You are absolutely correct about cars being a net loss of wealth and I have followed that thinking my entire life. I have owned 13 cars in my life and have spent under 20K in U.S. dollars for all of them ...together. I drove one of them , a Toyota pickup, for 26 years and it was used when I purchased it. But I am now 69 years old and am tired of fixing cars myself due to the high garage rates charged by mechanics. I am expecting a new Tesla any day now and even though it's a money pit , I promise you I am going to love the hell out of it due to nearly zero maintenance required. It will however probably be the last car I ever own so there is that for getting my money's worth out of it.

Hi Dave, greetings from Oxford. Your opening analysis of owning a car is very sobering, I am always shocked by the number of people who buy new, or lease, and change every 3 to 4 years, this is incredibly expensive. I do think buying new can be a good option, if you look after your car, appreciate a nice car and keep it for 8 to 10 years.

Knew this was heading towards Robotaxi lol 👏
Given FSD is a good decade away (camera only not a chance btw) listening to Musk, who makes the ex Thanos CEO sound honest is hopeful at best.
    These are the challenges:
    1. Tesla must be liable for accidents / injuries and deaths. Can't be on the passenger nor the Tesla car owner.
    2. Tesla will have their own pool of Robotaxi's.
They would I imagine prioritise their own vehicles over your own ($£€)
    3. Even if your car sees a lot of action, you'll soon burn through your mileage warranty.
    4. Does it return to you fully charged?
    5. If it breaks down / has an accident do Tesla prioritise a replacement / SC repair?
    6. Musk talks about other companies paving the way for autonomous driving, but they are all using Lidar + cameras. If he thinks Tesla is jumping on the back he'll be sorely mistaken.
    7. Your insurance will go up regardless.
    8. A passenger throws up in your vehicle. Who reports it, who's liable and who on vomit duty clean up wise?
    9. I could go on...

Nice for people that need to go from A to B.
We mainly use the car for the pleasure of the trip, not the endpoint.
We love to see the place we travel thru, the little towns, the forests, the rivers, boats, castles etc etc. and make photo's or drone footage of places we see.
Will the robotaxi stop every few minutes, follow that nice little route thru places we have never been and want to stop? Open the rooftop and enjoy the wind and sun?
Or sit at a little picknick table and eat sandwiches and have a cold drink?
Can the robotaxi take my surfboards and the bikes and drive us to nice places where we can go off-roading or surfing and have our cloth and towels ready when we come back ?
I dont think so. Large masses of people don't go to work and dont need to go from A to B every day.
We own cars for over 50 years and the "from A to B use" is just 30% of what we needed the wheels for.

I only drive my car between 1.5 to 2K per year max, 0ver 4 yr old M3P and still under 11K miles, My car is a hobby - and transport, Its a toy, I idle away my retirement detailing it, Its worth every penny. Driving and loving the car you have is emotive - its not a lump of metal, it puts a smile on my face - and you cant put a price on that. If we all spent sensibly there wouldn't be a great deal of employment because most stuff we buy we can do without. I have a free bus pass - and never used it once. It isnt about money, I cant take it with me so im enjoying my life. If you believe a robo taxi charges will reflect the costs to the owner of the robotaxi then your mad, all it will do is attract a lot of people with a lot of money to run as many cars as they can and make the charges maybe a pound or so less than a normal taxi - the public wont save money with ultra cheap taxi rides - the owners will see to that. The taxi to the airport £104 - well if a robotaxi ever gets going (and it wont in my or your lifetime) they would maybe charge £90 - Its a pipedream Dave.

Unless you buy some sort of desirable classic then of course they aren't an investment, for some they are something of a convenient luxury, for many they are a tool. Property only really appreciates in value because of supply and demand issues and in fact we saw this through the Covid period where cars were in short supply and some used cars were selling for more than they cost new. Friday nights will ruin the idea of the Robotaxi in the UK when the drunks vomit all over the back seat unless there will be a robo cleanup crew to go with the Robotaxi. I can also see these being booked on a stolen phone, hijacked and stripped for parts because we can't have nice things.
Once the airports catch onto the idea that nobody is paying to park anymore because their self driving car is dropping them off and picking them up you'll see how quickly those £10 drop-off charges climb to make up the difference.

