    With the 2017 hitting the market, Yamaha looks to continue dominating the sport segment with their YFZ450R, Raptor 700R, Raptor 90, and all-new YFZ50. Meanwhile, the other manufacturers have tucked their tails and run, suffering from a lack of sales due to varying reasons such as releasing machines three years too late, an economic recession, attacks from the EPA, and, finally, for trying to continue selling 10-year-old machines at ever increasing prices. If you want to buy one of the top sport ATVs on the market these days, it’s going to be a Yamaha. The Raptor 700R is a great trail machine that can play on the MX track.
    The YFZ450R is a nearly race-ready motocrosser that comes setup from the factory to also perform on the trail. If you’re a motocross racer, choosing the right machine is simple: buy the YFZ450R, add a few parts, and go racing. If you are a recreational rider, choosing the right machine between the two could be a bit more perplexing. With this in mind, we took our YFZ450R and Raptor 700R test units to beautifully prepped and ATV friendly Nickota MX in Bedford, KY, and the diverse trails of Haspin Acres in Laurel, Indiana to see how these machines compare in the woods and on the track.
    If you are planning on going racing, the YFZ450R will be a better choice for most riders, not to say that you couldn’t turn a Raptor 700 into a viable race machine. For recreational and even somewhat aggressive riding, these machines are surprisingly well matched, but they reach their performance levels in different ways. If you like to push the outer boundaries of speed, suspension, and control a majority of the time and you don’t ride on tight trails, the YFZ450R may very well be the machine for you. The YFZ’s ergonomics, engine, firmer suspension, and squattier rider position aren’t as adept to long casual rides. Its focused primarily on going fast and it does it well.
    If you like extended rides and enjoy everything from a casual cruise to riding at a near race pace, the Raptor really shines. Its handling and suspension are optimized for tight to intermediate trails while offering predictable handling and performance on faster trails, the dunes, or even the track, up to a point. Its motor pulls holeshots, has a faster top-speed, and will conquer bigger sand dunes. Its handling and ergonomics work best for bigger riders though smaller riders may like the cockpit if comfort is a top priority.
    Results in sales numbers and championships on the track have proven that both of these machines are winners in their own right. If you’re addicted to the speed, light-weight, superior handling, and thrills that only a sport ATV delivers, one of these machines is sure to be a winner for you.

    I own both the Raptor 700R and the YFZ450R...both are 2014 orange, I've owned them since new. I have a lot of seat time on both machines and I have a few things to add...
    I love my Raptor...Its got great torque, its super easy to ride because of all the torque. It will take off in 3rd gear just by letting out the clutch, no gas. Its a great cruiser and can be driven through the trails one handed. Also great for very low speed technical riding, such as boon-docking through the woods with no trail.
    However once I got my YFZ450R I realized that it is the superior machine by far! compared to the Raptor the YFZ feel so much more planted on the trail. Its is much smoother over the whoops, not as smooth over small bumps but I have a greater feeling of control on the YFZ. Riding the Raptor after riding the YFZ I feel like I'm going to tip over, the CG is soo much higher on the 700.
    The motor on both machines are powerful and tough! After 3 season of HARD riding I have had zero mechanical problems, even with the rev limiter set at 11,500 RPM on the YFZ. The major difference in the two is the character of the motor..The Raptor 700 motor acts like a Harley..torquey and slower revving...The YFZ is more like a crotchrocket...high revving and very fast throttle response. The slipper clutch on the 450 is a wonderful addition, no wheel hopping on down shifts and much more control during heavy braking.
    The YFZ wants to be ridden hard..its not the machine for you if you want to ride the backroads doing wheelies with your buddies. The raptor on the other hand is happy to be ridden down the road in 4th gear for miles.
    At my house I have a 4 mile cross country track, The YFZ will finish a lap 2 minutes faster! Even with the trails being a tight ~50-55 inches wide.
    With all that being said the Raptor 700 is still a great quad, one of the best ever made..but for me the YFZR is the better machine.

