Start at 6:39 he really shows you exactly what you need to see. Thanks Buckin Billy ! After about 20 other confusing videos, you're the only one to show me exactly what i need to see , to understand what's going on.
Thank you buckin', finally the file angle shown!! Awesome video, i'm a hand filer and wanted to try square filing but couldn't find a video that started with file position! I'm going looking for a file tomorrow! Thanks for sharing your fantastic knowledge!
So to tell how long I have been working a saw, I am closer to 70 than 60. I have always used a round file. I have an 024 Stihl wood boss with an 18" bar. Kind of underpowered for that bar. Anyway I used files, I used stones to sharpen this saw. It cut OK after sharpening, but would dull easy after slipping on the ground a few times cutting fire wood. I watched a utube on square filing. I was going to buy the file shown in the video but got impatient. I had a harbor freight square file as part of a file kit I bought there. Maybe 10 bux. Took me about an hour to get past the round. Just tried it out. I HAVE NEVER had a saw CUT SO WELL!!!! Underpowered? NOPE. Saw kicks a## now!!
Love the Video Buckin. Im new to Sqaure Filing . Thanks for teaching me about it. Looks like you went through that Log like Hot Butter. Buckin you give alot of happiness to others. Deeply appreciated.
Buckin Billy Ray, great close up of the square grind filing! Appreciate ya taking the time to show us round filing and now square grinding! Nice older homelite you had there!
This is the video I have been waiting for, and just in time. I bought the files a couple of years ago, and tried reprofiling some round ground chains. I wasn't all that impressed, and it was a hell of a lot of work. This winter I have been buying Oregon Sqr Ground chains to use and will be maintaining them with the files, and this video will go a good ways in helping me.
Rider, just saying BBR has 20+ years of doing it by hand ..AND he has a Simington 451C behind him ... If I didn't have a simington I'm not sure I could keep it up. There is another "God" grinder Stihl fan swisse ... he has really good camera's take a look good luck. There is a small jig that Bailey's sell for a few hundy.
@@stihlnz I can do the sqr ground filing. Not as easy as round filing, but still is not brain surgery. I just found that going from a round file to a square filing to be a bit to much work and the cutting wasn't worth the effort. I will see if the square filing from the box is any better then round ground. I use to use a bench mounted grinder for my round filing. Was better then nothing when I was new to chainsaws. Once I evolved to hand filing the bench grinder was sold. Never again. Not as good as a vice and a file.
You answered a question of mine without even having to ask it! I took my stihl 460 into the shop to have the chain sharpened (assuming they had a grinder) and got it back without checking it like an idiot! Just noticed today that now my chain is square ground AND round ground on random teeth! Super mad about it. So, you changing a round to square was a question I had :) thanks BBR
I like the special files that I think valorbi makes for one of the square corner filing jigs. I think it’s the A-top.They have only 1 Bevel per edge. They work the best and give you a better view of the cut. I’ve been doing square chain for a long time and it doesn’t take that long to get good at filing them. For a while years ago the only skip chain I could get in bulk was square corner so I learned how to sharpen it.
Rest in Peace Robert Paxton McCulloch....February 25th 1977 the great innovator of the greatest chainsaw in the world "McCulloch" passed away.... This man created a legacy that everyone on this channel or anyone involved with a saw will recognize. God Bless us all

I got onto square files about a year ago. A fellow old time logger put me on them that’s been running a saw longer then I been alive and every time I grabbed one of his saws I was always amazed at how sharp his chains were. I’ve noticed though that square filing isn’t as forgiving as circle files. You can mess up your teeth quickly filing it wrong. Once you get the hang of it though I promise you won’t pick up another circle file.
I've only seen electric grinders doing the square cut. Not being able to buy one, but wondered if anyone did do it by hand. So THANKS for sharing this. Now all I need to do is find a Good Set
Thanks for the tips! I'm trying to get my homelite xl1 going i found in a junkyard. Definitely going to be giving a flat file a go after only trying to round file. Thanks for the great video!

Just a POG bystander here. Thanks Billy for your long time presence on the Tube and your hours of instructions. I've only ever used a round file for more than 30 Yrs. on 3/8" Chisel chain for Fir firewood only heat. But!!! I'd like to try my (left) hand at square filing. What is the make, brand of file you use for Square filing. Stay safe. Give Glory.
Like the way you make the old chainsaws of days gone by cut like a knife through butter, the new saws don’t seem to be any better. Makes me wonder what you can do with the new saws. Cheers my friend.
Buckin, I have always used a round file. Can you recommend a flat/square file to buy? I would really like to try square filing. And thank you for the constant supply of falling/buckin/sharpening knowledge
Pferd double-bevels are my favorite because the triangle-type don't make as large of a cut. Since the triangle ones take less material they're better for field-touchup, but require more gullet maintenance.
As far as I can tell, the Vallorbe he's using in this video, and that Stihl Fan Suisse uses in his videos, isn't available in the United States. Pferd files are pretty common, they make a double bevel as well.
Buckin' your optimism is very appreciated, as always. I'm concerned that that sweet little Homelite sure plugs the fan inlet quickly. I,m sure you're aware, but I apparently need to worry.
