me now...
I have 8 weeks to train
Fair play Mo. Absolutely sensational effort!
"10-12 weeks to be ready to run the half marathon"... well... more like 36 years, but that will be different for everyone I guess :D
Never thought about nutrition before running ... or during... or at all, to be honest, so I definitly learned something here.
Ran my first half yesterday in 1 hour and 38 mins!
Congratulations! That’s awesome!! 🙌
That is an amazing time for your first ever half!!! Any tips? My first one I did last year was 2 hrs 20 mins 😄😄
My best is 1 hr 33 after 6 of them training for my first full this year.
Ran my first half today 🤯 thank you for all you do TRC 😁
Nice work David!
Running my first half marathon in September! Nervous and excited at the same time.
Exciting! Good luck with your training Sharon 😊

Running my first half marathon this weekend! Loved the advice!!
Really wonderful 🥰 ..keep sharing such inspiring videos .I shall be doing my first Half Marathon on 26 Feb ...thanks for such informative tips 🙏❤️
what i did for my half marathon, was half run half walk, take a break halfway through, take a 30 minute nap and eat a chocolate milkshake, then come beack and half run half walk the last 3 miles.
Thank you for this, what a great help for my first half in a few days!
Running is very essential part of our life.
Thank for your advices.

FINALLY someone noticed my haircut 💇🏻♀️😂 Thank you!! Haha (Anna)
I'm going to run my first half marathon with a friend tomorrow morning (socially distanced of course) and am both weirdly super excited and nervous
how did you get on?

You also don't have to run for as long a time on race day as you're going a lot faster than a training room which is part of why it's doable even if you've never ran that distance before
Running my second half marathon in two days I'm so excited looking for a sub two hour
how was it?? doing my first in 10 days:)
I haven't competed in a half marathon since i was 18. I ran my first half on my 18th bday and my 2nd half on my 19th. Iam now 27 and i miss it so much.

I often run this distance and longer now sometimes 2 times a week
However i remember first starting out as an older non runner in my late 30's

I was very sore and stiff legs for a week after that

The Running Channel It went well! It was hard around mile 8-10 as expected but I pushed through! Super proud of myself
Great advice! How many Halfs have you done now?
5 . In the last one I set my personal best to 1h 24 minutes 50 seconds
I have done 4 or 5 halfs now but never have had this info. Going to try some of this advice and see if I can get past that mile 10 wall that kills me😫
Good luck!
Last fall I did my first 10km cold turkey no training and it was only a little uncomfortable. Doing a half marathon in the spring and since I only need to do what I did 2x I feel 16 weeks is overblown. Was going to run a chill 5km and see my time and if that is manageable my training is done
I will be running my 1st half marathon this Sunday been training for a few months for it
Best of luck with it Shy, we hope the video helps.

That was 4 years ago
This next one is number 5
Ive lost count of the 1/2 marathons and trail runs up to 30k ive done but the marathon requires alot more trainning and commitment both mental and physical
Wish you all the best with your training
Remember the last 10k is a mental challenge telling you to keep going when the rest of your body wants to quit
Dont quit and when you cross that finish line you will be rewarded with an elation that you wont forget 👍🏃♂️😁

I Just run, don't care about the time!
It's my happy place, ran a half marathon race when i felt like it
On the Run/Walk discussion, it just causes me pain.
Lets say I am running 6 miles.
I run the mile 1, walk 1/4 mile and run the remaining 3/4 mile, walk 1/4 mile and run the remaining 3/4 mile, repeat
At around the 4th mile, my shin muscles are super tight and causes too much pain to run comfortably.
