  • “Beethoven’s Ninth” is a music documentary on the occasion of the 250th birthday of Ludwig van Beethoven. To this day, Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony is one of the most popular pieces of classical music around the world. In this 90-minute film, you will discover new interpretations of the famous Ninth, performed by passionate musicians.
Watch as Greek conductor Teodor Currentzis works on Beethoven’s Ninth with his ensemble, MusicAeterna. Or observe Chinese composer and Oscar winner Tan Dun as he creates a new composition inspired by the great Beethoven symphony. Experience first-hand the Orchestre Symphonique Kimbanguiste in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, as they interpret the Ninth, in part using instruments built by the musicians themselves. Visit a favela in Brazil, where Beethovens’s music helps people get off the streets. Be amazed as a choir of 10,000 in Japan sings the “Ode to Joy,” the final chorus of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, with great enthusiasm. Learn how Paul Whittaker helps make Beethoven, who himself became deaf, accessible for deaf people. And find out how British DJ Gabriel Prokofiev performs a symphonic remix of Beethoven’s Ninth.
At the end of this musical journey, you will see that in every country on the globe, people dream of a better world in which human beings can live as brothers and sisters. In playing and singing Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, this dream becomes true, if only for a moment. A breathtaking documentary about the greatest symphony of all times - shot in Shanghai, Osaka, Sao Paolo, Salzburg, Kinshasa, Barcelona and Bonn.
    Starring:
    Teodor Currentzis
    Tan Dun
    Gabriel Prokofiev
    Yutaka Sado
    Armand Diangienda
    Paul Whittaker

You don't listen to the Ninth with your ears - you hear it, feel it with your Heart & Soul. No coincidence the deafness of the Composer.

I had listened to 9th recordings many times in my home.
All recordings lack, due to limits of the speakers, etc.
I finally went to a live performance (NJ Symphony, New Brunswick venue) about ten years ago.
    It was shocking.
    I couldn't stop shaking.
When the 4th movement came around, the 4 soloists were just spellbinding.
The harmonies were such that I could not have imagined.
Compared to the LPs I had listened to for years, it was X10.
Everyone should attend a quality live performance of this seminal work.

Thank you so much to the producers of this documentary, it made me cry of joy. It's amazing how is showed the reaction of people with deafness listening to the Ninth Symphony; I could suppose that Beethoven had the same reaction when the symphony was premiered. Also, it's beautiful when you see that people with other languages, other cultures feel very connected with the Ninth Symphony; it makes me think that the Ninth Symphony is the symphony of human civilization. I have a dream in my life, and that dream its to travel to Beethoven's house and there to say: thanks master for all your legacy to humanity!

Beethoven created beauty in the midst of his suffering. This is a great symphony that represents just that. The idea of bonding or fraternalism when he himself was in isolation. I am looking forward to studying this symphony in-depth in the future. This is one of my favorite Beethoven works, along with the Missa Solemnis in D-Major. This is a great documentary exploring Beethoven's greatest symphonic masterpiece.

That´s exactly the opposite of what Beethoven intended.(That´s why he was also useless for the Nazis later on, by the way). I read that Beethoven even wanted to make sure that there were not any hints to Christianity in the lyrics (or any other religion or religious group) so that nobody would be excluded - meaning: he wanted the lyrics to speak to everyone!

How would you rank Beethoven's symphonies? I'd go with:
    1. 9th
    2. 3rd
    3. 5th
    4. 6th
    5. 7th
    6. 8th
    7. 4th
    8. 1st
    9. 2nd
9th and 3rd are so universally acclaimed, that's it's not a surprise, 9th has more of the grandeur that I find more appealing. I had a harder time picking between 5th, 6th, and 7th. 5th has absolutely legendary outer movements, so I picked it 3rd, while the 6th is strong overall with a more gentle mood when, 7th maybe has the most rousing final movement after incredible movements 1 and 2. 8th is very cleverly composed, but lacks any proper slow movement, 4th has an amazing fast part of the 1st movement, but it doesn't strike that deeply emotionally. Symphonies 1st and 2nd aren't as good as the rest, they have more classical period characteristics. Early piano sonatas by Beethoven are already very strong musically, but he truly found his very own orchestral language in the 3rd symphony. 1st has more compelling subjects than the 2nd for me. , I know you like the 2nd more.

5th is actually more famous than the 3rd. And for some people, than the 9th. A sample of the 5th was included in one of the Voyagers when sent to space

This symphony is a mirror, it allows the listener to hear the tempo of their lives. There is happiness, sadness and jubilation. If this piece moves you emotionally then you are hearing it. If its just the combination of instruments, you are only listening...and that is unfortunate
