OMG I bought the router in your video and set it up as you instructed. I went from 60 mbps dl to average of 360mbps dl speeds. Consistent for the last 36 hours. Thank you!!!
just signed up for T Mobile Home Internet. A lucky shot I would say. Got it connected and started monitoring speed, the results: some good ones and some very bad ones. But the bad ones over passed the good ones (speeds around 1 or 2 Mbps). After calling CS three times I realized that they had no answer to such erratic behavior. They sound nice over the phone, interested in resolving the issue, but not solid recommendation beyond "did you try different spots in the house?" A ticket was created but... no answer given... To what I completely found unacceptable and decided to return the equipment. Btw, I have seen a lot of videos here and I find interesting the fact of several of them addressing issues like : add an antenna, a router, change this and that, go to a website and do... etc. Who is to do that? I find those videos irrelevant for what they implied. The customer simply wants a product that works closed enough to what it is advertised... simple...
One more important thing about properly configuring your own router with this gateway, make sure you enable IPV6 and put it in PASSTHROUGH MODE. I could not get Netflix or some other streaming services to work through my router but after making this change everything works perfect now.
Absolute perfection! Clearly you spent time putting this video together. You wanted us to get it and we did. The picture box was a great visual addition and stimulated focus, the scope and sequenced demonstration gave order and plain English made for easy understanding. There was no need for frustrating and tiring rewinds. Amazing Jack. Thumbs up, subscribed, commented; I'm in. Thank you.
Incredible, straightforward video. I've had my TMobile internet device for 5 days now; total POS, couldn't find all my devices, buffering, etc. No help from TMobile's customer service whatsoever. I even asked them if a router would help speed up things. "No probably not". " Even their speedtests showed 17 down and 35 up! Thank goodness I found your video. I'm headed out to purchase a router - and, thanks to your excellent explanations, I'll know how to proceed with router's settings. You rock.
Thanks this is great! But it seems like T-Mobile has changed their website and you can no longer toggle the settings like you suggested. Any ideas on how to change it now?
I wonder if they've changed this page? When I connect to the IP listed on the gateway I am defaulted to /home. It's an unsecure connection, and I was not prompted to logon. I see a simple screen showing what is in the android app - mainly just connection speed and firmware versions. There are no options for anything else. (on the left side are icons for Home and Support - with support simply listing a link to a FAQ and support phone numbers.
They must have decided to disable a normal router admin login. I tried to get in this afternoon with no luck. Guess we are stuck using a PowerShell script to disable Wi-Fi.
Im going to try this. Two gateway replacements in two years is pretty annoying. Unable to connect when these little silver cylinders decide to to stop their wifi connectivity. Thax for the advice.
I was having the same issue.. I was getting frustrated thinking I was doing something wrong but looks like T-Mobile caught on and disabled that feature.
Can't wait to try this out. I just got T-Mobile Internet yesterday, I like it better than what I had but my constant fluctuating speeds when downloading games on my PS5 and Series X we're bugging me lol.
If you got the new 5g router good luck. I've got it and it's a pain in the ass. It doesn't allow you to turn off the signal output and it's stuck in nat 3. Went and bought a nighthawk to try to use and my speeds are now a 10th of what they are just using the 5g modem. Overall not very happy. Called tmobile and the tech pretty much told me I need to buy vpn and download firmware to my router to get around the double nat. Sad part is I also have a 100gb mobile Hotspot and it's always been nat type 2 so why the issues
@@MykeHunts yeah same here, got a Nighthawk as well with the same results. I cancelled, returned the gateway and ended up with Cox Gigablast and couldn't be happier at the moment.
Is planning to get Wireless Internet through T-Mobile but it only has 2 ethernet ports. I need more ports and was wondering if I can use my current router ethernet ports. I am trying to figure out which Wi-Fi to turn off. The T-Mobile gateway or the router. Now I know. Thanks.
Thanks for the great video! T-Mobile sent me the black square looking 5G Gateway model, and I went to the T-Mobile set up page, and I don't see anywhere to click on to disable the wi-fi settings so I can set it up with my Asus Blue Cave Router. Has anyone else had a similar issue?
