It took about 2 weekends, 4 days: Day 1: Cut everything sand a seal (leave over night to dry) Day 2: Glues everything (leave night to cure) Day 3: First coat of Paint (leave over night to dry) Day 4 Second coat of paint (leave over night to dry)
Great work! You have really opened up this project for a lot more people. I have one question. When you shortened the length to 8 ft, did you change the length of the cockpit? Most plans have it as 48 " long. Your boats seem to be the perfect dimensions, but it's hard to tell the length of the opening.
3-5 day?!? Well as long as there is NO white water with should be fine BUT it is very small. Not a lot of room for supplies. I would definitely recommend finding 10 foot plywood like the original plans call for. If you do it please let me know how it went.
Would this still float for someone who is 210lbs?? I was also wondering if you thought it would be doable to substitute coroplast in place of the top 2 pieces of plywood. I was thinking of doubling coroplast sheets for the top so they are more structurally sound. The plywood spreaders would help with the rigidity too. Just brainstorming out loud :)
I used 10 oz duck-cloth from my local fabric store. I think canvas drop clothes would be too thick. With the 4 I have made and used for three year now) the canvas has never failed. Good luck,.
Best home made kayak I’ve seen cheers 👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks for sharing your tips on this great project!
Thank you. Heading up to Big Bear in three weeks to get my kayaks cleaned, registered, and ready for another season.
Phil, Nice work on these, we are building these with our scout troop. building 4 at one time.

I got it from a local Fabric Store. Is just standard 8 oz canvas or duck cloth.
YES! In Big Bear lake they actually charge me $45 per Kayak per year. Total sucks to have to layout $180 to take all 4 out the first time.

I live in a metric country. What does 1/4 x 11-7/8 x 120 (Plywood) mean?
From start to finish how long did it take to make?
were is you get the canvas
thank you
Very stable of a lake. I would probably not take them out of the ocean. Th
Do the dimensions of anything else need to change in order to make it 8 ft long?
Nope
How about an approximate weight limit?
How much to make??? Less then $100.