For any scenario, we can cherry pick situations and say it’s never gonna work. Unfortunately, cab drivers have to deal with Friday nights as it is and many of them just avoid it making the cost of Friday night travel even more. Uber Already vets people who want to book a ride. It is theoretically possible to use a stolen phone, but it is an awful lot of work to avoid paying a Robo taxi five quid. I vividly remember seeing back to the future two and the flatscreen TVs hanging on the walls - “ what a load of rubbish” I thought to myself “that’s never gonna happen”

Cars are a 'consumer durable' not an investment. Only car dealers try to convince us that a car is an investment. Surely the measure of good value is up to the individual, be that setting fire to money by smoking, pouring it down the toilet by heavy drinking or buying a car. The question is what is the point of money? Is it a number to be kept in a Bank, or is money a thing in action.
I look at a car as a 'Tool', a 'spanner', nothing more. The days when anyone went 'wow' at your car has long gone, anyone who think otherwise is a fool. Before I buy a car I carry out a cost per mile projection of the total cost. Its a simple thing to do. The cost decision is mine to make. Currently I drive high mileages, on routes that mostly cannot be done by public transport., For now a privatey owned car makes sense.

I don't think that my experience is unusual.

When I changed jobs. I costed out cost of running car, against cost of using bus to get to work. Now despite being a ICE, I included ins & VED etc. Car came out cheaper. Before even factoring in I could not use busses for 2 days due to none running when I needed to get to & from work. Imagine doing the same now with a EV... Sure no cost of actual purchase, but when you look at the rest of use the car got. It's well worth the cost. As no other way to do half the stuff we do with a car. Having the ability to do what we want when we want means a car is not a investment. It is life.

Good takedown on the financial lunacy of new car ownership! Best bet is to just keep a car till it is older, had our last car till it was 14 years old so no depreciation left to do in the end. Planning on keeping the Tesla M3 for a good few years too, I'm sure charging speeds and ranges will improve but the Tesla is 'good enough' that it will stand the test of time...

    Hi Dave
UK compared to most other countries have a different relationship to Money. We are concerned about depreciation, investment, how much we earn, the Jones's next door look to have more than we have, etc etc.
Maybe its that relation to money that is the issue. If you want it and can afford it, get it and enjoy it. The money is spent it's gone, enjoy what you've got.
As for your holiday in Spain. Why not drive all the way? Take a longer trip, stop at
charging stations, report you findings, compare Europe against UK. Enjoy the journey, take in the sights, food and culture. Oh and on the cash issue you could maybe claim the travel expenses against your tax, Wow save some money.
I recently returned from Italy, drove 5000 miles that included three free charge'! YES Free!
But above all we had a very enjoyable time.

Totally agree but if you can save fuel ⛽️ money on an EV, buy the same new EV sold virtually interest free, then the EV cost and charging are both a Tax write off then and only I think 💭 I made the right choice to trade my 9 year old diesel ⛽️ which it ULEZ complaint I brought the diesel car for £15k 6yrs ago and due to get on the market for £5.5k so I loss of £10k over 6yrs so £1.66k annual drop. Not bad for 92k miles of driving. 👍🏼

Speak for yourself I drive 40k pa. Just on a commute I drive a minimum of 15hrs a week. But earn £800 a month plus the tax saved on a company car. So my ev is an exceptional investment. It costs me 2p/mile. So purchasing outright was the correct decision as I still have a depreciating asset but it does what I need easily evennif it gets to 30% degradation I'll still end up with 200 mile range. Without getting that fixed.
Forgot to add I get a nett £4k for providing my own car too. 😂

That's the market I can afford. How long do you think before EVs filter down close to that lower tier market? Will there be affordable second hand EVs for people like me who want to change but who can't afford to pay more than a couple of grand for a second hand car, and if so, when do you think that day will come? 😊

  • @dennishaggerty463

Quite a lot of comments here from car/driving enthusiasts. Very valid, I used to count myself among them. However there is a massive cohort of regular folk who have no interest in driving and those who are frustrated with large traffic queues and urban driving generally, who would be very keen to embrace the robo-taxis alternative. It’s not just the money saved.
With anti car measures in cities and large towns, bus gates, revenue raising speed cameras etc, plus often extortionate parking charges, the ability to go to a city/town in a robo taxi provided with the GUARANTEE another will pick you up for the return journey, will have enormous appeal. Perhaps they will replace all of the second cars and ‘station cars’ etc and we will see a proliferation of classic and fun cars for weekend entertainment?
Of course some governments may outlaw robo taxis, not because they don’t work, but because they would lose so much tax revenue if motorists stopped pouring money into their coffers every day. Which is why, unfortunately, governments will place a massive mileage tax on robo taxi use so the dream of an £8 return trip to the airport will remain a dream.

