This is a supplementary update comment I wrote right after I finished editing this video. Feel free to skip reading this if you don't care. Some people have noticed a big chunk of my back catalog of videos are missing. This was a deliberate choice on my end that I had been thinking about for a very long time. They aren't deleted or anything, they are just exclusive to channel members. Am I doing this because I'm greedy? Why not make these videos unlisted in a playlist for everybody to see? To answer that, I want them to still be visible to some extent, but not too accessible. I didn't make this decision because I wanna drain my viewers of their money. If this was all purely for the sake of profit, I wouldn't spend several hundreds on my videos, or even upwards of over a thousand dollars in the case of my Mr. Gimmick video, which I still consider to be one of my best work. The actual reason is because I don't feel comfortable having them fully public. I've been identifying as non-binary for a couple years now and most of my old videos were made at a time where I still forced myself to see myself as a man. I'm still the same person in many ways, and even now I'm still proud of everything I've made. It just doesn't make any sense for me to still have these videos visible. Objectively speaking, they aren’t up to part with my current output either, despite the fact that I’m still proud of everything I’ve made. RUclipsrs do this all the time. I know this will be disappointing to some, but just like how you are entitled to feel however you want to feel about my decision, I am also entitled to my own emotions. My goal has always been and will always be to push the conversation forward. I've uncovered unknown information that has been unknown in the western sphere for decades through my own preservation and perseverance interviewing people first-hand. My discoveries are still going to be public even if the video it originated from is not. With that being said, I would like to not ever do something like that again. I would like to continue making shoujo and magical girl videos for as long as possible. There might be the occasional off-video where I talk about something that doesn't squarely fall into that same mold, but I want to actually grow, and the most reliable way to grow is by putting yourself in a box. Some people can get away with doing whatever they want, but I don't think I'll ever be that person. As mentioned in the video, I've had bad depression my whole life, and that still holds true to this day. My confidence is not always the greatest. I often feel alone and unloved. Despite my videos taking a very long time to make, I never have anybody clamoring for me to return someday or expect more out of me. My motivation is consistently quite low because I'm more often than not the only one to motivate myself. A couple years ago I thought about starting dating and I was in a relationship for 2 years that ended up leaving me feeling somehow even more lonely and pathetic. I won't go into personal detail about the relationship here in public for the sake of privacy, but around October of last year I went on a 3 month long vacation to this person's place. We broke up probably around a week or two into me being there. The decision was mutual though. That same week there was news of a shooter only a few hours away from us. That was fun. While being there, I ended up mostly trying to work on stuff. I'd spend all day at the library scanning books and return after closing time to do even more research and stuff in a chair that was mauling my back. My body was the stiffest it had ever been. I was in constant pain. For a while I was also dealing with cat allergies that turned my eyes bloodshot red and all sorts of sickness, but we managed to find some good medication for it eventually. Skipping more of the personal details about the relationship I don’t wanna go into, the process of going back home ended up being one of the worst things I had to go through. My connecting flight somehow got messed up so I was forced to stay at the airport overnight. No food, in the cold. I tried sleeping, but my hunger and body freezing kept me from being able to get any proper sleep. Mind you, I am a very light sleeper, so any amount of light going into my eyes or general disturbances will cause me to jolt out of my sleep immediately. After being awake for over 50 hours I finally managed to get on another plane back home. I had to sit next to this couple while absolutely reeking. I felt bad for them. Thankfully they weren’t complete dicks to me, unlike everybody else at the airport. While I was waiting on flight updates, I tried finding a place to sit down that wouldn’t blast light in my eyes for the 9+ hours I was about to wait for. There was this family next to me who were looking at me as I tried to find a good spot. I guess the dad assumed that I was going to take his seat, the only indicator of which could’ve been was a Mountain Dew bottle on the seat, that realistically anyone could’ve left there. He was going off at me for several minutes, trying to make some point about how you should kindly ask people before taking their place. I was literally only focused on checking for light. His seat would’ve been a bad place for me to sit. Anyway, after the ordeal of dealing with all of that and finally coming back home, anxiously awaiting my luggage as my body was literally falling apart, I had to take a taxi back home. It would’ve taken no less than 2 hours. Looking for a taxi was an ordeal in and of itself though. My anxiety was through the roof and I just wanted to get back home. The first and only taxi I ended up seeing ended up scamming me out of $200 when I only had $150 in my account. He ended up taking the money after stopping about halfway because he wanted to give me a “deal.” He called up his other friend who said he would drive me home for $50 flat. This was a trip that should’ve cost no less than $15 in total. Because my body was on the verge of physically collapsing and I desperately had to hold my vomit, I ended up taking it with my mom giving me $50 when I came back home to pay the guy. My mom and I were on call as I was driven back home, and as I explained my circumstances, she said “Honey, you got tricked…” The only thing I could say was: “Yes, I know.” But finally I’m back home in one piece and -$200 less in my account. I told myself I would relax for a bit, but I ended up unpacking all of my stuff and putting everything into place. Some of the boxes were a bit crushed, but I was mostly carrying home research material in the form of books, so those were fine. A copy of Pokemon Crystal in the box I gave money to my ex to buy for me ended up getting a tear in the middle of the box along with some crushing damages. The box wasn’t in the best of conditions to begin with, but it was also like $200 and yet another blow to me while I was already down, quite literally. Now that I was home and settled in, what was the first thing I did? Go right back to editing. The intro you see in this video was done in about a week. All that masking took a great toll on my arm and wrist, but I like how it came out, even if it was very painful. I think I managed to recover since then. Getting away from my ex gave me a spark of motivation to keep going. This video was actually a side project I had thought about doing for years, went to research it near the end of last year, and finally put together over about 4 months. A quick sidenote, the news of Akira Toriyama passing away was very shocking to me because at that point I had just written and recorded the Dragon Ball segment while he was alive, so I went back and threw in a line wishing him to rest in peace. Anyway I had another project I went to work on right after my Fruits Basket video that I’ve been putting on hold since my vacation because writing it was really starting to drain me. I do intend on finishing it though. I made it about halfway through the script, and while it’s gonna be a lot of hard work to finish it, I think it’ll be valuable to fans of that series. I say this to myself every time I finish a video and then the next one only gets bigger than the last, but I do want to experiment some more with shorter videos and get better at doing analysis. Maybe even do some more general topic stuff about shoujo and magical girls. Whatever I make, I hope you end up enjoying it. Thanks for hearing me out. I’d like to open up emotionally about things some more in the future.
I remember trying to explain Precure to a Sailor Moon 'Fans' several months ago. (Or years, it has been pretty long) Only for them to Chuck it up to "Oh, so basically, Precure is Sailor Moon Knock Off" and "Never Heard of it, it must not be that good" I never wish too punch someone so much in the face
