Hi everyone! Just wanted to give a fair warning that the editing here might be a bit sloppier than usual, especially in the second half. That's mostly because this project took me a lot longer than anticipated due to being busy with my studies at Uni, and I really wanted to get it done so I could move on to other projects. Hopefully there's nothing too jarring on display here! Enjoy the video and let me know your thoughts!

tbh Blossom's personality change may seem creative at first but she's basically a stereotypical ditzy magical girl leader, which is a really worn out trope for the magical girl genre (even for 2006) I get that most magical girl leads are written to be "relatable" and ultimately they mature towards the end of the series, but it would've been nice to have more of Blossom's original traits :(((

While I love that they made Buttercup aka Kaoru more tomboyish, that she could easily be mistaken for an actual one, I also really dislike what they did to Blossom aka Momoko. She was so smart and rational in the original cartoon but in order to give her the typical Shōjo heroine personality they made her a lot ditzier and also weirdly obsessed with boys. I can understand why you dislike the rowdyruff boys so much but I'd like to clear up some things and explain the reason why they are portrayed as they are in this show. The nasty things they do are seen as childish and immature, grade school humor. From the perspective of a middle school girl this kind of behaviour is seen as extremely undesirable and is not usually done by guys within that age bracket (hence why the annoying kid in that one episode was hated so much). The other thing is they were made to be the antithesis to what magical girls are. One theme of magical girls is growing up and maturity, a quality the rowdy ruff boys are extremely far from. They are meant to be disgusting and annoying, you're meant to hate them lol. Sorry for the long wall of text. From the video it just felt like you were struggling to understand why they were written that way.
About that it really only aired in the UK version of Cartoon Network as a English dub it never actually got put on the Cartoon Network on the USA/Canada AT ALL.
AHAH!!! I used to always copy their transformation dance(?) Whenever I was alone. I guess ppgz is my first introduction to magical girl. I love this anime so much as a kid. The song slap especially OP 1 and ED 1,2,3. Also thank you for link! I really love seeing concept art❤❤
I watched this in its days when magical girl series is high in demand (tokyo mew mew, mermaid melody, precure, etc). I didn't really saw anything to be problematic. And i rewatched it in pandemic era, and my opinion didn't change Most review (or usually video essay) of this show will compare main cast personality to the original series, yeah that's inevitable. But the thing is the main cast isn't in kindergarten age, they are in middle school and they also aren't professor's kid but are teammate just like any magical girl series. Hence i treat them as different character that didn't really need to compare to the original
I think the uniqueness of PPGZ is what makes it truly brilliant. It makes the show stand out as more than just a translated version for a different audience to a show that build on a foreign premise but expanded into its own identity. The PPGs being regular middle schoolers who never met before allows for them to bond with each other as they learn each other, rather than being siblings who grew up together and are thus familiar. The addition of Ken not only gives the PPGs a little brother of sorts to add to their psuedofamily, but it also means it isn't just Utonium communicating with the girls. This show shouldn't be seen as just a spin off of PPG but instead as a stand alone series.
So I wasn't crazy... I remember when this show came out people were going out of the way to say it was a more mature and cool than the original, so started watching it and for me it was so boring, I liked the characters but the episodes didn't seen to go anywhere and the long format was quite bad because I remember having lots of nothing scenes to fill space. Also felt quite bad for this Buttercup because she was forced to accept using clothes she disliked and as a girl who hated using dresses and skirts, and was forced many times to a point I cried, it always made me feel super sad watching her and hoped at least had a episode talking about how forcing you to present in a way you dislike makes you feel like trash...

@@senritsujumpsuit6021 I got that when I first watched it but thought I was missing something because I could only see it as a kids show with low stakes, even lower than what I was used too, even Corrector Yui had death, and like that's not a problem but like imagine a new show come out and everyone is going out their way to say is mature and adult show you watch it and is Hamtaro, and everywhere you look you see people calling it mature and for teens, you think you're going crazy lol But in the end the show wasn't for me at all and that's ok.
