    To me it's amazing to see the changes to UNC-A's campus. I graduated from there forty three years ago. Was there from 1976 to 1980. At the time we probably had no more than 1,500 students. UNC-A was primarily a commuter school. We had perhaps three to four hundred kids living in the dorms. I knew just about everyone. Some of the buildings were there then. I remember that we had to take sixteen hours of humanities and a lot of the lectures were in the crown shaped building that you pointed out. I loved it there and still have close friends that I went to school with. We are now in our mid sixties.

    Fun fact: unca is really close to black mountain NC (about 30 mins away). Black mountain college was one of the major birth places for graphic design on the east coast USA! Even though BMC isn’t around anymore unca also has an amazing art program and offers a unique degree called New Media where you can study Computer animation, web dev, etc. I looked into it and I think UNCA is one of or the only NC college that offers an animation program (may need to fact check that). But nonetheless if you are interested in studying anything art related this is a great school to go too! (Art student myself )

    I go to UNCA and it’s so cool to see someone outside of our little community appreciating our campus! There are actually a few places you can get views of the mountains: walkway beside Ponder and Governors res halls, the top of the steps of Ramsay library, as well as the Sherrill center and parking areas near the Observatory. Great video!

    Owen Hall is the fine arts building (the one under construction/renovations), and the Botanical Gardens is behind Founders Hall and is an amazingly, beautiful natural area where the students go and study/picnic, etc. (seeing bears there is a plus, ha!) all the dorms here are nice as well, you really can't go wrong with any of them.

    As a UNC Asheville alumna, I loved this video! Overall, it was a very accurate depiction of campus. Although campus is small, there are a ton of hidden gems and every part is beautiful. For instance, the philosophy building, Whitesides, has a beautiful roof garden and terraced “ancient gardens”. There are two large parts of campus you did not explore. Those are: the observatory, which is on top of a mountain abutting the main campus behind the athletic buildings, and the botanical gardens “botans”. Most of campus connects through a set of nature trails and there are several large gardens along UNCA’s periphery. The botans even connects to a greenway that extends to downtown. I mention those things since they are well-loved features of our campus, but it takes time to find them and discover how they link up.

    Anyone remember the impromptu Britney Sprears concert on the quad in 2001? That was me 😅I graduated one year *earlier* so I didn’t care 😂 Fun fact: the UNCA class of 2000 hired a photographer to take our class photo with a camera from 1900. It was such a hot spring that year and we had to try to sit still for a long time. Still, there are a few blurry faces in the class photo. I didn’t care to buy the picture but my mom did and surprised me with a framed version after graduation. Pretty neat keepsake. All you Virginia Tech meteorologists, before VT had a program, you basically had to go out of state for the operational forecasting track. The campus is probably 5 times bigger now than it was then. Asheville is a good 4 to 4.5 hours or so from the Roanoke Valley. It made a great second home for me. To my surprise my old village hall dorm is one of the few still standing. They announced the tearing down of most of them after I graduated.

    So cool to see you explore my campus!
    Unca is a very small but lovely campus.
    Rhodes Robinson is for math, physics lots of stem things like you said
    Zeis is for Biology Chem and more science things
    Owen is art and animation
    There are so many others!
    The dorms are really really nice too!
    I love it here so so much. The mountain air and small student body is perfect for me (: most people on campus are more laid back. Not a lot of parties, no huge sports events tbh. Very laid back campus.
    There are also entrances to the botanical gardens all over campus! It’s pretty❤
    I almost went to UNC myself but I fell in love with the environment here. I love Asheville so much!

    Hey ShivNC your videos are super helpful. Could you make one about accessing the gyms on campus - a tour, how a membership works, etc. You may have touched on it already but if you haven't it would be highly appreciated!

    • @ShivNC
      @ShivNC  3 года назад

      Thanks Olisa!! Thanks for the suggestion, I’m planning on doing a video within the next month called “5 things you need to know before coming to UNC” and one of the points will be how gyms work, so stay tuned for that. In essence though, you don’t need a membership (you can just go in with your ID), and the facilities are average I’d say.

    Starting at UNC this fall and wondering how owning a bike is down there. I'm coming from a big city where bikes get stolen bi-annually. Do you have experience with owning a bike down there/know someone who does? Great channel.

    • @ShivNC
      @ShivNC  3 года назад

      Thank you!! So I actually had my bike on campus for the majority of freshman year, and it was totally fine. The hill made the ride to class a bit tiring sometimes, but going from class-to-class while on north campus was a breeze (just have to watch out for people). In terms of safety, I have heard of a few bike thefts, but as long as you register your bike on the Transportation portal and buy a U-lock, you should be alright. Wouldn’t recommend rope locks