      Travis agree with you 100℅ I have both also. I didn't realize how narrow and taller the raptor looked and felt. the midrange on the yfz is crazy but the torque on the rap you feel throughout. I personally prefer the yfz but still love the raptor. yammie definitely sewed up the market

    I had two Raptors. An '03 660, with a 700 big bore kit, stage 3 cam and duel exhaust, and a 2007 700r with PC II programmer and duel exhaust. My 700 was dynod 48hp at the rear wheels. My 660 was a hell of a lot faster (less weight, more power because of mods mentioned above), and I didn't have it dynod, but using the 700r as a basis, I'd have to guess the 660 was putting down an easy 55hp to the ground. I pulled wheelies in 5th gear. It was completely unrideable because it always tried to kill the rider.
    Both bikes are quite heavy, and you do feel it. The 700r in particular feels very very tall -- often times hard to handle on tight trails.
    I've since switched to a 2011 Polaris Outlaw 525s, and I love it. It's small, light, and when you rev it out, it's just as fast as my 660 was, but it has much more usable power. The 660 wanted to do a backflip in 1st gear, no matter how much you slipped the clutch or took it easy. The 525 isn't so insane, and it handles like a Ferrari on roids.

      I went with the Raptor 700 SE and my cousin went with the yfz 450 and his spends more time in the shop than actual ridding and mine has never had a problem and this makes his 3rd yfz450 and all have had electrical problems and in a straight race I've beat him every time as well as other rider's on the same type of machine. The Kawasaki wants the power that Yamaha has but they are still behind the mark but properly maintained both the yfz and Raptor are beasts. I change my oil once a year and never had a problem so oil changes after every ride is a myth it's just waisting money.

      Yamaha really crushed it with the 700. The 450 is a great race quad but it definitely geared towards serious competitors. I'll say from riding with and watching these two in tight steep trails in WV, the YFZ450R is NOT what you want. The YFZ450R is super wide in person in comparison. That makes a huge difference depending on where u ride. I'm not saying I'm all in for the 700R folks just need to choose the right machine for their needs. Best advice, find someone with one and ride it before buying one. Also, all the talk about less low end or less top end -- that can easily be changed with sprocket swap.. Just my $.02

      i know exactly how you feel. ive tried to get my parents buy one for 10 years. im 16 and my dad finally gave in to building a 660 with me. just keep trying to show them your interest, and be a good kid and do good and school and you may eventually get them to give in. start saving money also, a used warrior 350 is only about 1200$ on craigslist. if you work over summers, save up birthday money, you will be able to save up a decent chunk of money, and im sure if you do the things i said above your parents will help you a small amount on cost. once you have a used one, make sure your dad or mom rides it so they see how fun it is, also get your siblings hooked on it, and you may end up getting a new quad some day. good luck

    Great comparison- well done. Quick release panels also make it easier for them to be stolen- just throwing that out there. The 700 is a beast and having reverse out on the trails is a nice feature. I'm surprised the power is so close given the 700 is nearly double the displacement. My guess is the motor will last longer because with lower compression, it is not working as hard, or having to constantly rev as high.

Your review of the 700R helped me decide to move from a '14 Z400 to a '16 700R a few months ago. I'm very happy with the Raptor so far. I'm still playing around with the suspension settings, but it's almost there. Overall, it's darn close to perfect for trail riding. The power is great. I think the "R" stands for ridiculous speed, much more it would be ludicrous speed!!

    700R in my opinion is better I own one I use to own a the 450 yfz, but there is a massive difference, the 700R is a lot easier to ride way smoother and you don’t have to go to a lower gear to climb the power is always there cause of the torque on the 700r you can dump the clutch in first and you won’t stall it, the 450 definitely lacked throttle response compared to the 700R and also on the 450 you needed certain gears for climbing had to use the lower gears otherwise the power wasn’t there comfortability wise I rather the 700R this is my opinion don’t get hurt.