@@senritsujumpsuit6021 These talking points was when the show was being released in 2006 so a lot of uncertainty and theories were rampant, and wasn't uncommon to shojo to put heavy stuff like Cardcaptor Sakura and many others did, so was a lot of people were really wishful thinking the show would pull the curtain and become something more mature because it was an anime.
it was an easy sell for me as a kid, it was Powerpuff Girls, i liked anime and Pretty Cure, i was 9, but somewhere along the way something just clicked and it just turned me bitter. and most of that comes from what they did with Blossom; i did not like this Usag Tsukino-colored paint they coated her in, and i guess you can make the argument that "oh that's not blossom that's momoko" and sure but then why even adapt at all
The Rowdyruff boys pretending to be them episode sounds like the "maximum security prisoners pretend to be the PPG" episode. But the joke is that there's conveniently a cosplay wardrobe they can use and the town is really stupid. Here it's just they're sincerely in belief they're potentially real. It's weird.
Yeah, that's a minor thing I didn't really mention in the video. For Snake at least, I'm pretty sure it was a mistake on the part of Ocean Productions, Inc. since he's male in the sub. They might've seen his appearance as more female-presenting and had a female voice him, but I'm not really sure.
I personally don't think Powerpuff Girls Z is as bad as you make it out to be. I had fun watching the anime and love how different they made this compared to the original PPG. Definently better then the garbage reboot but that's no contest when you think of it.
I found out that the more I understand Japanese, the better this reboot gets. There are just too many nuances that can't be conveyed with subs, no matter how good they are, and those made all the difference for me. Compared to when I was 14, when I first watched this anime, I have found a much better appreciation for DPPGZ when I rewatched it at 26. And let's be real here, the opening and ending songs are fire! Also, if you're watching the dubbed version, you're watching it wrong. The English localization changed the opening and ending songs, character names, personalities, etc. I don't know why they decided to go for a lighter approach using the magical genre when Precure is THE most popular Magical Franchise in Japan. It started airing in Japan in July 2006, at which point Futari wa Pretty Cure had already proved itself a major success airing between February 2004 and January 2006. It could have totally worked as a more action oriented show and audiences would have loved it.
Don't know about the English dub for PPGZ, but the Latin American Spanish dub managed to bring back all the VAs from the original cartoon, except for Buttercup's, but many of them had lots of experience dubbing anime so they sounded very natural. I have to give props to Blossom's LA Spanish VA, Cristina Hernández, because when she voiced Blossom in PPGZ it seemed she was trying to differntiate her performance from the cartoon version, making Blossom sound more similar to her other famous anime roles, Sailor Chibi-Moon from Sailor Moon and Sakura Kinomoto from Sakura Cardcaptor
I wish they try againg to do some sort of PPG anime, the consept is amazing and the original show itself made coutles tributes to anime and japanese media in general in the long run. If they get someone who worked at a Precure season I'm sure they would have a great chance to revitalize the series, specially because the western prodctions themselvs had getting a prety hard time on trying to made good content with this IP in the last few years.
I won’t mind if they reboot PPGZ since I think with the right writers and direction we could get a really amazing anime version of PPG. 😅 Also, I totally want them in Multiversus. 😊
So, my thoughts about this show is simple... I watched the first episode with my sister YEARS ago, thought it was weird, and never gave it a second glance. However, watching your video, it doesn't FEEL like I missed much, but at the same time as well? It's definitely a curiosity that I think would be interesting to take a look at one of these days. In terms of the video, this discussion was REALLY well-done. Good critique imo. It was definitely a fun time for me to watch.