Never thought about cars as an investment. That's why I keep them for at least 10 years ...
That's why the whole talk about depreciation is nonsense. If you keep a car for only 3 years, you kind of asked to lose money.
The car is a convenience, and you pay for it.
If there are working robo-taxis (vandalism or badly behaved people can be a problem sometimes) where I live, I will probably only need 1 car rather than 2 for longer trips.

  • @uproid
    @uproid 3 месяца назад

Overall, your facts and figures are absolutely true, we own cars for the convenience, being able to just walk outside and get in whenever we want. In most places in the UK, local public transport is not great and you can't generally expect to get a taxi quickly at short notice. Whether robotaxis change that remains to be seen. Not great news, of course, if you earn your living as a taxi driver. One thing I ought to clarify, your throwaway line that "trains are much more expensive" - which is a misconception often held by car addicts who never use trains. Whilst they can be very expensive if you travel at peak times and/or short notice, if you can travel off peak and book ahead, there are some very cheap fares out there. To give a coupe of examples in my area, I recently travelled Northampton to Birmingham and back later the same day for £12.80 return . The same trip can be £3.80 each way if you can book in advance. Likewise, there is £9 each way Northampton to London (£6 if you have a railcard). You can't do it for that price in your car - so it is not true to say that the train is always more expensive, but horses for courses depending on the journey you need to make. And of course, I did use the car to and from the station so there it is again, the car for convenience when needed.

  • @smortg

I've worked in care related roles on shift work for most of the past 4 years. I now have a better salary, but shifts and the distance to work make public transport only vaguely viable - especially when I start 8am on weekends and sometimes finish at 9pm.
I would love to return to public transport much more than before, but my car is an insurance policy to secure my job.
A £9 return journey covering 40 miles costs about £4 at 4 miles per kWh if I charge using lampo post charging - could get even cheaper at home of course.
In essence, the car insurance and energy costs are a subscription to save money. Some weeks it's worth it with great value, some weeks it's a money burner

We have house insurance and never used it .... apart from when we did ! The car is the same, a just-in-case lifeline especially for older people, getting to the shops safely visiting family, IKEA for huge loads, ours does everything and after about 10 years we reckon it will have paid for itself, if you buy one to use for only a few years then I would lease but as mentioned we don't want to change our car as it does everything we need it to do plus a lot more and as an added bonus it gets over the air updates making it up to date, for free !.
Paying cash as a capital purchase means nothing else to pay apart from fuel, for us this comes via the Sun for free.
If we ever get FSD we will buy it as it will extend our driving life then we will bin the car and go for robotaxis, again if we live to see them implemented, the very last thing we would consider using would be public transport such as the bus (if it every arrives) or the train assuming they bother to turn up for work ....probably out spending their obscenely huge salaries !

The car sharing model can be a good alternative to ownership, but typically people in suburban/rural areas are poorly served so it only tends to work for those in larger towns & cities. I suspect robo-taxi will suffer from the same issue, maximising utilisation will drive their adoption.

A lot depends on how you use the car. If you are always doing regylar trips I think this will work great.
When I go interstate I find that renting a car costs about the same as Uber from airport to where ai am going and back so I usually rent a car because all I need to do is one extra trip and it is cheaper. The other benefit of the rental car is that i dont need to wait but I have to drive.
For the other times I am not so sure it would be convenient enough. My biggest issue is I have to carry things and do multiple things in one trip. Having to take things in and out of the robotaxi at every stop would be very inconvenient and also if I do 5 stops and I have to wait a little at each stop like I am doing right now I think having to wait for the robotaxi to turn up wouldn't work and also having the robotaxi wait for me may cost the same or more.
I would do this 3 or 4 times a day.

How much per hour is the robotaxi depreciation, insurance, servicing? Whatever that is the owner will want to make £1 mile on top of all that. So if it’s £100 in a taxi including the £50 per hour for the drivers wages then the robo taxi will cost around £50 from the airport. Not £8 😂

    • @chapmandu2
      @chapmandu2 3 месяца назад

But the robotaxi will be in use far more than 5% of the time so the fixed costs are amortised over more miles.