@@JackNtheXbox Thanks very much for that link! I finally got the Blue Cave Router set up to work with the T-Mobile Gateway. I'm seeing pretty good speeds of 200-250 mbps average download and at times this morning I even reached into the 350 mbps range, which is what Spectrum is currently giving me. My average upload speeds have been between 25-50mbps which totally beats the 10mbps Spectrum upload speed. I have had the T-Mobile unit for a couple days now, and am going to continue to compare it to Spectrum for the next two weeks and make my decision. As of right now, I am getting CONSISTENT Spectrum speeds of 350mbps, and the regular monthly price is $75, but with the current Stimulus Credit bringing my bill down to $49.74, the prices are about even. All things being equal, I would probably switch to T-Mobile because I know the Spectrum discount will expire at some point. Other than the tricky set up with my router, I so far do like the T-Mobile internet. I have over 12 devices hooked up including my kid's computers and iPads, along with two Apple TV's etc, and everything is running fine so far. I have noticed no slowdowns or buffering issues. Thanks again for your awesome videos! You have a new subscriber in me! Keep up the great work! Wishing you and your subscribers all the best! 🙌🏾🙏🏾
Just picked up my gateway. My current setup uses 3 routers. 1 plugged into the cable modem and 2nd & 3rd routers are plugged into 1st via Cat6. One router is downstairs, 2nd is upstairs & 3rd is an outdoor router to cover the yard. My question is will this work: 1 & 2 into gateway & #3 into #1? Also, 2 & 3 are set up as AP's
Some advice, for next video show them where to go. I'm tech savvy so I knew but my neighbor did not. He went to his cell phone plan and couldn't navigate to internet dashboard. Thanks
great video one question how do I disable this setting on the New T-Mobile router I notice you have there the round cylinder now T-Mobile has New Router and don't see those settings on this one.thanks for your info
I'm using the newer Arcadyan KVD21 5G Gateway with my T-Mobile Home Internet (TMHI). Since DHCP is automatic on the gateway and can't be accessed, it needs to be turned off on the TP-Link router. As I'm sure you and your viewers are aware, you cannot have two DHCP servers operating on the same network without a lot of problems. I was pleasantly surprised at how good the wireless is on the Arcadyan KVD21 5G Gateway. I could see using a WiFi extender for those areas where WiFi has trouble reaching, but I'd say that wireless coverage is pretty even between the KVD21 and the TP-Link AX50. The big difference is in tweaking the network, and that can only be done when a router is in place behind the TMHI gateway.
Great Video as I'm in the midst of dropping my cable isp. Was concerned about the ability to use my own wireless router on home network. wish Tmobil just had a switch to enable passthrough mode. Much simpler
Thanks for this video. As for changing the MTU size, some people recommend that you add 28 to the optimum file size that's been determined to have 0% loss. In my case it's 1458 and I added 28 to arrive at MTU of 1480. But I don't see a big difference from the standard 1500 size in terms of internet speed is concerned. Have you noticed any significant internet speed improvement by downsizing the MTU to 1420? And is the 1420 after it's been added by 28 or do we need to add to it so it'll be 1448? Bit confusing by any thoughts on this would be appreciated. Thanks again. Btw, I'm using an Arcadyan gateway and the current firmware doesn't have any level of settings your Nokia has. It's completely stripped down, such that it needs to be hacked to turn off the WiFi.
The MTU changes are minimal and I did add the 28 as that accounts for audio in the latency. The changes to my speeds were there though, so in order to optimize my speeds I did keep the MTU adjusted to 1420. I have seen that the Arcadyan does not work the same...I really hope TMobile gets the gateways dialed in with more features and settings.
If you use a VPN, the VPN will add to the headers and push you over the limit of the gateway's max MTU... subsequently, endpoints while connected to the VPN will appear to slow down and/or become unresponsive as the packets are fragmented... So, lowering the max MTU avoids this fragmentation while connected to the VPN. You cannot change the max MTU on the T-Mobile gateway, but you can change them on your local router as JackNthebox did. So, for people working from home, if T-Mobile hasn't raised their max MTU, then you will have to lower the max MTU on your router, or individual network devices. Obviously, easier to set it on your router. Don't hate me if I used some incorrect terminology. I hope that I was clear enough to explain why.
I totally understand wanting advanced features but what of the multiple NAT issue. T-Mobile's CGNAT is already a double layer NAT system and adding another layer is not ideal. I have a complete Omada setup in my basement and I would love to use the advanced features of it but as of now I only have the gateway connected to a switch.
By using some of the NAT features and settings on my router, I am able to avoid DOUBLE NAT (sometimes it jumps to moderate) but it does not negatively affect the NAT.
Good video but the newer Arcadyan KVD21 5G Gateway does not have an interface such as yours. Its uses the T-Mobile Home Internet phone app which does not allow you to make the network changes you have described.
Thank you for the video I just started with T-Mobile home internet, and I haven’t had issues but love to hear I can do this. One quick question, can I use any wifi router? What router would you recommend?
You can use any router. I will be making another video next week on how to do this from the other two gateways...this method only works with the Nokia.
