#1 tip for a bolo tie is don’t wear it like a necklace. If it’s silver and turquoise treat it as formal wear and have a nice, crisp collar and button all the way up, and they also look snazzy with pointy-toed cowboy boots with silver tips. But not many people can pull off that look…

Personally, I think it works for his Tartan Cowboy look. To me, it blended a little rock-n-roll with the cowboy look with the Dr. Martin-esque boots instead of cowboy boots. (Couldn't tell exactly what boots they were, but looked more combat-style, I think.) I dug it! :)

@@shaunvlog If it's felt, not water resistant. 😊😊 There are plastic things that go over them for rainy weather. Seriously, don't touch the brim, dry or not. Always store it upside down. Cover it with a towel or something to keep the dust off. Ours are stored in the original box. I can clean them with cornmeal, but It's not common in Great Britain.
Here's the instructions on what to do if it does get wet. " If your hat gets wet, simply shake off the excess water and turn down the leather sweatband. This will allow the hat to dry naturally. When the hat is wet avoid the brim touching the surface and avoid heat. This can reactivate the felting process and cause shrinkage."
The covers are $6. Most Western Wear stores anywhere in the country will sell them next time you are here. I don't know if you can get this link or not. www.cavenders.com/m-and-f-cowboy-hat-rain-cover/MF01080.html?gclid=CjwKCAjwm8WZBhBUEiwA178UnKxsQCsTUdUY2mhgqEtkFwavclwrGibWij1BctMI9x8LRiXpwb_PxxoCywMQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

Congratulations to the Tartan Cowboy. You are almost an official Texan. 😁I didn't recognize your bolo tie at first, due to the positioning; the emblem is commonly worn over the second button, with the two ends slightly off from each other.
Many classical 19th century Texas ranches were owned by either Scottish syndicates or descendants of Scottish colonizers. My own Sloan forebears had come from the Lowlanders who had colonized Ulster during the Plantation of Ireland, then about two or three generations later participated in the largest mass migration from Europe to the American colonies. They went on to establish one of the larger ranches in Texas.
The ranching culture is largely Spanish/Mexican with an overlay of Ulster Scots that put an Anglicized pronunciation on Spanish language terms. The equine gear, and perhaps some of the Western clothing, ultimately traces to Morocco. However, plaid patterns and flannel do seem to be Celtic. The prices of those boots guarantee that I would NOT be wearing them in a cow pasture! 🐂🐃🐄

Shaun, I have a question for you regarding your skin condition. I have suffered for pretty much my whole life with eczema. I have a similar complexion and skin tone as you. What I have learned over time is that it is an autoimmune response to external stimuli. This can be triggered mostly by exposure to various chemicals like, soaps, detergents, perfumes, and deodorants. As I get older the sensitivity has become more pronounced. Now I can only use all natural products.
It’s just something to consider. I know you probably don’t want to be bothered about it. I just thought I may be able to help.
Keep up the good work! You are much appreciated!

Pope John Paul? LOL!! The mind boggles. Nuthin' wrong with an Aussie outback hat. Some prefer the look. There are discounted cowboy boots but I wouldn't go with an 'off-brand'. Keep in mind, I'm no expert in western wear but I do know a little. Ignore the exotics. I think what you thought was alligator was actually snake skin. Working boots are many times much cheaper. If you want the 'Sunday go to meeting' boots save up over time.

