Lyrics:
I never ask you where you go
After I leave you in the morning
We go our different ways to separate situations
It's not that easy anymore
Today I do what must be done
I give my time to total strangers
But now it feels as though the the day goes on forever
More than it ever did before
Until the night, until the night
I just might make it
Until the night, until the night
When I see you again
Billy Joel's official RUclips channel features music videos, live performances, interviews, TV appearances and more. Best known for his first hit song, 'Piano Man', in 1973, Billy has written and recorded thirty- three Top 40 hits in the United States. He is a six-time Grammy Award winner, a 23-time Grammy nominee and one of the world's best-selling artists of all time, having sold over 150 million records worldwide. Billy Joel is the sixth-best-selling recording artist and the third-best-selling solo artist in the United States.
This song is a masterpiece and one of my favorites. This is a overlooked and underrated Jewel.
Agree, it is amazing.
Couldn’t agree more
It is actually a tribute to The Righteous Brothers.
I heard on him say on his sirus radio station show, "What was I thinking", when he stated he was inspired by the Righteous Brothers in writing this, especially "You've lost that loving feeling". Mr. Joel was trying to get that "big sound" and to "borrow" the style of both voices of Bill Medley and Bucky Heard.
Plus, "Don't get me wrong, I never steal, I borrow; I am a songwriter, not really a singer".
I agree the orchestration is gorgeous and so are the lyrics.
On that note:~
"Until The Night"
I never ask you where you go
After I leave you in the morning
We go our different ways to separate situations
It's not that easy anymore
Today I do what must be done
I give my time to total strangers
But now it feels as though the the day goes on forever
More than it ever did before
Until the night, until the night
I just might make it
Until the night, until the night
When I see you again
Now you're afraid that we have changed
And I'm afraid we're getting older
So many broken hearts, so many lonely faces
So many lovers come and gone
I'll have my fears like every man
You'll have you tears like every woman
Today we'll be unsure, is this what we believe in
And wonder how can we go wrong
Until the night, until the night
I just might make it
Until the night, until the night
When I see you again
When the sun goes down
And the day is over
When the last of the light has gone
As they pour into the street
I will be getting closer
As the cars turn their headlights on
As they're closing it down
I'm gonna open it up
And while they're going to sleep
We'll just be starting to touch
I'm just beginning to feel
I'm just beginning to give
I'm just beginning to feel
I'm just beginning to live
Before I leave you again
Before the light of dawn
Before this evening can end
I have been waiting so long
Until the night, until the night
I just might make it
Until the night, until the night
I'll just keep holding on
Until the night, until the night
When I see you again
Absolutely MASTER of master is the fellow Joel
I was working at CBS Records when this album came out. We’d play all the new ones in the office, and when we heard this song, we all said-he sounds like the Righteous Brothers. This is and will always be my favorite Billy Joel song. Getting to meet him when he came to Dallas was one of the best things I ever experienced.
My brother sings this...lower tone ... magic
Fortunate story. 🎶❤
GOOD TO HEAR. THANKS FOR SHARING.
My father and I shared Billy Joel as I grew up - born in '92. This song hits me so hard, we played it at my father's funeral last week. I've been listening to it on repeat and I cry every damn time.
Scott Hill May your father rest ...
I heard the song on the radio recently for the first time in a long time - I have been singing it to my son in the mornings. He doesn't even know it's a song ..
😢😢❤️❤️
Scott Hill he’ll always be with you, until you meet again, RIP
Remember your father positively, Scott. Sounds as if he enriched your upbringing.