I got the TMobile tower you showed in the video about 6 months ago for my house, had about 3 out of 5 bars and 7 devices hooked up to it. My Xbox series x says strict NAT and upnp not successful. Haven't had anything like this happen in the 6 months I've had the home internet, so I got another tower, this time being the arcadyan one that is only directed towards gaming and whatnot. hooked everything up, tower says very good connection and I'm hit once again with that strict NAT and upnp not successful. But I also guess TMobile home internet doesn't support upnp because of the way the ip address setup is. Would getting a router fix this issue, or would I be better off returning the tower? Thank you for taking the time to read my comment
I have heard from a few different viewers about something similar to this happening to them. I was able to get my Xbox to open NAT using the router settings and putting my XBOX IP into the DMZ. There is some risk with this since that removes the device from being behind any firewalls, but game systems encryption security is usually way better. Hooking up a router to my Tmobile internet has been the best move I have made with it.
Having the same exact same issue. Word by word even the 6 months thing started giving me strict nat type out of no where. Constantly disconnecting from parties and games now.
This is because only the WiFi is being disabled on the 5G gateway, not its router. This means that your new home network is double-NAT'd or going through 2 routers - first the 5G router and then your new router. While giving you your own router and its features, you are paying the price of going through 2 gateways or NAT devices. It would be nice if the 5G gateway allowed bypassing the built-in router.
So now after almost 2 months, I can play online again, but it says upnp isn't successful in the settings with a moderate NAT. I don't know if this is still an issue with the TMobile towers, since I have a router wired to mine. All I did was buy a Netgear router, specifically wifi 6 enabled, logged into it on my computer and changed the Upnp and NAT forwarding settings, then hard wired from the router to my console. Hopefully you guys seeing this find this useful🫡
Sorry, thought I replied to this! Mesh systems are great for a large area that needs coverage. The only thing they do not work GREAT with is online gaming because latency and ping tend to be high just meaning you will experience games lagging and getting choppy. NEST is awesome!
Nice video, but when I log in to the homepage on my T-Mobile gateway (newest model) I get a barebones display with no ability to change any of these settings, kind of makes it a nogo for me.
Your video was super helpful really appreciate it, but had a question was hoping you could help. I've got the exact same setup as you (tmhi and same router). Followed steps to set up. I can play games but sometimes get hiccups and wondering if I'm missing something. When I turn on my Xbox I get double nat detected, if I test connection it goes to open nat. Feel like I need to change another setting or something. Any tips? Also, my switch has nat b but works online. Both xbox and nintendo are wired into router.
For the new Gateways they are faster...I had a boost in speed with the Nokia Gateway because it is older and has some over heating issues. Sorry, this video was when the Nokia Gateway was the only option.
@@JackNtheXbox I get that, but that's the gateway I have. I live in a rural area and the nearest tower for T-Mobile is only 3 miles away. Just didn't work for me the way I thought it would. Keep up the tech video's though.
thanks for the video! i have the T-Mobile 5G Home Internet and it works great in the house, ....but not so good in my detached garage? is there a extender i can buy to get wifi in my garage?
This is an excellent video in its explanations and demonstrations. I do not have much experience with internet connections that are more complicated than plug and play. I have a question for you. I have my router/modem from using Verion dsl for years. Can I use this as a router with T Mobile tower? If so, do I need to do anything to disable the modem aspect? Thank you.
You can use the Modem/router, but if it is old enough, it might not do much for you. Thank you for watching, and please let me know if you have any other questions.
Thank you for all the videos and information. I was wondering if you found any other routers faster and better than TP Link ax3000? I want to purchase a router for my T-Mobile sagemcom gateway. What would you recommend?
Thanks for the video. I may end up needing it, but I have a question. We have a Netgear Nighthawk gaming router. We really don't play a lot of games but we have a lot of devices using the WiFi. The router has WiFi. The T-Mobile gateway has WiFi. Is there a way to connect the gateway to the router using the WiFi instead of a wired ethernet cable connection? The best place in the house for the T-Mobile gateway is upstairs on top of my husband's dresser. There is no direct way to connect the router to the gateway AND connect to his computer downstairs (where the router is now) using ethernet. He still uses a tower and doesn't have a WiFi adapter. I know we can get one but then all the devices will be connected using WiFi in the house (right now, he's using ethernet and I usually use ethernet just to try and not bog down the WiFi channels). I'm worried that putting everything on the WiFi will be too much.