Yeah as a Sailor Moon fan it's so disheartening to see them put down any other Magical Girl franchise just because it's not popular and chuck it down to a "copy" What's funny to me is that Pretty Cure is made by the same company so how could they copy and show they own? I've watched a lot of Pretty Cure and Sailor Moon I can definitely say there way different other then being Magical Girls Also for some reason they claim SM is the first Magical Girl show? Which it isn't... All there points aren't valid at all
Oh, ouch! Even though I never heard of Pretty Cure without having looked deeply into Glitter Force, it's still seriously a big thing in Japan. I can't believe I went so long not knowing it existed. But Pretty Cure is great! Omg
@@slaypa Are you sure?😭 I perfer Pretty Cure but I don't think it's popular then SM right? SM even is VERY popular in the west and it's easy to find merch and stuff here
Finding out Nagisa, Cure Black, was in Kamen Rider Black as a child who was rescued by the hero crossed those two franchises over in my mind and hooked me into being a fan.
While Futari wa Precure was a success, It's actually Yes Precure 5 that popularized Precure to the point that it became household name in Japan on the same level as Kamen Rider or Super Sentai. There is a reason why only Yes 5 that got 2 sequels season(GoGo and Otona 23) and Nozomi/Cure Dream is the undisputable most popular Cure of All Time(You can actually tell from watching every All Stars crossover, She always got a special treatment on the same level as Black and White) It could be said that while Futari wa made the series, Yes 5 made the franchise
Speaking of Kamen Rider and Super Sentai.... Fun Fact: there are cd dramas where Super Sentai crossover with Precure. I believe it starts with Dekarenger with Futari wa but I think they stopped with Go-onger with Yes 5 GoGo. Another fun fact: Go-onger and Yes 5 GoGo crossover a lot! First with the cd drama I just mentioned, then this one ad they did along with Kamen Rider Kiva and Banshin from Battle Spirit Toppa no Banshin (speaking of Kiva there was one ad where Kiva and Cure Dream are together, possibly for a promo.) lastly Cure Dream recreated Go-on Yellow's roll call. There's also that one kid magazine with Kamen Rider Wizard and Cure Heart are.... married? (Well that's some potential crackship.) And Patren-1 and Cure Ange (from HUGGTO) had a child and it's......Cure Yell?!?? (Now this is confusing....) The Christmas cake every year. Precure being called "the little sister" to Kamen Rider. Lots of Doujinshi of Precure crossover with Kamen Rider. And don't forget that one promo music video with Kiramager along with Lupinrenger, Patrenger and Ryosoulger dancing with Star Twinkle along with HUGGTO and Healing Good. In all seriousness,Toei, where is our Toei Trinity crossover!!! Like, actually, A REAL CROSSOVER!!!!
Otona 23 is evidence of Yes5's propularity but GoGo and MaxHeart are the evidence of why PreCure abhors sequel series. SplashStar not getting a sequel is probably something dumb about Michiru and Kaoru not being allowed to be Bright/Windy in name (except that Otona is a Splashstar Sequel so that just weakens the idea that it proves Yes5 supremacy even if Nozumi is also my favourite Tsukino Usagi). Just watching the subdued snark manifested in the GoGo final is evidence of a production revolt against the concept of ever making another full PreCure sequel series.
my autism got so happy seeing an hour length video about precure history thank you for this. one of my all time favorite magical girl series next to doremi, sailor moon and mermaid melody
Say what you want about Netflix’s Glitter Force, it changed my life. I was born into the era of streaming, so as a kid I got my shows from scrolling through Netflix and picking any show that was pretty and shiny. I was big into Winx, but unable to watch all of it, and of course I got into Pokémon and YuGiOh, but I also found a lot of classic Shojou. Glitter Force may be an objectively inferior version to its non-dubbed original, but it had me hooked. The transformations. The colors. The fun little story book scenes, I was big into fairy tales as a kid, so I loved them. The super cute little creatures. When I got older and season two came out, I became acutely aware of the lore and story of the series, as well as the stronger emotional moments. Smile PreCure was one of my first steps into Shojou. Without me even knowing it, it established a ton of the basis for how I would interact with media in the future. DokiDoki! PreCure is my favorite of the two series Netflix adapted, its story gripped me pretty much right away and I adore its characters and lore. It just struck me as so creative. I wouldn’t have thought of so many of those plot points and worldbuilding details, and I think stories like this have really impacted me as an artist and writer. Netflix didn’t have Sailor Moon, so while I’ve always been interested in it, I haven’t been able to watch the anime. I own all of the manga, and I adore it for so many reasons, namely how thoughtful the story gets towards the end and the sparkle sparkle pretty designs. As a kid I watched up to like episode three of Madoka before deciding it wasn’t for kids and dropping it, but I’ve gone back and watched it. You don’t need me to tell you it’s good, though not purely a Magical Girl Shoujou. The other Shojou gem of my childhood was a little anime Netflix hosted called Yuki Yuna is a Hero, or Yuuki Yuuna wa Yuusha de Aru. It’s my favorite anime and one of the best shows I’ve ever watched. While it can be heavy on the fan service compared to all the other titles I’ve mentioned, it was life-changing for me. It is by no means a Madoka knockoff. All of this is to say, a crappy Netflix dub of a PreCure anime permanently changed my life. My tastes are pretty diverse in terms of the media I consume, but I’ve always had an appreciation for Shojou and an ability to see it as more than just “Oh, so it’s like Sailor Moon”. I plan to check out some other PreCure shows at some point, as they’ve always made themselves worth the watch. Watch girly media, it’s good for you.
Ah yes, the franchise that introduced me to one of my favorite fictional characters of all time, Cure Happy. Thanks to her awesome Dragon Ball Z-like moveset, her endearing arc, relatable character, and hilarious moments, Miyuki Hoshizora became an easy favorite of mine. I’ve always enjoyed the Pretty Cure franchise for increasing the badassery of magical girls by ten fold with intensive fistfights and over-the-top finishers but still retaining the heart of its compelling characters and designs. I applaud you for the immense amount of history you provided in the video. Great job!
IT'S BEEN SO LONG SINCE I GOT RECOMMENDED A PRECURE VIDEO OVER AN HOUR LONG 😭 (I'm convinced I've watched all of the others) but I have to say, this is really well put together! I'm a huge nerd when it comes to precure history, and there were lots of details here that I never caught before. I particularly enjoyed the segment about Inagami, I had no idea he contributed so much to Futari wa outside just being the character designer! Futari Wa is easily one of my favorite precure seasons, because not only does it deviate from other magical girl series with stuff like its color scheme, being centered around a duo, and heavy physical fighting, It's also just an all around nostalgic experience. The music specifically reminds me a lot of cardcaptor sakura (which was probably my favorite show growing up) so that definitely contributed a lot to why I enjoy it so much. I used to exclusively watch precure and pokemon in my early days of being an anime fan, but in these past few years when I've started diversifying what I watch, and now even enjoy lots of action shounen, I can honestly see lots of similarities between precure and those shows. Not to say that they were directly inspired by it, but it just goes to show how well futari wa's elements work for any type of story and don't have to be bound by its target audience of young girls to be appealing. I've seen every precure season, and honestly I found myself to enjoy every single one of them. Each has their strong and weak points, but at the end of the day I don't think I'll ever be able to hate an installment of a franchise so close to my heart. I've learned to see the positives in each season and admire them for what they are instead of letting the fandom's opinions take over my tastes. I definitely agree with the last part of the video. I think it's important that everyone should feel included in their favorite media regardless of things they can't control like gender. Whether that's better written shonen females, or more inclusion of male main characters in shoujo, everyone deserves to be included. It's still kinda sad how so many people hate cure wing for being a boy after the incident with the cure wing costume. Anyways, this was probably the best hour and 41 minutes of these past few weeks for me ✌