The ‘unheard’ masterpiece. The best kept secret, where the modern and the classical and the ancient and the modern come together in one song, one anthem, one aria……a choral soulful heartfelt heavensent musical miracle. Thank you Billy, ‘ I’m just beginning to feel, I’m just beginning to live ‘. I have been singing with you for my whole adult life and smiling with pure joy…. A Joel Jewel
totally agree
VERY WELL PUT
The best Righteous Brothers song the Righteous Brothers never made.
The Righteous Brothers never wrote any songs.
You are right, my friend,.
@@manco828 Brilliant tribute to the Righteous brothers. You can almost hear youve lost that lovin feeling, right on top of it. !
The first Billy Joel album I owned was 52nd Street in 1978 (I was 13 years old) My grandma bought it for me at a Woolworth's department store basement. Then we had lunch at the snack bar. THANK YOU Grandma for always treating me better than I ever deserved. I still think of you everyday and love you. Anyway, I always thought that THIS was the best song on the album.
An uncle of a buddy of mine bought it for my birthday, I was your age and loved my grandma and our music, but my buddies uncle came through for me with this gift, and I loved every song, but this one was more like a vocal event! pure beauty!
Aw! Grandma's always knew how to make everything special for us as kids. I am who I am because of mine. Miss her every day, as well.
Grandma’s are the best!
Loved Woolworth’s!
@@JohnSparkmanandBlackTopHerd Virtually all popular music is about love affairs, new, or broken. BUT NONE, have ever been so descriptive ; going into so much imotional detail, by describing their day to day story, and their background to the break-up. I'm so glad, that the producer ,didn't surcombe to clock watching, and shorten it.
chills go down my spine every time it goes to that bridge 4:05 -5:05 then the sax !!!!!
I love how it builds at that point.
The sax on the studio version by Richie Cannata is so much better than Marc Rivera (Sorry Marc) Goose bumps!
that sax is pure magic
And his scream! Goosebumps
YES!!!!
Billy Joel is a genius in many ways. This is his Righteous Brothers tribute and one of many gems he has written.
A hidden gem that got almost no airplay. I was 10 yo when the album was released. His ability to change his voice in the song shows how much of a musical genius he is
Billy Joel has always been savaged by the critics, and it makes me sad, and bewildered. I even am pretty burned out on him in recent years. Sure, there are lots of hits that leaned on the bouncy, commercial side. Some that, at this point, I can't listen to anymore. But, his deep cuts are the ones that rarely get airplay, and frankly, some of his best, musically, lyrically, and technically. Prelude To An Angry Young Man is stellar. It shows off his instrumental brilliance in a nutshell. Like him or not, one must admit, he's a helluva piano man.
@@katydalton4759 Even his "bouncy" commercial stuff is quite good. Any musician can hear the brilliant chord progressions even in a song like in Uptown Girl. Modulations abundant.
Thanks for recognising that! His critics slay him for his commercial output. That's what I meant by "bouncy".
His musicianship is incredible.
An absolutely perfect Righteous Brothers tribute
Absolutely my favorite Billy Joel song❤
Mine too
The best.
One of Billy Joel's best! This is a masterpiece, and is undoubtedly one of those underrated songs and hidden jewels that deserves its claim to fame. Thank you, Billy, This is a beautiful tune from the late 1970's that is perfect for any genre.
Right with you, Rebecca! My favorite song of his!
Yes! My very favorite!
So underrated....
Maybe the most beautiful songs ever done by Joel, and I never heard it once on the airways.
An absolute shame this masterpiece never got the airplay; the recognition for excellence it so deserved (and deserves still).
Too long for radio back then
@@scottmarsh7932 THE ONLY POSSIBLE REASON--BUT NOT, AN ACCEPTABLE EXCUSE. BUT THAT'S COMMERCIAL STATIONS FOR YOU--WHAT ? 6 MINUTES WITHOUT A ADVERT ???
He had so many great singles during this era that it is easy to overlook at how great the other album tracks were. He made complete records, no filler, all killer.
+Jeff Lindstrom Definitely_ Stiletto, Rosalinda's Eyes and this song were B side Gems of my lifetime!
Jeff Lindstrom luv Billy Joel hits! The "b" sides are better !!