  • @mikemilne

    Your enthusiasm is inspiring.
    Some suggestions:
When you next visit Texas, look around for some smaller Mexican western wear shops. The sizes are definitely different and also the variety is more limited, but you will see a difference between the styles, such as the way the hat brims are shaped. The boots are often styled differently too.
The commenter who says wear the bolo tie like you'd wear a tie is correct, as far as it goes. Like a tie, you want to wear it under the collar and snug against the top button of your shirt. But also like a tie, as the day goes on, you might find yourself unfastened that top button and loosening the bolo a bit. No shame there.
That's how we wear them in Texas, anyway. In New Mexico it's more common to see them worn loose with an open neck shirt. But always under the collar, Angus. And never so loose it looks more like a medallion. It's a bolo tie, not a bolo necklace.
I know someone has told you, the little string knot on the inner sweatband of your hat indicates that is the back side of the hat. The cockade always goes on the left side, I don't know why.
They already squared you away at the hat shop, but I'll put my two penny farthings in- the way to find your hat size is either measure your head or try on a bunch of different sizes. A well fitting hat shouldn't sit so low that it touches your ears, or so high that a moderate wind would dislodge it easily. When you find the right size you'll know it. Put it on, give your head a shake. If it rattles around its too big, if it pops off it may be too small.
A Stetson hat is always a good choice, but there are other, less pricey options. Oh and in Texas you will for sure want a straw hat for summer. Now you know your size you'll be able to buy a cheap one in lots of places, not just a western wear shop.
I love that you're so fascinated by Texas. The more you learn about Texas culture the more fascinating it becomes. For instance people from Outside don't know about how strong an impact was made by German immigrants. For instance the Mexican music of South Texas was shaped by a merging of styles between traditional Mexican and German oompah music, with their similar brass sections and accordions.
I could go on and on, but I have to feed the dogs now. Keep up the good work!
Edit: keep in mind that it's much easier to clean the brim of a hat than a shaped crown. So when you handle your hat, you might want to hold it by the brim rather than the crown.

Boots are a very brand specific item. You must try on (and walk around in) multiple different brands to find what's comfortable for you. Don't just look at the exterior, but the workmanship, shape & comfort! Nothing worse than paying alot of money for uncomfortable boots that you can only wear for 20 minutes before your feet of back starts aching!
I have a heel problem and the only brand of boots I can wear are Ariat with the ATS footbed. So, I now own 5 pair because they work for me. Find which brand works for you and making the investment won't feel like such a chore. I treat myself to a new pair every birthday - that's my investment into myself! Good Luck and thanks for the great videos as always.

  • @therockbiter8140
    @therockbiter8140 2 года назад

For boots I enjoy my Ariats, mine are more of a plain leather "work grade" boot, but the rubber soles make them very long lasting and comfortable to walk on most surfaces. But you'll need to get a few pairs of boot cut jeans to go with them, unless you're dressed up for going out pants generally go over the shank of the boot, unless you just like getting lots of stuff inside of your boots.

Tartan is a very common pattern for western shirts, as for the boots a well fitting boot is a must, if you're not used to it breaking in a cowboy boot can be quite painful if the basic fit is a little off, once they're broke in and you're used to cowboy boots you might not want to wear any thing else, my father was a working cowboy I haven't worked cows in 30 years but I still prefer a well fitting pair of cowboy boots of the work boot style (no fancy boots for me)

Hello. I'm recently new to your channel.
I just found out that I'm found out, I'm part Scottish and researching Scottish culture. I just want to say thank you.

Texas sure seems like a nice place. Seems a lot happier than where I am at here in New Mexico.

For "cowboy boots", I say don't buy fancy boots but nice working boots with thick leather. I had a pair of Red Wings that lasted me 20 years. They just get softer and softer, just clean them off and oil them from time to time and they will last a LONG time.

I was born in Texas and settled back here 20 years ago … but have to admit I don’t have either a hat or cowboy boots. I’m No Hat No Cattle 🤣

You will no doubt be gifted boots if you ask for them. (Get some for your wonderful wife as well) just give out your shoe size in the US sizes and anyone thinking of sending them to you may think of adding 1/2 a size to be sure he can slide his foot in. It's not always easy.

Ariat Heritage Roper Western Boot is what I wear $160 made in china unfortunately, I grew up in Tx and go back to see my folks. Good boots just like a good hat. Never cheap lol. So much great food in SA. Many places over by Trinity University.

Technically not desert. It’s actually pararie aka drier grassland. It’s just different.

Better to start out with less flashy stuff that you might wear more often. Wrangler snap closure denim shirts and jeans. Hats vary a lot in price, but you will pay a big premium for Stetson. Boots are the biggest variation in price, so stay away from the exotic leathers and decorations. Good boots fit right away, but cheap ones require a painful breaking in process.

You should visit Montana, your new cowboy hat will fit right in. Also lots of Scotish descendent in Montana.

As a Texan with Scottish ancestry, let me just say tartan cowboy is certainly Texan approved. And it certainly suits you.
