Lyrics:
I never ask you where you go
After I leave you in the morning
We go our different ways to separate situations
It's not that easy anymore
Today I do what must be done
I give my time to total strangers
But now it feels as though the the day goes on forever
More than it ever did before
Until the night, until the night
I just might make it
Until the night, until the night
When I see you again

I thought for years I was the only one that loved this song - I shared on social media with no reaction in the last 10 years! You are my people!
Same here!!!
I have a dream of doing this on The Voice..
This is my very very favourite of Billy Joel AND one of my favourites among so many Great singers and groups. I love how it starts slow, calm, and keeps growing AND Is so genuinly intense. Regards from México City😊🎉
@@marlaluna1926 I also listen to the instrumental version of this song. Some songs have a power within, and can stand on their own even without words...it's an experience to be savored every day. ♡♡♡
@@jimhernandez3563 ' have a Power within', you couldn't have expressed it better. This Is what 'Until the Night' Is all About, in ITS so very unique way.
That bridge: one of the most satisfying crescendos in all of rock!
Absolutely! "As they closing it down, im gonna open it up"
Da#n straight! Goosebumps!
That bridge yes... the bridge of my teens and ever since ... it really had a hold on me 🥰
In fact, I'd be so impatient for the bridge to come I'd fast forward to the bridge
Such a great song.
Love seeing Liberty beat the hell out of his kit.
This was the pinnacle of the Billy Joel Band. Liberty DeVitto (drums), Doug Stegmeyer (bass, vocals), Russell Javors (rhythm guitar, vocals), David Brown (lead guitar), David Lebolt (keyboards), Mark Rivera (sax).. Russell Javors's vocal parts with Billy at the breakdown and buildup at 4:55. So good.
Michael Grosvenor No doubt. The fallout between Billy and Liberty is quite a shame, as Chuck Bergi doesn't hold a candle to Lib. I like Mark on sax, but I also thought Richie was quite solid, too. you take this band and add the good pieces Billy has today (Dave Rosenthal, Mike Delguidice, Carl Fischer, and Crystal Taliefero), it's hard to imagine how awesome that band would be.
Agree about Richie. I'd rather have him on sax than Mark Rivera - never cared for him on sax. Other than that, yes this was Billy and the Band in their prime. sad that there's nobody left from the original band.
They were an incredible band. I love Mark Rivera's sax, but miss Richie's Hammond. Listen to The Entertainer at 21:50 here; so good! ruclips.net/video/VtENAk4w5HI/видео.html
Man I mis the old band. 😥😥😥 "blonde over blue" is nothing like this
I’ve always Billy Joel was at his best with this band in this era both performance wise and creatively. He began to decline after The Nylon Curtain although he had many great songs later, he never recaptured the brilliance of this time
This superb song is an Anthem for my life….. thank you Billy. ‘While they’re closing it down I’m gonna open it up’ 💛
Brilliant hey
I haven't heard every song Billy has written, but even so this has to his finest. I just can't imagine he has one better. I was at a wedding reception with my girlfriend in the early eighties and there was Billy and Phil just a few tables away relaxing after the previous night concert. We went over and met him and my girlfriend asked for his autograph. Phil stared at us and said hey what about my autograph ?
Best song that almost no one knows about.
the saxo solo !
I am 54 and I cannot believe I missed this one
@@pjhaction It's from the 52nd Street album in 1978, the first commercially mass produced CD.
I always thought that it was the best song on the album.
I've known about it since the first time I listened to that great album 40 years. It's simply a fantastic song and I really wish he'd play it at his concerts today!
My favorite Billy Joel tune. The heart and soul in this as well as the sax. What's not to love. Fan from Nova Scotia, Canada.
The best song on his best album….52nd Street.
My favourite album too. Jam packed with hits. This song is just so different than any of his others, it’s a masterpiece of not being one dimensional.

This is just one of his BEST songs!!! I've played this song on repeat for hours when I was like 19-20! STILL now at 37 I am so in love with his talent!!!
You have good taste in music!
I listened to it over and over in the late 70's and many times since then. I love it!
For me the highlight of the superb 52nd Street! They absolutely nail it here: a performance for the ages and a truly goosebump-inducing climax. The atmosphere is just electric - it must have been extraordinary to have been in that audience. Even Joel up on stage has that “WTF just happened here?????” look at the end. Fabulous!