on 52nd street the singles were actually not the best songs on the record.
Jeff Lindstrom i agree.. All killer no filler! Best phrase of the day! Maybe 2017!!
James Falkner it’s a reference from sum 41’s greatest hits album
I can´t get tired of this song, its just brilliant
If your avatar is an image of you, una bella donna.
It's my favourite too, and that saxophone is breathtaking.
One of the best things about Billy Joel...the passion that comes out in his lyrics.I could listen to this song over and over.
I did just listen to this song over and over.
Maybe his masterpiece. So underrated.
52 street was one of the best albums of that time
And probably the best he ever recorded in my opinion
Just cannot get enough of this song! Not only does it remind me of the yearnings of my youth, but also the endless ache of such strong physical attraction... aaaahhhhhh! A pure masterpiece Billy!
Well said
Absolutely!!!! It will always be my favorite from Billy Joel. The lyrics touch deep - so deep !!!!
Even though I owned the album, if this song came on the radio, I would stop whatever I was doing and listen/sing along. Really gets to your soul.
I never heard it on the radio.
@@sha11235it was never released as a single in the US, so if it was ever on the radio it was very rarely.
this song is a work of art
Guess every song is. Doesnt matter what you personally think about it. For the artist his song is a piece of art.
Absolutely
one of the best songs ever that few people know
I agree.
YOU, have very very good taste in music.
I've been listening to it since that album was released, thinking this exact same thing. Emotionally deep, this song just attaches to the soul of the person listening to it.
I know this song, i'm italian and bought this records in england in 1978 or 1979.
The few and the proud.
Such an underrated song that truly shows Billy's amazing vocal ability!
My girl died 2 years ago. Billy and Elton comforted me. God bless you both.
MAY SHE R.I.P.
If this is not one of the greatest romantic ballads ever written ...
I have heard this song 100 times, easily. It still strikes me as one of them most beautiful and meaningful things I've ever heard.
YEAH ? WHERE ?
One of my very favorite Billy Joel tunes. Just gets me every single time.
If Billy Joel ever created an anthem, this is it. It's a genuine masterpiece.
A TOTAL mystery to me, why this superb song/recording, is SO neglected. This is a mini masterpiece, a marvelous reflection on modern relationships, and could have fitted into many modern stage musicals so well, as a show stopper. In the last 10 years, there have been several compilation C.Ds of Billy's musical 'Best of ' /' Greatest hits' etc, but NONE of them included this outstanding track. SO frustrating. What was his record company thinking of, or were they thinking at all?
Totally agreed ! Strongly reminiscent of "You've lost that loving feeling" .
This is not a rock song. It's a soul song from the 50s. He's imitating the material The Righteous Brothers did. Actually, it doesn't fit his voice very well. I'd love to hear somebody cover it who has the chops to really belt it out. It's a great song, and I've always loved it. But it's out of the mainstream of his material.
Philip Croft It was a beautiful song, But it ran too long, If you're gonna have a hit, You gotta make it fit.
+amazed66 I DON'T AGREE WITH THE POINT YOU ARE MAKING. THE 3 MINUTE 'POP' SINGLE DISAPPEARED A DECADE BEFORE THIS . I COULD MENTION SEVERAL HUGE SINGLE HITS LASTING 5-6 MINUTES BEFORE THIS ONE, WHICH MADE NUMBER ONE'S TOO.
Philip Croft I was quoting Billy's line from his song The Entertainer:
I am the entertainer
I come to do my show
You've heard my latest record
It's been on the radio
Ah, it took me years to write it
They were the best years of my life
It was a beautiful song
But it ran too long
If you're gonna have a hit
You gotta make it fit
So they cut it down to 3:05
I think this is the best track on the album, it's the reason I bought it..
Donna Rawiri
congratulations is wonderful
This song is superb
I'm more of a Zanzibar man... but this song is also amazing
Donna, had you heard this song already when you picked up your copy of the LP?
You don't get any better than this.
Best track on the album in my opinion
I totally agree.