precure definitely takes from tokusatsu and shounen by the virtue of it being largely helmed creatively by people who love tokusatsu and shonen. then again men have always been heavily involved in magical girl anime and you can feel that in comparison to some magical girl manga written by women. but the best ones are the ones where the staff respect and hear each other out as creatives such as with akitaro daichi and precure
@@HaydenTheHistorian yes I completely agree! Precure definitely feels more like a shonen than a magical girl anime lots of times, which is part of the reason why I love it so much. Getting along is very important as that’s what allows everyone to pitch in their ideas and create the best possible story with the combination of different perspectives. Even though it was created by men, precure really feels like a collaboration between men and women to create something kids can enjoy regardless of their gender.
I get your last point, but shows shouldn't be obligated to appeal to every person across the board. Remember, a series for everyone is a series for No One.
So proud of you for finishing this video. Precure absolutely deserves such a monumental video like this one, and I hope more people in the anitube scene are inspired to look into the history and production of Precure and Mahou Shoujo in general ❤️
One thing I think goes a bit underappreciated about Nagisa, is that she often shows herself to be a far better person than she can appear at a glance and has a surprising amount of hidden depths to her as a character (although calling her a super deep character would be an exaggeration). Chiefly being that she is actually for the most part pretty considerate towards the well being and feelings of others and generally puts there well being and needs before her own and is actually a pretty thoughtful and introspective person. She's also actually pretty intelligent, just not in an academic sense.
YESSSS PRECURE!!!!! In all honesty, I’m so happy to see a video this long about a magical girl anime that I hold in very high regard. Hearing the history about Precure and about some of its predecessors is so fascinating to hear about. Precure deserves a video like this and I’m so glad it has it now.
It's too bad this didn't have a proper dub, Netflix did a full-on 4kids on the franchise and renamed it glitter force, and apparently, there was a UK dub that aired on POP girl
Fun fact! 4kids themselves actually had the rights to precure for quite awhile! But they chose to dub Tokyo mew mew instead believing it’d have more brand longevity. The IRONY😭
Magical Girl franchises hold a very special place in my heart, of course Sailor Moon is beloved by all and of course a franchise like Cardcaptor Sakurai (and my god I love Cardcaptor Sakurai) and even the old classics like Creamy Mami and Minky Momo, they just have style and fun Love that Precure is so beloved by its fans
I watched Najda when it was airing in Italy, loved the italian opening and the historical drama wasn't off putting to me even as a kid (i really liked it actually). Add the misteries of Najda's mom and the love interest and I was hooked!
Hah, I caught that subtle dig in the description at a certain T-titled podcast who seems… ill-informed on Mahou Shojo and other genres. That’s hilarious. Looking forward to this one Hayden. You’ve always been such a kindhearted and supportive friend to me and my videos and work, I really admire yours, and I see what you mean about not being in this for the money and doing your videos for the love of media (as a Sunsoft fan I loved your Gimmick video for that reason). Keep making great content and fighting the good fight
@@HaydenTheHistorianyou defintely are making worthwhile stuff! And yeah I see what you mean that I’d like it to be my job too, but I also am not driven by greed. If I was, I wouldn’t have spent money to buy a rare magical girl dvd that came as a pre order bonus for a DS game, all just to help preserve it and keep it from being forgotten by time and the internet.
Do you have a link to where I can see that one please? I’ve seen dozens upon dozens of official yuri Precure art by the Kamikitas (what legends) but I never saw them draw gay dudes. That’s rad, would love to see it
it's always nice to see precure stuff show up in my recommendations. happy to see a video celebrating this wonderful franchise that i loved so much i made a short lived abridged series of it lol
@@tiffany-chan1235 yeah, though now adays i'd have done better with the humor, some jokes didn't age well imo. highly recommend Heartcatch Abridged though, it's humor ages far better and at least they got past ep1 lol
HOLY SMOKES, AN HOUR AND HALF VIDEO, on one of my favorite franchises that I've watched for the last two years!? I'm so watching this in the morning. But I wanna say great job so far on the first minute, you really seem like a big fan of this anime franchise! :DD
This was in my RUclips recommended and I clicked on it because I like magical girl anime but instead I realized I watched this when I was a kid and fully forgot
Thank you so much. I devour Precure content like my life depends upon it and the original series/girls often feel kind of forgotten about or overshadowed by the newer series’ ( not that those aren’t wonderful in their own right! ) This was so well done and fun to watch!
God I love magical girls. Seriously though, the amount of time and effort that you put into this video is tremendous. I’ve been a precure fan since Smile and I’ve always admired how this franchise evolves and always outdoes itself. I just finished watching Wonderful and yeah they’ve done it again 😭. Fantastic video! Also do you have a favorite era for precure? For me, it’s between heart catch, smile and princess
I enjoyed this video as a Pretty Cure fan and made me appreciate and love the franchise even more! Spectacular job to you and everyone who contributed!!
man this is so yet a great story to ever know, it really gives me a happy feeling, how awesome the world biggest franchise really shown people how it helps them overcome their problems and take care of it all it really helps me overcome my problems and i'm happy this series is the one for me what a true gem of anime culture i ever known and love truly ^^
Finally, The Lore we ACTUALLY deserve to learn. In serious, having finished S1 Futari wa Precure but prepping up Max Heart, it's nice having some clarification on "26 episode show gets 70 more AND movies than it knows what to do with story wise", tho it honestly feels more in line with what little I know of Tokusatsu production lines of scheduled on 13 ep arc developments but constantly adapting over the course of the show. I'm also impressed not just on the depth of production trivia on previous work like Air Master and Nadja, but convincingly using not just parallel thematic comparisons but fuller episode synopsis to compare to a Boy-Girl falling out vs Futari Wa's Iconic Duo that has yet to reach the same "totally-just" BFFs...possibly even more highlighting that writing in "absence" of a male character that both Honoka and Nagisa feel much more rounded and equal, perhaps from experience but perhaps also from not having a gender-centric plot beat so heavily characterize the two leads Among the many pieces of knowledge that historically build and weave what kind of force Precure would become, I also deeply appreciate the candid talk about *ahem* Magical Girl Sexualization (in the Otaku paradigm), which has kinda re-escalated in a lot of recent discourses. While I am plenty aware of the stances both of Sailor Moon has been taken as well as other contemporary shows, the deliberate effort put by Futari wa to explicitly NOT-cater to Otaku -as much as of course maintaining Child/Family friendly tone- DOES let the show re-focus on it's themes, if confidently demands "just" High Wuxia choreography without viscerality (minus the first generals being vaporized) and the bond of the two girls carries a show SANS fanservice. (although considering how Wanderful Precure has been received maybe it's pushed too far in the other direction by some voices). Will say with a limited experience in Sentai, it is interesting placing Futari Wa's card gimmick in the middle of a major Arcade-Card game craze considering Kamen Rider Ryuki being card themed and then later Blade in 2004, the same year as Futari Wa. Final word from a passerby, even discounting the "bad hetero romance" as standard Shoujo fare, Wakamiya Henri alone has sent Males in Precure progress back at least 20 years and even with Rosemary and Tsubasa, we're STILL in Misandry debt for his crimes.
