  • Limpkin chicks fight each other for food at Lake Hollingsworth in Lakeland, Florida. It's a matter of instinct and survival as two parents try to keep up with four hungry chicks. The strongest of the chicks will intimidate the others and shadow parent as he/she spears the marshy waters to find food, preferably apple snails. Parents try to share among the four, but while they are cracking the shells and prying the snails out, aggressive chick(s) are "staking their claim!" This fight for food helps strengthen the young that survive and ready themselves to be on their own.

Early 2019, we bought a small place on the west side of Lake Eustis, and a few weeks later we saw a solitary Limpkin visiting our residential canal. The wife and I enjoyed watching it search for food. It's movements and vocals were quite comical as it probed the mud searching for Apple snails (primary food source). We silently giggled so we wouldn't disturb this fascinating bird. It was only here for 4 days - we determined that it had depleted the food source and moved on. It even found 2 baseball sized apple snails in our turf/grass near the canal. We're retired and every day we sit in our screened porch to observe a variety of wildlife that frequents our yard and canal. The Limpkin hasn't returned!
*Thank You for sharing your video footage of one of my favorite lakeside birds!* ❤

I'm so glad you and your wife are enjoying the wildlife in your area. Limpkins are amazing - like you said, they don't even damage the shells when pulling out the snails. My husband and I visited Lake Eustis a couple years ago and enjoyed the Lake Walk. I watched a family of purple gallinules close up. It was a wonderful day!

Life's rough in the wild! No one said it was going to be easy. The first bossy chick better be careful he or she doesn't choke. Their little wings are cute. The mom and dad have their hands full. You must have a really good cameras because your videos are always very high-quality. Every weekend it's a joy to see who is going to be in the spotlight! We never know. I hope all the little chicks get to live a happy life. Thank you for the sweet video and I hope you are having a fun weekend! 😊🐥🐥🐥🐥😊

You got that right! Not an easy life for wildlife, but there are those moments when you catch them in their "happy places" like when a raccoon mama roughhouses with her kits in the marsh, or when otters scratch each other's itches, or when green heron chicks make their first flight and leave the confines of their nest. I believe there's joy to be found for every living being. 🥰 I'm glad you like the video quality - I use a Panasonic Lumix FZ300. Bought it for its video capabilities, but enjoy using it for wildlife photos as well. I will keep trying to surprise you every week! 😁 Thanks again for sharing your thoughts and have a great weekend!

@@MichelleSiefkenPhotography you're welcome! Wild animals don't seem to worry and fret, I think. They live in the moment, and they don't feel sorry for themselves, they do what they need to do when they need to do it. Here I sound like a big expert but by watching wild animals, I think it's true. I always enjoy your videos! 😊📸

@@wildthunderbirdI agree completely! I think that’s what so many of us enjoy about nature. However harsh it may be, we can see the natural order of things and how it all makes sense. I’m so glad you keep enjoying my videos! I’ll keep trying to find more to share! 😁