Either was the limitations of TV Airings in Japan or Toei being cheap as hell it wouldn't be the first time they did this (Saint Seiya Soul of Gold, Dragon Ball Kai, some episodes of One Piece, and many examples)
Hearing the fact the show never air in the US feels so surreal, they aired it all the time in CN Latin America around 2009-2011 I remember watching it a lot, but nowadays I kinda cringe a bit when remembering that
I remember looking at some episodes somewhere in 2012. Eventually I managed to Finish my rewatch from November to December 2023. It was a Really nostalgic Trip, Im actually Making some Fanfiction like a sequel (Kinda)
I do think it was a little boring but to be fair running off of 22 mins being a comedy is a bit challenging especially for a magical girl Anime that’s an adaptation, I will say it was an appreciation of the original show as they did keep the original villains close to how they would act in the original which I did like Princess is still rich and spoiled, The gang green gang is are still thugs and so on, so while it was boring I do like the love letter vibe it had towards the original as it wasn’t made out of malice to the original but appreciation more so than the 2016 reboot did, the Anime was at least attempting to be faithful to the original than the reboot.
I actually believe these versions of princess and sedusa were superior to the original. The rowdyruffs are an alternative take (you are meant to hate them) which I accept. Though Mojo Jojo is definitely inferior to his original self though. The 3 girls are totally different now, with bubbles and blossom just not working as well as the original, however I would argue buttercup's did as it fit into her original tough girl persona and deepened her character, because of this I ended up liking buttercup way more than blossom or bubbles. I will say I realized something interesting about this show, which is most characters are made better on-paper but the issue is execution in the general story, the story structure itself is flawed. They had the foundations for a great story set up, they just needed to build up from there.
this show was my first anime and i really HATED it as a kid. now i just think it’s A Show of all time, and it’s nice to see someone talk about it for once in this way. massive kudos to you for making this video 👍
i love this show ❤ but it was indeed confusing in the dubs that had the english one as base having the girls names being the same when both civilians and heroines and still no one knowing their secret identities 😅
That's totally fine! My reviews are essentially just ways for me to critique my unhinged interests. I'm just glad that you're able to enjoy the show :D
Even as a kid and a fan of the original this show just didn't click with me and I ended up hating it because it completely replaced the og cartoon in here in Mexico
I used to watch WITCH and the og powerpuff girls when I was like 12 or so. Didn't talk much about it with my friends because boys apparently shouldn't watch things like that. Somehow I'm still alive and well, and I don't think the devil took me over, unless my wife changed her name.
I remember the fandom when I was younger absolutely hated Z, but I liked it, though in a different way than the original. If you look at it as a replacement for the original show then yeah, it's not perfect. But if you look at it as a magical girl show that's Powerpuff Girls themed? It understands the assignment. I also headcanon both Professors are separate people, but related, and this takes place either alongside or soon after the original. with Ken being the same age as the original PPG.
Honestly, Sedusa in this version squicks me out because of the fact that this young girl transformer into an older woman and she tries to seduce him as said older form, like...they really couldn't have an older woman try to do the same to say, someone like Professor Utonium? And why have an innocent girl be involved in all this? Maybe they could have had her be like a symbiote that escapes out of her to decrease the gross factor?
I just really wanna comment your exquisite music choices for this video. Hearing the Grandia 2 battle theme got me excited for no good reason lol Great video otherwise. I didn't even know they were magical girls in Z, I just assumed it was a 1:1 PPG but in anime form. Kinda glad I never bothered watching it, this show sounds really dull.
Thats the problem you watched the English dub when you should have watched the Japanese version English sub. With the Dub, diologe changes script changes and intentional mistranslations ultimately dose interfear from the original vision or intention especially when watching the the ocean dub have you seen the ocean dub of dragon ball Z? Flat out terrible. No wonder ppgz was a missfire if you had them doing the English dub
After watching the modern reboot this was way more fun. When you're in that target audience this show is show much fun. When you are older it's a lot harder to enjoy but mid. However is you watch Powerpuff 2016 and this side by side you see a lot of similarities. I sometimes wonder if the reboot tried to replicate PPGZ and took away all the fighting and anime charm. Then it kept the Rowdyruff boy level of comedy and girls young age while still being in middle school. The reboot being so disappointing is why I hunted down all the PPGZ episodes. Gotta admit despite it's flaws I still like it.