@@HaydenTheHistorian It's one of those things that becomes foundational for the Otaku argument that Naoko is seen "giving her blessing" to Magical Girl Sexualization, but it feels dubious out-of-context, and even if Naoko herself is pretty pro Sexy Sailor Scouts, it feels dishonest to treat a genre largely made as Children media (specifically Young Girls) then never seem to acknowledge the line in the sand for Otaku, at least since PreCure became the Anti-Thesis. Even considering most of the type of MG stuff I consume, it needs to be said that Otaku/Adult Magical Girl shows are "secondary/subversive" to the genre conventions, not the standard wholesale.
Making another comment because I have more thoughts haha. But the part where you put an explanation as to why Shiny Luminous isn’t a Cure really interested me. I used to be bothered by how she didn’t match, but it all makes sense now. She and Milky Rose aren’t Cures because they aren’t your average girls. I wish Precure did more of this idea. When you think about it, Cures like Cure Ace and Cure Felice would probably fall into that category. It’s a shame they don’t do that anymore. Now Shiny Luminous and Milky Rose are kind of on their own
I always wish that PreCure would get more attention in the west along with all of the other renowned magical girl shows. I’m sure there are lots of people who grew up with the dub (yes, THAT dub) the way others did with Cardcaptor Sakura, Sailor Moon, or Doremi, and are making it more well-known in the anime space.
precure is actually super popular in the west and its not just glitter force either. there are tons of youtube and twitter accounts entirely dedicated to precure. its kind of a hugbox community from what i have seen so finding them and getting in should be pretty easy too. even if a lot of these kids discovered precure through glitter force its basically the same thing people from my generation experienced with watching 4kids on tv and getting into anime afterwards
This has been the best precure video up to date and would love to see other talking more about precure, its a series that I feel like it gets overlooked in the anime community
Wonderful video, it taught me a lot of stuff about the Precure franchise and the whole genre of magical girls I didn't have a clue about. I heard of Ashita no Nadja before, but I definitely need to watch it soon. I din't know Air Master at all, though, and as soon as I saw it I just thought "hey, those are Honoka's moves", definitely gotta watch it soon as well. I love this content on RUclips, because I can find a lot of "new" things to learn about, so thanks for the excellent work, it's been a pleasure to watch!
That was a beautiful video on pretty cure origins and your story. Well done, it's not always easy. But it takes great effort and heart to share this. You are not alone.
Wanted to comment again now that I’ve finished the video. Dear god this was good. I’ve come away with a greater appreciation for my favourite anime, your editing is WONDERFUL, I loved the use of physical props. I’ve now got a new channel I’m subbed to AND a new anime recommendation in nadja, thank you!!
God what a fantastic video. Every time new Pretty Cure content comes out I descend on it like a wild animal, and this was fantastic! I also got a huge laugh out of the start of Part 3, really made me feel seen HAHA. Also shout out to Yes Precure 5, my first season of Precure that still has a special place in my heart
This was a great video on the history and creation of Precure and also about anime in general. It was very pleasant to watch. I find it very interesting to learn more about this franchise because I just recently got into it. I started Futari wa last fall and even if I wasn't into it as much as I thought I would, it was still very enjoyable for me and I grew more attached to it with max heart and I'm currently having a very good time with Splash stars. I can't wait to see what the other instalment of the franchise have to offer.
the crazy thing about kira kira is, that season start to make sense a lot more when you replace kira kira by happiness... it technically even work on the title, happiness a la mode. (which means happiness is trending if you didnt know french.)
Oooooh I’m so excited that this popped up in my feed!! An hour and forty minute long video essay about Precure, yes please!! I haven’t watched yet but I’m so jazzed to.
I know I don't speak for everyone, but as a man, not only do I not feel the need for Precure to be directed towards me or other men, but I also don't *want* Precure to be directed towards us. Don't get me wrong, I have no problem with men enjoying "girly" shows and media-I myself am a fan of several such franchises, and have been trying to get into watching Precure for a good while-but I don't believe that any such media would benefit from catering to the desires of a male audience, especially if doing so runs the risk of diminishing what made them so special in the first place. It's the mark of excellent storytelling to be able to appeal to people outside your target audience *despite* not writing your story with them in mind, and as an aspiring author it's something that I wish to achieve as well. I don't *want* male Pretty Cures. I don't *want* the creators to feel obligated to have their heroines share the spotlight with some guy. I don't *want* to be pandered to. What I *want* is for shows like Precure to stay true to their foundations, to continue to focus on their original target demographic and let the quality of the writing, not shoehorned inclusivity, be what draws in viewers from outside that demographic. I get that plenty of people disagree with the sentiments I've expressed here, especially in this day and age, and I believe they have every right to do so. However, I also believe that instead of demanding that pre-existing franchises be changed to accommodate as many groups of people as possible, the people who hold to these sorts of ideals should create their own *new* franchises. Their own *new* stories and shows. If you want media to adhere to the wishes of as many people as possible, then there's nothing wrong with creating it! You don't need older franchises to be refashioned to target everyone when you can produce your own media that does just that. All you need is a little creativity and a whole lot of passion, and the viewers will come pouring in. I could go on, but two paragraphs is a bit much as it is. To those of you who read this comment of mine, I ask that you at least take my words into consideration before passing judgement. You may find that we have a great deal of common ground. Until next time, Peace and God bless!
Excellent video! It taught me a lot of things about what I think is a very important and interesting franchise that I didn’t know beforehand! Thank you for making this and I look forward to whatever you put out in the future!
Pretty cure is way too big to be talked about so little outside of Japan, man. I may not keep up with it anymore, but the franchise is still precious to me.
Me: (watches video essay on precure) Also me: ( hears kindaichi case files mentioned and gets more excited because it one of my favorite detective anime/manga)
I can relate to being teased about loving magical girls, Sanrio, and other cutesy things just because I'm a boy. There have unfortunately been numerous occasions where many people would tease me because I genuinely loved those kinds of things because I simply wasn't interested in many other things outside of that. In retrospect, this is probably the reason as to why I was shy about sharing my interests in cute things for such a long time...
Great Video. Thanks for the research. I didn't know much of the information since I only got into Precure with the newest season. I have subsequently watched Tropical Rouge, Futari Wa, Max Heart and am now making my way through Splash Star (which is probably my favorite until now). I also agree with you on your opinion on Max Heart as I also like it slightly more than Futari Wa (mostly because the second half of Futari Wa is not that great and the villains in Max Heart have more personality). Also thanks for bringing up Nadja (as I didn't know that anime existed and it really looks interesting; don't know when I will get around to watching it since my backlog is so large)