At first I thought that this was an interesting topic but then I realized where it was leading, I should have known better.
    A couple of thoughts.
Both of our vehicles do way less than the figures you quoted but we keep them for reasons other than just economics. We live in an area where there are potential fire risks in Summer so I want to be able to get out of the place if needed as well as using my 4wd to go camping/fishing/off roading a couple of times a year.
I also want my wife to have something to use if she needs it while I'm away.
Do people really want to put their potential well-being in the hands of all this technology?
If the grid or the internet go down these things will be totally useless and the system will collapse if everyone wants to use them at once due to not having their own vehicles. It happens now whenever there's an emergency and the mobile grids collapse under the load or their battery backups run down.
Also why does anyone think these things will be much cheaper?
There will need to be a lot of investment in them as well as the infrastructure to keep them going which won't be cheap. If anything they will start off cheaper to suck everyone in and then the price will go up to whatever the market will bear once people are relying on them.
    It always happens.
Sorry but I don't like your fairy tale world tbh.

I think we will need something approaching general artifical integence before Robo Taxis become a thing. And we are still some way off that yet and a long way off being able to cram the sort of computing power needed into a car. But we will get there and when we do most of the car industry will collapse because people will only buy cars for fun, like sports cars for instance. Young people living in cities don't drive anymore and Robo taxis will turbo charge the transition away from car ownership. When I was a kid I had a record collection, then I had CDs then I had a pen drive now I have spottify, cars will go the same way.

We all kinda know buying a car isn’t the best investment made. However who doesn’t love the idea of taking a notion to go somewhere and stepping outside. Get in your car and off you go, plus people like owning their car (well renting it from some bank).

I have only ever purchased 1 new car in 40 years of driving. I usually buy cars that are 10 years old and I have hardly ever had issues with depreciation.
My children would also never buy new. As it is an enormous waste of money.

I can see them working well in cities, and for specific shortish trips, especially airports. However, long trips will be a way different story. Unless there's a good price to have it for a week.

Talking of taxis; during a normal mid day 2 mile ride cost me £10. Two hours later that same return journey to pick up my car post MOT cost £17! I think local taxi firms are taking the p!ss.

Where the RoboTaxi also gains is if you have 2 or 3 people and the economics verses Trains and Planes for < 300 mile trips door to door are very attractive.
I am an FSD user and it already is very good but getting from "Supervised" to Unsupervised" is still a big step but IMHO achievable within 6 months.

Unfortunately owning a car has always been a money loser, the variation being the amount per year. The biggest thing I now look at is the comfort and need of the car, as well as running costs. I am very much waiting for the Full Self Driving being available in the UK as it will make it easy when having to go into town for a quick errand or two, the car could just drop you off and drive around until you need it.
When FSD Taxi's do arrive , they will definately change the market and be a very interesting option.
Have a fantastic trip to Spain!

The trouble with taxi's is the empty vehicle mileage - the car must drive these between passingers (unless there is someone ready to hop in at the destination). Another burden on the UK electrical system - the NatGrid is OK, it's the local networks which will struggle.
Why? Many car owners will want both benefits - ownership and income. They'll buy an EV and rather than park it, they'll send it out to earn money. Where do these EVs charge? At home, on their cheap-rate overnight power. The local networks end up with lots of recharging...

When self-driving cars become reliable and common enough, then it would be great not to need to have your own car. You would be able to hire the kind of car you need for that particular journey - including a pickup, a van, a family car, a small car.

Without a doubt, this year will be worse than the last. I lost a lot of money last year as a result of bad investment choices that I would not have made if I hadn't been so worried about my portfolio. I kept investing, but I couldn't determine whether to start paying for a house. In the end, I sold my positions, and the house needed more work than I had planned. I'm not sure how long I can keep going like this

The unforeseen consequences of trusting the public to look after your investment property will destroy your dreams of cheap as chips taxi rides during the small hours. What investors will want their taxis earning buttons when the risks of vandalism or other antisocial activity are so great at night. It will be bad enough during daylight but night work will break the small and not so small investor.

The very way in which self driving cars will operate will ensure that the person 'hiring ' the car is positively identified, making liability for 'misuse' easy to charge for. The old idea of 'hailing ' a Taxi on the street will almost certainly disappear, the hailing will be done by direct identification of the hirer via phone app, contracts or even biometric ID