Which gateway do you have. It makes a difference. I currently use my router for the extra security features. It does not speed up my connection that much any more.
Pretty helpful, but I have a Netgear router. And I still need to use the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz in another building nearby. Can I turn those back on once the Netgear router is connected? Can you add a video that shows how to set up a Netgear router and what settings to set it to. I work from home and watch videos but no gaming here.
You can have both broadcast if they are out of range of each other. The reason you turn one off in the same space is because you will have drop issues and broadcast conflicts. You may also have heating issues with your gateway if you turn the Wifi back on. It is doable, but I would keep my eyes open for those issues.
Would you consider doing a follow-up video on how best to configure a router to other gateway models that don't have the same level of configurability as the Nokia? I just got off the phone with a T-Mobile tech agent and she seemed to think the newer models, and any future ones, wouldn't go back to allowing the same depth in options that your older model does because internet speeds are so high now that the difference is negligible, at least in their view.
I have the T-Mobile KVD21. I cannot change I can only view the settings. I have a netgear night hawk that i want to use. I am totally stuck? Thanks, Bill
@@billthayer2730 I have a G4AR, and if it's anything like yours, you cant do diddly. Cant even change wifi band. Extremely locked down. All you can do is change name and password. No settings to turn off wifi or DHCP server in my unit. Bit of a letdown, but for $50 I really cant complain.
I know this is old but 2 months ago i had to quickly get Internet into my MIL home, she has Alzheimer's and my wife needed to work from there. So i went to the T-Mobile store opicked up the 5g unit. a Few hours later i set it up at my MIL's house connected to my old deco x20's i had lying around after i upgraded my network and presto to coverage. Depending on the time of day, getting 150-300 Mbps speed which is more than adequate. We have 3 internal cameras, 2 outside cameras and video doorbell and the networks fine. We streamed Netflix, Max no issues. Only issue is when i wanted to set up her garage door that has MyQ. Unfortunately T-Mobile has a setting that can't be changed with the Gateway S1 with port 8883. So everything else works great except MYQ.
Great video, thanks so much for posting and making it so clear. One thing you didn't touch on was the security settings for the new router. I have a TP Link Deco M9 Plus that does not allow me to change from WPA (according to the app interface), and my network appears on my laptop as having "Weak Security". Do you have recommendations?
Hey Martin. I will be putting together several new videos this week and next...I will try to make security settings one of them. Stay tuned, and thank you for watching!
I didn't see anything here about disabling the TMO gateway NAT? I was expecting to see a change to bridge mode? It looks as though all you did was disable the gateways wireless to use the other router. But in this setup, the connected device through your TPlink router would be double NAT.
Surprisingly, my Xbox does not go to strict NAT. In most cases I have open to moderate NAT. So you are right, but it does not adversely affect my ability to game.
So does this solve the NAT type issue with TMobile internet? I've been looking for a gaming router that can help since i game on a nintendo switch(it shows nat d so im unable to connect to any multi-player online) and I even went to best buy today to ask them questions about it but they said a gaming router won't help but an hour later I stumble upon your video and I am amazed! I find this really helpful!
Great video, thanks. Once I deactivate all wifi SSIDs, will I still be able to get to the TMO router through my google mesh wifi? Or will I have to connect o the TMO router through ethernet to check router status, etc?
Subscribed. So do you know if possible using an ipad? I just got this internet for gaming on the road (I’m a truck driver). It worked hardwired in at home but once I got on the road it won’t. I’m on Xbox series X but only have ipad and iPhone to mess with the app so I’m wondering if it’s even worth buying a router.
Having worked in trucking (CR England and Knight) I would say, the router would not give you the functionality boost that would be worth it. You can change things on your iPad, I will be doing a video on that this week. Thanks for subscribing! We should play on Xbox- what games do you play?
I use the t mobile magenta unlimited hotspot plan, and use my phone as a 5g hotspot. Best $80 I ever spent, and if you set the phone outside the truck in a big zip lock with a battery bank under shade it will grab good signal. Never had the misfortune of working with cr England but I was a swifty...
Heee's Baaaak! Jack Great Production and Informative. I'm in a rural area and just purchased External Panel Ant. 2X Mimo and want to do the same set up. Any router suggestions that have the TWO external ant. jacks or removable ones that will receive the antenna signals? Anyone? Again, job well done. Thx.