select episodes in futari wa like 8 and 42 clear pretty much the rest of the franchise but yeah overall max heart felt more cozy and fun. nadja is amazing, it really blew me away when i watched it, far surpassed any expectations i had for it
I got jump scared by my own voice 😭 I'm so happy this video is out now! I'm admittedly not well verse in the world of Precure but this video was still easy for me to follow. Especially when your comparing the animation techniques to other shows. To speak a bit on the 2000's compared to now, I'm envious of how much better kids have it now compared to then. I think a lot of people growing up around that time were put into boxes and were pushed to not like certain games and shows because it was perceived as zesty or fruity. I feel for the lost souls who could never be themselves at the time
thank you so much lad! i feel like to some extent the whole getting put in a box thing will always be around. for example now in some circles you are kinda expected to have certain views in order to fit in. like you cant simply be a fan of both drake and kendrick right now. you have to pick one side and dunk on the other. just like how back then you had to pick between liking pokemon and digimon and the digimon kids were seen as the odd ones out. its unfortunate but things have been getting more and more promising for a long time now and i hope kids these days are able to have a much more free childhood
A friend of mine got into Futari Wa nearly 2 years ago and we were both immediately smitten and since then Nagisa and Honoka have lived rent-free in my head, Futari Wa is one of my favorite animes, I watched every other season, I also got into Doremi and Nadja and other magical girls, and I thought this was a really awesome and informative video. Wonderful job. I personally am obsessed by the writers of Precure, rather than producers, showrunners or animators, so I was hoping to hear a little more about the lead writer, Ryo Kawasaki, who I can find very little about, but otherwise, amazing stuff.
precure undoubtably has exceptional writers working on it but the reason i put so much emphasis on nishio is because of his direction for the writing. dont think he actually wrote any episodes himself but its his philosophy that had influence on the rest of the writing staff to be as thoughtful as possible. of course they all deserve credit for their amazing contributions though
@@HaydenTheHistorian No, he did not, but I find the trends in lead and episode writers pretty interesting, regardless of the showrunner's input. Yoshimi Narita, lead writer for Wonderful, was also working as an episode writer on Futari Wa (and all the prior seasons starting with Ojamajo Doremi Sharp).
no he definitely did. washio had ideas about wanting to break away from stereotypical gender norms seen in a lot of television but nishio was the one who took a step further to ensure that they were getting all the right messages across with pinpoint accuracy. he approached precure with a similar sensitivity that is more standard and enforced nowadays and precure since then still follows in the footsteps of his ideals for this sort of programming
@@HaydenTheHistorian I'm aware, I meant to say only that he doesn't have any specific writer credits for any of the episodes (I've spent way too long looking over those). I do thank you for the clarification though, because I knew from Happiness Charge (thanks to an interview with Yoshimi Narita) that the showrunner CAN have a lot of say in the writing process, but I have no easy way of knowing that for any given season. And for Futari Wa, as you have so eloquently shown in this video, that most certainly was a good thing.
Finally! People be talking about Precure! :D I became a fan in 2022 after watching Go! Pretty Cure and it ended up becoming my favorite season hands down. Heck. I even used this season as the crux of my 40page college thesis about magical girls. xD
from what i recall, Toei had to make a decision on whether to continue making precure anime or drop the franchise altogether. Fresh could have been the last precure season, but thankfully it did well, and the precure franchise is still alive and well.
As a sentai/rider fan I'm so happy to see love for precure!! While i'm not a major fan of precure seeing it getting love in an essay is always welcomed
18:00 - You’re not far off dude. At one point, PGSM had a dubious canon stage show about all five Guardian Senshi fighting all four Shitennou that was performed right after Mamoru had to leave to Europe for studies. So of course when Tuxedo Mask shows up to help as if he never actually left, the villains make a point to lampshade that he left for and should be settled in Europe at that point in time. More to the point though, the cast did a behind the scenes thing about the stage show and had an anecdote where they didn’t have any downtime for the performance that was recorded because they had to film an episode of the actual toku right after. Big oof.
Speaking of reruns leading to a renewal years later... Mysterious Cities of Gold kept reruning in French speaking markets and eventually got a continuation THIRTY YEARS after the original! Three extra seasons that completed the story! Not even a reboot, just picking up where the original left off!
@@HaydenTheHistorian for sure but I don't think it had quite the long lasting presence in did in the French markets. There were reruns well into the 2000s and many generations were exposed to it.
My goal for over 12 years was to get people to watch Precure. Anyone I met who I talked to anime about with, I’d strongly sneak it into conversation and hope it worked. Only recently, I managed to convinced my small friend group to watch it with me and while one of them isn’t too happy about it, the other two have been enjoying it quite a bit! Half of my life I’ve spent trying to get people to watch Precure, so finally getting to do it has made me so incredibly happy! Related to that, we’re finally finishing Yes! Precure 5 GoGo this week (I haven’t seen it in years so I’m rewatching it with them), so the timing on this video getting recommended to me was wild! 😂 I forgot to add, Cure Black and Cure White will forever be my favorites, with Cure Dream being a very close second! I just love them so much! 💖Especially as a girl growing up, I hated the way girls were usually shown in animation, so Precure kicking butt really empowered my child brain!😂
Thank you for this amazing vidro celebrating one of the best magical girl shows of all time ^^ I became a fan when I first watched Heartcatch which to this day is my all time favourite season of Precure ^^ I also watched all the other seasons and sone other favourites include Wonderful Precure, Delicious Party Precure, Hirogaru Sky Precure, Tropical Rouge Precure, KiraKira Precure A La Mode and Star Twinkle Precure ^^ If I meet anyone who wants to get into this, Ill definitely show them this video ^^
Of note about the "even girls want to be wild" line: the verb he used in Japanese is "abare", riffing on 2003's (boy-targeted as always) Super Sentai season Abaranger, which derives its title from the same verb
This video is something I never knew I needed. I watched it in two sittings, when usually for something this long, I’d need about six. There wasn’t a moment where I felt bored, as you pulled in new details every so often. I loved how you talked about other shows significant to Precure, not just Precure itself. Great video!(but I don’t even wanna KNOW how long the research took haha) As for Wonderful Precure, I agree with your thoughts on it so far. One thing I dislike about it so far though, is that there aren’t any villains. Villains are a significant part of Precure. But so far, there are only the Garugarus. I’m all for Precure trying out new things, but not having villains is just too much for me. I hope we get introduced to some soon.
gathering all of my research material and decorations cost me probably a couple hundred dollars and from beginning of researching to completion took around 5 months or so
That was a great video, and very informational. I can't wait to get around to Futari wa. So far I've only seen Tropical Rouge and Kirakira to the end, and made it halfway through several other seasons. Side note: I had not heard about Love to Beri until recently, when a song from the game went viral again as part of a throwback trend on Japanese TikTok, which makes sense since all the songs have associated dances and dances are what Tiktok is all about

