That was a bittersweet era, when roughly half of the city's population pledged loyalty to a secular, liberal party, which was probably also the largest mafia in the world at that time, the MQM. The MQM gained popularity among the Muhajirs, who are the most affluent ethnic group in the country; we form a plurality in Karachi (~40%) and a minority (~7%) in Pakistan. Soon enough, the Pakistani military attempted to eliminate MQM with "Operation Cleanup", but the massacres of MQM party workers in the 90s only ended up making the MQM more popular and Muhajirs who once denounced fascism were now advocating for it. You cannot blame us. We watched our city slowly get destroyed by rural migrants, refugees and extremists. But eventually, the MQM lost popularity for its anti-nationalist rhetoric. I still hold the belief that some cultures are superior to others, but that doesn't excuse anti-nationalism. The US drone strikes over in the North forced us to sympathise with the Pakhtuns (from Pakistan and Afghanistan) we once despised. And ever since the War on Terror, Pakistan's middle class is actually now more religious than its working class, and most of Pakistan's middle class is concentrated in Karachi.

Great video, really enjoyed it, brought back memories of my time in Pakistan in mid 1980's, traffic. noise, rough roads, crowded streets, the general absence of women. Just love the artwork and bling on the trucks and buses in Pakistan! Not much has changed.
So weird... it's a city of men! Where did 50% of the population go? 40 minutes of film footage but barely a handful of women on the streets. Go to most other countries in Asia or Africa, it is so normal to see women hawkers... but not here.

Karachi was a great city before partition and even afterward for some time. I don't see a place to stand now. It's like our Old Delhi roads. These are the busiest parts of the city you are walking thru. This was my daily route for my university. Political corruption and military authoritarianism has changed this old city to worse. I grew up there but it's impossible for me to return and resettle. ILWIR.
Pakistan is one of the closest friends of us Turks. But the country needs to develop in a significant way. Great video, really enjoyed it, brought back memories of my time in Pakistan in mid 1980's, traffic. noise, rough roads, crowded streets, the general absence of women. Just love the artwork and bling on the trucks and buses in Pakistan! Not much has changed.

Karachi was a great city before partition and even afterward for some time. I don't see a place to stand now. It's like our Old Delhi roads.