Best song ever recorded
This is absolutely superb, how can such a simple concept of leaving to go to work or whatever, and coming back home, can turn into this creation is beyond me. The whole band were so polished, this is the best music that I can ever recall.
Billy's most underrated song ever.
I totally agree!
It's a terrific song, and brilliantly performed by everyone. But when Mark Rivera blows into that sax his soul comes out the other end of it. The guy is a musical god, imho.
Totally agree! and I prefer that live version than the one of the album :)
Oh dear. I was thinking as I listened to the solo that Mark didn't make the sax bleed like Ritchie did on the album. Strange really because I'm usually a bigger fan of live performance (raw and energised). Maybe I'm just way too passionate about this being the song (and album) that I listened to after my very first heartbreak (at 15!). Perfect.
He also plays the great sax break in Foreigner's Urgent.
@@Tanmag11 Yep, although the legendary Junior Walker does take over for the solo on that one. Still, Rivera is super-talented...and so underrecognized!
Ur soooooo right!!!
I just discovered this song today, I’ve always loved Billy Joel, but vocally this might be his best song.
Definition a favourite of mine
52nd Street and "Scenes from an Italian Restaurant" are his best two albums IMO . Captain Jack is my fav song.
I was once asked by a New Yorker which Billy Joel song was my favorite. When I said "Until the Night" he was incredulous.
I stand by my choice.
It is definitely one of his very best songs...
Mine too!
@@coolaunt516 I'll stand beside u on this one.
I agree with you! My fave Billy Joel song!
Absolutely my favorite song by Billy Joel! Love his deep voice & the drums & the saxophone guy! Amazing!
Its hard to choose a favorite Billy album but this 52nd Street alvum was up there as one of his best with songs like Honesty and Zanzibar
always loved this song - but this live performance takes it to another level. Very powerful.
Now THAT'S what I call MUSIC!
What an incredible performance...and kudos to Russell Javors for his great voice in it too!
Absolutely savage. How did they do this without spontaneously combusting? How is the stage not up in flames after this?
idek, but if i did that, I'd be GONE-
Billy Joel - what can I say - poet supreme - what a guy!
DAMNNNNNNN
Damn! Totally pulls me in every single time. Best song he ever did.
I’ve been doing a deep dive into Billy Joel songs I’m not familiar with… this and Streetlife Serenader are masterpieces!

This album is still brilliant 38 years later. But so underrated. It will always be in my top five. There are so many songs on the album rarely or never heard on the radio but will be in my head forever. Still know all the words to all the songs and I got the album when I was 9. This song is so beautifully written and poignant. Still holds up.
Indeed, you are so right....
This album introduced me to the genius that is Billy Joel.
Same here Don't know why his songs are so underrated
I still play this album all time yet never get's airplay
Under rated? This won for Grammy’s best album of the year!
Do you not know the full meaning of anything it is to me everything
One of my favorite live videos of Mr. Joel. Very animated and clean sounding…
My favorite song & video by Billy Joel! It still gives me goosebumps!
His most underrated track, for sure.
His band was stellar, drummer DeVitto so underrated
I don't think Liberty is underrated inside the music industry. He is respected and does a lot of session work with major artists
I saw him break his Snare drum at Jones Beach he was hitting so hard. Changed in mid song. My first Billy Joel concert
@@rhagan2513 I think Lib hits the drums TOO hard
I remember hearing in the mackadown pub in Birmingham when I was 19 😢it blew my brains out just astonishing song
I have not heard this in years but still remember the words. Those are the songs of our lives!
Beautiful Song this live version is Fantastic 🎹🎷🎙️❤
Had this on 8 track in my 68 Mustang. Driving home to West Chester up ft Rt 52 from my job to home. Back out to a night on the town. Utube has brought back so many terrific memories and this version is over the moon good.
8 track and 68 mustang says it all. Damn...
Another ex-Westchesterite here ...route 9A....cheers
This show is from 12/29/82. The complete concert on DVD is long overdue. The complete show was/is:

3. Prelude/Angry Young Man
4. Piano Man
5. Don't Ask Me Why *excluded from video

17.Sometimes A Fantasy

22. Souvenir
and there's also the between song banter. All of that was cut from the video too.