I made sure to watch this show in it's original japanese when it first came out in 2006 since I was a fan of the original cartoon. I was very disapointed. I asumed that it was either going to feature funny comedy, cool action, or both... but it turned out to have none of that. Back then I wasn't aware of the whole "moe" genre of anime, so I didn't realize that there were shows out there that essentially went "as long as the characters are cute, none of the rest really matters". But that's what this show feels like an example of. It's just really lame all around.
I honestly never prefer the English dub version cause the music is 10x worst than the original JP version, and the name changing do not make much sense. I am not sure if this is an actual review of yours, since you are just covering the English dub version, but I guess western always choose the western way as I see it.
The only thing that came from Powerpuff Girls Z is the Hentai, but as for the original Powerpuff Girls, it just makes me feel guilty as opposed to seeing the Z anime adaptation adult-material that has an honest excuse, like if your character is a little girl whose a vampire princess or is based on a legal-aged girl yet designed as a little girl like in Powerpuff Girls Z then it's acceptable... please correct me if I'm wrong on one of those points!
Powerpuff girls Z is poor man’s Sailor Moon and Magical Doremi. This anime flanderizes the girls the same way the 2016 show does. 2:48 Powerpuff girls was never popular in Japan,in fact Japan hated the brand and anime was made just to win over Japanese audience but that failed cause PPGZ had lower viewership in Japan and struggled to sell merchandise over there. PPGZ was the most popular in Latin countries.
I was right this whole videos a case of fuk the show being talked about as its own thing an instead exclusively discredit its existence by every change we do this all the time even Teen Titans Go is being seen as its own thing ya could have easily title this differently
The PowerPuff girls z the true way to decsribe it is ok It has flaws and really good moments over all compare to the orignal it severs as the best reboot It had good ideas but excuted flawy is the best way to descrbie it's problem I love The Powerpuff girls z it's a good show Also you might of heard of ppgd a fan comic made by bleedman crazy thing is it was the first time the girls were in anime form and the creator Craig Mccarken knew bleedman and gave him permission to use one of design from the whoop ass girls pilot which would be called bell the point is it came before ppgz and the designs were different The powerpuff girls d blossom is very simiral to her orignal counterpart in fact it takes place from the orignal show The reason Powerpuff girls z isn't liked is because its just not from the orignal seires from ppgd it was fomrat of the orignal show but an in anime style in ppgz if blossom had the same trope she would be that student council leader and to be honest that kinda of would be borning to be honest since ppgd was based on the orignal in fact it felt good it just ppgz didn't follow the orignal format of the girls that really it. Blossom was changed in this version because when redesignging the girls sailor moon designer for the shown Miho Shimogasa who design sailor moon and other shows wanted to remake blossom and based her on one of the popular magical girl charather hence why she was giving that trope. The real reason the changes were made is simple it was into development they wanted to pitch something different The Powerpuff girls z is the best reboot that the show was created for
Unfortunately, the whole licensing situation with this show is a total mess (There’s a reason the English dub is so obscure), but the show itself can be found pretty easily on Archive.
I love the new Anime re-design of the Powerpuff Girls no offense but i always hated the old original design it was ugly again no offense of course😊 Other than that a great video keep up the great work👍 And greetings from the Netherlands🇳🇱

@@CoolMagmar wow that is the most small brain fake fan thinking right there assuming all anime must be dark XD
but you know what isn't mediocre? the opening song.
it's been been stuck in my head for years now. it's so good.
