This pay-per-view holds a special place in my heart This was the first WWF show that I had ever seen. My cousin was babysitting me in the spring of 99 and we were both huge WCW fans. One day he says we are going to watch the WWF me having no idea what that was(I was 6 at the time) my cousin also decided that we should place our lunch money on the outcomes of matches. He won every match and predicted everything that was going to happen! He even knew who would win the Royal Rumble! He got my lunch money only for me to figure out he had slipped up and said that Austin won the rumble then changed it to Mr McMahon. My cousin watched the event the day before, rewound the tape and then weaseled me out of my 10 dollars. I may have lost the money, but I gained a new appreciation for the WWF and was a fan from that day forward.
As difficult as it was to watch for some I found the drama of the “I Quit” match very enthralling & it give Mankind more of that favourite underdog Rocky vibe and whether you hate it or not the 10 brutal Chairshot finale puts it up there with the most memorable matches and got many to feel for real which is rare in Wrestling otherwise it would have been just another throwaway Heel wins title match before the Royal Rumble
Fun fact: Aaron Rift from NoDQ was sitting near the guy with the "hardcore porn champ" sign at 19:12. Not only do I remember him mentioning that once but I actually recognized him, he's the guy reach both arms out near the guy with the sign at the timestamp I gave.
Wrestling With Wregret- According to Jason "The Solomonster" Solomon, he needs ruined something else about what you talked about around 14:30-14:42 in an episode of his podcast from the fall of 2021, I believe. According to him, he said that Mick Foley & The Rock agreed on 5 chair shots, but, The Rock gave him double the amount & sometime in the backstage area after the match was over, The Rock never checked up on Mick Foley to see if he was O.K. after the match & for quite a while, Mick Foley held a grudge with The Rock, but, they eventually patched things up, they were cool with each other, they moved on & the rest is history.
Brian Zane! Excellent Choice, I just recently rewatched this entry myself and I was just remembering how dumb it was to book Vince to win this Rumble just for the sake of a swerve and to extend the story. They could of did this differently. But they made it to Mania which is what matters
24:53 I always love the timing of that fan, hitting Vince with a cup, or balled up paper. Vince, the consummate professional, flinched, but otherwise ignored it! I thought it was telling, even though I normally hate fans throwing things, or getting too involved. Actually, I'm a bit of a Hypocrite on the 2nd one! Before the Pandemic I was at Raw in Montreal, had seats in the pit, right along the railing entrance. Best seats ever. Anyway. I did get involved in the show, but not intentionally. Corbin was running away from Strowman and tried to hide behind me. I snitched on him, by waving my arms, just to let Braun know where Corbin was. The actual t.v. broadcast missed some of it but I am there, forever a very, very, very, minor part of RAW fan History. Lol I'm the stalky white guy, with a black shirt, shaved head and sun glasses. I wanted to stand out! I had two signs. One for the Friendos and the Other for The Z man. Good times!
I use to rent this one a lot as a kid. I loved the I Quit match, the multi-faction feud, the overbooked storytelling in the Rumble, and Austin kicking Vince's ass... now in hindsight I realized why Vince Russo shouldn't be a booker anymore
I'm sorry but that Boss Man impression caught me completely off guard. So funny. 🤣🤣 Also completely agree with your review, great job as always. It's a really fun event. I love rumble matches and, even though it's unconventional, it worked.
Mr Bryan Zane I want to thank you for an excellent excellent episode. I bought tickets for this event and I can still h hear the kids crying, the women screaming and all the guys including me chanting One More shot. Thanks again brother
I remember a shoot interview with Luna and Gangrel, she said that she was told that if Sable got injured in this match, she’s fired (I can’t remember who it was, but she said that she knew it came from Vince). Then, when the match was over and Luna got backstage, nobody said a word to her, but when Sable got back there, everyone was clapping, cheering, and telling her how great she did. Luna then said she went into a corner to cry, and Owen Hart came up to her, told her she wrestled a good match, and stayed there with her when she was crying.
This PPV is one of the greats. The Royal Rumble match was a peak Attitude Era match, Vince runs the gamut as a heel from cocky to groveling, and the “I Quit” match has become famous/infamous in light of the context (CTE, Mick’s young family at ringside, and The Rock’s future stardom). The Ministry kidnapped Mabel, Kane eliminated himself to chase the funny farm staff through the crowd, and Austin drove himself back to the arena in an ambulance. What more could you ask for in 1999?
Luna never getting to be Women’s Champion will never not be a disappointment. That Rock vs. Mankind match will never not be hard to watch. And seeing Mick’s wife and kids freaking out in the crowd makes it all the worse.