Where's The Orchestra? ? Really? I didn't know they performed that too!!
Interesting :)
Yep. I've been sitting here with the VHS tape for years and years wondering "how in the hell can this NOT be on DVD?!"..awesome concert...all this time, and I didn't realize there were extra tracks :- )
Those people who have excluded those songs are complete assholes
Needs a BLURAY release a FULL SET release too. Hopefully they release it
Mike Rotch why did they omit Stiletto and Until the Night?
Those were great songs!
It’s like the US version of Revolver, it has serious holes.
I listened to this song 1000 times in the early 80s. Still love it.
At least I'm not the only one!
Me too. Brings tears to my eyes
Lived through the mid 60s/70/and 80/s when music will never be equaled again.
There were so many great Joel songs from back in the day.
This is most under rated and best piece of music he has ever done.
Never ever gets old...
Rosalinda's eyes was always my favorite It was about his mother who landed in Cuba because of America immigrant quotas She just passed at 92.We have her to thank for Billy's music, when he was 8 his mother sat him down and demanded he learn to play piano
Absolutely AWESOME. Ive loved this song since 1978 when I bought "52nd Street".
I can't believe they pulled that off live with all the power and glory of the album version! Chills!!!
What a band!!!!!
🙏❤🌹 Doug 🌹❤🙏
This is awesome
That part of the song that goes. Im just beginning to live.... Im just beginning to feel.... almost brings me to tears.
cheyboo67 , the chord progression is simply amazing, he is such a great composer!
I had the album. In my 20s, I didn't care about this. Now at 47, I like this song so much. So touching. Love from Japan.
Seeing The Sergeant singing makes me sad but happy to see him here
What an album. The first I listened to all the way through as I was discovering Billy at 15 (in 1988). It was 10 years old but brand new to me (apart from the hit singles). From Zanzibar onwards, there is such a magical quality to the album. Rosalinda's Eyes feels like I'm watching him in a Puerto Rican band, then hanging out with Geo drinking cheap wine and from the final, rapturous moments of this song, we take a swarve, leisurely stroll down 52nd Street. It's such a gorgeous "listen in the dark" album...and wasn't it the first to be made into CD? Genius all round.
Obviously a stunning song! No doubt in his top 10 ❤
Man I love this song plain and Simple ❤🎙️🎶
Reminds me of the best times of my life. Grew up in Rockland County, NY....so much simpler back then .
I was in jersey. Me too
One of my fave Billy Joel songs too.
My favorite Bill J song.. Saw him on this tour.... Beautiful...
played at a good freinds funeral - a haunting song that just does to some the amazing
Absolutely one of the best Billy Joel songs ever. Quite Spectorish but completely Billy Joel. Love it.
Maybe one of his best if not the best!
I love Billy Joel and this song is magnificent!!
What a mindblowing performance! Goosebumps!
Amazing!! "Until the night" is one of my favorite "Billy Joel"'s songs!!
This is absolutely golden! Saw Billy 4 times but never saw this song performed live. I always thought that this piece really showcased Billy Joel's genius for song arrangement and orchestration.
I've seen Billy 4 times, once one his River Of Dreams tour and once in Ohio State stadium with 80,000 people with Elton John (a little after River Of Dreams tour). The last two times were in Philly in '97 and '99. The last time was special because he sang "An Innocent Man" and the stars must've been right and the Philly crowd which always have adored Billy and he them-- he hit the high note in Innocent Man, no stunt singer like he had started using around then when he didn't feel he could hit that note any more-- People were in tears, me included, knowing that there would not be many more people who would hear him do that live. Thanks for all the happiness, all the goosebumps, Billy.
That is a great story to share. I wish I there to hear that. Is there a link to a video of this performance?
@@jtal19 Hey Jerry--- I have looked and so far unsuccsessful...however your comment has inspired me to start searching for the ticket stub for that show (it was COLD and at whatever they were calling the SPECTRUM in the late '90's)...I will hit you up with that if I get lucky and find the (to me) Holy Grail. (hopefully VIDEO, but I'd take audio...beggars and all that!)
It was a show when he was using "The Natural" as the last bit of music before the house lights went down, and the place started to SHAKE!! Got goosebumps just typing it!!
Thanks for your comment, if it's out there, maybe I can find it!!
PEACE!!