Love this, a masterpiece. Fav. Billy Joel song, so beautifully arranged and performed.
Can't ever get enough of this one. Billy at his absolute best. Love it.
I saw BJ do this live at Littlejohn Coliseum in early 79 on the 52ed Street tour. At the end of the song, the crowd was stunned by the performance. It was momentarily quiet, then the crowd rose and gave a long ovation. Incredible.

A terrific tip of the hat, for real.
Beautiful, brilliant song......absolutely love it........story of my life. :-(
My favourite Billy song. Wonderful vocals.
I'm right there with ya'.
Until The Night by Billy Joel is a master piece of music.
It is by far my favourite song of his.
Talk about flexible. The man can do any genre. i had this album when it came out (I was fourteen) It was my musical coming of age. Phenomenal album.

Me too- it was such a tender time and he soothed my soul with this song. Wow. 14years old.......
Played this song every time I went off to work in the morning
Memories of my friend Dave who sang the heck outta this song ..........goodnight god bless mate
a very underplayed and under appreciated Billy Joel greats !!
Bought this when it first came out, and it still takes me back to that time. It was one contemporary lp my father and I listened and enjoyed. This song always stood out for me.
Lyrics are so profound about love:
I'm just beginning to feel
I'm just beginning to give
I'm just beginning to feel
I'm just beginning to live
The thing that makes a great song a masterpiece is the nuances: Less is more! All great masterpieces have multiple parts (movements/scenes). This song has numerous scenes from a extremely basic start to a great crescendo!!!! Also the drummer is one of the best ever - just the right touches at just the right moment!
Also combined with a really good story about the struggles of being married while on tour.
Liberty DeVito was the energy behind that band. If you watch him in videos you can't help it be super impressed with him.!
the build up starting from 4:36 is my favorite part, its so beautiful, i seriously cant get enough of it
I have always loved this song. The lyrics are filled with such longing and anticipation, and the music is so soulful. An album gem!
This song is so haunting. I heard it many years while driving on the back roads in Victoria, Australia and it took me years to work, out who sang it.
Billy Joel was always so good at writing love songs, because he looks at love from an unsentimental, unidealized perspective, but one that’s no less beautiful. Billy’s music taught me that even if love can never be perfect, it’s still absolutely what makes life worth living.
Last sentence, well said! I love it!!
I dare you to try listening to those brilliant backing vocals. I'm at this very moment busy with a cover of the song and it's outstanding, I can't even replicate them in any way whatsoever. Marvelous.
i will be glad to do the backing vocals for you. Just say where and when.
So many times, unfortunately, people are only listening to the main part of the song and then when they hear the background vocals, these realize what else helps make the song great.......Like that single bell sound at the end of the song.
Russell Javors on back up vocals..... Fantastic.
@@mcdermottlaw Russell only did the backing vocals live, but not on the album recording. He wasn't in the band yet when 52nd St was recorded, but he joined shortly afterwards since he's on Songs in the Attic and Glass Houses. But you can see/hear Russell singing Until The Night on the Live From Long Island concert which was December '82. The song was cut from the HBO special and the VHS release of that concert back in the day, but it's on RUclips and is spectacular! Russell is freakin' awesome, and I was totally in love with him as a teenager. :)
On the album recording, Billy is singing with himself on two separate tracks for a lot of the song, but I read somewhere that some of the lines are actually sung by a woman: an uncredited Phoebe Snow. I remember reading that Phil Ramone (Billy's producer) was working with Phoebe on her own albums, and in fact, some of Billy's band members played as session musicians on her records, thanks to Phil. I should mention that I haven't been able to find any corroboration of that story anywhere, but I'm sure I read it in a book I was given about Billy in the 80s. I wish I could remember the name of the book or what I did with it. Anyway, take the Phoebe Snow thing with a grain of salt... but the Russell bit is totally true. :-)
The song was also gifted with Phil Ramone at the desk. It could have been the way he had it dialed in, or overlapped it like Phil SPector did.. a wall of sound kind of thing. THis song was Joels answer to The Rightous brothers .. loving feeling.. Thus the wall of sound .. No less that 30 players in the string section alone. Simply perfection. You could also try using a fairlight CMI to emulate those BG Vocals. Perhaps thats why they used to replicate the sound of the original tune Would love to hear some of your work sometime man
Came out when I was 14 and SO in love. Listened a million times, sang harmony to Mr. Joel without him having a thought. Still love it, and always will.
Billy Joel is just pure magic.👌

What a song~
WOW! I've loved this song since I first heard it in the seventies!
Why it wasn't a huge hit stumps me. This is one of MANY, MANY of Billy's great songs!!!!!
Will always remind me of a special love I once had. I would drive hours to just be with her. It didn't last long but it burned white hot. 40 years later I still remember her. This epic song seems to have been written just for us. Thank you Billy!

Because he never released it, as a single.
Whenever I hear this I am back in the moment! My favorite of all Billy’s songs. The lyrics, the music, that sax!
@Billy Joel for every “hit” you have, you’ve got at least 5 other songs that IMO are at least as good if not even better and more amazing…this is one of those under the radar songs.
This song take me back to my angst filled teen years wailing along with those harmonies....... The neighbors had to have heard as Billy and I sang to the climatic end "when I see you again" aaaaaah sweet memories!

The B Side of the 52nd Street LP was incredible. Until the Night, Rosalinda's Eyes, Half a mile Away, Stilleto, all great songs
This has been my favorite song on this album since I was little! Such a wonderful example of real love and finding comfort in a person and just being with them

I looked for the album 52nd Street for years (As it was the only way to get this track at the time). I eventually found it. It's pure class. The best track that Billy Joel's ever had, in my opinion. It reminds me of all sorts of people and things that can never be replaced.

Pandoran Age Chronicles by Dante D'Anthony absolutely the deepest part of the song. I remember vividly imagining this scene, so perfectly choreographed, hordes of people coming out from work in every level of work clothes to flood the streets, and the twilight fades and every car in the streets turns the headlights on. not sequentiality, but randomly, and all in the few seconds it takes for him to sing the line... purely amazing feeling. and I've never been to New York.

Best song ever written!!!
This could easily be on a WAR album - with all of the instruments, steady beat, and urban vibe. Just outstanding.
As for me, this is my favourite artist and my favourite song. There are so many things inside these near seven minutes of poetry and music... Going one step beyond, I am not sure if composers are really aware of the feelings they may bring to their public. Cheers to everybody from Malaysia, my temporary home.
A masterpiece that gets overlooked for some reason. Song gives me chills.