You notice how easily the raptor stands up when racing?, imagine it doing that while climbing a hill and you have to go over a big root or rock but keep on the throttle hard and it goes and stands up... it wont be fun. The ergonomics and handling are beyond great and I dont feel it is rough in the trails with small bumps(I have stock suspension, just set it up for yourself, fyi Im 6ft and dont feel cramped on it at all). I have no problem riding this thing all weekend long, its comfortable. The raptor is just to top heavy and yes the riders in this video did a good job of riding it but even they had the front end walk to the outside of a turn (either that or it wouldve rolled if they didnt straighten out and slow down) and theyre professionals. Im sorry but the raptors have always been good in the dunes but anywhere else I think the yfz wins. Yamaha tried to fix the top heaviness from the 660 but its just too tall and is more set for someone who rides trails in 1st and 2nd gear because otherwise its going to feel like its going to tip on them. Also the yfz450r isnt too wide, i have my axle extended to the width of the front and never have problems in the woods. If you feel like you want it narrower get a yfz450x (made for the trails) it was only made 2010-2011 I believe but its reduced to I think 46in. Personally I would never own a raptor unless it was for a kid (50 or 90cc) and I never have problems climbing hills in the sand or dirt, it laughs at them

      Not trying to boost either machine's sales over the other, just trying to help people pick the right machine for them. Our riders were split as to which they would rather own. We didn't mention that in the video. Yes the YFZ450R is more stable. I thought we demonstrated that and explained it. We believe you underestimate the Raptor's handling somewhat. If your used to a YFZ450R or other wider sport model and jump on the Raptor it feels a little more top heavy, If you're used to the Raptor it is a good solid handling machine although its not a race quad like the YFZ. It sounds like you already got the right machine for you. Thanks for watching and commenting.

    • @jaretaustin14
      @jaretaustin14 8 лет назад +1

      not saying you didn't display the yfz is more stable just think you criticized it to much for trails riding and made the raptor seem pretty equal on the track except in corners and large jumps. it is still a good video and I'm sure helps a lot of people, just giving my experience with both and why I chose the yfz. I owned a warrior before the yfz and had rode my dad's raptor and still prefer the yfz. just been my experience (not as much with 700's I will admit) that raptors are just too top heavy for fast trails and if you like field riding or slow to medium trails or dunes then the raptor is for you. again good video just my opinion

    • @ATVonDemand
      @ATVonDemand  8 лет назад +1

      We totally welcome your opinion. Just wanted to set the second straight that we weren't intentionally favoring one machine over the other. IN Fact, we agree with a lot of your points. We just happen to think you underestimate the performance of the Raptor, although it does favor riding at less than a full on race pace. compared to the YFZ. Again, thanks for the input.

    Been trail riding sport quads and big MX bikes for 12 years. Had a 2012 Raptor 700R, the machine is just so good at everything, it's amazing. HOWEVER, if you want the next closest thing to a two stroke, get the 450, even if you ride strictly trails. You will overlook some of it's less trail-friendly aspects because you will be having so much fun with the motor. Very similar to a two-stroke engine.

    The first problem with both the yfz and the raptor is that if you're not built like a jockey, you're not going to want to spend much time riding them. Yamaha has always made notoriously small bikes and back when I was 14 I bought a banshee...by the time I was 16 I was hurting at the end of the day because at 6'2"...the damn thing(s) are too small...as are most sport quads.
    Second of all, yammi is comparing apples to oranges. They're comparing their flagship race motor in a low cg frame designed for the track to what amounts to a grizzly motor in a frame designed for trail riding or bashing at the gravel pit.
    Since I'm not 5'5" like a jockey and I'm also a longtime jap bike hater...I'll stick to my 05 650 baja when I want to play. The bike actually fits me, still has huge dealer & aftermarket support and regularly reels in and passes raptors. When I want to cruise I'll ride the outty...that works great for dragging burned down yamahas out of the woods.

      From our understanding, the EPA went after Can-Am and Suxuki for breaking their communist guidelines. Remember the Cherry Bomb from Yoshimura and the other versions offered by other exhaust manufacturers? All those did was tell the ECU to switch from the EPA compliant fuel map to a dirty fuel map which added a bunch more horsepower and performance. Because Suzuki included the dirty map with the machine they were facing HEAVY fines. Between the fines and the economic downturn of 2008 they decided to ditch the machine. Too bad, it was regarded as one of if not the best handling production performance ATV ever manufactured. Suzuki should being it back if they care at all about being as relevant as they once were.