@@1060michaelg sounds like your a huge BJ fan. I rediscovered Billy about a year ago and was blown away by how many great songs he has. Just about every song is wonderful to listen to. I went to see Joel for the first time on January 25 2020 at MSG and the show was fantastic. Sold out and people there of all ages truly enjoying Evey moment. I would listen to Joel in the 80s and I bought his greatest hits CD in the late 90s. I have all his music at my fingertips through Google play Music (paid app) and have created several playlists of his songs. If you can find that ticket stub take a photo to share it with me and whatever else would be cool. I've watched so many BJ videos, interviews, rare performances, etc and I have huge respect for him. I was planning on seeing him in concert again in Michigan this July but damn Coronavirus has upset everything. Well thanks again Michael and look forward to your BJ memorabilia!
Loved this since he first published it!! 🥰
Started listening to Billy Joel was I was kid, maybe 7 years old. My first concert was Billy at MSG. Saw him shut down Shea. Seen him perform probably 8-10 times. I'm giving this performance a #1 seed in the Tournament of Best Billy Joel performances.
Wow... a masterpiece!
Most definitely!
Just a total underrated classic from Billy. This song never gets the airplay it deserves. Modern commercial FM radio is a joke.
+Juliette Prowse Probably explains why I listen to college radio stations like William Paterson 88.7 and WFUV 90.7 out of Fordham University. Too many tight playlists on FM radio these days.
+Juliette Prowse Well glad to see you and your boyfriend survived the experience. Check out WFUV.org. I think you'd like the music variety.
Radio is in the hands of such a lot of fools
tryin' to anaesthetise the way that you feel.
It was a beautiful song
But it ran too long
If you're gonna have a hit
You gotta make it fit
So they cut it down to 3.05
Sirius brought back the Billy Joel Channel (ch 70), and it's the only reason I'm keeping it. The first time they played this song, I almost went off the road!
Billy Joel is really channeling Bill Medley in the vocals here, especially in the bridge. And when you hear Bikkding the song, you can tell that Billy wrote it with him and Bobby in mind, Great stuff!
I absolutely love this song a beautiful hidden gem from the Great Billy Joel ❤🎙️🎶
One of his best all time.
Lots of interesting facts about this song and The Nylon Curtain (mentioned in this thread). This may be my favorite BJ song, along with She's Right On Time, Vienna, and Scenes From an Italian Restaurant. I have seen BJ from the time he was playing solo at coffee houses until his last stadium tour. I took a 10 year hiatus (as he did)_ and saw him about five years ago during a New Years Eve performances in Ft. Lauderdale. He Played THIS SONG! I lost it completely. I saw him again a couple of years ago at Dodger Stadium and he played it again! I think he likes it as much as we do. Billy has that amazing talent to be able to sound like most tenor male singers. In the early days he used to cover songs in his set impersonating such singers as Paul McCartney, Bruce Springsteen, Joe Cocker, Paul Simon, etc. He tells a story about Phil Ramone telling him that many of the vocals on The Nylon Curtain sound like John Lennon. (Laura, Scandinavian Skys, Goodnight Saigon). Billy said that it was unintentional, but at the time he was thinking a lot about Lennon and his genius.
He had to know "Laura" was "Lennon-esque" though...that had to be intentional, and it's one of my favorites.
We REALLY need a remastered release of the full concert!
I had this concert on VHS years ago, when it came out. But this song wasn't on it. I wonder how much of this concert has been left in the can
What a song,what a Band..what a great artiste...truly fabulous performance,
It doesn't get better....so many years later and still fantastic......now you know what REAL music was like!!!!
Saw him at Wembley, 2019. Bucket list event ticked off especially when he sang Scenes from an Italian Restaurant. What a night! Only regret was he didn’t perform this, because Until the Night is such a complete and remarkable song in so many ways.
The look of recognition and relief at the end....Joel just knows it just fucking brilliant..what a song..what a performance..what a great band he had then....kills me every time...takes me back many years when first married 40 years ago..I got to moonlighting..decorating on the side..midnight and early hours stuff..I had this shitty little cassette player,a friend of mine lended me 52nd Street and Glass Houses...played them to death thru the long night...great memories..
After all these years, STILL one of his best! The bridge, the drums, the sax, why is this not on one of his “All time best” albums??
