Great job! I must say this is one of the better DIY impeller replacement video's out there with one exception. NEVER put grease on the top of the out-drive shaft, rather remove the old grease from the splines and replace then wipe the top removing any grease there. Grease on the top of the spline can cause hydraulic lock making it very difficult to fit the lower unit to the upper snugly. People do this then use the torque of the bolts to mate the two. This causes a pressure on the lower gears and upper unit that can cause costly issues. The lower unit should mate flush with the upper with you just pushing.
This is the problem I have. I’ve watched 20 videos on changing an impeller some say, leave it in drive, some say, leave it in neutral, some say, leave it in reverse, I’m not understanding what the difference is? even in this comments section it suggested to leave it in neutral, leave it in forward gear, etc..
I just bought a procraft 1995 v180b witj a 135 mercury and first ride on water it stopped peeing then started then stopped so im gonna put a new water pump in thanks for the video
I see U have a Proline Walk I'm pretty sure U said it a 2002..with a 150hp Optimax Saltwater.. l have a 2001 Proline Walk 150hp optimax saltwater as well. I don't have a painted hull though, I live in SW Mich. I never got to ocean as was hoping to. I was in bad motorcycle accident in 2007 have only been out a few times ea year. I had surgery on my Back this May so today is 1st time its been out of my shop since Aug 2022. I remember only changing impeller 1 time and it still didn't work. I order parts from dealer I purchased boat from. So I took it to them to work on it after I tried, I remember them telling me it was because the bottom part of pump & seal was bad just like you showed. I bought the impeller kit from a different place this time. But after I watched this video I will order the lower part of pump & seal kit as well. If I am going to take it apart going to do it all. I see U made this video 2yrs ago so don't know if U are still looking back at this time or not. But expect for a few small things that others said already like the small water hose that I think is around the shifter rod, the grease on the top of shaft should be only on groves. It can make it hard to put lower unit back together as grease could make a airlock if on top instead of spines. Thanks for a good video you show everything very well gives me idea how the process is done. Im not sure if there is specific torque on nuts or not but most things do. I am very surprised that in 22yrs I only have had to change it 1 time. I think I have 380hrs on the boat & motor not many for its age. I am the 1st owner of it bought it new, it has been parked inside every day except for a 2wk period about 7yrs ago. Thank U
John thanks for sharing and hope you feel better after the surgery. And yes, people had made some great suggestions and shared some helpful tips. I use my boat in brackish water so after few years it warrants for impeller swap. The hours on your motor are nothing and probably you have many years of use ahead of you. Be Safe !
Just curious why you replaced impellar as it looked ok ? I have the same 150 XR6 noticed when going slow it doesn’t pee good and alarm buzzes when wide open does fine but water is very hot to touch when peeing great job on video ! I’m doing this hopefully this evening if they have the kit
I replaced the impeller based on hours of use or timebsince last replacement, even if it may look ok, but sometimes fins deteriorate resulting in sometimes what you are experiencing
Hi, I removed my lower unit following your video, mine is the 200HP, when I removed it 4 washers fell out and im not sure where they go, sorry 5 fell out, one is the size of a 50 cent piece and the other 4 are smaller, would you happen to know where they go or how I can find out? Thanks so much!!
Were those metal washers? I am not sure about washers, because the unit pulled has shaft, pump and water connect tube that has rubber seal I believe. The 4 or 5 washers that I know of, are secured by nuts on plastic water pump assembly.
So far from what I can see it looks like my boat a 2002 proline 22 foot anyways. What kind of grease are you using when you grease these things like the little key and also the shaft? And do you have to torque the bolts when you replace the lower end? Thank you.
@14:15 when you're coming up from behind and make it like you're going to put it into the lower hole but then accidentally slip it into the upper hole.
Sorry, just a little confused on which kit to buy. I believe we have the exact same motor but when I look online some kids come with a whole bunch of round seals and some don’t.
The link for kit is in my description, its a whole kit without the bass plate, base plate has another link. The seals set includes the seals for lower unit oil plugs and others
Best video so far on this.. but one thing confuses me I did mine today and when putting the lower unit back on the copper water tube coming down to the pump that connects to the plastic tube is not a tight seal at all! Is this normal? Seems like you would want some kind of seal there but maybe I’m wrong.. I did not notice anything fall out when taking it apart.
So funny thing.... i ordered a new gasket impeller kit. It came with some paper like gaskets. But when i took out the old gasket it was more of a rubber quality. I installed thinking how could these paper like gaskets hold.....well now there's lube leaking from a hole on the top of my lower unit. Not sure where it's leaking from, the gasket or maybe an O-ring i didn't replace. So question is....the gasket in this video looked to be of a rubber material... did i get a wrong gasket?
What was the part number and make? Are both of your screws for lower unit gear oil have seals and tight? A picture would be helpful to see from where the oil is leaking. Hope i can help you Captain.
in neutral there is no danger of bumping the gearcase out of gear and assembling it misaligned. You can always turn the unit a bit to catch the splines before pushing farther up and in neutral the shift shaft will easily slide in. If it bumps out of gear while handling, it can become a nightmare. OMC are a different story....they have to be in gear because the shifter is an up and down movement. Merc and Yam are both rotational.

I will be as well... afew more dollars to be safe is worth it. A friend of mine works at a Marina he talked to owner about how much I could get it done for. A good deal is $400. Don't have to spend that much when a good video shows you how to do it....
@@FKCamVlogs The new impeller housing already had one in it, and some how the old one stayed on the pipe extension, when i put it back together I ended up pushing the new bushing down inside stopping the water flow, it was still pissing as it should but once on the lake it over heated right away so the trip was cut short , if I would have replaced the white tube I would have seen the old coupler, so I learned a lesson to make sure all old rubber is out and check the housing to make sure it comes with one, so a 2 hour job turned into a 4 hour job.
Make sure its in neutral. There is metal thing at edge of drive facing forward. Move it left or right or keep it in middle and spin the prop. When neutral prop and shaft will spin. When installing the drive back, put it in position to fit the top drive. Hope this helps
While in neutral the spines on shaft don't move, its hard to align with upper unit. With unit in gear you can spin prop to align the lower unit shaft with upper unit. Hope this helps !!
@@FKCamVlogs I figured it out from the service manual and from Mercury's support.. The plastic sleeve is just a guide for the metal tube and there is a water tube seal that inserts in. On my motor the upper seal is bad so the water is just barely sealing the water in so so the motor overheats. Yours was like the 4th video I watched and no one mentioned the tube and seal.

There is one on out drive that fits into the upper housing. If you buy rebuilt kit it comes with one plastic extension

It should be 150hp not cc. If I said cc , it must be in error. Thx for pointing out!
