I was there. Bret DID receive an enormous pop, which people seem to ignore. Austin was mixed, but Bret did tear the house down when he came out. By the time Bret left, fans were booing the hell out of him. Masterful job of changing roles.

Obviously other wrestlers have done it before, but nobody's done and will never again pull off the double-turn like Bret Hart and Steve Austin did in 1996-97.
That's what made it so good. Both guys gradually assimilated into the roles they full-on assumed at WrestleMania. Bret with the "crybaby" angle, and Austin with the anti-authority attitude who didn't care what anyone thought of him.

I'm always curious how many people were truly there who claim to be there. I'm seeing this more & more of people claiming to have been there, ya know, wherever it is you're talking about.
Seemed like it's a new thing. Everyone's always gotta be there and shit.

@@Bandana_Boi You do realize that's a big stadium right? Plenty of seats for people to occupy & therefor can have a legit claim to being there. Or do you think the stadium was empty? Or perhaps you simply don't like the idea of someone actually vouching for Bret getting a big reception? I watched it live, and I remember Bret getting a big pop as well.

Bret's audible the day of the match to give Austin color was the right choice despite the no blood policy in the WWF at the time. It truly added an incredible amount of drama to the ending and provided one of the most enduring images for years to come with that close up of Austin's face suffering in the Sharpshooter.

Something I love about the Bret Austin fued is how great and justifiable, for lack of a better term, both character are. Austin is the next big thing, a ton of fun and people love him. He takes advantage of what’s in front of him, even if it isn’t by the rules. Bret is the old school, been around the block face, who, rightfully, is angry that he was cheated out of matches. He is annoying and a heel but a heel who makes sense. Plus the undertone of how he had payed his dues and is somehow more deserving then the new cheating Austin is just great. I know this comment is just me rambling but I just love this feud.

As Stone Cold said himself, Bret Hart saw him coming before Stone Cold knew he was there. Bret Hart didn't have to go heel after the match, but Bret Hart is a professional. @Matt M 1989 was the year that made me a wrestling fan. Savage, Warrior, Boss Man, Akeem, Rick Rude, Jake Roberts, Dibiase, and of course, Hogan were all at the top of their game. The tag team division was as good as it's ever been. Hart Foundation, Demolition, Brain Busters, Rockers, Twin Towers, and the Mega Powers.
As good as Raw was in the late 90's I think Saturday Night's Main Event in 1989 and 1990 is probably the best television a pro wrestling company has ever produced.
