This makes the deacons of the deep way more cohesive in the story than what we got in the final product. My theory is that the story was getting way too busy with so many different elements so they boiled it down to the basics and jury rigged things to try and fit in, like Pontiff Sulyvahn becoming an ambitious schemer and root cause of many plot points in DS3, or the whole thing with the Serpent Angels being so subdued, or the Oceiros and the new archdragons being basically scrapped aside from secret sidequest stuff.
The main Deacon is also inside the coffin in the retail version until it actually spawns in the battle, it doesn't necessarily mean Aldrich would have spill out from there but it's still a really cool idea
Thanks for doing these videos! It's always interesting to see early designs of areas The different door placement of the chapel is interesting. It makes the semi-hidden path outside to the bottom of the area a lot more useful. One could go down there and jump into the chapel through the window and get inside earlier if you are attentive. It's a shame they didn't keep it that way
Dunno about it being Aldrich or not, but the giant slug monster definitely feels like it could be a missing enemy from DS3. The normal slug monsters are called "Little Slug of the Eclipse." The word "little" implies there'd be a bigger one, otherwise it would just be called "Slug of the Eclipse". That concept art sure looks like a design for a Great Slug of the Eclipse, lol. But wait, there's more! The Little Slugs have a cut variant called "Little Slug of etc: Mound of Hollows", which can be seen in Lance's cut DS3 enemies video. Will you look at that? It's actually a mass of bodies with the faces staring at you, that looks not all that dissimilar to our concept art here, only on a small scale. Instead of big eyes, it has big yellow pustules, so it's not an exact match, but it still has that nasty bulbous look. It's still called Little Slug, even though once the mound appears, it's actually pretty big, once again, implying there is a bigger, more messed up version of that. I was always confused why it was cut from the game, as it looked really cool and fit in with the other body horror enemy designs in the game. As I was typing this two more images popped in my head. Remember those grey sacks hanging off of trees in the Farron Keep swamp? Those things clearly look like they're of some importance, like some kind of messed up nests, but in the retail game they're completely static and do nothing. Now looking at the sketch, their shape and texture resembles the sketch image's hanging sack thing in the top right of the image. Could it have been another piece of cut content involving the eclipse slugs? Now for a complete asspull on my part. I said two images popped into my head. The first was the Farron sacks. The second was the leaked image of the original Dreg Heap with the bleeding sun and a cut monster of huge size staring at you from the distance. Everyone assumed it was "Snake Soul" the fully realised Puss of Man boss. But what if it's not him? I mean, Puss has giant hands for one, yet that dark monster is just a weird torso. And it looks as if it's head is a lot smaller, and its torso thickens unnaturally. Puss is an even tube, like a snape. It doesn't fit. You showed something that fits a lot better for our mystery clad in black. Looking at that concept art, doesn't he look a lot like the shadowy mosnter from the leak? The lack of limbs, the narrowing head and bloated curved torso. It's an almost exact match! And the sketch shows that the creature is massive in size. The only thing missing are those spikes and some drooping gunk from its mouth. The implications would be horrific, as it would be a mountain of hollows consumed into one monstrous creature. Looping back to Little Slug Mound of Hollows, maybe it got cut because the Great Slug and the slug nests were also cut along with it. The goal seems to have been to turn Little Slug into a relatively normal slug enemy, not a weird abomination made of hollows. A small thing in this idea's favor is this: Even the normal Little Slug enemy had an attack where human arms sprouted from its head, as shown off by Lance in the cut enemy video. But this was also taken out of the normal slug enemy that appears in the game! My speculation's almost certainly completely wrong, but it is interesting how well this fits with other cut content and enigmas in the game. Imagine if it turned out that shadowy silhouette from the leak was a freaking slug monster all along. Hahaha I know it's late to say this, but these videos were very insightful bruv. Great job.
