The iphone X has the older A11 SOC, while the XR has the newer A12, same as XS and XS max, that's why they're supporting it, but not the X.

Apparently there’s a huge jump in performance between the two chips
That being said the iPhone x has an oled display two cameras and smaller bezels
If they had the same years of support i would go for the x not the xr