OH MY GOODNESS AN ALMOST TWO HOUR LONG VIDEO ABOUT THE HISTORY OF PRECURE MY LIFE IS COMPLETE
REAL
RIGHT??
I remember trying to explain Precure to a Sailor Moon 'Fans' several months ago. (Or years, it has been pretty long)
Only for them to Chuck it up to "Oh, so basically, Precure is Sailor Moon Knock Off" and "Never Heard of it, it must not be that good"
I never wish too punch someone so much in the face
Yeah as a Sailor Moon fan it's so disheartening to see them put down any other Magical Girl franchise just because it's not popular and chuck it down to a "copy"
What's funny to me is that Pretty Cure is made by the same company so how could they copy and show they own?
I've watched a lot of Pretty Cure and Sailor Moon I can definitely say there way different other then being Magical Girls
Also for some reason they claim SM is the first Magical Girl show? Which it isn't...
All there points aren't valid at all
Oh, ouch! Even though I never heard of Pretty Cure without having looked deeply into Glitter Force, it's still seriously a big thing in Japan. I can't believe I went so long not knowing it existed. But Pretty Cure is great! Omg
literally they also were in denial that precure is much more famous in japan compared to sailor moon
@@slaypa Are you sure?😭 I perfer Pretty Cure but I don't think it's popular then SM right? SM even is VERY popular in the west and it's easy to find merch and stuff here
@@SUTAZZZ SM ofc very popular worldwide compared to precure but precure is pretty much more popular in japan
Finding out Nagisa, Cure Black, was in Kamen Rider Black as a child who was rescued by the hero crossed those two franchises over in my mind and hooked me into being a fan.