I love all the modern wrestling vernacular the main wrestling youtube channels share, OSW, NL, WB, WWW. These channels get people over that WCW or WWE could never get over.
I get why you’re giving 3.5/5 stars to the rock vs mankind. Totally respect it, but I think that match it’s legendary. Just a classic from the attitude era. Also, helped the rock build that ruthless heel persona. I think it’s a minimum 4/5. Keep the great work!
I always thought the count error was Long counting two different falls because it looked like Gangrel was being pinned first then X-Pac was, but I guess I was giving them more credit than I realised XD
In retrospect this was the problem with Foley. His reputation and gimmick was such that you basically had to beat him to death as a shoot to get a win over him. Hence in 2023 we got every 160 pound dude ( and 120 lady) with a pair of tights no-selling sh*t until they actually are concussed with broken limbs or arterial bleeding.
The 1999 Royal Rumble event bummed out a young Brian Zane but, quite frankly, this is my personal favorite review of the Classic PPV Review series. Not just because of 1:17 (thank you, Z-man) but because the 1999 Royal Rumble took place in Anaheim, California, which is 10 minutes from my city. Thank you, Brian Zane. Despite your disappointment, the 99 Royal Rumble event holds a huge place in my wrestling-fandom heart. :)
This was the first PPV I got to watch. A classmate's older brother had a black box, they were nice enough to record it for me. It'll always have a special place in my heart
I was there live. My third PPV live (I was also at Mania IX, WCW Bash At The Beach 1995, and later Mania 2000). It was fun, but weird live because of how much was done backstage with Austin and McMahon. Rock and Foley was crazy.
Living in the UK and only going to a couple of house shows and a TV taping in my time, I know that sometimes it's not the quality of the show but the atmosphere and all these PPVs would have had that in spades, but dang, did you pick some weird shows to attend. There's historic matches for the right and wrong reasons on every one of those cards.
@@Joe90h Oh I know. Mania IX is considered near the bottom of the list, but to be there in person you don't get that feeling. I mean we in the crowd didn't even know Hogan really won the title, we thought it was just him sending the crowd home happy. The Bash in 95 was just insane at the actual beach in the heat. Then there's Mania 2000, which had the match that would later be known as TLC. Also met a woman at Mania 2000 who was so convinced that Kane was really unable to speak, that I couldn't bring myself to tell her that he had no issues talking when he was Isaac Yankhem. And I've been to several RAW and Smackdown tapings that were great too, including the one and only match featuring Cena, HBK and Hulk Hogan as a tag team. I was seriously considering going to the Rumble tomorrow (I now live in San Antonio), but I just don't know if I'd have the same feelings I had for these shows.
@@thescott7539 There was a Smackdown TV taping I went to in either late 2006 or early 2007 in Birmingham (The UK one, not the Alabama one) here Mr Kennedy was getting up in Teddy Long's face about something or other, and the smart part of me suspected the Undertaker wasn't in the country so I prepared for disappointment. The atmosphere in the crowd when he actually said "I'm putting you in a match tonight against the Undertaker!" was electric, and if nothing else, I got to see that entrance in person, so it didn't matter that I can't remember a single other thing that happened on that night. I might hit up Cage Match and figure out the night and what the card was.
I practically shidded myself when I saw the date for that buried alive match between Austin and Undertaker That's quite literally the day I was born. December 13th of 1998.
10:47 I’m not that much older that you Brian so I remember watching this when I was around 15 or 16 and this match was brutal to watch then and still brutal now. I think what really drove it home was watching “Beyond The Mat” documentary. Yea we know the ins and outs of this business for the most part but seeing his kids crying and his wife being uncomfortable really broke my heart.
11:01 have this picture signed by mick himself. i wasn't old enough at the time, but watching it back through all the years of my life that moment and title win was just so well done. can't top moments like that/
Vince winning this Rumble was a wake up call for me that I wasn't going to enjoy pro wrestling much in the next decade. Him booking himself as a world champion felt inevitable and it just wasn't something I wanted to see. This really did mark the decline in my watching which is weird because the Jan 4th Raw was and is one of my favorite wrestling moments ever.

The 99 Rumble wasn't a rumble it was a 1 on 1 match with 28 run ins
Love the Wrestling Bios "Mufuggin" nod there Brian! Lol
24:53
I always love the timing of that fan, hitting Vince with a cup, or balled up paper.
Lol
I'm the stalky white guy, with a black shirt, shaved head and sun glasses. I wanted to stand out!