The ppg did not have basic personalities
41:22 Huh, sounds eerily similar to an adventure a certain pink puffball went on… nah, I’m probably just imagining things.
wwwwwwww
it was an easy sell for me as a kid, it was Powerpuff Girls, i liked anime and Pretty Cure, i was 9, but somewhere along the way something just clicked and it just turned me bitter. and most of that comes from what they did with Blossom; i did not like this Usag Tsukino-colored paint they coated her in, and i guess you can make the argument that "oh that's not blossom that's momoko" and sure but then why even adapt at all
The Rowdyruff boys pretending to be them episode sounds like the "maximum security prisoners pretend to be the PPG" episode. But the joke is that there's conveniently a cosplay wardrobe they can use and the town is really stupid. Here it's just they're sincerely in belief they're potentially real. It's weird.
Doesn't matter if the animation is mediocre or not as long as you make good story people will watch 3-5 times unable to get tired of it .
One thing I found disappointing was that Dynamo Z wasn't made for fighting and was just a time machine.
I always thought the US had a release of this show, i remember watching this on cartoon network in Mexico, there were even McDonald's toys for them
It's really strange Junior and snake are females in this version
Yeah, that's a minor thing I didn't really mention in the video. For Snake at least, I'm pretty sure it was a mistake on the part of Ocean Productions, Inc. since he's male in the sub. They might've seen his appearance as more female-presenting and had a female voice him, but I'm not really sure.
@@anoobdissectsI always thought he was a girl to be fair when i first watched the og show honestly wish he was
I personally don't think Powerpuff Girls Z is as bad as you make it out to be. I had fun watching the anime and love how different they made this compared to the original PPG.
Definently better then the garbage reboot but that's no contest when you think of it.
This series was one of my favorites when I was in middle school! I remember always wanting a peach plushie
I love how Princess gets a sister named Dutchess.
I won’t mind if they reboot PPGZ since I think with the right writers and direction we could get a really amazing anime version of PPG. 😅
Also, I totally want them in Multiversus.
It was definitely a fun time for me to watch.
the video is not viewing to show fairly the show is what the old series was parodying out of love
Either was the limitations of TV Airings in Japan
or Toei being cheap as hell
it wouldn't be the first time they did this
(Saint Seiya Soul of Gold, Dragon Ball Kai, some episodes of One Piece, and many examples)
The manga is pretty great and I wish there was more or at least those characters could’ve been episodes, plus the music is still pretty good
Hearing the fact the show never air in the US feels so surreal, they aired it all the time in CN Latin America around 2009-2011
I remember watching it a lot, but nowadays I kinda cringe a bit when remembering that
The concept art is awsome 😍😍😍😍😍. Their fashions are so different from one another n their all great ❤❤❤❤❤❤
I remember looking at some episodes somewhere in 2012.
Eventually I managed to Finish my rewatch from November to December 2023. It was a Really nostalgic Trip, Im actually Making some Fanfiction like a sequel (Kinda)
At least it's better than the 2016 reboot!
This totally should be on Toonami!!! It looks awesome!!!
To each their own
I do think it was a little boring but to be fair running off of 22 mins being a comedy is a bit challenging especially for a magical girl Anime that’s an adaptation, I will say it was an appreciation of the original show as they did keep the original villains close to how they would act in the original which I did like Princess is still rich and spoiled, The gang green gang is are still thugs and so on, so while it was boring I do like the love letter vibe it had towards the original as it wasn’t made out of malice to the original but appreciation more so than the 2016 reboot did, the Anime was at least attempting to be faithful to the original than the reboot.
They had the foundations for a great story set up, they just needed to build up from there.
full episode lengths are bad for magical girl shows what
I hate how they butchered my boy Mojo...it hurts me on a deep emotional level.
what do you mean this was actually made in Japan?!