I’m having a problem with T-Mobile 5g home internet that has not been resolved despite many calls in to the help line. I’ve had T-Mobile 5g home internet for almost a month now, and the short version is that every so often the gateway drops the network. When I say “drop the network,” I mean to say it throws everything off of the Wifi that it’s broadcasting, and anything plugged in via ethernet says “no network found. (To elaborate this point, cell phones switch to cellular data because wifi is gone for them, and computers hardwired into the gateway think that they are no longer plugged into anything.) Turning off the gateway and turning it back on resolves the issue, but doesn’t prevent it from happening again. Whatever is happening doesn’t seem to affect our connection speed/strength when the gateway IS providing signal to devices in the home, but due to the nature of our work, we need a connection that won’t just disconnect randomly
Which gateway do you have? This sounds like an update issue or an overheating issue. Both can be dealt with. Adding a router can help, but not first you need to see if your firmware needs to be reset.
Looking to grab a router for gaming on tmobile internet. Could you recommend a step up as of today from what you have . Theres lots of deals going on and I dont understand all these technical terms these companies do . All I been told is grab something that has ipv6 passthrough wifi6 mu mimo

How do you access the T-Mobile Overview web page that you are referring to. I have tried everything including calling T-Mobile and they have no idea. Thanks for any info you have on where to go for this page
Is this information still accurate as of March 18, 2024? This video is nearly two years old at this point. We switched to T-Mobile and have had issues with HULU disconnecting our account due to “location” changes. I’ve read that the TM Gateway uses dynamic IP address, which is constantly changing so, to HULU, it looks like we’re in a different location each time it changes to a new IP address 😫
Sadly, this method of turning off the WiFi only works on the Nokia Gateway. That being said, you can still hook a router to your Gateway and run dual signals, just name make sure that all of the logins for each broadcast are different and hook in through the router. I have tested this, and it worked.
I have the Arcadian gateway and bought the deco mesh system. I'm having trouble with my windows laptops. None of them are able to connect to the deco network. I keep getting a 'cant connect to this network' error. Any ideas? I searched the internet for answers, but no luck.
I have a Sagemcom router and I have tried to connect my Archer A8 so that my Eufy doorbell and Waze cams will work, but I'm not sure how to do that. I cannot get to the settings that you show as TMobile only has the phone app for that now, and nothing that you show is available as an option when I go to my 'admin' page. I am not a techie type for sure and maybe the question is a simple one, but do you have any suggestions? When I plugged in my router, my speeds tanked and it all still did not work and it slowed down my TV streaming as well. Should I just change the settings in my TPLink and would that work? Thank you.
The sagecom has a different set up to turn off the WiFi broadcast. You have to turn off the WiFi or the speeds will tank every time. I have not been able to get my hands on a sagecom yet, but I think Nater Tater did on his channel.
Does the router have to be plugged into the gateway ? Once completed can the router be plugged in somewhere else by itself and still be connected to WiFi ?
Xfinity gateways can be placed in bridge mode. Bridge mode will disable the Wi-Fi on the gateway and also disable its routing functions. That is, it will function only as a cable modem, allowing your own router to be the only router on the network.
@@Eternal_Tech So since then I did a deep dive and built my own network. In a short while I have bought 2 different modems first one was because I wanted to be lazy and cheap and get a Motorola gateway, but the docsis 3.0 platform made it too slow, got a used orbi and fell in love, and then proceeded to buy extenders. Got lost with the linking of the extenders and ended up daisy chaining them. Got a wifi 5 router from ebay, nice jobber but just didn't have the speed I wanted. Found a wifi6 router that just made my network complete. Thanks Jack for helping me with creating this masterpiece. Best regards
While this is very informative for the model you are using, do you have any information on how to do this with the G4AR or G4SE gateways? The interface that comes up in the browser is completely different.
Great video man, I have an archer ax3000 router with the tmobile gateway and I can't seem to get the router in router mode while having upnp and other settings selected per your video without getting the double nat on xbox, if I turn the router to access point, the nat goes strict :( so frustrating
Will adding a router help with port forwarding? I would like to use the PSplay app to play games outside the house and the app requires port forwarding.
I followed the steps for turning off the SSID info but it fully shut my Wi-Fi down and I had to factory reset my gateway. How do I turn off the Wi-Fi on the gate at but still have access to complete the set up?
Extra router is for the additional features and security they offer. The T-Mobile unit works great but the extra features of hooking the router to it makes it work even better.
Awesome. I have a tplink already set up with my optimum Arris modem. Since the router is already set up can I just do the necessary setting as you described on the Gateway and just connect it to the router and be good to go passwords, bands and all? Or will I have to go back into the router and set it up also to work with the gateway? I hope your answer is like a plug and play. I am not that savoy. I work from home and use VPN. I don't want to disconnect from optimum and have issues.. help
This should be a plug and play situation. Since your settings are through your Modem and not the gateway, all you are changing is your WiFi broadcast point.
@@JackNtheXbox ooooo. I didnt think to just plug the gatway into the modem. If I am understanding. First disconnecting the cable line from the modem which I own that is connected by ethernet to my tplink all I have to do is connect the gateway to the modem and all is well. Great video. After reading through all the comments I'm still confused about adding a router. I have the Arcadyan KVD21 gateway. I have 5 bars of extended 5G which works well in my house, but my Ring security cams need more reception. I get on average 225 down and 80 up. I will probably have 10 or less connected items. Will I have conflicts with the gateway broadcasting and also the router without any custom settings? If so what solution do I need ? Thank You.
Herald, your situation describes one of the reasons I hooked up a router. Most routers have a stronger signal that reaches farther. The Arcadyan was an improvement over the Nokia Gateway, but they still don't seem to broadcast as far. With my router, I get signal on my entire property.
The interface for the newer Sagemcom gateway is pretty lame and you can't disable WiFi. Also, When I plugged my already setup Linksys router in, everthing connected fine, but I discovered DL speeds were 2-3 times slower than if connected to the gateway. Most likely NAT conflict - I perhaps could have gone to bridge mode, but instead, I pointed all devices to the TMHI gateway and now use the Linksys router as a wireless bridge for my LT station. 🙂
Unfortunately this doesn't work with the gateway they gave me at T-Mobile, as the router doesn't have advanced settings on the web interface. I called customer support and the told me they could not help me with this. however I could use a script to turn the WiFi radio off. I found the script through a video: "How to add a router to T-Mobile Home Internet"
GREAT video. Thank you. I have Arcadyn KVD21 and wat to hook up Tplink ac1200 with EAP225 outdoor. I use trail cams that need wifi signal. Tplink is not configured for router or ac..is this a waste of time?
I have not used a TP-Link ac1200, how far are your trail cams? I prefer the AX models because they have WiFi 6 and you get better inhouse coverage. I would recommend setting any router you use to router mode, because the settings are just better. The other thing, this video will not help with the Arcadyn Gateway. I should have a video out tomorrow that does.
3rd time to respond. Tmobile has left a lot to be desired with coverage in my area but needing to get away from Comcast..>I'm keeping fingers crossed this works. Trail cams about 45-60 yards. I asked about TP-Link bc I have a brand new one that can be conveniently mounted to pole outside.
Followed everything, working, however ethernet off the router im only hitting around 1/5th the speed if I plug directly into the gateway. Anything you would consider setting wise for why this is throttled
@@JackNtheXbox Thanks for your response - NETGEAR Nighthawk R6700, QoS off btw the antennas inside the gateway, I haven't opened up the cylinder - are they better positioned a certain orientation? @@majulenparah I don't know if you figured this out or not or just gave up, but when I configured my Nighthawk with the MTU set to 1420, my speeds went way, way down too. I also had issues with consistent internet connections. I returned the MTU setting to 1500 and everything worked much smoother.
Great video! I’m a pretty heavy gamer so using the gateway was horrendous with bufferbloat and ping. Sadly I set my archer a7 and I still get pretty bad spikes. I’m trying to figure out where I went wrong. On the tp-link website I don’t get access to changing the NAT type, so I was wondering if that had anything to do with it? The settings only have IPv4, Advanced (which allows MTU change), and MAC Clone. No NAT. Everything else should be pretty straight forward but it’s still having some troubles. I’m also using the updated Tmobile gateway model, so maybe that had something to do with it? Thank you!