I only heard this year or two ago now one of my favorites along with Good Night Saigon .❤
I danced to this as my first dance at our wedding. 40 years ago. It still makes me want to be with my husband. Great words, great sentiment.
I remember loving this song when I was 17 and had no real comprehension of the situation. I loved the imagery and the feelings that it conjured up. I recently bought 52nd Street from ITunes and listening to this song takes me back to the late 90’s when me and my wife at that time struggled to survive with two kids and somehow fit us in between all the work and obligations. Getting home at night and lying in bed talking with her was the only thing that kept me going.
Sweet Jesus, his band was tight as fuck back then...amazing performance, one of my favorite songs by him..god, I love me sone Billy Joel!
i believe the correct term is: His band was "tighter than a bugs ass" back then. amazing performance no doubt.
upstatenyphann this band of that era,was an example of musicianship and musical behaviour ,they were all for one and one for all !(never seen them live, though, born in greece,in 1990 :l)
I once described a friend's a capella version of "Zanzibar" as "So tight, it should be illegal." I knew what I was saying (To sound like that, you must be breaking some laws somewhere), but everyone took it the extremely dirty way.
Nevertheless, this performance is so tight, it should be illegal.
This is just another level of performance, the whole band in sync and just by listening you can tell everybody is feeling the song, playing from the heart!
Simply his best song and a superb live version. All that was missing were the French horns and strings. Not a huge Joel fan as such but this number and She's Always a Woman are two of my all-time favourite songs. An extreme talent.
based on what you like you probably would be a fan if you listened to more of his stuff.
大好きな曲なので聴けてよかったです!ありがとうございます。
Violin part leading to the crescendo is missed sorely but what beautiful lovely performance always my favourite song 👍
Everyone in that band was outstanding! There never was a dropoff I'd experience between album and live performance.Joel and his band were electrifying.
Awesome!
They need to remaster this concert and release it It's that good!
If RUclips was around in the 80's, songs like this incredible classic along with the other literally thousands of great songs would have 50,000,0000 hits for every great song whether Rock, Pop or Classic Disco. 80's did rule.
But hey, those who lived the 80's know there hasn't been music out there like this for decades. And probably never will be again.
So UNDERRATED...He did this in Philly..I went CRAZY! Very happy he dips in to the deep tracks
Yep
Just beautiful
I wore this album out in my room in the 1970s. Just magnificent songs.
Billy...please please please bury the hatchet and bring Liberty and the boys back.
STEVIE AND BILLY JOEL ARE THE 2 WONDERS THE WORLD EVER HAVE
ANOTHER GREAT SONG, I LOVE THE BALLADS CAUSE I CAN UNDERSTAND THE LYRICS! DUETS ARE GREAT!
Amazing song. Handsome Billy Bjoel
I forgot how much I loved and appreciated this beautiful song. Terrific how Billy dedicated it to the Righteous Brothers. I would so loved to have been there at Nassau for this.
Bill Medley recorded it himself on an album a couple of years after Billy had done so on his 52nd Street album.
If only Billy knew he was going to later record the An Innocent Man album, he might have held it back for that one instead.
+amazed66 thanks for the info-i have to get the medley version for sure! Thx again
Best Billy Joel song
I love this song. That’82 concert in LI was amazing.
Okay, isn't it about time they did something with Billy's best (by far) officially released concert video "Live From L.I." ......and start by including the complete show with the release. LFLI never even got a DVD release!!!! Release it as a bluray, release it as part of a Legacy edition of The Nylon Curtain, anything just get this performance out there. It should have been the "vintage" show that was to be included in the My Lives boxset, instead we got that tired performance from the ROD tour. WTF?!? Release LFLI!!!
Yes yes yes and YESSSSSS!!!!! Every now and then I see more clips pop up from that show/tour that aren't on the VHS tape. I want the rest!
I agree but I was at that "tired" performance on the ROD tour, in Frankfurt in 1994. That was gold dust for me. A fantastic concert I will never forget. Don't diss that unless you were there and didn't like it.
may be his best most consistent album. really on top of his game here. still have the vinyl from the Columbia record and tape club circa 1979
My Favourite. Love the sax solo too.🇦🇺
My favourite Billy song and always be in my all time top ten
Aughhhh...best Billy Joel song, ever!
