  • All aboard for this video tour of the site of the old Fords railway station on the Gawler to Morgan line.
Filmed with a DJI Mavic Mini and Pocket camera - both of which I'm still getting used to. I keep toying with Google Earth animations but I'm not sure they work very well. Let me know what you think.
The railway reached the region in 1860 and the goods shed was built around 10 years later. Theoretically this line is still open although clearly it's not.
Stick around for some bonus footage of a stone railway bridge over the Light River just south of Kapunda.

I was lucky that a farmer came by and let me onto his land closer to the building

How sad that we don't respect our heritage. The ARHS ran a Kapunda trip back in the 60's and on the return Rx 195 and consist ran through the goods shed. I still have a print but not digitised but there were lots of others on the trip who can perhaps up load of a photo of this event. The late DLH knew how to add just that little bit extra to a steam tour.

There appears to be no maintenance

I wonder if there’s any photographs that exist of the actual Fords railway station itself

I reckon you'd have to hit the National Railway Museum up. I scoured the web for public domain and copyright free images but there were none.

Congratulations South Australian governments for preserving all your regional train services.
So if you're thinking of taking a train to Mt Gambier, Wallaroo, Clare, Whyalla, Loxton, Burra, Marree or Angaston...............don't. Just move to Victoria where they have the largest regional train network in the southern hemisphere.

I agree. Might just do that...

@@Outdoorstype hahahaha........I am, can't wait to ride those V/line trains to Ballarat again.
I heard the Vic govt may be comtemplating a service from Southern Cross to Mt Gambier, I'd travel on it, great city Mt Gambier as opposed to that horrible dump called adelaide.

@@garynewton1263 There is an idea, but due to lack of maintenance, about $100 million needed. Bridges in Vic were upgraded not long before the line being closed down about 30 years ago and are still in good condition

yep Gough had a great idea - let the feds take over loss making state railways and SA & Tasmania agreed! what he forgot to do was make it a law that the infrastructure can never be privatised or leased out. All G&W did was run them into the ground until they were no longer economically viable even for grain and mineral sands!
Here is an example tax payers paid for the gauge conversion of the Loxton & Pinnaro lines. now they no longer run trains!
Yet Griffith/Leeton line which is a similar area to the Riverland had their line upgrade after years of neglect and now have a rail link to Appleton Dock.
The juice factory at Berri was finally killed off by transport costs! The juice factory at Leeton which is far smaller is still running! they were owned by the same company! What should happen now is the Morgan and Loxton lines should be reopened and the Morgan Line should be extended to Yamba and the Loxton Joined to it and continued to Victoria and who knows Hay NSW and beyond! Just like our forefathers envisaged!
Because we wont be running road trains in 20 years and need to start planning now!