Wilson, thank you for watching. I enjoy making the videos. Even with the Arcadyan, I would recommend a router. Routers just have a ton more features to run a lot more devices and not bog down your bandwidth. Me personally, I separate the 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz because I like to be in control of what devices are using bandwidth, especially on my 5Ghz. This makes a huge difference for me with gaming and streaming since I need to make sure my system if at optimal speeds and smart devices are not slowing things down. My router is a TP-Link Ax3000. With an Ax router you get Wifi6, and that extends your 5Ghz bandwidth. Hope this helps.
@@wilsonlim898 I tested the Dynalink, and I got horrible test speeds. I learned after I returned it, it was the QoS setting that was slowing me down. I have heard from a lot of people it is great, I just did not have luck the first time I tested it.

@@oy8717 you should see a slight increase in speed, not much. The reason you turn off the gateway WiFi is to limit conflicting wavelengths. It will cause connection issues if you have them both running WiFi at the same time.
Great video! I have the same gateway-router setup as you but now I need to add a network switch. I just finished my new home and added more hard wired drops all throughout the house, especially in the theater room. My router only has four LAN connections and I need 12, hence the switch. How would I do that exactly? Thanks!
If you are using an unmanaged switch, then there are no settings to configure. Connect one end of an Ethernet cable to one of the four LAN ports on your router. Connect the other end of the Ethernet cable to one of the Ethernet ports on the network switch. Next, connect your hard wired drops to the other Ethernet ports of the network switch. Once everything is powered up, you should be good to go.
I might need a mesh system, have 2 story house with t mobile gateway upstairs next to a window and master bedroom downstairs on the other side of house. I have a google mesh system but out of date with new technology. Do you have a recommendation for a mesh system or do you think the TP AX55 will do the job.
@@waynes2183 the number refers to the max amount of data that can go through the router. Unless you have a Gigabit connection the AX55 is good. You can get the AX74, but it might be overkill. It does have more broadcast antennas, so if you are worried about it, that might give you peace of mind.