I always thought it was a reboot made in the west to cash in on the popularity of anime at the time
Black dust... like monakumas?
this show was my first anime and i really HATED it as a kid.
now i just think it’s A Show of all time, and it’s nice to see someone talk about it for once in this way. massive kudos to you for making this video 👍
I still like PPGZ, it's one of my childhood even still like when I got older. At least it's better than the 2016 reboot.
i don't agree but i respect ur opinion
i love this show ❤ but it was indeed confusing in the dubs that had the english one as base having the girls names being the same when both civilians and heroines and still no one knowing their secret identities 😅
Check out something similar:
"Zettai Karen Children"
I respect your opinion, but that is my favorite anime (but the title didn’t aged well)
That's totally fine! My reviews are essentially just ways for me to critique my unhinged interests. I'm just glad that you're able to enjoy the show :D
I remember the show and ngl I liked it. It may not be the best it was nostalgic😭
the show may not be the best but the designs are amazing.
Still better than 2016.
Japan tings & anime tings 🤧
I named my iguana momoko after the show
I just really wanna comment your exquisite music choices for this video. Hearing the Grandia 2 battle theme got me excited for no good reason lol Great video otherwise. I didn't even know they were magical girls in Z, I just assumed it was a 1:1 PPG but in anime form. Kinda glad I never bothered watching it, this show sounds really dull.
I mainly watch for Poochy/Peach. Such a cute little fella.
True
It might just be nostalgia but this is one of my favorite shows ever and rewatch it often lol
This shit was good
honestly this whole thing just sold it as the kind of silly nonsense id love to actually watch lol putting that on the to do list
I like powerpuff girl z

Better than 2016 tbh
til this anime had an english dub. Used to watch the subs on youtube when i was in 5th
I was right this whole videos a case of fuk the show being talked about as its own thing an instead exclusively discredit its existence by every change
we do this all the time even Teen Titans Go is being seen as its own thing
ya could have easily title this differently
Ppgz has its flaws, but at least its way better than the 2016 reboot
Is Mojo doing a sterotypic Japanese voice?
He monke its ok
The PowerPuff girls z the true way to decsribe it is ok
It has flaws and really good moments over all compare to the orignal it severs as the best reboot
It had good ideas but excuted flawy is the best way to descrbie it's problem
I love The Powerpuff girls z it's a good show
Also you might of heard of ppgd a fan comic made by bleedman crazy thing is it was the first time the girls were in anime form and the creator Craig Mccarken knew bleedman and gave him permission to use one of design from the whoop ass girls pilot which would be called bell the point is it came before ppgz and the designs were different
The powerpuff girls d blossom is very simiral to her orignal counterpart in fact it takes place from the orignal show
The reason Powerpuff girls z isn't liked is because its just not from the orignal seires from ppgd it was fomrat of the orignal show but an in anime style in ppgz if blossom had the same trope she would be that student council leader and to be honest that kinda of would be borning to be honest since ppgd was based on the orignal in fact it felt good it just ppgz didn't follow the orignal format of the girls that really it.
Blossom was changed in this version because when redesignging the girls sailor moon designer for the shown Miho Shimogasa who design sailor moon and other shows wanted to remake blossom and based her on one of the popular magical girl charather hence why she was giving that trope.
The real reason the changes were made is simple it was into development they wanted to pitch something different
The Powerpuff girls z is the best reboot that the show was created for
I watched the first series
Subscribbled
still waiting for Powerpuff Girls Z on hbo max
Unfortunately, the whole licensing situation with this show is a total mess (There’s a reason the English dub is so obscure), but the show itself can be found pretty easily on Archive.
The dub was atrocious omg
I love the new Anime re-design of the Powerpuff Girls no offense but i always hated the old original design it was ugly again no offense of course😊
Other than that a great video keep up the great work👍
And greetings from the Netherlands🇳🇱
what's your beef with Sonictubers? there's nothing wrong with being autistic lol
man that Him design sucks
Okay but it has a good concept the way they run about it... Suck it sucked I'm sorry
Haven't watched the video yet but it certainly wasn't mediocre when I watched it at 11, lol. This show was good enough to get me deep into anime

Couldn’t Bubbles 🫧 remove z rays from people? Why doesn’t she just do that?
This show 😂😂🫤🫤😒
