  • A historic look and modern day test of Honda's legendary 1983-1987 ATC200X. A model for the industry to follow, there has perhaps never been a sport ATV more perfect for its time than the Honda ATC200X. It was the ultimate fun machine for the masses. For many, it became the machine of choice for racing. For a select few, it paved the way for racing careers of legendary status.

That would be the best Christmas ever and the only way you could top that is to have two Honda ATC's under the tree! Or in your garage as it were. And someone to go riding with but nonetheless you couldn't then and you still can't now beat getting a Honda ATC for Christmas (or any other time of the year for that matter!)!!

Why do you guys like the X model I guess because it’s a four stroke. Wow I never new they even sold them in 87 though 86 was the last year most people had quads by then so. They sure are fun. I’m so glad I grew up were and when I did. Forget video games these things were way more fun. Although Nintendo and saga was fun even Atari I was a little too young for that though.

Thanks for an awesome video! This brought back so many memories! I grew up riding the ATC 110, the 200 S and later the 200 X but the 200 X is closest to my heart! I have ridden thousands of miles on one and I loved every one of them up until my last! In 2000 I was riding my 1985 200 X and I passed out from dehydration, hit a tree, broke my neck, pinched my spinal cord and became a quadriplegic. And I get so angry when people say "those 3-wheelers are so dangerous!" I always defend the ATC! I always tell them "I would get back on it right now if I could" and that is absolutely the truth! They are beautifully balanced, great running, great handling, reliable machines! And the more you ride them the more fun they are! Thanks again!

I can’t even tell you how many 110s and 185s ive drug out of the brush grown up around them, put in fresh grass, tubes in the tires, and rode em the same day. I’ve sunk them in ponds, tumbled down gravel piles and ditches.

I raced my 84 200X for 1 year in up-state New York, then before I left, I put in a Kerker stage 3 and sent the bottom end to Micky Dunlap and had it stroked. In 85 I moved to Florida and raced flat track at Orlando Speed World. I raced 1 race in the 185-200 division and everyone was a bit pissed, so I went up and raced the 350X class. I didn't lose a single race to them the entire season. Great bunch of guys, but were a bit clueless. When Honda came out with the Ohtsu bar tires, I was going around that track 3 seconds faster than before. They were amazing tires! Those were the days and I would dearly love to have them back. I sometimes dream I'm back in up-state NY, sitting in the staging area. Old dreams just don't die I suppose.

Later had a 86 250r. Loved those atcs. Buddy had a 86 200x, they were a huge leap over the previous gens. They finally got the kickstarter figured out so you didnt have to drop a boot in the water if it stalled. Between the 83 & 84 200x's and 86 250r I had a 85, 87 and 89 CR 250's. Mid '80s, couple friends and I found one deep in the woods, probably stolen. We were only 13 or so and none of us knew how to ride a manual clutch. We spent a couple hours figuring out how to start it, get it in gear and get it to move and then we took turns riding it. We considered keeping it hidden for ourselves, but that wouldve been tantamount to stealing it ourselves, so we left it where we found it.

Try to drive those on trails today is rough. The ruts are made by quads and makes that tire run high almost doing a wheelie constantly. My uncle owned a set of big reds all the way into the 2010s and they always ran no problem and were still in great shape.

Great video! I had a 1985 ATC 200X that I restored and rode form 1997 to 2000. Only minor things missed: PROS & CONS vs Quads - PROS: MUCH lighter steering and ability to make tight turns at LOW speeds. Super fun and best at lows speeds. CONS: You MUST learn that if you leg goes down to prevent a tip over - you must kick wide past the rear wheel to avoid running over you leg. Hitting a stone with just one rear wheel can over turn the rider or shock you to your senses - but the tilt used properly makes up for crappy straight 'live' rear axles. When you pass a tree, etc you MUST remember the rear is wider than the front! Hill climbs - The front is SO LIGHT it is hard to keep it down and from flipping over backwards - I welded a bash plate that doubled as a Wheelie bar and it saved me a few times. FINAL CON: Stock suspension was STIFF and left much to be desired. FINAL PRO: mystique - a "dangerous / outlawed" three-wheeler!
