This is very popular in the bmw community. He basically covers the tiny perforations in the pipes to allow more sound to travel and might also but and re route some of the exhaust passages.
It’s not some insane secret all they do is weld your perforated internal tubes shut and remove any glass packing from the Helmholtz chamber and it’s instant better sound. This has been around for some time. It’s quite a neat cheap mod not sure why he hides what he’s doing when every gear head knows lol.
As a prospective CLA45 buyer, that wants to mod from the get go, this channel is a god send. Barely any A/CLA45 content out there of this gen. As for the exhaust mod. Super smart move. Had a RS3 8Y which was the development car for Scorpions OPF back system. Barely made a difference, couldn’t imagine dropping 2k for it. Wondering if you’ve considered a valve controller too, so the valves are permanently open on race etc? I understand they still open and close at various points regardless of the mode, due to all of the sound and emissions regs.

GREAT MOD!!!, quite simple, remove resonator by cutting on the welds, straight sleeve the resonator, and reweld! , pin the butterfly valve on the muffler!!! That's how i would do it!

Thanks Hyaweh! It has been so fun to drive since having it done! I think it’s no longer than an hour or 2 but Paul will be able to confirm. I probably slowed him down with my filming so might be even quicker. His site is really secure and gated and he has a little waiting area upstairs too. Worth the trip!

Thank you! Better to be safe than sorry so I’d recommend declaring it just to be safe and for peace of mind. It would be very difficult to know it was modded though without removing the exhaust.

Not at all. If you pop it in comfort mode and close the values with the exhaust button it is silent on the motorway. Only really hear road noise from the wheels.
Thanks Jamie, I’ve found nice all week cruising with no real drone concerns. With values closed it’s pretty quiet, you can hear the exhaust is more angry when going through towns at 30 but it’s not obnoxious and would be fine with family. Because the button and values all function as stock it’s very tame. il make sure to include some comfort cruising in the POV vid for you 👍

I’m saving launch control for a upcoming video. Going to be testing 0-60 in all the modes with a dragy etc should be a fun one ;) I don’t mind paying a bit more when it comes to someone cutting up my exhaust.

@@ABAUTOAMG yeah it is 15k aud I’m told from my MB dealer, pretty much the whole back door gets replaced, crazy… ;). Btw I just got my windscreen replaced for 1.9k aud, got a crack from freeway stone-chip; very surprised I got the crack only 9,000km on… nothing is cheap with MB I guess
Hello ABAUTO, im following you since 2021 with your C43. I had also for 3 years a C43 facelift and she's sold. Now I am looking for something others. My question for you is .. Do you like the CLA45s more than the C43 ? Does the CLA45s has rattles inside? Is the interior built quality as good as in the C43 facelift? If you should give a score from 0 - 10 for the C43 and the CLA45s, what score would you give!? Thank you for your honest answers! 🙂
Hey! Sorry for not getting back to you till now. The CLA45s has been great, felt like a monster after the C43 it’s very quick and much more agile around bends. The interior is more aesthetically pleasing than the C43 but not as nice quality in some places. Mine developed quite a few rattles so I had to take it to Mercedes a few times to fix. This is also due to the ride being firming though too and you get more vibrations and things to rattle. Amazing car though had lots of fun in mine. It’s quicker and more sporty than the C43 and I love the look and shape.

Basically he's cut open the Res to change them re weld them so the exhaust looks exactly the same because everything is still there but secretly changed 🤔😂👍
Yeah it’s all wielded back together on the back side so it’s impossible to see it’s been changed unless you fully remove the exhaust from the car and flip it over 👍