Why did name yourself Cure Black?

While Futari wa Precure was a success, It's actually Yes Precure 5 that popularized Precure to the point that it became household name in Japan on the same level as Kamen Rider or Super Sentai.
There is a reason why only Yes 5 that got 2 sequels season(GoGo and Otona 23) and Nozomi/Cure Dream is the undisputable most popular Cure of All Time(You can actually tell from watching every All Stars crossover, She always got a special treatment on the same level as Black and White)
It could be said that while Futari wa made the series, Yes 5 made the franchise
We praise Nozomi / Cure Dream as the Queen she is!
(Now this is confusing....)
The Christmas cake every year.
@@digitaltailsmon4096 queen indeed. she did marry a king after all lol
@@brony4869 Yep and no matter what people say I am eternally happy about that!
Just watching the subdued snark manifested in the GoGo final is evidence of a production revolt against the concept of ever making another full PreCure sequel series.
magical doremi was in my eyes the prototype of precure with its cute character design and magical power
my autism got so happy seeing an hour length video about precure history thank you for this. one of my all time favorite magical girl series next to doremi, sailor moon and mermaid melody

The title they went with made me wonder if they employ former DiC execs
Sexist Precure fans after completely missing the point of Henri’s character and the finale of Hugtto Precure: 🤪😘✌️