I had two signs. One for the Friendos and the Other for The Z man. Good times!
"Vince Russo as Vince Russo that is most Roussest." That's a phrase for another Wrestling With Wregret t-shirt.
I use to rent this one a lot as a kid. I loved the I Quit match, the multi-faction feud, the overbooked storytelling in the Rumble, and Austin kicking Vince's ass... now in hindsight I realized why Vince Russo shouldn't be a booker anymore
The bossman impression had me dying 😂😂😂😂😂. Spot on 😂
I'm sorry but that Boss Man impression caught me completely off guard. So funny. 🤣🤣
Also completely agree with your review, great job as always. It's a really fun event. I love rumble matches and, even though it's unconventional, it worked.
24:09 Vince's head bouncing off the rope into the mat looked brutal.
I couldn't stop replaying it over and over. Hilarious, but definitely brutal.
Mr Bryan Zane I want to thank you for an excellent excellent episode. I bought tickets for this event and I can still h hear the kids crying, the women screaming and all the guys including me chanting One More shot. Thanks again brother
Happy birthday, Zane! You are truly a gift, don't ever forget that
I remember a shoot interview with Luna and Gangrel, she said that she was told that if Sable got injured in this match, she’s fired (I can’t remember who it was, but she said that she knew it came from Vince).
Is the Steve Blackman joke from @WrestlingBios, or part of a bigger joke I’m just unaware of??
Wrestling Bios will be happy that you called Steve ‘Mufuggin’ Blackman by his true name.
Always nice to time morning coffee to the drops for these. Nothing better than hot coffee & a Classic PPV Review.
Tell me Brian didn't play that soundbite of Vince at 23:50 on purpose. Shit is spot on in light of everything we now know. 🤣🤣🤣
Great review and your impressions of Bossman & Vince amongst other have me rollin' 🤣
Early Kurt in that mask in the vignette is hilarious
Fun fact: First RR in 8 years that did not feature Bret Hart Shawn Michaels or The Undertaker in the WWF title match
Yes! I remember watching this live on PPV and seeing Gangrel's entrance and seeing those guys moving back and forth and laughing my ass off!
Always look forward to the Classic PPV's. Well done as usual, BZ
They’re great
Luna never getting to be Women’s Champion will never not be a disappointment.
I remember watching this live and realizing how much I missed Vince on commentary since before Survivor series 97
Shout out to Wrestling Bios for that reference @ 19:56
Loved this show, this was the 'Empire strikes Back' show of the Attitudes era
This is such a great video very entertaining . The Jeff Jarrett bit where he's the most employed person in wrestling cracked me the hell up 😅😅😅
" back to the shitter " may very well be the greatest single line in the history of this channel
0:03 not the Mario 64 lmao
1. (10:30-26:45)
*What we've ALL been waiting for*
2. (19:57-19:59; 25:24-25:27; 27:26-27:29)
*Another rare f-bomb by Brian Zane*
I practically shidded myself when I saw the date for that buried alive match between Austin and Undertaker
That's quite literally the day I was born.
Nice shout out to wrestling bios 🤣🤣
You two are my favorite channels!
It's a genuine miracle that Mick Foley is even alive today.
11:01 have this picture signed by mick himself. i wasn't old enough at the time, but watching it back through all the years of my life that moment and title win was just so well done. can't top moments like that/
That part with Mario was so funny I fell out laughing lol! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Captain Lou Albano
Who did we see around 9:34-9:37 attacking Luna Vachon, again?...
I crack up every time Zane mocks the weird stuff wrestlers scream
JR did work Royal Rumble backstage. Beyond the Mat showed him giving Lawler instruction on his lines.
Wrestling Bios will be proud you finally got Steve Blackman said right. 👍
We're the same age. I knew I subbed for a reason. You're like that one buddy that helps you remember the good days.
Steve "Mafuggin" Blackman! Yay, Wrestling Bios!
Forceable Entry is also the mantra Vince abides by in his life in general
feat. Rita Chatterton
"Most employed man, Jeff Jarret", why this line isn't on a T-shirt is beyond me, xD
I'm also a mark for Wrestling Bios.
i just turned 37 yesterday and im just like you i have a lot of wrestling memories, facts, knowledge and for the simple fact that theres a TIGER ALI SING reference in the video is AWESOME lol
I remember having a “Rumble” after the PPV in the yard where about 10 of us got together to watch this show.
😂😂😂
Oh to be a teenager
😂😂
18:40 makes me laugh uncontrollably! Always love your impressions, Brian!
WrestlingBios Steve mufuggin' Blackman in tha house!