Hey Jack, got a quick question. Do you get a high ping on Xbox?

The customer simply wants a product that works closed enough to what it is advertised... simple...
Agreed. I added a router for the options. I needed better internet, but didn't want to sacrifice settings. This was my way of doing that.
One more important thing about properly configuring your own router with this gateway, make sure you enable IPV6 and put it in PASSTHROUGH MODE. I could not get Netflix or some other streaming services to work through my router but after making this change everything works perfect now.
Thank you!
How do you do this?
Absolute perfection! Clearly you spent time putting this video together. You wanted us to get it and we did. David, let me know how things went! If you got a newer Gateway, my method does not work as well. Hope it is great for you!

The video was interesting. My novice question is, why would we add a router? For faster speeds?
For certain settings and features. The speeds are only slightly faster. The gateways are pretty bare bones when it comes to settings. This helps.
Is there a good router that will give me better coverage?
great video one question how do I disable this setting on the New T-Mobile router
I notice you have there the round cylinder
now T-Mobile has New Router and don't see those settings on this one.thanks for your info
I am looking into this right now!
I used a script to disable it, see my comment above.
Great Video as I'm in the midst of dropping my cable isp. Was concerned about the ability to use my own wireless router on home network. wish Tmobil just had a switch to enable passthrough mode. Much simpler
Going to try this tonight. Bought TP-Link AC1900. Hope this is compatible
I am so glad you mentioned this. I work for a large company from home and I know their VPN is very secure. I don't need any issues.
@@JackNtheXbox You are behind double NAT anyways. NAT later 1 is on the carrier side, and NAT layer 2 is taking place on your router.
Great video! Covered everything I needed!!
Good video but the newer Arcadyan KVD21 5G Gateway does not have an interface such as yours. Its uses the T-Mobile Home Internet phone app which does not allow you to make the network changes you have described.

@@flvckodope1774 exactly what's happening to me. I've just come to a conclusion that I can't play online
Thinking about Nest WiFi Pro 6E mesh, what are your experiences with a mesh system?
Sorry, thought I replied to this! Mesh systems are great for a large area that needs coverage. The only thing they do not work GREAT with is online gaming because latency and ping tend to be high just meaning you will experience games lagging and getting choppy. NEST is awesome!

Great Vid! Do you have a recommended router for a non-gaming, 25+ wifi devices home?

I didn't see anything here about disabling the TMO gateway NAT? I was expecting to see a change to bridge mode? It looks as though all you did was disable the gateways wireless to use the other router. But in this setup, the connected device through your TPlink router would be double NAT.