Hey, thank you. I think he made two cuts one in the back box and one in the resonator. Then he gutted them out and wielded them back shut. A good exhaust shop should be able to do this and get similar results 👍
@@anony-mousex While I appreciate your comments and checking out my videos I really don’t want my viewers to worry about this so I just want to assure everyone that this mod will not fail an MOT. It’s a very minor resonator and backbox modification. The OPF and Cat etc are all here. If you want to remove the OPF and decat with modern Mercedes you have to tune the car to stage 1 and you may have MOT issues. There’s no reason this mod here I’ve had would ever fail an MOT.
@@ABAUTOAMG I do enjoy your videos mate but I think you should be more honest / do a little more research before you promise this kind of thing to your viewers... If you check the MOT emissions test guidelines online you can see one of the aspects of the test is a noise test, and with this mod you will absolutely fail that test (since this is a modern car with silencers, that you have gutted): www.gov.uk/guidance/mot-inspection-manual-for-private-passenger-and-light-commercial-vehicles/8-nuisance So Id still say that failure of MOT is a possibility, and people should be aware of that risk..!
Hey Blak, il be honest I haven’t really looked into these yet, perhaps once the car is out of warranty but for now I’m happy with the stock power on the UK roads :)
How did it impact your insurance premiums? mods like this right now are not looked favourably by the insurance companies and some are picky they void the insurance. Did you have any any issues when you declared the mods to them? Also, what does it mean for the warranty of a new car? I am guessing you will need to change the car back to stock before you return it as technically you can't mod a car on PCP?
Just an small admin fee on insurance for me but depends on your provider. I’ve modded many cars on PCP. Normally you sell the car as if you own it at the end of the period or early if the cars worth more than you have left to pay so as long as a dealer wants to buy it it does not really matter. A lease is another story though since you have to hand the car back rather than sell it. Warranty wise in theory this should not be a problem too but I never promise as you never know till you have an issue. I’m not worried about mine at all though I can say.

Congrats., great mod. Are you contemplating on fitting a catted downpipe. It appears no one has done one on the new 45Ss with the turbo fitted to rear of the engine. I believe it would be a hit.
Thanks Mark, that would sound amazing but the main issue I’ve heard with the downpipes is you have to tune the ECU if you swap them out due to the OPF. Loving how it sounds currently but perhaps in the future :)
Wow ! Sweet mod, would definitely say value for money. I may book in once I hit the 1k breaking in period. I did have a question to ask you regarding your car - when I’m turning at low speeds (full lock) my CLA feels strange, almost like vibrations/rough turning. Have you also noticed this ?

The upshifts and pops now some very similar to the C43 but there’s a lot more of them. Overall it is louder than the C43 now but I bet If I took the C43 to Paul it would sound insane!
Did you check and I mean double check that was your exhaust going back on the car ?. I’ll tell you why…. 1. You can do the same thing on the Porsche cayman s. A company will gut three components from the exhaust. However the prices vary if you’re willing to donate your exhaust for another one that is gutted.
Great mod, I've seen this done to many cars, definitely a much cheaper alternative to any full exhaust system, and it also doesn't require a tune. @ABAUTO I have one important question though: is it much louder in comfort mode with the exhaust closed? When I'm driving with two small babies in the back I sometimes want the car to be quiet. Thanks for your answer! :)

I can’t say for sure but I’ve had no problems with warranty work with the mod. In theory the only way it should void it is if the problem you’re claiming is being caused by the exhaust mod which is unlikely.

@nickmahi2789 Good thing is they wouldn’t know it was modded unless they removed the exhaust from the car also since he does the work on the top facing side.
It’s been great because you can still close the valves and the rpms stay low in comfort mode. I will include some comfort mode cruising in the POV drive vid 👍
There’s always a small element of risk from any mod but overall I’m not too concerned. It would be highly unlikely that this mod would be the cause of an engine failure. If I had tampered with the ECU or tuned the car then I’d be worried because the whole engine wouldn’t be covered. You should always proceed with caution with any mods I say though. As you can see here too the exhaust is easy to remove so it would not be a big job to replace with a brand new stock exhaust I’d imagine in the worst case scenario.
Thank you! The C43 sounded amazing but I’d say it’s very close now! Love the V6 but I think the pops and crackles are a bit better on the CLA45s with the new mod. I was thinking though imagine how good the C43 would of sounded If I took it to Paul!

Hey Mo, that’s exciting bet you can’t wait! I’m not 100% sure If I am honest but I personally would wait to do it after the 1000 miles run in. You won’t really be able to enjoy the mod while your running the engine in anyway and it would be a nice to experience the change after covering some miles! :)