The IRONY😭
Saban dubbed Smile and Doki Doki, 4kids was long gone by the time Netflix added the two seasons , that was on Hans Saban, not Netflix themselves.

Did they make a bad video on MS content or something?

Do you have a link to where I can see that one please? I’ve seen dozens upon dozens of official yuri Precure art by the Kamikitas (what legends) but I never saw them draw gay dudes. That’s rad, would love to see it

happy to see a video celebrating this wonderful franchise that i loved so much i made a short lived abridged series of it lol
Oh god I remember that Abridged series it was wild
@@tiffany-chan1235 yeah, though now adays i'd have done better with the humor, some jokes didn't age well imo.
highly recommend Heartcatch Abridged though, it's humor ages far better and at least they got past ep1 lol
0:32 Now I understand why peoples say "Sailor Moon Crystal look like a generic magical girl show".
I'm not even three minutes in and already I am blown away by the editing. This will be such an amazing ride of a video.
For me, it’s between heart catch, smile and princess
of course its gotta be barack obama era precure
@@HaydenTheHistorianan absolute classic 😌🎀
I enjoyed this video as a Pretty Cure fan and made me appreciate and love the franchise even more! Spectacular job to you and everyone who contributed!!
man this is so yet a great story to ever know, it really gives me a happy feeling, how awesome the world biggest franchise really shown people how it helps them overcome their problems and take care of it all
it really helps me overcome my problems and i'm happy this series is the one for me
what a true gem of anime culture i ever known and love truly ^^
Finally, The Lore we ACTUALLY deserve to learn. In serious, having finished S1 Futari wa Precure but prepping up Max Heart, it's nice having some clarification on "26 episode show gets 70 more AND movies than it knows what to do with story wise", tho it honestly feels more in line with what little I know of Tokusatsu production lines of scheduled on 13 ep arc developments but constantly adapting over the course of the show.
I'm also impressed not just on the depth of production trivia on previous work like Air Master and Nadja, but convincingly using not just parallel thematic comparisons but fuller episode synopsis to compare to a Boy-Girl falling out vs Futari Wa's Iconic Duo that has yet to reach the same "totally-just" BFFs...possibly even more highlighting that writing in "absence" of a male character that both Honoka and Nagisa feel much more rounded and equal, perhaps from experience but perhaps also from not having a gender-centric plot beat so heavily characterize the two leads
Among the many pieces of knowledge that historically build and weave what kind of force Precure would become, I also deeply appreciate the candid talk about *ahem* Magical Girl Sexualization (in the Otaku paradigm), which has kinda re-escalated in a lot of recent discourses.
Final word from a passerby, even discounting the "bad hetero romance" as standard Shoujo fare, Wakamiya Henri alone has sent Males in Precure progress back at least 20 years and even with Rosemary and Tsubasa, we're STILL in Misandry debt for his crimes.
honestly i made the nsfw as expansive as it is just to put that naoko takeuchi quote in ngl lmao
I remember i have a crush on Nagisa Misumi. She's a Tomboy yet a fun personality,i love her silliness.
@@HaydenTheHistorianI seen a Video of Lizzo Dancing with a Cure Wonder Mascot.

OH MY GOD SOMEONE IS ACTUALLY TALKING ABOUT PRECURE THIS IS THE GREATEST DAY EVER
IS THAT SAILORGUARDIANHOPE AT THE START?!

I can't imagine Precure still running since going on for the most of my life

That was a beautiful video on pretty cure origins and your story. Well done, it's not always easy. But it takes great effort and heart to share this. You are not alone.
When you point out Ashita no Naja have time skip sequel manga i immediately shouted "WHERE? "🤣🤣

FEATURE LENGTH PRECURE DOCUMENTARY IM SO HAPPY.
PRECURE GETTING ATTENTION FINALLY YESSSS
I forgot how good your editing is
I know I don't speak for everyone, but as a man, not only do I not feel the need for Precure to be directed towards me or other men, but I also don't *want* Precure to be directed towards us.
WOOOOO i really hope this brings a bit more traction and attention to precure as a whole. it’s such an amazing franchise!

A PRECURE VIDEO ESSAY THATS ALMOST TWO HOURS LONG??? MY LIFE IS COMPLETE
PRECURE MENTIONEDDDDD
Pretty cure is way too big to be talked about so little outside of Japan, man. I may not keep up with it anymore, but the franchise is still precious to me.
Me: (watches video essay on precure)
Also me: ( hears kindaichi case files mentioned and gets more excited because it one of my favorite detective anime/manga)
HOLY CRAP A NEARLY 2 HOUR LONG VIDEO ON PRECURE OH MY GOOOOOOD
Edit: Also love the look into the creators of the franchise, absolute banger video
Do you know Corrector Yui? there was a suit who was mainly black and white. It was awesome!
i have seen a bit of it idk if i got that far yet though
I love Precure so much! It makes me so happy to see other people talking about it, especially a guy.
Hayden is actually nonbinary!! They touch on it in the video and how shoujo series have impacted their experience with gender 🩷👉👈
i appreciate the sentiment!
Also thanks for bringing up Nadja (as I didn't know that anime existed and it really looks interesting; don't know when I will get around to watching it since my backlog is so large)
select episodes in futari wa like 8 and 42 clear pretty much the rest of the franchise but yeah overall max heart felt more cozy and fun. nadja is amazing, it really blew me away when i watched it, far surpassed any expectations i had for it
Yeah!! Spread the good word about Precure/ Pretty Cure! This deserves to be as well known in the west!
I became a fan in 2022 after watching Go! Pretty Cure and it ended up becoming my favorite season hands down. Heck. I even used this season as the crux of my 40page college thesis about magical girls. xD

Thanks for making this video!! I wish pretty cure was more well known!!
from what i recall, Toei had to make a decision on whether to continue making precure anime or drop the franchise altogether. Fresh could have been the last precure season, but thankfully it did well, and the precure franchise is still alive and well.
As a sentai/rider fan I'm so happy to see love for precure!! While i'm not a major fan of precure seeing it getting love in an essay is always welcomed
Just appreciating the effort you put into making this video ❤
I'm pleased to learn more about the show, and touched you shared your heart with us as well
18:00 - You’re not far off dude.
Big oof.
Banger video, Hayden.
And yes, Sailor Stars OP is clearly the best. Just like Heartcatch is the best Precure season. Everyone knows it to be true

I forgot to add, Cure Black and Cure White will forever be my favorites, with Cure Dream being a very close second! I just love them so much! 💖Especially as a girl growing up, I hated the way girls were usually shown in animation, so Precure kicking butt really empowered my child brain!😂
Fingers crossed Toei's recent shareholders meeting was serious about expanding Pretty Cure overseas. 🤞

Great video!(but I don’t even wanna KNOW how long the research took haha)
As for Wonderful Precure, I agree with your thoughts on it so far. One thing I dislike about it so far though, is that there aren’t any villains. Villains are a significant part of Precure. But so far, there are only the Garugarus. I’m all for Precure trying out new things, but not having villains is just too much for me. I hope we get introduced to some soon.