    I still own a 660 Raptor. Still runs great but you have to clean the carbs from time to time. I live in town and don't get to ride as much as needed, carbarator speaking. My Raptor does the Rocky Mountain Trails as good as the 700 Grizzly. I love the trails west of Yellowstone the most, the lily ponds are absolutely breathtaking.
    I wish the government would allow riders to go off road and trail. Then the Grizzly could stretch it's real off trail abilities. Unfortunately that will never happen...kind of takes away the desire for a utility model.

    • @ATVonDemand
      @ATVonDemand  5 лет назад

      You might want to consider running a little fuel stabilizer. It will help prevent your carburetors for becoming so gummed up with this modern fuel. The 660 had a ton of torque. That thing could lug its way up a mountain. We think the four-wheel drives are a lot of fun in the fall and winter. Keeps you a little cleaner, makes things a little easier. You are right though. Most of the trails that we encounter can be written by two wheel drive sport ATV. Thanks for watching and commenting.

      The Suzuki Z400 is the most overlooked, underappreciated sport ATV. Suzuki still has left over 2014s listed on their website, which for trail riders is a superb ATV. Consumers hung up on having 450s or largely overlooked the Z, which has a good amount of power, especially for woods riding. Suzuki should update the swingarm and boost the displacement to 450cc just so they could market it as a new 450 aimed at the GNCC or cross country style rider. The company needs some new models and this would give them the opportunity to compete in a smaller, but far less competitive segment than dirt bikes or UTVs. Are you listening Suzuki?

      The funny thing is you could buy a TRX250R build it somewhat buy a trailer and gas for a year for half the price of one of these.

    700r is top speed, yfz is acceleration, and also above all that 700r is cheaper to get from the dealership than 450 for some reason 😂

    I do miss my Honda 450r. stage 2 race cam, modded air box and intake, full titanium exhaust. the whole nine yards right sown to little things like braided brake lines then dyno'd and tuned by a shop. bitch ate Raptor 700's for breakfast. occasionally lost on long straight away but the acceleration usually made sure I was far enough a head. raced a Eclipse By. smoked it up to 148. Porsche thought I was playing too but I was not he only caught me at 130 lol. shit was beast. I bought it brand new then dropped 7,000 easy into it. 4,000 into the engine alone the first 2 years I had it.

    YFZ450 for aggressive riding, Raptor 700 for cruising and put-putting. Both totally different. Been riding for my entire life.

      Been 4 years so I probably won’t get a reply but…. Lol.
      I’m in the market for a new bike. 2022 Yfz 450r or the raptor 700r. My riding will consist of woods, dirt/gravel roads, and hard top. Having a hard time choosing what will fit me. I wanted the Yfz but more I look the raptor seems more what I should be getting. What one would you recommend?

      LOLZ Yea because you should put an independent rear suspension in a sport quad. Dumbass.

      JakeTheSn4ke939 if you do not take it the track, it's probably a great quad. I never tried it but it seems like it would suck on your back without rear suspension.

      robby6511 I’ve tested them in a head to head race the 700 has a tiny bit more power the 450 has a wider stance which is better for going around corners it just handles a lot better than the 700

      I would say raptor 700 is better...I raced my 2020 raptor 700r vs 2020 yfz 450 se and beat that and trx 450 quads allday the 700r pulls harder and right past 450s allday everyday only thing 450 has is better cornering

  • @jasonneal
    @jasonneal 5 лет назад +1

    The TRX is hands down the best motor and transmission. Yeah it doesn’t have the best stock suspension, but your going to pay about $3k less for a brand new quad and you can take that money and purchase a bad ass aftermarket suspension that would outperform the YFZ all the way.

    I have both love them for different reasons. one thing I don't like about the 700 is it has a wet clutch but you can't clutch less shift it

    • @connor3288
      @connor3288 4 месяца назад

      I guarantee you can, wet or dry clutch has nothing to do with being able to clutchless shift, 700 has dog gears like any other atv/motorcycle manual trans, just need to unload gears by blipping or chopping throttle for downshifts or upshifts.