Honestly inside seems to be the same sound… as everything is enchanced with the speakers.. outside sound amazing.. but as I said only in countries which does not care about exhaust modifications… too bad I cant do that to mine and need to pay 5k for akrapovic
There’s a huge difference from the inside with the gear shifts and the crackles. If you drop the window down too it sounds amazing. The car is quite loud inside stock due to the mic/speaker system but it’s definitely a bit deeper with the mod.
This wont work with just a res and backbbox mod. You're dictated by the GPF. I've had my resonator sleeved and back box done by a reputable custom exhaust manufacturer. The difference is minimal due to the restrictions from the GPF. The guys I went to are adamant that this car has additional mods (Pops mapped in, GPF work) We've had my exhaust disconnected just behind the resonator and done a sound test to which it still remains the same albeight louder but no pops or bangs due to the GPF doing its work. Anyone thinkng about this mod, start by trying to get past the GPF somehow without throwing up EML issues. To me, the comments are misleading. (Happy to be proven wrong thought). 😁
Hey, just to clarify and hopefully help here I can 100% confirm the car has had no gpf work or any mapping. I bought the car from brand new so I know the history from the factory. There’s no reason for me to lie if the car was tuned. If I tuned it or did ECU work I’d cover it in a video as that would be great content. I think the exhaust shop are confused because they think this mod added the pops and bangs. They were already there, the car stock has pops and bangs this mod just opened the exhaust and enhanced them and made them louder. Did they test the car in race mode? It has way more pops and bangs in race mode. You get some in sport+ but more in race mode. There’s pretty much 0 pops in every other drive mode even with the mod. You can’t touch the gpf without tuning the car sadly which I’d never do while under warranty. I hope this helps clear things up.

Hello ABAUTO, im following you since 2021 with your C43.
I had also for 3 years a C43 facelift and she's sold. Now I am looking for something others.
My question for you is .. Do you like the CLA45s more than the C43 ? Does the CLA45s has rattles inside? Is the interior built quality as good as in the C43 facelift?

Hey! Sorry for not getting back to you till now. The CLA45s has been great, felt like a monster after the C43 it’s very quick and much more agile around bends. The interior is more aesthetically pleasing than the C43 but not as nice quality in some places. Mine developed quite a few rattles so I had to take it to Mercedes a few times to fix. This is also due to the ride being firming though too and you get more vibrations and things to rattle. Amazing car though had lots of fun in mine. It’s quicker and more sporty than the C43 and I love the look and shape.

Thanks! For GoPros I use the standard suction mounts. Having a sun roof is great for getting the center interior shot.
Basically he's cut open the Res to change them re weld them so the exhaust looks exactly the same because everything is still there but secretly changed 🤔😂👍
Yeah it’s all wielded back together on the back side so it’s impossible to see it’s been changed unless you fully remove the exhaust from the car and flip it over 👍

Hey, thank you. I think he made two cuts one in the back box and one in the resonator. Then he gutted them out and wielded them back shut. A good exhaust shop should be able to do this and get similar results 👍

@@anony-mousex While I appreciate your comments and checking out my videos I really don’t want my viewers to worry about this so I just want to assure everyone that this mod will not fail an MOT. It’s a very minor resonator and backbox modification. The OPF and Cat etc are all here. If you want to remove the OPF and decat with modern Mercedes you have to tune the car to stage 1 and you may have MOT issues. There’s no reason this mod here I’ve had would ever fail an MOT.
@@ABAUTOAMG I do enjoy your videos mate but I think you should be more honest / do a little more research before you promise this kind of thing to your viewers... If you check the MOT emissions test guidelines online you can see one of the aspects of the test is a noise test, and with this mod you will absolutely fail that test (since this is a modern car with silencers, that you have gutted): www.gov.uk/guidance/mot-inspection-manual-for-private-passenger-and-light-commercial-vehicles/8-nuisance
So Id still say that failure of MOT is a possibility, and people should be aware of that risk..!

Hey Blak, il be honest I haven’t really looked into these yet, perhaps once the car is out of warranty but for now I’m happy with the stock power on the UK roads :)
Does this Mod affect the warranty? Also is 1000 miles too low to have it done ?
How did it impact your insurance premiums? mods like this right now are not looked favourably by the insurance companies and some are picky they void the insurance. Did you have any any issues when you declared the mods to them? Also, what does it mean for the warranty of a new car? I am guessing you will need to change the car back to stock before you return it as technically you can't mod a car on PCP?
Just an small admin fee on insurance for me but depends on your provider. I’ve modded many cars on PCP. Normally you sell the car as if you own it at the end of the period or early if the cars worth more than you have left to pay so as long as a dealer wants to buy it it does not really matter. A lease is another story though since you have to hand the car back rather than sell it. Warranty wise in theory this should not be a problem too but I never promise as you never know till you have an issue. I’m not worried about mine at all though I can say.