How do you get to the website at 1:08 ?
I can only find intrcutions to use the app.
Which gateway do you have. That will affect it.

How do you access the T-Mobile Overview web page that you are referring to. I have tried everything including calling T-Mobile and they have no idea. Thanks for any info you have on where to go for this page
If you do not have a Nokia Gateway, this method will not work. The other gateways have completely different interfaces running them. Sorry.
GREAT AN THANKS//////THANKS MUCH
I have the Arcadian gateway and bought the deco mesh system.
Cool video Jack, going to perform the same thing with my Xfinity router
I still get double NAT sometimes, not all of the time for some reason, but it never goes past moderate with the settings I showed.
@@JackNtheXbox T-Mobile is using Carrier Grade NAT (CGNAT). You are going to be double Natted no matter what you do. UPnP makes no difference here.
Could you explain this when using an Eero system throughout the house to extend the gateway?
I'm going to try this, I have the newer tower.
It will not work with the newer tower, only the Nokia tower has this option. Sorry.
@@JackNtheXbox That's right! The most we can do is hide the 2.4ghz & 5ghz broadcast. That option is in the T-Mobile Internet app.
Thank you so much for making a video like this
Thank you for watching it!
Will adding a router help with port forwarding? I would like to use the PSplay app to play games outside the house and the app requires port forwarding.
The settings when you add a router are there, but I have not tested it. That should be my next test. I will try ASAP and get back to you.
@JackNtheXbox Thank you sir.
I followed the steps for turning off the SSID info but it fully shut my Wi-Fi down and I had to factory reset my gateway. How do I turn off the Wi-Fi on the gate at but still have access to complete the set up?
I’m new to this T-mobile internet, but I am a bit confused as to why the xtra router instead of the T-mobile unit? Enjoyed the video.
I don't have to change any setting, turn off something or match passwords on the gateway to the tplink? I am excited.
Will setting your TPlink to router mode still create double or triple NAT ?
With the settings I have on, it shows open NAT right now.
@@JackNtheXbox I wonder if they've changed this page? When I connect to the IP listed on the gateway I am defaulted to /home. It's an unsecure connection, and I was not prompted to logon. I see a simple screen showing what is in the android app - mainly just connection speed and firmware versions. There are no options for anything else. (on the left side are icons for Home and Support - with support simply listing a link to a FAQ and support phone numbers.
@@JackNtheXbox whats open NAT ? im quite sure if you set your TPlink as a router you are going to get double NAT
The upnp is lol but I was happy to learn about the MTU at 1420 (so should input 1480... 1452+28)
What? I had no idea you could do this!
What recommendation do you have for a faraday shield for my T-Mobile gateway?
Honestly....don't use one. I would now know where to start on a recommendation. Sorry.
Does this work with the square style Gateway? Is there an advantage of using the router vs what the Gateway itself provides? Thank you!
Sadly it does not. I have another video that might help with that.
What model is the router your using in the video ?
Followed everything, working, however ethernet off the router im only hitting around 1/5th the speed if I plug directly into the gateway. Anything you would consider setting wise for why this is throttled
Do you have QoS setting on right now? What router are you using?
@@JackNtheXbox Thanks for your response - NETGEAR Nighthawk R6700, QoS off
btw the antennas inside the gateway, I haven't opened up the cylinder - are they better positioned a certain orientation? I have clear LOS on the tower with 5G presently and was hoping adjusting its azimuth might help pick up the signal better

Thank you!
Have you been able to shut the broadcast from your Arcadyan Gateway? If not, Nater Tater has a video that can help. I will look into the A7 NAT settings and get back to you. Thanks for watching my vid!

Jack, I have the Arcadyan KVD21 2 months ago, Do you recommend external router? what's the model of TP-Link? Do i leave the SSID 2.4g/5g combo (recommended) or change to separate mode? I have watch so many you tube video. This a cool video step by step and very clear audio. Thx-Wilson

@@JackNtheXbox Hi jack. I got the tmobile gateway today and set it up. I have a silly question 🤪 , if I disable the Tmobile gateway WIFI, will my omework tpLink router speed will go faster?
@@Eternal_Tech Thanks for the response.
Did they remove the configuration stuff from that landing page? I don't get any of that. I just see the signal strength.
If you have one of the newer Gateways, this method will not work. Has to be the Nokia silver trash can. I am putting out a video soon to address this.
