Thank you Father, I want to make good confessions. I want to learn. I believe in God's mercy and the deeper I go into my faith, the more I realize how dreadful a sinner I am and how much I offend Our Lord. I'm crushed because the thought of hurting Our Lord is so painful to me. I'm 61 and still learning so much . My cathechesis was just about non existent and in the past ten years my life has changed and I finally opened my heart to Christ. What a blessing. I was finally confirmed this year! Please, please keep making these podcasts, they are so helpful and beautiful. Thank you Lord.

Perfect contrition is in my opinion a rare grace especially when charity is not yet very profound. According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church, atrition, or imperfect contrition, will suffice as long as confession is done sacramentally:
Paragraph # 1453. 1453
“The contrition called "imperfect" (or "attrition") is also a gift of God, a prompting of the Holy Spirit. It is born of the consideration of sin's ugliness or the fear of eternal damnation and the other penalties threatening the sinner (contrition of fear). Such a stirring of conscience can initiate an interior process which, under the prompting of grace, will be brought to completion by sacramental absolution. By itself however, imperfect contrition cannot obtain the forgiveness of grave sins, but it disposes one to obtain forgiveness in the sacrament of Penance.”
Unless you complete 5 tasks needed to be valid confession, that is as per Canon Law or Catechism. Else, even if there is even minute defect, the confession does not become valid. Absolution is given, that is only one of the 5 acts. Where are 4 others.
Is not confession/reconciliation already a sacrament? How would it be different if not done sacramentally?

Non sacramental confession would be confessing sins to a fellow laity/non clergy, i think.
@@_Breakdown 1. Examination of conscience for the sins. 2. Remorse, True Repentance for sins and Resolve not to commit. 3 Confession to the Priest and Absolution 4. Contrition, Penance and Determination 5. To make reparation for the sins, if anyway possible.
These are listed in the Canon Law.
Remember why St Padre Pio drove out penitents from the confessional, although there was line from morning till late evening.

What if we are not sure if something is a sin and confess it, are we truly sorry and contrite if we are unsure if it is wrong? Is the whole confession invalid?
So does anyone know the Act of Contrition ( the good and traditional one ) he speaks of at 13:00?

So, if I have committed a mortal sin, then get in a horrible accident, or some other life ending event before I had been able to get to confession, if I can say the act of contrition, or another person , not necessarily a priest says it for me, my eternal soul will be safe? I am unsure after listening to this. Thx for any clarification.
That’s why you don’t commit the mortal sin - the next moment is promised to no one.
We need perfect contrition, which is extremely hard. We need to strive to do this regularly. Let's not disappoint our heavenly Father.
This is why in the past, when people were more serious about their spiritual life, theirs prayer was to not die without seeing a priest.
My understanding is that if you die without the sacraments in a situation like that you would need to have perfect contrition.
Look, keep in mind Jesus wants to save us all. He really does. If you're honest about regretting what you did and sincerely hope to find the strength, and pray for it, pray, pray, pray...not to do it again: as Padre Pio said "Pray, hope and don't worry". Contrition is basically to be more regretful for having offended God than fearful of the punishment attached to the committed sin. Also, perfect contrition is required only out of Confession. In confession the mere fear of punishment and the resolution not to repeat the sin is enough. Pax Christi
So if in the past a person has rattled off venial sins that he wasn’t sorry for sufficiently that alone isn’t enough to invalidate a confession right?

so much for addicts then. after all their addiction might be stronger than their will and thus they cannot show enough true contrition.
If their contrition is true when they confess and they truly intend not to repeat then it is absolved. That does not mean it was necessarily perfect contrition but the imperfect was enough to be absolved in the sacrament.

If the will is weak through addiction then they cannot commit a mortal sin in the first place
How was the father safe for eternity? He hadn't been absolved of his sin as previously was stated in this video to be required.

I believe the priest is saying the father was able to make an act of PERFECT contrition and thus was saved. Perfect contrition is difficult to attain and you still don't have the total assurance of knowing your sin is forgiven like you would if you'd received absolution through the sacrament of penance.
This sermon doesn't sound very charitable. The priest speaking it sounds haughty and arrogant, quite like the pharisee in Luke 18:9:
To some who were confident of their own righteousness and looked down on everyone else, Jesus told this parable: (10) “Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. ...
We don't need to be charitable toward sin. He sounds fine, perhaps you're just soft?
What is not charitable about it? Maybe it's just your perception based on how he sounds that reminds you of someone in your life that was arrogant. But be careful of you judging someone you don't even know. That might be an area for you to confess.

Charity is more important than righteousness, better meditate that. Or, perhaps, you don't understand the difference between charity and permissiveness. If I were a priest, I would certainly explain contrition, but to every person coming to confess, in order for my explanations to bear fruit. This guy, yeah... maybe he doesn't like to hear confessions too much. So tell all in advance: better come when you're really ready or else, go to hell.

@@KMF3 yeah, he does remind me of the sermons of a Sedevacantist priest, whom I was following before realizing what a wicked heresy Sedevacantism is (thank you, John Salza): his sermons were all about pride in righteousness, liberals here, modernists there... yep, that sort of tone does give away the holier-than-thou pharisees