Power feels exactly the same although my 0-60 is probably lower because I can’t stop letting go of the pedal to hear the storm of pops 😅

Congrats., great mod. Are you contemplating on fitting a catted downpipe. It appears no one has done one on the new 45Ss with the turbo fitted to rear of the engine. I believe it would be a hit.
Thanks Mark, that would sound amazing but the main issue I’ve heard with the downpipes is you have to tune the ECU if you swap them out due to the OPF. Loving how it sounds currently but perhaps in the future :)

How this sound especially the pops and upshift bangs compared to your old c43?
The upshifts and pops now some very similar to the C43 but there’s a lot more of them. Overall it is louder than the C43 now but I bet If I took the C43 to Paul it would sound insane!

1. You can do the same thing on the Porsche cayman s. A company will gut three components from the exhaust.
However the prices vary if you’re willing to donate your exhaust for another one that is gutted.

Great mod, I've seen this done to many cars, definitely a much cheaper alternative to any full exhaust system, and it also doesn't require a tune.

I can’t say for sure but I’ve had no problems with warranty work with the mod. In theory the only way it should void it is if the problem you’re claiming is being caused by the exhaust mod which is unlikely.

What’s it like on motorway doing a steady 70? Any drone in cabin?
It’s been great because you can still close the valves and the rpms stay low in comfort mode. I will include some comfort mode cruising in the POV drive vid 👍

After you cut the resonator off, did it come up any coding on the dash？
We kept the resonator on but cut open and modified the inside. No coding needed, haven’t had any errors at all :)
What are you thoughts on that and your Mercedes engine warranty?
There’s always a small element of risk from any mod but overall I’m not too concerned. It would be highly unlikely that this mod would be the cause of an engine failure. If I had tampered with the ECU or tuned the car then I’d be worried because the whole engine wouldn’t be covered. You should always proceed with caution with any mods I say though. As you can see here too the exhaust is easy to remove so it would not be a big job to replace with a brand new stock exhaust I’d imagine in the worst case scenario.

Thank you! The C43 sounded amazing but I’d say it’s very close now! Love the V6 but I think the pops and crackles are a bit better on the CLA45s with the new mod. I was thinking though imagine how good the C43 would of sounded If I took it to Paul!

Hey, Thanks! It really does transform the car! I know for sure that the silencer and muffler were both cut into and modified inside. Hopefully your exhaust shop can work out what was changed inside from the sound or get it close 👍

Hey Mo, that’s exciting bet you can’t wait! I’m not 100% sure If I am honest but I personally would wait to do it after the 1000 miles run in. You won’t really be able to enjoy the mod while your running the engine in anyway and it would be a nice to experience the change after covering some miles! :)

Honestly inside seems to be the same sound… as everything is enchanced with the speakers.. outside sound amazing.. but as I said only in countries which does not care about exhaust modifications… too bad I cant do that to mine and need to pay 5k for akrapovic
There’s a huge difference from the inside with the gear shifts and the crackles. If you drop the window down too it sounds amazing. The car is quite loud inside stock due to the mic/speaker system but it’s definitely a bit deeper with the mod.

No engine remap required?
Nope! Just a simple mod to the exhaust itself. No error codes or ECU tuning at all. Values and button all work as normal. This mod is perfect!
This wont work with just a res and backbbox mod. You're dictated by the GPF. I've had my resonator sleeved and back box done by a reputable custom exhaust manufacturer. The difference is minimal due to the restrictions from the GPF.
The guys I went to are adamant that this car has additional mods (Pops mapped in, GPF work)
We've had my exhaust disconnected just behind the resonator and done a sound test to which it still remains the same albeight louder but no pops or bangs due to the GPF doing its work.
Anyone thinkng about this mod, start by trying to get past the GPF somehow without throwing up EML issues.

Hey, just to clarify and hopefully help here I can 100% confirm the car has had no gpf work or any mapping. I bought the car from brand new so I know the history from the factory.
There’s no reason for me to lie if the car was tuned. If I tuned it or did ECU work I’d cover it in a video as that would be great content.
I think the exhaust shop are confused because they think this mod added the pops and bangs. They were already there, the car stock has pops and bangs this mod just opened the exhaust and enhanced them and made them louder.
Did they test the car in race mode? It has way more pops and bangs in race mode. You get some in sport+ but more in race mode. There’s pretty much 0 pops in every other drive mode even with the mod.
You can’t touch the gpf without tuning the car sadly which I’d never do while under warranty.
I hope this helps clear things up.
