River Otters Scent Mark Territory and Escape in Tunnels
River otters scent mark territory and escape in tunnels at Lake Hollingsworth in Lakeland, Florida. Scattering after seeing me, river otters chirp and grunt loudly as they try to locate each other and move on to safety in their network of tunnels and culverts. River Otters "scent mark" to identify their territory and communicate their reproductive/social status, as well as individual/species identity to other otters. They achieve this by rubbing their bodies covered with sweat glands into the ground leaving behind feces or anal jelly (combination of undigested food, anal secretions, and intestinal lining). I noticed that they scent marked near the entrance of the tunnel they escaped into ...

Limpkin Chicks Always Underfoot and Begging for Food

Limpkin chicks always underfoot and begging for food at Lake Hollingsworth in Lakeland, Florida. Sometimes the four chicks get stepped on or knocked down, but that never stops them. They compete for food and maintain a pecking order simply based on the strongest and most aggressive chick eating until it's no longer hungry, then the next chick takes over, and so on. Both parents help with the ne...

Limpkin chicks fight each other for food at Lake Hollingsworth in Lakeland, Florida. It's a matter of instinct and survival as two parents try to keep up with four hungry chicks. I'm trying not to laugh but that's the funniest video yet. Mom and dad stepping on the tiny babies squishing them into the mud, but they pop back up! The chicks are tough little guys. I had to chuckle too once I knew the chicks were okay, of course! 😁 It's amazing their ability to "bounce" back, but as I've learned they are very flexible as small chicks. Also, the parents each weigh no more than 3 lbs and they were stepping on them in the water so there was some give as they were pushed down. I'm watching lakeside, not in a boat. Fortunately, the wading birds like to stay reasonably close to land, especially when they have little ones. Thanks again for watching - so glad you enjoyed it! Happy weekend! 😁

Not an easy life for wildlife, but there are those moments when you catch them in their "happy places" like when a raccoon mama roughhouses with her kits in the marsh, or when otters scratch each other's itches, or when green heron chicks make their first flight and leave the confines of their nest. I believe there's joy to be found for every living being. 🥰 I'm glad you like the video quality - I use a Panasonic Lumix FZ300. A huge one would visit my mom's place all winter long. I don't know if it was a male or female. Mom put seed and suet out for the birds and the big Pileated woodpecker would demolish the suet and take huge chunks of wood out of her post. Oh my goodness those are the sweetest little babies! They are precious. Mom and dad are wonderful loving parents. That purple gallinut is mean, to her own babies and everyone else's babies too it looks like! The ducks eat plants and the purple gallinut eats bugs so I guess the purple gallinut is a predator. I know ducks love water, but to watch the babies bed down for the night under mom's wings lying in the water, makes me kind of cringe. I wonder why the dad flew off and left them alone for the night. I wonder if he came back? This lake really is a beautiful place, a safe haven for the wildlife. They are such sweet little ducklings - I'm glad you enjoyed watching them! I wasn't surprised to see the purple gallinule get aggressive with them, but didn't think it would try to peck a baby. It was being protective of its own chicks that were expressing their distress as the black-bellied whistling duck family worked its way into their nesting territory. Thankfully, the baby ducked when the purple gallinule came after it. I'm not sure why one whistler parent left the family, but I'm guessing they take turns watching over the little ones. Possibly it needed to take flight and work those wings, feed, or get a respite, just like herons and other wading birds. I've seen other whistling duck families do the same. Hopefully, the ducklings won't get too waterlogged under parent's wings on the soggy patch of grass. I'm guessing if it became a problem they'd move to land. Thanks again for your thoughts and interest! Have a great day! 😁

@@wildthunderbird absolutely! I want to share what wildlife is really like, so it's important that I stay in the background and appear as non-threatening as possible. Yes, my zoom makes that possible - grateful for that!

I really liked this one. BIG thumbs up! I know your secret. DO LITTLE and the animals don't seem to mind you being close. They looked right at the camera several times and didn't seem to mind at all.

Thanks Roger! Yes, I think the key is to be as non-threatening as possible and for the wildlife to "almost" forget you're there. 😉 Have a great day!

What a darling family! Those sweet little faces. It's so nice to see a great mom, that fish was as big as her. They were really watching you, maybe wondering if you had any treats. Thank you for spending the day with the racoon family and getting lots of great shots. Another very enjoyable video! Have a wonderful weekend 🐾🐾🐾🐾😊

Thank you so much! I couldn't stop smiling...they are so cute together and remind me more of puppies than kittens (especially when one kit was playing "keep away" with stick). I'm so grateful I was there to capture this footage and that the family put up with me! 🥰 Have a great weekend as well!

While filming, you must have been sitting still for hours in the swamp. Don't you become a victim of those monstrous giant mosquitoes «gallinipper» ( Psorophora ciliata) which, as I know, inhabit Florida?

I did spend hours watching this common gallinule family. I wear high socks and fortunately don’t get bothered much by mosquitos. However, red ants are another story. I brushed up against some vegetation on the edge of a trail to film a gator eating fish in the lake the other day and didn’t realize I was stepping in a red ant hill…ughh. I was itching for a few days afterward and have the sores remaining a week later. One time I was bitten by chiggers and the marks on my legs lasted a few weeks - very uncomfortable!
