  • Great horned and barred owl babies video montage shows owlets up close from four nests in St. Petersburg, Florida and at Circle B Bar Reserve in Lakeland, Florida. I watched two great horned owl nests (one with two owlets, one with one owlet) and two barred owl nests (both with two owlets). The video montage shows great horned owl babies and barred owl babies preening, yawning, sleeping, and stretching. In all cases, babies had not yet fledged, but were old enough to be left alone by parents in their nests. Very likely mothers were all close by camouflaged in nearby branches. Owlets with siblings played, preened each other and themselves, then shared food left by parents in nest. It was very amusing watching their interactions. Owlet without siblings needed to amuse itself...watching me watching it, while playing with sticks and bark until parent's return with food. In all cases owlets ended up successfully branching and fledging. Now, owlets will learn to hunt down food with parent assistance for up to 6 months.

I'm glad to hear that all the owl babies made it out of the nest. Now they have to find their own food. Life is rough. Those little fellas that lived on top of the palm tree with no shade, no shelter, no protection, were raised to be Spartans! I wish all the babies the best. Thank you for giving us another look at the sweet babies! ♥️🦉♥️

So good to hear from you again - missed your thoughtful commentary. It was my pleasure to share more footage of these amazing owlets! I’m glad you enjoyed seeing them. 😁 I think they’re still hanging around their parents’ territory honing their hunting skills, but we’re getting closer to the time when they’ll find their own way and perhaps search out a new territory. Have a great day! 😁
